The Task
• Your company wants to break into the mobile game market
• They have a character/theme in mind, but unsure about the format the game should take
• They are asking different teams to investigate different game formats - you’ll each be in one team
• Your team must produce requirements for the game format that your team is assigned to.
Mobile Game App Requirements

Different Game Formats
1. grid games e.g. alien hive, candy crush etc
2. physics games e.g. angry birds, worms
3. arcade games e.g. coin slots
4. puzzle games e.g. laser beam
5. running/scrolling e.g. naughty piggys/temple run/minion rush
6. board games e.g. scrabble, chess, etc
7. strategy games e.g. megapolis, farmville, criminal case

Addressing the Problem
• Your goal: focus on requirements for that game type
• e.g. - it what contexts is the game ideal for? - how does the game suit different contexts? - how does the game player relate to other people? - why do people like that game type? - what do different types of people think of the game? - do people play different games at diff times for diff reasons?
• Focus on WHAT it should do not how

Choosing Methods
• I will teach methods in the next 3 classes
• You should choose 2 separate methods - and do them in pairs/threes - and do them properly - you must explain and provide evidence of doing so - all methods must involve human participants
• All members of the group must take part in the elicitation - evidence is required
Wednesday, 9 October 13
Dr Max L. Wilson http://cs.nott.ac.uk/~mlw/
Finding Participants
• Both methods must involve human participants - Its up to you to find anyone who will take part - It shouldnt be hard to find people who play games on their phone
• Participants must NOT be studying CS in Nottingham
• You will have to revisit participants to validate at the end - so make sure they are happy to do this

Dr Max L. Wilson http://cs.nott.ac.uk/~mlw/
Participant Ethics• All participants must sign informed consent
- a form will appear on moodle
• No children under the age of 13 may take part - you might want to consider the impact of this in your report
• They must sign two copies. They keep one. You keep one.
• Failure to observe this ethical requirement is an academic offense and subject to serious penalty www.nottingham.ac.uk/academicservices/qualitymanual/assessment/academicoffences.aspx

For Each Method
• You must describe, as formally as possible, how the method was used
• Describe who did what, and when
• You must describe the information found/recorded
• You must collect evidence (recordings, notes, data, photos, etc)
Wednesday, 9 October 13
Dr Max L. Wilson http://cs.nott.ac.uk/~mlw/
Some Tips
• 1) Get participants to walk you through what they do
• 2) Investigate as many aspects of the situation as possible - when they do play a game AND when not - how they choose games AND why not choose games - when they install games - when/why they uninstall games
• 3) Take: audio, video, notes, photos, anything - check what participants are comfortable with

Think about the deadlines
• You will have to start presenting results in 4 weeks - this does not need to be finished, but mostly complete
• Finding people, arranging meetings, and then analysing the data for requirements - takes time. - start early
•

Upcoming Deadlines
• 18th Oct - Decide what methods and arrange participants
• 1st Nov - Begin synthesizing all requirements from group
• 4th Nov -12th Nov - Present Requirements in Class - will take first round of peer-assessment
• 13th Nov - Finish Part I of your report (Recommended)
• 14th Nov - I will provide Coursework Part II Spec

Dr Max L. Wilson http://cs.nott.ac.uk/~mlw/
Writing Up
• I will provide you with a template when writing up time comes along
• The overall report will be 3,000 words. 1,500 from this stage - data/recordings are submitted as appendices (not in word count)
• Part I should cover: - the requirements problem - methods used - information about participants - MOSTLY: user requirements identified (func and non func)

Dr Max L. Wilson http://cs.nott.ac.uk/~mlw/
Things you can start now
• Meet in your group, arrange weekly meetings
• Discuss what you know about the game type
• Read about the game type
• Think about which types of people are important - ie a stakeholder analysis, with priorities etc.

Dr Max L. Wilson http://cs.nott.ac.uk/~mlw/
Working in Groups
• Everyone must make a commitment to a group, for it to work well.
• Make attending the weekly group meeting a priority
• Take minutes of every meeting, including who has attended
• Do your write-up in stages - dont wait till the end, or you’ll forget things
