n October, she was named the 2017-2018 Atlanta Public Schools Teacher of the Year. Then on Tuesday, December 5, Jackson was named the College Football Playoff Teacher of the Month, which comes with a

$1,000 prize to help with classroom initiatives.

When Dan Corso, president of the Atlanta Sports Council and Atlanta Football Host Committee Board of Directors, interrupted – albeit briefly – Jackson’s lesson on the Civil War to present the award to her, there were no shrieks of surprise or tears of joy. Jackson flashed a bright smile, thanked and hugged Corso, and went right back to work, helping her students break down the lyrics of a song sung in battle by the Union Army. It was a quintessential display of Jackson’s passion for teaching and serving her students.

“I knew I wanted to be a teacher in middle school,” said Jackson, an APS alum who attended Price Middle School. She will be featured on an upcoming broadcast of WSB-TV’s “People 2 People.”

“School was like a refuge and a safe place for me, coming from a disadvantaged neighborhood,” Jackson said. “My teachers looked out for me and encouraged me, and that inspired me to be a teacher. That’s where my passion for teaching comes from.”

A NICE SURPRISEThe good news keeps on coming for Sylvan Hill Middle School teacher Mahoganey Jackson

Korean Cheese Steak, Fred’s Meat and Bread (Krog St. & Tech Square)

You may’ve already had the regular cheese steak at Fred’s, which is known not only as the best cheese steak in Atlanta, but possibly one of the best in the country. But have you ventured to try their Korean cheese steak? If you’re a fan of the regular, but are craving a spicy bite, this sandwich is definitely for you. Your choice of perfectly seared chicken or steak, a generous amount of white American cheese, gochujang Korean hot sauce, candied jalapeno, garlic aioli, all on a fresh TGM Bread roll. Pure, cheesy heaven.

Ice Cream Sandwiches, Miller Union (West Midtown)

It isn’t surprising that amazing restaurants like Miller Union also have unbelievable pastry chefs that could churn unicorn ice cream in their sleep. Miller Union’s ice cream is rich and creamy, the flavors are clean and pronounced without tasting artificial, and they don’t rely on adding sugar to achieve great flavor, they rely on fantastic ingredients and technique. This is an ice cream that you can’t, and simply don’t want to make at home. Miller Union’s rotating variety of heavenly sandwiches is only available on their lunch menu, so plan accordingly.

Lobster Grilled Cheese, Brine Seafood Shack (Avalon)

Can you see the amount of lobster in there? I think you could see it from the moon. Brine Seafood Shack builds their lobster grilled cheese with perfectly buttered white bread,

heaps of tender lobster, and cheesy béchamel that could make a sock taste good. Also, did I mention that Brine doesn’t even own a freezer? They’re shipping their lobsters in live, almost every single day of the week, from Maine. Not bad for being in a land-locked city, is it?

Banh Mi, Lee’s Bakery (Buford Highway)

There’s nothing frilly about these basic banh mi. Seasoned pork, rich mayo, tons of fresh veg, spicy jalapenos, and a house-baked crusty, chewy loaf come together perfectly in one of Atlanta’s best sandwiches. It’s salty, spicy, fresh, and has a great variation of textures. Best of all, if you opt for take-out, they cost only $3.25 and are buy five get one free. Try to find a better value in ATL, I’ll wait.

“Today’s Catch” Crispy Fish Sandwich, W. H. Stiles Fish Camp (Ponce City Market)

I love fish sandwiches, but often times they’re missing that certain something…. ACID. Fish begs to be paired with tart, tangy, acidic anything, and this sandwich has really covered that base. The super fresh fish is fried till perfectly crisp, then topped with vinegary slaw, briny pickles, and tangy, creamy remoulade. I’m also convinced that they squirt the top of the fish with fresh lemon juice, just to really go there. All that goodness is piled into a soft, buttered roll. Even if you’re not a fish sandwich kinda guy/gal, you may be after you eat this.

M ercedes-Benz Stadium was recognized with LEED Platinum certification. Created by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED, or Leadership in Energy and

Environmental Design, is the most widely used green building rating system. Home to the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta United of MLS and many of the world’s top sports and entertainment events, MercedesBenz Stadium is the first professional sports stadium in the world to achieve LEED Platinum Certification and has obtained more points than any other sports facility in the world with 88 total points.

Opened in August 2017, the new world-class sports and entertainment venue is renowned for its bold design and eye-catching features, however, the two-million square foot stadium’s unique sustainability

solutions for water, lighting and energy conservation, as well as community programs and stewardship, have been a key part of the building’s innovation story from day one.

“We set out to build a venue that would not only exceed expectations, but also push the limits of what was possible in terms of stadium design, fan experience and sustainability,” Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United Owner and Chairman Arthur Blank notes. “We set a goal of achieving the highest LEED rating because it was the right thing to do for our city and the environment and with this achievement, we have a powerful new platform to showcase to the industry and to our fans that building sustainably and responsibly is possible for a venue of any type, size and scale.”

LEEDing By ExampleMercedez-Benz Stadium sets a new standard in the age of sustainability

The stadium can power nine Atlanta Falcons games or 13 Atlanta United matches with the renewable energy generated through its 4,000 solar PV panels

The stadium featurexqs LED lighting, which will last 10 times longer than standard lights and reduce energy usage by as much as 60 percent

Partnership with community organizations like Trees Atlanta to share captured rainwater for tree irrigation

Alternative transportation options – including a bike valet program on event days, EV charging stations with capacity to charge up to 48 electric cars simultaneously and new pedestrian-friendly walking paths allowing for more connectivity between communities

entertainment and community building on non-event days

Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s sustainable design was born from the vision and commitment of Arthur Blank, who has been a leader in sustainable and socially responsible building practices in Atlanta for many years. Blank built the first LEED Gold building in Georgia in 2004 – the Arthur M. Blank Family Office in the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta, GA. Many of Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s partners made tremendous contributions to bring the vision of creating the most sustainable sports stadium to life, including MBS lead architect HOK, the stadium’s solar provider and official sustainability partner Georgia Power, and sustainability consultant, Ecoworks Studio.

“By achieving LEED Platinum, Mercedes Benz Stadium is showing fans and the larger Atlanta community that the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United leadership is committed to creating a space that is healthier and more sustainable,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO, USGBC and Green Business Certification, Inc. (GBCI). “We commend Mr. Blank and his leadership team for raising the bar for their industry, creating a better experience for fans, and for helping to transform the built environment.”

The building’s LED lighting and highly-efficient water and energy use and conservation strategies will also lead to significant operational savings over the long-term lifespan of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which hosts more than 50 major events per year as well as daily

We set out to build a venue that would not only exceed expectations, but also push the limits of what was possible in terms of stadium design, fan experience and sustainability.
