Shepherd’s Notes Ask the Priest

NEWS FLASH: We have a new Music Director!

Thank you everyone who have been praying that we find a new music director. It looks like Our Lord has provided our parish with a timely hire. One of the church music directors in Northern Virginia had placed his home on the market this summer and was relocating somewhere around our parish boundary. A couple of his family friends have recently joined our parish within the past year and were quite happy to be here so he decided to move his young family towards our direction as well. We do believe we are in God’s lovely little country so we shouldn’t be too surprised that he decided to share in our blessings. Please pray that he finds the right home very soon so that he doesn’t have to make the 40-minute commute to our church. Our new music director is Michael Galdo. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and Religious Studies from the University of Virginia and a Master of Sacred Music (Organ) from the Catholic University of America. He was the music director, organist/pianist and music teacher at Our Lady of Hope Church and School in Potomac Falls, VA for the past 4 years. His other past parish experience includes St. Thomas Aquinas University Parish (Charlottesville), Marymount University (Arlington) and St. Luke Church (McLean). He and his wife are active members of the Youth Apostles whose mission statement is, “To evangelize, teach, advise, challenge, console, and love the young with the ultimate purpose of inspiring them to live a Christ-like life cen-tered on prayer and the Sacraments in the Catholic Church.” Michael auditioned for the job the night I was leaving for vacation (August 11) and impressed me, Father Tewes and our Liturgy Director, Cathy Mitchell. We had a long discussion that night regarding his job description and he agreed to the direction I had presented him (see my July 22 Shepherd’s Notes column for details). Once I added my own “John Hancock” on the employee-hiring document Michael was of-ficially hired. This happened on August 15, the Solemnity of Our Lady’s Assumption. I had to cut short my historic vacation tour in Philadel-phia so that I could come back briefly and make this happen. Michael officially starts on Saturday, September 1. The decision was a bit of a challenge because there was another person who auditioned previously who was also impressive and a skilled music director. Michael’s ability to lead the choir while at the same time being the musical accompanist played a major role in the final decision. We are very much looking forward to having the choirs back for the 8:30am and 10:30am Masses in September and for the return of the children’s choir as well. I am hoping that there will be a large response to our request to rebuild our choir membership. Michael will not just lead the choir but would also offer vocal training for the members and cantors. For those who are looking to improve their singing this would be a great opportunity. May our parish patron Saint Francis de Sales and Saint Cecilia the patroness of music guide our new music director and music ministry to many successful years of bringing great sacred music to our parish community.Your shepherd in Christ,Father Escalante

Q. Can women join the Knights of Columbus? If not, why? –AnonymousA. The Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882 (130 years ago) as a fraternal order of charity for practicing Catholic men by Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney. One of their main goals was to provide life insurance for the family members of the Knights in case of death. There was a time in the U.S. when it was nearly impossible for Catholic men to obtain life insurance and when they died their widows and orphans were left destitute and most often with no one to help them. Father McGivney was able to form the Knights of Columbus to help the Catholic families by forming this fraternity for men. Currently, there are over 1.8 million worldwide members in over 15,000 councils. While the membership has always been for men, the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary was formed several years ago whose primary role was to provide support for the men’s council and their activities. Most of them, but not all, are usually the wives of the knights. On another note, there is a Squires Circle branch in some of the Knights of Columbus councils. This membership is for boys 12-17 years of age and preps them to become full knight members when they reach 18 years old. Q. How did Jesus heal people? –AnonymousA. Miraculously! If God wills it, it can happen instantly. “For human beings this is impossible, but for God all things are pos-sible” (Matthew 19:26). Q. Has anyone ever done his or her penance inside the confes-sional room? –Juliana Terreri, age 10A. On very rare occasions, yes, if the penance was not lengthy. Almost all the time the penitents fulfill their penance outside the confessional room. Q. Were John the Baptist and Jesus cousins, and most likely grew up together in the same or nearby area? And, of course, John baptized Jesus. So is it correct to assume they must have known each other very well and John had to know who Jesus REALLY was? My question is this: Why in Matthew Chapter 11:3 did John ask from prison, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another”? –AnonymousA. The two of them did not grow up together. Jesus grew up in the northern part of Israel (Nazareth and Sea of Galilee region) while John the Baptist was from the southern part (Jerusalem, region of Judah). The biblical walking distance from Nazareth to Jerusalem was about 68 miles. But you ask a very good question why John still did not know for sure that Jesus was the Messiah even though he previously heard the voice of God the Father say at the Jordan River baptism, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). We know that Jesus did not make it very obvious to the public that he was the Son of God and the Messiah. Even the devil that tempted Jesus at the desert (Matthew 4) didn’t know for sure either that he was the Messiah. We know that satan himself did not realize this until after the cru-cifixion. So we can understand why John the Baptist needed to confirm from the lips of Jesus that he was truly the long awaited Messiah and savior of the world.

Rosary at 12:30pm Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3pmScriptural Rosary at the 7pm

This devotion, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, is a time of silence spent be-fore Jesus physically present before us in the Eucharist, placed in the monstrance and exposed upon the altar for all of us to visit and adore - a time to develop that deeper, more personal relationship with Jesus. It is the very core of our Faith and a true gift for our soul and spiritual well-being.

All parishioners are invited and encouraged to spend a Holy Hour in Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament on the First Friday of every month. Join us this Friday.

Please contact Mark Donofrio at (540) 338-8133 or [email protected] if you would like to become a regular adorer, substitute or have any questions. For regular adorers who cannot make their scheduled time this month, please let Mark know so we can ensure adequate coverage.
