Counselling Psychology Doctoral Program Department of Educational Psychology Counselling Psychology is a helping profession devoted to the prevention, remediation and amelioration of emotional, cognitive, behavioural, and interpersonal difficulties, and the enhancement of human potential and quality of life. The Doctoral Program in Counselling Psychology at the University of Alberta has been Accredited by the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) since 2001. The program's present term of Accreditation is up for renewal 2018O2019. The Counselling Psychology Program is dedicated to the training of leaders of the profession through the: pursuit of disciplined inquiry, understanding of and respect for human diversity, and development, use and evaluation of effective counselling practices . The program provides for the development of scientist/practitioners who have solid academic and research orientations and are able to adapt to changing and diversifying roles of psychologists. The program operates from an integrative theoretical orientation. Students are therefore exposed to a wide variety of counselling approaches including personOcentered, cognitiveObehavioral, emotionOfocused, compassionOfocused, and multiOcultural. The goals of the program are that students will: learn and apply methods of disciplined inquiry learn the core foundational content ingeneral psychology learn and apply skills for crossOcultural practice learn and apply ethical principles and standards of the profession learn, develop, apply and evaluate the effectiveness of a variety of counselling approaches and interventions be prepared to meet the needs of the public in various professional service roles and settings Education. Rethought. The scientist/practitioner model for counselling psychology training provides the basis for the program. The core courses are designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge to enable them to function as counsellors or consultants in private, institutional and academic practice settings. The plan of study includes a series of practica supervised by professional psychologists in university and community agencies, including completion of a fullOtime 12 month CPA accredited internship. The program brings to this task a stateOofOtheOart onOsite clinic offering both assessment and counselling services to over 350 clients per year, and a strong program faculty with wideOranging clinical and research expertise. Program graduates over the last 12 years have been employed across hospital, community, university, government, and private practice settings, with 98% becoming registered psychologists in their provinces of residence in Canada. Financial support for program completion may include external scholarships and awards from the national research councils, internal scholarships from the University of Alberta, and teaching and research assistantships. Students must complete a Master's Degree in Counselling Psychology including a thesis (or equivalent) before applying. The application deadline is December 1 of each year, for admission the following September.
