- Prior to 1975: people of Viet Nam mainlymigrated to countries in the region on a small
scale. - From 1975 to the late 1980s: 2 trends:
- Evacuees after the liberation of the SouthVietnam and National Reunification.
- Students and workers to Eastern Europecountries and former Soviet Union underbilateral agreements.

- From 1990 to date: the number ofcitizens of Viet Nam migrating abroad on
the dramatic rise, in various forms andwith complex characteristics. Up to now,about 4.5 million Vietnamese are living,working and studying in 103 countriesand territories.

- The absence of a parent (particularlythe mother) for a long spell causesdisruption in family life. Care of the
children becomes the responsibility ofthe spouse/elder children/grandparents/relations.
- Divorce rates among migrants are alsosupposed to be on the rise.

Solution:To guide members of their families touse effectively the remitted money. TheState facilitates and encourages migrant
workers to invest the remittance inproduction or business activities andcreate jobs for others.

Return migrants, in particular, bring backtheir skills and work experience fromabroad, thus boosting productivity.
Nearly 88.62% of Vietnamese migrantworkers improve their skills and workexperience, 90% of them upgrade theirforeign language level

Emigration also helps Viet Nam to ease
population pressures. Labour migration has brought economic
benefits to most of the returning
migrant workers.
