EVERYONE!!! • All black - Black leggings (for boys black pants are ok), black long-sleeve, black socks, black

fingerless gloves (All black allows for all cast-members to be easily incorporated into large-group songs: Be Prepared, The Stampede, They Live in You, He Lives in You, and possibly Grasslands, Lioness Hunt, Can You Feel the Love Tonight EXCEPTIONS: Mufasa, Young Nala, Young Simba, Scar – these characters will not need the fingerless gloves but may still need the full blacks

• GIRLS – TBD: may need a tank top in addition to long sleeve blacks (undecided between black &/or brown. This will be determined later as we move along on our lioness/grass costumes. Girls requiring a costume change must always wear a tank top and shorts beneath their costume.

• Footwear – TBD based upon character needs

• LARGE plastic tub bin with lid, large enough to hold all costume pieces & props (No bags. No boxes). Bin must be clearly labeled on side AND top with student’s name. We have 40 students’ stuff to keep track of for 10 productions plus dress rehearsals. Bins with lids are mandatory.

• Costuming Worksheet – to be completed by Oct 31 Nov 1and checked by director. A fill-in template is included in later in this presentation which can be printed/prepared at home. It should be inspected with your costume pieces by director between MEA & Oct 31. This form will serve as your checklist. Tape it to the INSIDE of your bin lid. It would be helpful to have a 2nd copy at home, in case you take any pieces home to wash between shows. Note: It is YOUR responsibility to make sure your costume pieces and properties are returned to your bin after each rehearsal/performance, and ready for the next one to begin. Always check your contents before leaving the building and when you arrive for curtain call.

• Everyone needs makeup AND remover– boys included! Beige Foundation base, eye shadow, eyeliner, mascara, blush, lipstick Several actors also require special character make-up. If your character requires face paint, YOU will need to supply your own makeup remover & pads for 10 performances plus 2 extended rehearsals. We also STRONGLY RECOMMEND finishing spray for your face makeup to resist smearing and running caused by lights, heat, perspiration, etc.

PROCEED WITH CAUTION

These pictures are taken from a variety of

productions to help you visualize the instructions we have written. Please

follow written instructions for your character and

discuss any variations with your director.

RAFIKI Rafiki is our eccentric baboon and should appear so at first glance – Use brown earth tone colors accented with varying shades of rust, blue. Burlap is an excellent texture to add. Think layers and lots of them, but not too heavy or our Rafiki will overheat! Layers could be created tying long strips of cloth to a rope around the waist & worn over black leggings. More of the same around the neck to create a full & bold collar. To the layered costume, add a headpiece (resembling an over-sized pineapple), colorful collar, and tall walking stick. Accessorize with potions & trinkets tied around waist or attached to costume, strappy wristlets and some big jewelry. On the feet, Rafiki could wear socks with holes cut for toes to stick out or Ugg-style boots. Depending on length of sleeves, fingerless gloves or finger extensions might also be fun but not necessary. Makeup: yellow around eyes, Blue/white cheeks, red accents only for our Rafiki

MUFASA, SIMBA, SCAR Adult lions HAREM PANTS Costume base from Harem pants with bold prints (or base color harem pants with print fabric draped and hanging draped through the legs front to back. Add Egyptian TAIL & WAISTBAND Egyptian-style rom front of waist down between legs and tail/tail hook. Mufasa - Brown with regal (red & gold) accents Simbas – Yellow or Orange bottoms & more earthy tones on top for Scar-Blacks accented with some orange/tan/rust/dark red Scar – needs black mane/head piece (pinterest) Prefer headpiece to be made from black rocker wig for ease of movement (prefer to surround the head rather than a tall above-the-head headpiece used on Broadway. Wig should still be tall may need 2 wigs to creat full circle and ) Add beads &/or bone-ish looking embellishments to base costume Black walking stick – cane height Scar makeup FOLLOW-UP NEEDED on shirts for all, collars (not Scar), wrist & ankle cuffs (not Scar)

Lioness We are still working on the details for our lioness costumes. So far, the thought is…. Black leggings, print skirt (provided but needs kick slit added) with black or brown tops. Add Tails & Ear Headpiece with veil (Headpiece needs to be crafted)

LIONESS INSPIRATION

TBD

NALA Nala & Young Nala We are still working on the details for our lioness costumes. (see note for lioness) Similar to lioness costume, but Nala can accessorize with more beading &/or fringe to be more set apart when she is playing her main role… Our Nalas must match eachother. Prefer patterned leggings that will coordinate with our skirt-wraps Tale – may prefer it to loop around front for solo dance numbers Headpiece – Shorter lioness veil when she is playing a chorus lioness (perhaps no veil/patterned arms/or different collar when appearing as Nala – discuss these specific options w/director & coordinate w/Young Nala)

Page 21: COSTUMES - DISTRICT 196learn.district196.org/.../17737/course/section/13902/COSTUMES.pdf · Role: HYENA SEEGULL GRASS n/a CHORUS HYENA CHORUS HEADPIECE hood ... Costumes: GIRAFFES

SIMBA Simba & Young Simba Our Simbas must match eachother! Young Simba may wear his Harem pants higher to create this effect. Vest top or check Indian costumes for fringy top that c/b embellished with reddish neck collar. Collar provided Tails – long enough to drape on the floor (3-4” inches for Simba, 2” on the floor for Young Simba) Headpiece for Simba – should coordinate with Mufasa so it is created in his likeness – Note Simba’s headpiece is blonder than Mufasa’s. Cloth (dark red or brown) tied around Young S’s forehead Matching drape/arm-wrap to Mufasa (or shared with Mufasa) – still needed Note Simba’s headpiece is blonder than Mufasa’s – in process Great paper mache tutorial for Simba:

BRIGHT BLUE FEATHERY COSTUME FOR OUR FLIGHTY ZAZU Add wings and tulle tutto tails to blue blazer & tulle around the neck Patterned bright blue leggings. Bright orange socks, felt feet Add feathery wingspan (bird-flapping) - but do not cover actor’s hands Add white gloves Head: Bright blue wig &/or maybe a small fedora with big felt eyes, orange beak & a couple feather plumes attached Face paint depending on costume NOTES: Please Keep hands and face visible – beak and eyes on headpiece recommended. Costume should be bright shades/colorful blues (NOT navy blue) and please avoid using white base in the bodice. No puppetry, but we would like Zazu to have a hand-held bird kite to fly during opening & closing scenes – pinterest! (can be made from styrofoam & paper, plastic tablecloth, nylon, etc.)

ZAZU

PUMBAA There are many Pumbaa costume ideas out there, but for our Pumbaa, please keep the actor’s face & head visible. Pumbaa can be suspended over the shoulders of the actor. A moving mouth with flappable tongue would be great fun but isn’t absolutely necessary to the fun character. A wacky or spiky black wig would be great and face paint is optional. Hind leds can be moveable depending on your materials for the main costume NOTE: Coloring should be more plum-colored than brown. We will have an abundance of brown on our stage already, so please keep this in mind for our Pumbaa.

Page 26: COSTUMES - DISTRICT 196learn.district196.org/.../17737/course/section/13902/COSTUMES.pdf · Role: HYENA SEEGULL GRASS n/a CHORUS HYENA CHORUS HEADPIECE hood ... Costumes: GIRAFFES

BANZAI, SHENZI, ED The basic hyena costume as for our chorus hyenas (provided), but embellished further with more fur & character than our chorus hyena costume. Coordinate the embellishments to be added, such as: Could add legs (Dads!) and a handheld head for these 3, but still prefer to keep our actors’ faces visible if doing that option. (Don’t hide them completely as in the picture below.) Ed needs a red dangly tongue which could be made with red felt or craft foam sheet. Some pipe cleaner might give it some curl. NOTE: THESE 3 CHARACTER COSTUMES MUST BE COORDINATED!

PRIDELAND ANTELOPE (2-3 actors) Straw hat, glue gun, 2 metal hangers, brown bags or paper, zip ties, 2 large sticks (3ft long), paint brown, black, red Create headpiece from pieces glued at an angle to straw hat – actor leans down and foreward slightly: painted styrofoam as wedge-shaped head, bent hanger horns (covered with brown paper or felt and attached with zip-ties on) Add red accents if desired. Also need two 3-ft walking sticks (from the backyard is fine)

Headpiece 2 walking sticks Full black

CRAFTING

Hyena Hoods Loose-fit hood: with necking (collar?) & attached big ears…add mohawk mane &

possibly collar. Kepp the closure quick & easy as this is to be added to our basic hyena costume (we will need up to 31 of these)

NOTES: Our hoods should be less elementary-looking than this, but the right idea is pictured here

Also, Shenzi, Banzai & Ed will need their own look, something that sets them apart from

the rest of the chorus hyenas, and each other. (ideas: furry vest, front legs, mane & head extension, etc) Ed requires a long dangly red tongue.

JULIE KIRSHBAUM - hoods ROBB THOMAS – peg legs

HYENA MAKE-UP*: Black nose & black circles around eyes, black lipstick.

Quick-change Hyenas will need a black bandit mask. A long strip of black cloth with attached ears & eye holes would suffice.

Lioness skirt alteration Add kick slit to our lioness skirts

Add elastic/alter as needed to fit actors MRS SKAAR

ERDAHL – SARABI & SIMBA ALTERATION

Page 37: COSTUMES - DISTRICT 196learn.district196.org/.../17737/course/section/13902/COSTUMES.pdf · Role: HYENA SEEGULL GRASS n/a CHORUS HYENA CHORUS HEADPIECE hood ... Costumes: GIRAFFES

CRAFTING Lion Headpieces – MUFASA & SIMBA, SCAR Some great & affordable ideas on pinterest

Using dollar store party balloons & paper mache Popsicle slicks, feathers or similar, glue & paint

LOOKS LIKE LOTS OF FUN FOR THE CRAFTY TYPE! ALLA BOULOS – MUFASA & SIMBA HEADPIECES

Lioness Headpieces & collars FEATURED DANCERS + additional chorus

Elastic headbands – NOT plastic! (girls could purchase their own or we can buy)

Attach lion ears & veil Veil fabric notes: lightweight, varies for each lion, with longer more regal look for Sarabi. Nala & Young Nala should match,

perhaps shorter lengths? (must be lightweight, flowing fabric)

Veil attaches with easy on-off elastic wristbands or ringlet More embellishments for Sarabi, a little more length for Sarafina, shorter lengths and matching veils (if at all) for Nala & Young Nala

CISA KELLER - VEILS Chorus of lions will also need some sort of collar – see note on

collars for Lion leads MRS SKAAR TBD – NO COLLARS TO DATE

Lion Tales* 4 males (Mufasa, Simba, Scar, Young Simba)

?# females TBD (6 FD + 2 mamas + 2 Nalas + 3-5 added chorus) Twisted raffia or old leather belts or lightweight ropes + duck tape

to create rounded look, frayed ends Must be attachable to costume with either safety pins or tied on

under shirt. Keep it light for easy movement. May add short 6-10” wire inside near top

(to help tail flare away from body) Nalas’ tails could loop around to front, lasso-ish

TBD – may add tales for only males, 2 mamas & 2 Nalas

CISA KELLER

Wrist Cuffs & Neck collars for Lead Lions (Think Egyptian collars & cuffs that attach with ties/velcro/elastic)

MRS SKAAR - FOLLOW-UP IFOR THOSE NEEDED Mufasa & Simba – royalty browns, reds, yellow or tan accent

Sarabi – golds & jewel embellishments (NOTE: Mufasa & Sarabi are royalty so add some metallic gold)

Sarafina – just more than the chorus lionesses (bigger?fringier?)

Simba & Young Simba – must be matching dark reds with tan trim

(no metallic gold for Simbas)

Nala & Young Nala – must be matching and should coordinate well with lioness costume pieces

Scar - Blacks, Tans, Orange, Red, leathery-looking

Grass Headpieces & Wristies Headband with grass plumes

Wristies – see previous note & picture KRISTIN HELOU – add clips

ELLE BECKER & CREW – finish grass 3-4 additional headpieces

MUFASA’S Drape/Wrap & Staff Signifying his royalty, Mufasa will need a regal African-

looking wrap draped from the back of his waist & over his right arm. In his left hand he may carry a staff. The drape wrap must be easy to remove (such as a tie for the waist) so this could also be passed to Scar & Simba later in the

show. Have 2 identical pieces is not a bad idea! FOLLOW-UP NEEDED ON THIS – TBD

3 Stage Zebras (full body) Model after this shape – moving hind legs are super cool but not necessary. May still require dowels to support front away from actor’s body &/or help keep the front straight….. Hats for the actors would be cute. Consider 1 extra set hind legs if ample materials.

3 stage zebras: MRS SKAAR MS BERDAHL CREW

4 aisle zebras (heads only) & 3 stage zebras (full body) Use these photos as a guide for zebra head. Not too small (15” tall for aisle zebras) Do NOT cut eyeholes! (We do not plan to use these as masks) In audience, these will be handheld or attached to dowel rods for actors to hold out away from their bodies For stage zebras, these could be used as the front of the zebra. Option to try: Consider making our heads either bi-folded or tri-folded, so center of the tri-fold is the vertical center of the zebra’s face. Taper to avoid looking too boxy. Stripe options: paint, electrical tape, black duct tape. Off-white cardstock available at school, as well as some scrap foam core. Please make at least 1 extra. AMY GORT (heads for aisle zebras)

A NOTE ABOUT FACE PANT & MAKEUP IN GENERAL FOR THIS SHOW We will have some makeup available and students are usually quite happy to share. However, you should be prepared to bring your own if you are concerned about hygene. We have 10 shows, so we will save the best makeup for our public performances. Cheap costume makeup tends to slide right off. For face painting, we recommend crème-based “Mehron” brand color sticks & palettes. Students should bring enough ziplocks & makeup brushes to keep each color (from their palette). Ziplocks will help brushes keep from drying out between performances. Finish spray is a must – ELF has a cheap brand at Target or Walmart which will suffice. We will have a few students available to assist with makeup and styling, and a couple parent volunteers. Students are welcome to do their. Boys & lead characters will likely require the assistance of other individuals.

SHENZI, BANZAI, ED - makeup Color Palette: white, black, brown (accent with yellow near eye?) Begin with a fairly thin white base covering face (NOT gray, and not too thick with your white or you’ll be like a clown) Add brown to lid & above brow area, trying to give each character a slightly different shape. For example, Shenzi could have more girly lashes painted to outer edges of her brown. Ed’s could be more round. Banzai’s could be more pointed and angry. Outline eyes in black & shape above the brow. Add: Black Mascara lashes. Color nose & lips black. Below is a great example of how to individualize the lips & brows, but we prefer a thin white (NOT gray) for the base color.

HYENA CHORUS - makeup Color palette: black Black circles around the eyes Black nose Rose lips Hyenas played by actors who play other leading roles or who appear as seagulls should wear black eye masks (provided) instead of black eye makeup

OR + black nose & lips

TIMON - makeup Color palette: brown, black, gray, white, orange/yellow as needed Outline major characteristics lightly in brown 1st

Add brown & gray shading. Next white & blacks, Last blend. “Hair” should be orangish, or a mixture of orange-red – see actor’s wig & go a shade darker.

PUMBAA - makeup Color palette: white, black, purple White base first, shade lids, add purple squiggles, heighten brows & create “furry” look to brows, line eyes, add burgundy lip color. (No sharp ring around outer face – take white to the hairline.)
