President’s Message Sharon Smith

We had a variety of activities this past year to keep our members busy while enjoying our cars and our time together. We have a great activities calendar planned for 2013, so be sure to block out time for Corvette ac-tivities in your 2013 social calendar. We welcome your involvement with the club by participating in events, planning events, and attending the monthly meetings. So for our year in review here is a sampling of how we spent our time in

2012. January started the year with a run to Flat Bread Pizza in Los Ala-

mos. It was such a great run that by popular demand you will find it re-

turning on January 5, 2013. February found members being participants in one event and spectators in an-

other. The zip line event that Fred and Anne Lopez organized turned out to be wildly popular with the mem-

bers, many of whom were first timers to this sport. It is making a return to the calendar in May. Hib and

Sandy Halverson’s “Occasional” Daytona Party was lots of fun even though the race was rained out. We

will hope for better weather in 2013 when the “9th Occasional Daytona Party convenes on February 24.

March found us at Thore Edgren’s home for a “Winos Gone Wild” Pinot Noir tasting. In September Dennis

and Lynne Merenbach hosted a fall “Winos Gone Wild” Viognier tasting. There definitely is a pattern devel-

oping with “Winos Gone Wild” events, and as long as there are all those varietals of wines to explore this

event will be part of the calendar. In April Jim and Judy Purcell took us back to a favorite venue, the Santa

Paula Airport and Aviation Museum First Sunday open house. In May I hosted our first “ladies only” event

with a run to the Vintage Fashion Expo in Santa Monica followed by lunch, and a drive along Pacific Coast

Highway. We have another “ladies only” event planned for May 2013. In May June and Art Aldritt took us

on a run to Santa Ynez Valley to view the “O” gauge model railroad and extensive “toy” room at one of their

fellow rail enthusiast’s home. This was a new and unique event and we all loved it. June started with our an-

nual installation picnic. Our club sponsor, Graham Chevrolet, hosted a car show with our members out in full

force showing their cars thanks to the organizing efforts of Bob and Inge Stallings. Simi Valley Corvette

Club and the Central Coast Camaro Club also had a nice group in attendance. June also saw Ed Clerkin

leading a road trip to the Avenue of the Giants. What’s not to like about the California Redwoods and the

awesome job that Ed does in putting that run together? July started with our annual appearance in the 4th of

July Santa Barbara Parade and fabulous after parade BBQ at Frank and Barbara LoMonaco’s. Frank &

Barbara LoMonaco and Fred & Sharon Smith went to the West of the NCM Party in Long Beach hosted by

Leslie Gardner, our local NCM Board member. It was a great day to socialize with other Southern California

club members, NCM Executive Director, Wendell Strode, and Dick Guldstrand, a Corvette racing legend. Oh,

what a night we had at the Ronald Reagan Library Sunset Rock & Roll Dinner. Thanks Fred and Anne Lo-

pez for promoting this event to the club members. Who knew that Anne Lopez had such impressive dance

moves? Our club members really looked cool and groovy dressed in rock & roll era attire. We all plan on be-

ing there or being square at the event in 2013. Peter Mackins escorted a group down to the Magic Castle for

an evening of dining and magic in the elegant Victorian mansion. In September our members joined River

City Corvette Club for their gathering at the Peppertree Hotel. We are always traveling in September and

miss this event, but I know our members who do go really enjoy their time with the River City Corvette mem-

bers. October found us following Bob and Inge Stallings on the back roads to Kernville. Curvy roads, re-

laxing afternoon by the pool, and a great dinner were the highlights of this run.

Earlier in November we had a very productive planning session for the Corvette Club of Santa Barbara’s runs for 2013. Included in the first quarter are runs to the War Birds Museum, the Petersen Automotive Museum, the very popular Wino’s Gone Wild and a run to the Mullins Museum in Oxnard http://www.mullinautomotivemuseum.com/the-museum.html followed by a run to the coast at Malibu for brunch. In January we have two events planned. Saturday January 5th is a run to Flatbread Pizza’s in Los Alamos. This was a very popular event last year and therefore are bring-ing it back early in the 2013. (for more info. see page 8) January 26th is a run to the William S. Hart Ranch and Museum in Santa Clarita, http://www.hartmuseum.org/tours.html. The Hart

Museum sits atop a hill within a large park area. It is a house mu-seum that was once the retirement home of William S. Hart, a silent-screen cowboy movie star. The Spanish colonial Revival style man-sion contains original furnishings, an impressive collection of western art, mementos, and early Hollywood and Native American artifacts. In addition, there is a furnished 1910 ranch house which is open for unguided tours. We would like everyone to feel a part of the organization and what better way than to head-up an event. If you would like to lead or host one of these events please let me know. If you don’t feel you would be able to lead one of these but would like to head-up a run later in the year we have a several, both short, one day, as well as multiple day runs. Please let me know if you would like to head-up one of the runs later in the year.

The holidays are less than a month away. If you are looking for something for the Corvette lover in your family, or if you are looking for something special for yourself, please check out the Museum store at the National Corvette Mu-seum. They have something for everyone: clothing, jewelry, car accessories, books, things for the home, things for kids -- you name it... they've got it. And they are running some specials for the holidays so some of their pricing is below what you'd ex-pect. And remember that Museum members get a discount on most items. They are offering free shipping on orders of $100 or more until December 9th. www.corvettemuseum.com

At the last meeting the club was invited to join the Simi Valley Cor-vette Club and the Central Coast Camaro Club for an open house at the Graham Chevrolet lot on Hope Avenue in Santa Barbara while their lot had been vacated for the tented sale at Earl Warren Show-ground's. The photo’s courtesy of Sandy Halverson tells the whole story. Rain, rain and more rain the entire time we were

there. The Camaro club had about 5 cars show, the Simi Valley Corvette Club had 5 or maybe 6 cars show up and Corvette Club Santa Barbara had 5 cars including Sandy & Hib Halverson, Chris Dennis, new member Ray Tracy, Fred & Sharon Smith and

Fred Markley and Rustie Van Buren came in Rustie’s trusty Caddy. Jaime Perez was there of course but he was on the clock and joined us in between cars he was working on. Everyone seemed have a great time in the showroom visiting like all good car people do. Dick and Matt Graham

were there of course and they provided a great lunch of great fresh Deli sandwiches and drinks. There was also a representative there with catalogs and samples of the Genuine GM Accessory Parts Division. All in all it turned out to be a pretty fun day. None of the Corvettes or Camaros melted but of course needed some loving care when they got home. Fred and Sharon Smith both won a raffle

prize for a Showroom Ready Detail courtesy of Graham Chevrolet

In November Tony & Paula Megowan led a wine run to Santa Ynez Valley wineries. As always they have done their research and provide great wine tasting and a delicious lunch which they prepare and pack up for the group. In November Graham Chevrolet had their fall car show and the skies opened up and our cars were in the lot in the rain while we stayed in the showroom chatting with other club participants. It was fun to get to share stories with other Corvette enthusiasts. Two of our newest members, Chris Dennis and Ray Tracy, were in attendance and we appreciate their bringing their cars out to the event. December will end the year with our Christmas party and gift exchange. I want to thank all of you who participated in our runs, planned and lead runs, agreed to be the tail car (to

watch our backs), and faithfully attended our general meetings to attend to club business. I appreciate your

willingness to give Corvette Club Santa Barbara a place in your life. I know you have many choices to make

on how you spend your time and I am so grateful that you have made time for CCSB this past year and I look

forward to your putting us on your calendar in 2013.

Remember without “U” there is no club

CCSB Christmas Party Sharon Smith

For those of you who have signed up and paid for the Christmas Party De-cember 8 at Mulligan’s Café & Bar at the Santa Barbara Municipal Golf Course. Event schedule: Arrival and cocktails 6-7 PM, Dinner 7 PM, and Gift Exchange 8 PM. Party plan is the same as last year: party clothes, great food and drink, relive the year’s events with Roger’s photo recap on the big screen, lively conversation, steal gifts, steal some more gifts and have fun. Participa-tion in the gift exchange is not mandatory, but it sure is a lot of fun. To be included in the gift exchange, you can bring one gift per couple, or one gift per person. Bring a new, wrapped item valued at $25.00. This is NOT a white elephant gift exchange. Please bring an item that you would like to take home. The gift can be, but does not have to be, Corvette related. See you Saturday.

MEMBERSHIP: The current count for renewing members and their cars is 76 members and 65 vehicles. MEMBER HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE MONTH:

Sandy and Pat had another great adventure in November when they went to Las Vegas for NASCAR Champions Week. This included watching a hilarious "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader" competi-tion of the top 12 drivers for the season with some of Las Vegas' very smart students, a lap, burnout and pit stop on the strip. There was a special after the lap performance at Planet Hollywood with the drivers put on the spot answering questions which were sometimes embarrass-ing but mostly funny for them. It seems there was just a little bit of drinking beforehand to loosen them up, which helped in the quips especially from Clint and Tony. Sandy had a special moment of her own with a high five from the 2012 winner, Bad Brad, as he walked down to the stage. There were also good times for our two ladies at Toby's I Love This Bar and Jimmy's Margaritaville. Hib thought he might join them next year be-cause they sounded like it was just too much fun to pass up!

They pride themselves on their food, their service, and the warmth of their hearth. Every weekend they convert their production bakery space into a restaurant and invite our neighbors and the community to gather around our stone hearth and enjoy freshly prepared Flatbreads. Each week they shop at area farmers' markets and talk with growers, farmers, and artisan food pro-ducers, so that they can offer our restaurant guests the freshest sea-sonal ingredients possible.
