2 PUBLIC COMPUTER RENEWAL AT THE LIBRARIES

Our community will soon benefit from up to date computers available for use at all City of Ryde libraries. Public access computers at all five library locations will be replaced during November. Enhancements include larger monitors for improved accessibility, installation of the latest software on new hardware and boosted performance with faster processing speeds.

The library team has planned for service disruptions to public computer users to be as brief as possible, with computer down time in each location likely to last one to two days. Other locations will remain operational while each library’s fleet of public computers is upgraded, allowing locals to have the option of using another library location where needed. Our community will be notified of this upgrade via signage in each location, the library ‘What’s On’, website, and computer booking system, to help them plan their computer use accordingly.

The project delivers on Council’s commitment to create publicly available spaces that offer access to communication technologies within the City of Connections. Once completed, our community will be able to research school assignments, search and apply for employment, and investigate their family history using the latest in web browser based technology, making it easier for our community to support their lifelong learning goals.

3 SPORTS FIELD LIGHTING UPDATE ON PROJECT STATUS

The construction of sports field lighting at Waterloo Park has been completed with testing and commissioning to occur this week. Should these tests be successful, the lighting will be operational from first week of November. The Macquarie Dragons Football Club intends to commence utilising the infrastructure from this date for their midweek summer soccer activities.

Council staff will be lodging a Development Application for the upgrade of lighting on Ryde Upper Oval. This will upgrade the lighting to the relevant Australian Standards for sporting activities. The Application will outline an increase in the number of poles from three (3) to four (4) and a change in the location of these poles. This is necessary to achieve a design that will be compliant with the relevant Australian Standards for lighting uniformity and lux levels for sports training. The submission of a Development Application will allow for any heritage issues associated with the park to be considered through the assessment process.

The Development Application for the Morrison Bay Park lighting proposal is currently undergoing the assessment process by a planning consultancy independent from Council. Due to the number of submissions received during the public exhibition period, following the receipt of the report from the external consultant, the proposal will come before Council’s Environment and Planning Committee for consideration.

5 GRANNY SMITH FESTIVAL

This year’s Granny Smith Festival at Eastwood attracted an estimated 90,000 festival-goers, with no major incidents on the day. Participation levels of the community at the festival, with 40 parade entries, almost 60 acts across six stages and 280 market stalls was extremely pleasing. This year’s event was again well supported from the commercial sector with the following sponsors: Aussie Apples, Macquarie Centre, Northern District Times, Better Homes Realty, Landmark Hotel, TVB, Hope FM, Vision China Times, Tracy Yap Realty, Bupa, Ryde Eastwood Leagues, Sydney Markets, Ayam Food, 2RRR and Event Cinemas. Ryde Youth Council reintroduced ‘The Core’ youth zone, hosted by the Ryde Youth Council in Glen Reserve and the adjoining car park at this year’s event. This proved a great success and gave the youth a space of their own. Council’s stall provided information to residents on Council services. This year Council introduced a large community blackboard where people wrote messages about Ryde, with over 500 people contributing to this project. The Granny Smith Festival, which was recognised as one of the top five events to attend worldwide by National Geographic, again showed why it is one of Sydney’s biggest and best festivals. Congratulations must go to the many dedicated and committed staff across the organisation that made this event the success that it is. Next year’s event is planned for Saturday, 17 October and will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Granny Smith Festival. Go to www.facebook.com/grannysmithfestival for Festival highlights. For further information on the Festival contact Derek McCarthy, Manager Community Capacity and Events on 9952 8384.
