CAPITOL BAPTIST CHURCH w 401 KESSELRING AVENUE w DOVER, DE 19904 w CBCOFDOVER.COM w 96.1 FM T his week, we are going to begin to look at the life of Israel’s 12th judge, Samson. We read in Judges 14:1-4, “And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines. And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to wife. en his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well. But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.” In the previous chapter, we read of Samson’s birth in the midst of troubled times. Samson’s father’s name was Manoah. His mother, an unnamed woman, was barren and was visited by the angel of the Lord, who foretold that she would conceive and bear a son. is son would be a Nazarite, dedicated to God from the womb. When the chapter ends, we read, “And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and the Lord blessed him. And the Spirit of the Lord began to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.” No doubt, there is a gap of years between the end of chapter 13 and the beginning of chapter 14. But in chapter 14, we begin reading about some of the events in Samson’s life. Remember, the life of Samson can be described as strange, complex, a riddle, a paradox, or a very sad story. Samson himself could be described as unstable, impulsive, careless, reckless, and even carnal at times. As his life story begins to be told, the first event that God chooses to tell us about is Samson’s encounter with his parents concerning a wife. As this story unfolds, I believe we find Samson making three grave mistakes. Much of Samson’s life is an example of what not to do. Samson’s first mistake was: I. He Roamed in Sinful Places (vs. 1-2) e first mistake that we see Samson making is that he goes down to Timnath. Timnath was a city located about 15 miles west of Jerusalem. It was located in the Valley of Sorek. But it was not where Timnath was located that was the problem; it was what was located in Timnath that was the problem. Timnath was a city of the Philistines! e Philistines were a heathen people, idolaters who worshipped false gods like Dagon, Ashtaroth, and Baalzebub. ey were superstitious and wicked, engaging in all kinds of ungodly activity. Timnath would be what the Bible calls “the world.” And Samson goes there! e world that we live in is a wicked place. A while back, I was speaking to someone who got a part-time job working at a place where they catered banquets and major events. She was telling me how they primarily do weddings, but in the late spring, they do high school proms. At one particular high school prom, she saw sitting at the table embracing and dancing with one another– two boys with long hair. At another prom, she said that when the dancing started, the dance floor looked like a sexual frenzy with clothing. e Bible is very clear that a believer must separate himself from the world. We read in Psalm 1:1, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.” Proverbs 4:14-15 says, “Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.” (Proverbs 1:10-15, 1 John 2:15-17). e Bible is very clear: You cannot roam in sinful places and come away unscathed! e problem with many Christians is that they have the idea that they “can handle it.” ey think that they can flirt with sin and know where to draw the line—we cannot! A Christian cannot hang out with lost people, rub elbows with the world, do things like hang out at the bar or attend business cocktail parties, and not be affected. You may say, “I haven’t sinned yet.” Maybe not, but you will if you hang out there long enough. You can even roam into sinful places today without even leaving your home. Beware of where you roam! This week, we are going to begin to look at the life of Israel’s 12th judge, Samson.

And the Spirit of the Lord began to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.” No doubt, there is a gap of years between the end of chapter 13 and the beginning of chapter 14. But in chapter 14, we begin reading about some

of the events in Samson’s life. April 2017Amados Amigos En Cristo, There has been a lot to do, but the mission in Cerro now has a pastor. Not that it is a surprise; on the contrary, it is something we have been working for, for some time, but has now become a reality. We ask you all to pray for Heriberto Bizarro and his wife Lili and their family (two daughters and two sons) who have moved to Cerro de Ortega a little over a month ago. They have been going to Cerro with us on Tuesday and by themselves on Sunday afternoon for a number of years now, always with the plan to move there and be the pastor. The church in Colima supports them weekly, and he was able to find a job right away in one of the large banana farms around Cerro. We had to do quite a bit of work on the house he found to rent, but all he has to do is pay the light bill, and it is about three times bigger than the house that he was living in here in Colima. The church has responded well and helped a lot in their move, and because they are now able to have more complete services in the church on Sunday, it has been a spiritual help to all. The pueblo, unfortunately, has taken a turn for the worse lately. Not that the violence (killings) are anything new, but it has become a lot more vivid for the Bizarro family, and one of the recent killings was the son of one of the ladies in the church. We had known Carlos for many years (20 some). He had attended church off and on through the years, a lot of ups and downs, but as time moved along, things became worse. He was in prison a few years ago, and when he got out, he got in with a bad crowd, which lead to his demise. His wife was killed a few years ago (while he was in prison), so he has left three

children, orphans for the grandmother to raise. But in all that goes wrong, as we see it, we are hopeful for the oldest daughter, who has been quite conscious of all that has gone on in the lives of her parents. She has been very concerned for her own soul, realizing that both of her parents had lived lives worthy of eternal death. Fran and I are both very thankful that there is now a pastor living in Cerro de Ortega that has been and will be a great help for these people. Fran and I still go to Cerro every Tuesday afternoon and for the foreseeable future will continue to help, as long as we can be a help, and not a hindrance. Many times, Fran and I go by ourselves, and some of the people in the church worry about a “par de viejos” (a pair of old folks) coming home at 10 or 11 at night by ourselves. But I tell them that it’s kind of nice getting out with my wife, even if it is just the trip to and from Cerro. Felix Montoya will be helping us in the church in Colima. He has taken Heriberto’s responsibilities in the church. Please pray for him; he seems to be a serious-minded person with a desire to serve the Lord. He has been faithful with a good will to help. He has been going to the institute for two years, and has done well even when things have been adverse. Apart from the institute, I have asked him to prepare a message outline every week, which we go over checking doctrine, hermeneutics, and a little bit of homiletics. Thank you all for the prayers, support, and patience.
