DISCERN GOD’S PRESENCE

In the Gospels, Jesus often goes off when he needs to recollect his thoughts and focus on God’s will for him. The death of John the Baptist devastates Jesus. His cousin is murdered. He realizes that his mission as Messiah takes center stage as the ministry of the Baptist ends. Perhaps most difficult, he recognizes how violent those who oppose him will be. He desperately needs to pray for direction from his heavenly Father.

The people listening to Jesus also have great needs. They hunger both literally and figuratively. They seek hope and meaning in their lives. They had various afflictions. They need what Jesus has to offer them, so they keep following him deeper into the desert, away from their towns, not appreciating his needs.

Many times, in life, we are tempted to place our needs first. We resent those who keep placing demands upon us, who disturb our rest and do not recognize when it is time for them to leave. We may become sarcastic in our conversations. Other times we pretend not to see what is happen-ing in another’s life. Sometimes our friends will protect us and shelter us from seeing other’s needs. We rationalize that I deserve to take care of my concerns first.

The response of Jesus is instructive. He does not dismiss his own needs, but at the same time, he does not ignore the many needs of the crowd. The two are not in competition with each other. He heals the sick and feeds the crowd. He invites the Apostles to participate in the pastoral ministry. In not placing his needs above those of the crowd, he reaffirms who God has called him to be. He realizes that he cannot hide from what the Father will ask of him.

You and I need to spend time in contemplation and reflection to discern God’s presence in our lives. Our work cannot be our only form of prayer; we need to have silence and speak directly with God. We must be aware of when need renewal in our life. At the same time, we cannot use our desire and need for reflection to avoid our responsibilities to our brothers and sisters. In fact, it is precisely in pastoral outreach that we can appreciate God’s closeness. Finding the point of balance in this spiritual tension is important. Am I the kind of person that always puts others first or myself first? Do I welcome interruptions in my life or do I always react poorly to them? The next time you feel overwhelmed or wonder where God is in your life, look around. Is there someone who needs your help? Reach out and help them, and you may find the answers that you seek. -- Father Phil

THE INSTITUTE OF THE INCARNATE WORD

I am Fr. Jasper Santos from the Institute of the Incarnate Word, currently serving as missionary priest based in Hong Kong.

First, I would like to thank Bishop Robert Deeley of the Diocese of Portland and your parish priest, Fr. Philip Tracy for allowing us to do this Mission Appeal in your parish. Although we planned to speak at your churches in person, the Coronavirus has made our appeal to you via written communication.

The Institute of the Incarnate Word, a religious congregation dedicated to the evangelization of the culture. This means that we shall go and work according to the will of the Holy Spirit in every place He sends us. By preaching the Gospel in various forms, we help our Lord and the Church to uplift the cultures according to the stan-dard of the Gospel. This has brought us to difficult mission places, as in Gaza Strip, Syria, Tanzania, Guyana, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands.

Your contribution for this Mission Appeal will help these mostly neglected coun-tries, for example, the Solomon Islands. Perhaps, if I tell you about the Battle of Guadalcanal and John F. Kennedy and the PT109, you may get some clues about that country. There in Solomon Islands, we were assigned a parish living among the migrants from Kiribati. Our parishioners live in extreme poverty as their community is isolated from the rest of the country: no electricity, no running water, food is scarce, school buildings are collapsing. Even the healthcare service is poor. However, there I found people with deep and fervent faith. The Mass attendance is very strong, rosaries are said at homes every evening, people approach the sacraments. As the faith that is waning in the richer part of the globe, there in the Solomon’s it is maintained. We want to keep their faith pure and intact, so that the material poverty may not be a cause of spiritual poverty. We have activities to uplift the peo-ple, mainly through education, livelihood programs all to complement the spiritual activities as the administration of sacraments and preaching retreats among many others.

The Institute of the Incarnate Word uses the funds collected from the mission appeals to care for the disabled, the elderly, and the sick, provide homes for thepoor and for abandoned children, manage schools and educational institutions in rural areas in developing countries, and promote pastoral formation of ourmissionaries related to human, intellectual, and spiritual development. Present in 40 countries, our most challenging missions are in Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana, Iraq, Palestine (Gaza), Papua New Guinea, Peru, Syria, Tajikistan, Tanza-nia, and Ukraine among others. The collected funds will be used for the day-to-day support for missionaries, to supply material goods, to finish projects, and to meet the basic needs in rural areas where we work. The children, the elderly, the sick, the poor, the abandoned, the handicapped, and the suffering will benefit from these funds. Your support funds basic needs - such as food and medicine, pastoral works, vehicles to arrive to remote rural areas where there are no roads, to build seminar-ies and churches to provide hope where the Catholic faith is a minority or does not exist at all for the enrichment of the evangelization program around the world.

Thank you in advance for your support! --Fr. Jasper Janello A. Santos, IVE

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time Our Liturgical Color is Green

OUR FAMILY PRAYS: “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Jesus, help us to come as close to you as possible, each day, through prayer, the Gospels and kind acts. Help us to build the ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ on earth and work side by side with our neighbors, as your laborers. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

GOSPEL BACKGROUND: MATTHEW 14:13-21—JESUS’ FOOD NEVER RUNS OUT!All the readings this Sunday are about God’s unbounded love:

· First reading—Isaiah, prophet of the Old Testament, gives us an image of a banquet: God’s love is free, is available to all, has no boundaries, and never runs out.· Second Reading—St. Paul’s letter to the Romans stresses that NOTHING can separate us from the love of God, in Christ Jesus, our Lord!· The Gospel—Jesus’ shows mercy and pity on the hungry people with the ex-traordinary miracle of multiplying bread and fish to feed over 5,000 people, with 12 wicker baskets of precious leftovers for the next day! God’s ‘food’ meets our physical and spiritual needs.

SUMMER SERIES 2020—TRUE STORIES THAT HELP US GROW IN FAITH & ACTION: Meet Chef José Ramón Andrés Puerta, Catholic Humanitarian

Chef José entered cooking school in Barcelona, Spain at the age of 15. At the age of 21, he arrived in New York City as a young soldier in the Spanish navy, with only 50 dollars in his pocket! And now, as a world-re-nowned chef, he ‘serves’ the world with his God-given

gifts!. In 2010, José founded WCK (World Central Kitchen), a non-profit aimed at providing first responders who collaborate with local chefs to solve the problem of hunger immediately after natural disasters, around the world.

Between 2010 and 2013, Chef José co-taught a culinary physics course at Har-vard University; he was named dean of Spanish Studies at The International Culinary Institute, where he co-developed a curriculum in traditional and modern Spanish cuisine; and he taught his first course on how food shapes civilization at George Washington University.

When COVID-19 came to the U.S., Chef José was among the first to close his restaurants. He wanted to show chefs around the world how to use their restau-rants and workers to feed the hungry and those out of work. During this pan-demic, Chef José and the WCK have served more than 4.5 million fresh meals in 200 cities across more than 30 American states and other world regions, working out of places like libraries and closed restaurants; WCK feeds medical teams, hospital workers, students and others who have to keep working.

In one interview with the Associated Press, Chef José said this: “I’m in debt to America. ... That’s the best I can give to America because America gave me a home. America gave me opportunity. In a story on Catholic Exchange.com, he says that what drives his cooking passions and humanitarian efforts has always been his Catholic faith. “My faith has a lot to do with my life,” he said. “I was raised in a Catholic family that was always helping and feeding people. …As a little boy going to religious classes, I thought Jesus was so cool. He could do so much like make breakfast for fishermen. Jesus cooked it himself.”
