Student of the Yearby Ashley Smith

Every year, one senior at HHS is selected to be Student of the Year. This student is selected based

on GPA, EOC, ACT scores, and advanced or dual enrollment courses that he or she has taken throughout high school. The student must also show leadership, have good citizenship, and have done community service. Then, the student must write a paper on the four years he or she has spent at Haughton and be interviewed by a panel of HHS teachers.

The student who proved excellent in all of these categories is this year’s Student of the Year, Dakota Digilormo. He has maintained a 4.0 GPA and has an ACT score of 35. Digilormo is a member of the HHS Destination Imagination team, Creative Writer’s Club, Encore Drama Club, and the ACT Travelers. He is also

Head Programmer of the Robotics Club and Editor of the Corsaire. Digilormo participated in the Bossier Youth Leadership program. He has given back to his community over the past four years through community involvement and Beta Club.

As Student of the Year, Digilormo had to create a portfolio showing all of his achievements over his high school years and write an autobiography. These were judged, along with books and papers created by the student of the year from each school in the parish, by the Bossier Parish School Board.

When asked about Digilormo, Graduation Coach Mrs. George said, “I think he is a phenomenal young man; he represented Haughton very well, and we are very proud of him.”

Digilormo made it very far in the

competition, placing in the top three students of Bossier Parish. He will be recognized for his outstanding achievement of Parish Finalist at the school board meeting on March 19th at 6:00 P.M. in the BIC building next to Airline High School.

Fright Nightby Lillian Poe

Although it is the day before

Valentine’s Day, love and hearts may be the last thing on people’s minds today. This day is the first of three Friday the thirteenths of this year. The fear of the day seems irrational, but what started this distrust of a day on the calendar?

One origin of Friday the 13th could have been started with Judas at the Last Supper. Judas was the thirteenth guest

to arrive, and he later betrayed Jesus. This significance may have started an irrational distrust of the number thirteen.

According to a Norse myth, twelve gods were celebrating at a banquet at Valhalla. Suddenly Loki, a demigod who was not invited, showed up to expand the party to thirteen. In the myth, he is responsible for chaos at the banquet that led to the death of another god, Balder.

In ancient Egypt, there was a belief among the people that the number thirteen brought good luck and was related to the afterlife. However, once the Egyptian civilization started to fall, they started to associate the number with the fear of death, rather than welcoming it.

Whatever the myth may be, people might want to watch their backs today!

On February 7th, 2015, the annual Lady of the Locket pageant was

held in the Airline auditorium. The twenty seven ladies participating were interviewed on the Thursday prior to the pageant, an important part of their scores. The pageant began with a parade of contestants strutting their stuff down the runway. Then, each lady introduced herself and had her walk down the runway. After that, it was narrowed down to the top ten girls. One by one, the girls were asked impromptu questions. During the scoring, the senior escorts for the girls entertained the audience with two different dances. The escorts were Ted Henderson, Sam Wallace, Javonte

Woodard, Seth Ryan, Pearson Harbour, and Trey Morris. Henderson also performed a solo to Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely.”

The judges had the hard job of narrowing it down to the top five. Special awards were also given out. People’s Choice went to Chelcy Swint; Best Dress went to Brittney Stone; and Miss Congeniality went to Mattie McCoy. The fourth runner up was Maddie Cummings, third runner up was Kaitlin Haley, second runner up was Jamie Phillips, the first runner up was Amanda Simmons, and the 2015 Lady of the Locket pageant winner is Madison Farquhar! The pageant was produced by Mrs. St. Andre and the Yearbook Staff.

After their final performance, the pageant escorts take a bow.

The top five ladies of the pageant were L to R Maddie Cummings, Jamie Phillips, Madison Farquhar, Amanda Simmons, and Kaitlin Haley.

Grab your best beads, most magnificent masks, and coolest

king cake because it is Mardi Gras season. It is Louisiana’s favorite time of the year; a holiday that only our state really understands and appreciates fully. Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday, is celebrated with grand parades, floats, and parties. A very important part of Mardi Gras is not just the celebration, but the reason we celebrate it. Mari Gras is part of the Catholic holiday Lent.

Mardi Gras occurs the day after King’s Day and before Ash Wednesday. It is a day of celebration and eating, Fat Tuesday. It is celebrated from Louisiana to Sweden, to Italy, to Belgium, to Germany, to the Netherlands, and all the way

to Brazil. It is such a popular holiday that it is celebrated worldwide. Each festival is a little different in the way they celebrate, but every one celebrates for the same reason. A classic tradition of the Catholic religion, Mardi Gras is a part of French culture and traditions. This holiday was brought and integrated by early French settlers in Louisiana. So, get ready for lots of king cake and celebration, just do not choke on the baby.

JROTC by Lillian Poe

Along with the new semester, Haughton’s LA 801st JROTC has made a few changes. For starters, on Thursday,

January 15th, 57 members of the leadership club received promotions at the bi-annual change of command. One of those members, Senior Cadet Col. Ricardo Auberach, inherited the title of Corps Commander from Senior Cadet Colonel Trey Jolley.

Jolley said, “Out of all the four years I’ve been in JROTC, I will never forget the life-long friends I have made.”

Many of the members of JROTC participated in Rocket Club. In Rocket Club, the cadets learned about the science behind rockets, and ultimately launched one at the end of the year. Now, however, the Model Aviation Club is taking the place of Rocket Club. The new club will feature a drone from the Air Force which features a go-pro camera—

meaning it can fly and observe what is seen through the camera.

Change of Command and drones are not the only events happening in the club. The Cyber Patriot, Drill, Color Guard, and Marksmanship Teams are busy this semester as well.

Junior Cadet 1st Lieutenant Nathan McMillian said, “The Cyber Patriot Team will be competing in round two of the Academic Bowl, which is a Quiz Bowl type competition.” If the team wins in this round, they will have a chance to compete in Washington D.C.

Junior Cadet 1st Lieutenant Davin Johnson said, “This is the first year the Marksmanship Team has practiced, and we have been doing great. I think next year we will be even better.”

Along with their extracurricular activities, the JROTC has raised over $3,000 for charities such as the local food bank and the Salvation Army.

As everyone knows, the flu is spreading throughout Haughton High School. The likelihood of a teacher saying that a student is not at school due to the flu has

become quite normal. The virus is getting a little out of hand because the flu shot does not cover the spreading strain of the flu.

To keep our school flu-free, try to prevent even catching this contagious sickness. Wash the hands with soap and water, and/or use hand sanitizer. Keep hands away from the face especially the eyes, nose, and mouth. Try to avoid contact with sick people. Do not risk getting sick. This will result in missed school days and a lot of makeup work. Practice good hygiene, get plenty of sleep, drink plenty of fluids, and eat healthy foods.

If one is feeling any flu-like symptoms, he or she should stay at home for at least 24 hours. Lastly, many have probably heard this since elementary school, but please cover the mouth when coughing or sneezing. If not, the health of someone else is risked. Also, make sure to throw away tissues after use. Stay bundled up and well during this sickly season.

Junior Emma Payne tells how she stays healthy, “I wash my hands 24/7. I didn’t get the flu shot, so I stay away from sick people!”

Best Friends for Neverby Madison Farquhar

You sit in your bed with a gallon of cookie dough ice cream in one hand, and your heart in the other. You have just gotten in a fight with your best friend. Fights with friends are heartbreaking, and sometimes they can end in tragedy, a.k.a. a friend breakup. You drop each other’s clothes off on their front porch to avoid any awkward confrontation, delete each other’s pictures off of Instagram, and basically do whatever you can to avoid that person. On the other hand, sometimes fights with your friends can be a refreshing opportunity to get out pent up emotions and talk about how you both feel, and your friendship can prevail, stronger than ever.

In life everyone changes over time. People grow up and they grow apart. It is hard to admit sometimes that it is okay to grow apart from people. It is okay to realize that your friendship is not allowing you to

grow and be who you want to be. Most importantly, it is okay to admit to yourself and your friend that you two are just not the same people anymore, and you are not compatible.

On the other hand, sometimes you have to fight for your friendships. No one is perfect, including yourself. There are times in life when it becomes difficult to compromise and work through problems. It can seem easier to just give up and move on. Healthy friendships are hard work, and you have to compromise and listen. The most important thing to ask yourself is if that person is worth more to you than your pride.

Some people will stay your friends, but some people will fall out of your life. Both situations will happen, and both are perfectly okay. You have to make the decision in your life whether or not that person is worth the fight; that is a decision that only you can make.

Dear Editor,How does one survive AP

Chemistry?Jam-Packed Junior,

Rachel Needham

Dear Jam-Packed Junior,I am not even sure, myself.

But we are in the same class, so we shall survive together, or go down as one! It is not that bad so far, though, is it?

Dear Editor,What should I expect out of

senior year?Just-Wondering Junior,

Ashley Menard

Dear Just-Wondering Junior,For the most part, you will

be torn between wanting to stay and wanting to leave as soon as possible. Regardless of which feeling wins, senior year is the time when one starts to notice how little time is left of high school.

Change is tough when things have been about the same for four entire years.

Dear Editor,I have an idea for the

newspaper: a comic section. I know there is a cartoonist who draws cartoons throughout the paper, but I am talking about comic strips. I want to help the newspaper. I can even make them editorial cartoons, based on Haughton High, featuring Bucky.

Spunky Sophomore,Gavin James

Dear Spunky Sophomore, If you would like, submit

a sample of your comic strip to the Newsroom. We may put it in the next issue of the Corsaire! Also, as you will be a junior next year, be sure to apply this spring for newspaper staff for next year.

Dear Editor,Why is the sky blue when

the sun is bright? Do some planets turn gray as a defensive mechanism?

Scientific Sophomore,Cooper Hollis

Dear Scientific Sophomore, Molecules in the air scatter

blue light more than red light. The blue light bounces around and hits our eyes, while the red light avoids detection. On planets, I have never heard

of them turning gray as a defensive mechanism. Unfortunately, I do not know how those two concepts could connect.

I apologize.

Dear Editor,In my dream, I walked really

fast, and my fast leg movement caused me to fly. Can you interpret this dream?

Speechless Senior,Patrick Montegna

Dear Speechless Senior,Walking in a dream signifies

moving towards your goals with confidence. Of course, it is a dream. For all we know, it could mean that you are going crazy. Who really knows? Too spooky for me.

Dear Editor, What is more of a bargain:

Dollar Mania or K-Mart brand chocolate?

Savvy Senior,Philip Phavorabout

Dear Savvy Senior, Store brand is always

debatable. Do those stores even have their own brand of chocolate? I would just go with a Hershey’s bar, honestly.

Dear Editor,How do I go about locating

the beautiful Betty White in order to make her my perfect Valentine?

Star-struck Senior,Audrey Trujillo

Dear Star-struck Senior,Get your adventuring hat on

because you’ve got a mission now. You have one day left, so grab a flight to Los Angeles and find the studio where Hot in Cleveland is filmed. Hopefully, she’ll be there. Otherwise, sneak around until you locate her. This is a daunting task, but I am sure that your Betty White-sensing skills are top-notch. Trust in them.

Dear Editor,What should I do if my

girlfriend moves 1200 miles away?

Solemn Senior,Zach Smith

Dear Solemn Senior, You can try to keep the

relationship going. If it is meant to be, then distance will not be a problem for you. However, you should also be prepared in the event that it does not work out. But I believe that if people want to meet again in the future, it is bound to happen due to sheer force of will.

Single Not Ready to Mingleby Lillian Poe

When we grow up, we watch movies and read books about “true love.” We ponder about that “special someone” that we are told we will one day meet, and whom we will trust and rely on. However, many have realized that staying single is the norm, and not at all looked down on. Although many students have found someone to call his or her significant other, others have decided to go through high school solo.

One particular reason people may want to stay single is that he or she is a genuinely busy person. Outside engagements, such as jobs, sports, or extracurricular activities, can get in the way of a relationship and can make trying to start one complicated.

Waiting to date until college is

also something teens think about because the dating pool will be more diverse, and it will be an opportunity to meet new people. Here in Haughton, many students have grown up with each other, and it is hard to see someone as a potential romantic interest whenever you know he wet his pants in first grade.

The main reason people decide to abstain from dating is simply because they are content with their friendships and personal relationships as they are. As long as you are happy, it does not matter if you never date, or if dating is your favorite pastime. Being happy and loving yourself is most important when deciding whether or not dating is for you.

What Is Happiness?by Mason Hooper

What is happiness? Take a moment to think about what makes you happy. Happiness is a friend in your life, but everyone has different types of friends. Your friend might be too overbearing and always around, or is only around during social occasions, or might have moved completely out of state. Happiness may be just keeping in touch.

Happiness could be finding money in your pocket, spending time with your best friends, or just shutting the world out and taking a long hot bath. Any way you put it, being happy is a great feeling.

Not only is it a great thing to want, but it is also a necessity. It is scientifically proven that positivity attracts positivity.

Happiness is also a choice. Not a red pill, blue pill choice, but still a choice. You are always in control of your own self being. Willpower

coincides with happiness; if you want it enough, you can achieve it, and all you have to do is will it.

Situations come and go, so do not let the circumstances of your current situation define you. You define your own happiness and that is all that matters. No one can ever take it away because it is always going to be yours. Contentment is essential in life. Do not let it move away, and even if you feel like it has, you can always give it a call.

Love Is Blindby Megan Birdwell

The Bible says, “Love is patient, love is kind…” but love is also very, very blind. The saying, “Love is blind” is something you hear all the time but may not know the extent of the meaning. Of course it means you overlook some physical imperfections of the one you love, but it also means you stop seeing all of the quirks that others may deem undesirable.

Scenario one: Little Jimmy looks so cute in those glasses, but your best friend Courtney rains on your parade by saying, “Little Jimmy’s teeth are way too big for his face! How could anyone think he is attractive?” Perception makes all the difference. Courtney does not share your unexplainable infatuation for Little Jimmy.

Scenario two: Margaret is just so funny! She always has a witty comeback, or at least you think so until Debby Downer comes from the woodworks, “Margaret is way

too sassy and rude. Who could like that?” Again, perception is everything.

To finish the verses in 1 Corinthians 13, “Love does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres.”

Listen to how you feel about the person you love because if the other person truly loves you too, dishonor, selfishness, and pride will be nonexistent. Love hijacks your eyes and ears, but in the most wonderful way!

Sunshine and Rosesby Ashley Smith

Who would not have fun hanging out with friends, sipping lemonade in the warm sun by a pool, or riding with the windows down and music up? Well, if you do not want to spend your days in the rays, then this is not the story for you.

Do not get down about the cold weather or having to be at school all day because pretty weather is not far around the corner. March 21st, the official start of springtime, is only five weeks away! Then, only nine days later, HHS is out for spring break. For some, it will be time for beach trips, for others it is a time to visit relatives that live in far off places. It will be a week for fun and to catch up on a little rest and relaxation. One thing is for sure, everyone will make lots of

memories and have stories to tell when school is back to make it a little more bearable.

It may only be a small taste of summer, but after spring break, the fun begins. There are many things approaching for the upperclassmen. Prom and Ring Ding are both in April. So get ready to dance until you drop, and juniors get ready to get your rings. After that, seniors will graduate and summer will be in full swing. So seniors, set your countdowns for 81 days and everyone else set them for 97. Then, get ready to spend your days sleeping in, getting tan, and smiling all of the time. Because after all, who does not love sweet summertime?

Not Another Dinner Date

Is dinner and a trip to the movies starting to get a little dull? By now, you two are basically on a first name basis with the ticket-taker at Regal, Steve. You have been to Newk’s so many times that you have the soups of the day etched in your memory.

If this refers to your relationship, take this as an opportunity to make a change and try something new. Dates do not have to be repetitive. Within our nearby community lies

more potential dates than just catching a flick and paying nine dollars for a sweet tea and sandwich.

A spin on the traditional date would be to plan a date to participate in an exciting Painting with a Twist class. You and your significant other do not have to be a Frida Kahlo and Vincent Van Gogh to paint something incredible because the class is designed for those who may be lacking artistic talent. Bonding over painting and creativity is a great way to make a date exciting and fun.

Sometimes the best dates are the ones that involve the least amount of effort and money. Another date option would be to map out the various

thrift shops in Bossier and Haughton and spend an afternoon together on a date sifting through scores of bargain buys! Set a budget of $20 to maximize savings!

In this wet, blistering winter weather, plan a day to spend together to bake a cake and watch Netflix. Decorate the cake just like the Cake Boss, breaking out your master icing techniques and eye for design. This date is definitely a great way to wind down after a hard school week and will not break your bank.

Get creative when it comes to dating. The most important thing is to have fun and treasure the times you are spending with your special someone!

Valentine’s on a Budgetby Megan Birdwell

High schoolers are always on a budget. Working minimum wage jobs, being under sixteen, and

getting ready for college puts a definite strain on the wallet. Fortunately (unfortunately), Valentine’s Day is tomorrow, so a few pointers on how to not break the bank are in order.

Homemade gifts are life! Hand-written notes are so sweet and guaranteed to make anyone melt. Reading a person’s actual handwriting makes everything more personal than if the letter was typed.

The stomach is the key to the heart. Learn how to make that special person’s favorite foods. Cooking something at home is generally less expensive than going to a fancy restaurant.

Grab some ingredients from the store and get to work! (Just try not to burn down the house… that is not romantic.)

Plan a home movie night. Fire up Netflix or go get some movies from Redbox for hours of entertainment. Not only are these movies cheap, but it is a lazy date, as well, so just sit back and relax.

Go on an adventure. Jump in the car and drive down that mysterious road that has been passed every day. It gives plenty of time to talk if that is the desired goal. Getting lost is the most fun. Just be sure and have a GPS to be able to get back home.

Valentine’s Day does not have to be dreaded, and having a great experience does not have to be expensive. Make it heartfelt, and success is inevitable.

The

Comedyorner

Ben Jacob and Mason Hooper

February is a month reserved for love, couples, and kisses. Valentine’s Day is the main focus for most people during this month, but we at the Comedy Corner say, “Nay.” February is the mother of the greatest holiday known to man, President’s Day, and what better way to celebrate than explaining, in gory detail, a battle for presidential supremacy. That’s right, a hypothetical battle between all the presidents to see which Commander in Chief would come out on top.

Every President’s Day all of our Founding Fathers rise from the grave to gather on the banks of the Delaware. There ensues an epic battle, each president equipped with a different specialized skill.

Washington, one-hundred forty-eighth time champion, armed with a sharpened ax and false teeth, owns the field with superior battle strategy.

Andrew Jackson is loaded with two double-barrel shotguns and a single barrel of malt whiskey.

John Quincy Adams creepily stares from under the pecan tree. At his feet lies

his father’s corpse, and in his hand a bloodied knife.

Jefferson is found on the side lines in a fist fight with Hamilton both arguing over the constitutionality of Kraft™ processed cheese.

JFK runs into battle, but a loud bang and a short drop later he remains motionless on the ground.

Abraham Lincoln uses a modified hat that doubles as a cannon that blows away his enemies. This comes in handy when fighting foes like Theodore Roosevelt, who rides into battle on a majestic horse with saber in hand.

Taft rolls into battle squashing his foes. He tries to take on the Kennedy family, who has formed into a quintuplet robot, missing the left arm.

Hoover is a master of camouflage as he hides to avoid the battle, much like his responsibilities.

In the grand finale of the battle, the Democrats and Republicans gather on their respective sides of the river and combine together to create two megalith beasts. One the mighty and proud Republican Elephant, the other the strong-willed and pertinent Donkey. Each goes into a long screaming debate, until the sun sets and they both are cast back to oblivion until next year.

Battle of the Presidents

Effectively Celebrating Presidents’ Dayby Madison Farquhar

When someone asks you which holiday is your favorite, President’s Day is most likely

not the first one that pops into your head. Let us be honest. The only reason you even know what day it is on is because of the glorious three-day weekend that accompanies it. However, this is a new year. Why continue your tradition of staying in bed all day and binge watching entire seasons on Netflix, when you could do something super fun to celebrate the presidents who came before us?

Here are a few ways to have a President’s Day cooler than Michelle Obama’s Vines about vegetables:

• Dress up like Abe Lincoln with your friends and watch Abe Lincoln Vampire Slayer.

• Adopt an eagle from your local pet store.

• Eat your weight in Bomb Pops™.

• Chop down a cherry tree while wearing your grandma’s powdered wig.

• DO NOT attend any parades or plays.

No matter what you do on President’s Day, do something that would make our forefathers proud.

Carnival season is almost over, so that means the parades are in full swing. Throwing

beads at parades has been a tradition since the beginning of Mardi Gras and has expanded to throwing other various items.

The tradition of throwing beads has been the trademark of Carnival season. This tradition has been expanded to other items as well.

“I’ve caught a life-like plastic snake, and it was pretty startling,” said Freshman Chance Santos.

Sometimes, people catch more practical items than beads. Sophomores Christina Smith and Tatyana Hamiliton said, “We’ve caught Mardi Gras

cups.”Edible items have also been

received while at the parade.Senior Steston Davis said,

“One time a float was throwing donuts, like not in the package, just a regular donut.”

Sophomore Jasmine Carwile said, “I’ve caught a hot dog at a parade.”

Some people even get less useful items.

Freshman Shelby Cooper said, “Once I caught an empty soda can.”

Sophomore Cooper Hollis said, “I’ve never been to Mardi Gras, but I think it would be cool to catch something.”

To those who have never been to Mardi Gras, get out there, put your hands up, and get ready to have some fun. Check out the parade this weekend to catch something for yourself.

The Back Room

Wrestlingby Amber Simmons The wrestling season began December 5th. Our wrestling team placed 2nd at the Arklatex Classic on December 21st. Juniors Dylan Holliday and Jonathon McClesky both placed first in their respective weight divisions. Holliday said, “Once you wrestle, everything else in life is easy. Wrestling is physically and mentally challenging.” Sophomore Johnny Vanveckhoven said, “It feels good when you win because

you practice really hard. Working for it comes out beneficial in the long run.” Coach Burton is truly proud of his team, especially this year. He said, “As a team, we have won more duels than we have in the past years.” The wrestling team will have a parish wrestling meet Saturday, February 14th. On February 19th, 20th, and 21st, they plan to attend the state wrestling tournament in Kenner, Louisiana.

Track Attackby Mason Hooper Ready, set, run! Boys track is back from the LSU Indoor Qualifier, which was held on January 24th at Louisiana State University with stats to look at. Josh Lister finished 4th in the 60 meter finals, Quinten Brown also ran in the 60 meter finals and finished in a respectable 9th place. Will Francis ran a 5:07 in the mile run, and Kyler Burns ran a 5:13. Both of those times are their career bests. With those stats they qualify for the Indoor State Championship. When asked about

predictions for the championship, Coach Brotherton said, “I think they will both qualify for the championship meet. They both have a legitimate chance to get on the podium.” The Bucs compete at the championship on February 21st at LSU.

Boys Spotlightby Amber Simmons by Lillian PoeGirls Spotlight Congratulations to Senior

Sydney Post! She has been chosen by Coach Melton as the February girls spotlight for her excellent work and dedication on the soccer field.

Soccer, for Post, began all the way back in the 4th grade, and she has loved it ever since. In the future, she plans to play on the tennis team of Haughton High School. Along with sports, she is also in FTA and FCA. With all of these activites,

she still maintains a 3.8 GPA. When asked about soccer, Post said, “I like soccer because my team is like my family. Soccer is my one and only love.” When one hangs out with close friends and endures the harsh times with them, they do become like a family. They help her keep her head high and brush the dirt off. Even if the team loses, smiles are still plentiful to share. Family is forever. Coach Melton said, “Despite adversity, Sydney consistently models some great intangibles which enhances her effort on the field. She is very much like a coach on the field and those are valuable to have.” As Wayne Gretzky once said, “You miss 100% of the shots you do not take.” So take a chance and do not ever be fearful. It is better to try than to not try at all.

Bucs Moving On

Senior Javonte Woodard signs with Louisiana Tech University.

Senior Will Haines signs with Southern Arkansas University.

Seniors Jamarcia Banks and Kody Cameron sign with East Texas Baptist University.

Congratulations to Senior Alonso Sifuentes! He has been chosen by Coach Wilkerson as the February boys spotlight for his hard work on and off the soccer field. Sifuentes is the Captain of our Haughton boys soccer team and has scored and had several assists this season.

Sifuentes believes that his sport is set apart from other sports because, “Scoring a goal is a crucial moment, and the scorer will want to celebrate like there is no tomorrow.”

Sifuentes started playing soccer seven years ago and has loved

it ever since. In the future, he would like to coach young players, and maybe come back as a coach for Haughton. His philosophy on the game is that he can never underestimate an opponent, and he is motivated by the saying, “Be better than the player you were yesterday.” Sifuentes prepares, in addition to practices, by analyzing soccer videos.

When asked about his love of soccer, Sifuentes said, “It is my favorite sport because of the reactions and feelings from when I score a goal.”

Sifuentes thanks his team and coaches and said, “My team this year was very young and still has some growing to do. Coach Geovanny has been pushing me to do my best, to be a leader, and I thank him for giving me the opportunity I have always wanted, which is being the Captain of the team.”

Sifuentes said, “Thanks for all of the support you have had for the team this year.”

As many may have observed, the HHS Cheerleaders have been working all year to perfect routines and cheers for sporting events and pep rallies, but many are not aware of the community involvement of the Cheerleaders. Due to the Cheerleaders’ active involvement, they have received the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Spirit of Louisiana Community Service Award. One squad in the state is chosen to receive this award based on academics, community service, school athletic support, and spirit raising activities. The Cheerleaders had a 3.8 average GPA, along with most of them being involved

in multiple groups, such as Red Jackets and BETA. Community events that the cheerleaders have participated in the Compassion Dash, Red Out for Rodney, Joe Delaney Dash, Susan G. Komen fundraiser, painting signs for other schools in the community, and many more events. As a reward, the Cheerleaders received pullover jackets and a $1,000 donation at the annual LHSAA convention in Baton Rouge on January 28th. Now, the team is nominated for the Varsity American School Spirit Award and could further receive a feature on ESPN and in the American Cheerleader Magazine.

The Haughton Highsteppers have been preparing all school year for this the event this weekend: competition. The Highsteppers will compete in Kilgore, Texas at Kilgore College on February 14th. The Kilgore Rangerettes, the original kick line, will be hosting the competition.

The girls have prepared a variety of dances of many styles to bring to the competition. The Highsteppers will be performing a kick dance to a Bon Jovi mix. The team will be doing a pom dance to Taylor Swift’s chart topper “Shake it Off.” Also, clothed in lab coats, the team will be performing a novelty science-themed routine to Oingo Boingo’s “Weird Science” mixed with Thomas Dolby’s “She Blinded Me with Science.” In addition to the team dances, the officers will also be performing multiple routines. The stepper officers will be doing a jazz routine using chairs as props to Christina Aguilera’s “Burlesque,” a kick dance to Calvin Harris’ “Summer,” and a contemporary routine choreographed to Sia’s “Chandelier.” Within the team, a select

ensemble group will also be performing a contemporary dance choreographed to Florence and the Machine’s “Seven Devils.” The team is excited to show off the routines they have been working so hard on in recent months. For senior members, this is a bittersweet time in the high school because this is their last opportunity to dance as Highsteppers. Senior and Co-captain Victoria Grillo said, “I am so excited for competition but I’m also so sad that, after four years as a Highstepper, this is my last competition. Some of my favorite memories in high school happened at the football games, basketball games, and practices we have shared.” Junior and Lieutenant Kacie

Wilkinson said, “I love competition season, but I’m sad that this will be the last time I dance with the seniors.” If one finds himself not being able to attend the competition, the team will be hosting a show off in the Boys Gym at 6 P. M. today, where they will be performing all of their competition routines for family members and friends. Catch the Highsteppers kicking in action tonight.

Softball season is here! The Haughton Lady Bucs have played one scrimmage against West Monroe, and there will be a home scrimmage on February 17th against Benton. The season officially starts on February 21st with the Parish Jamboree that will be played at Parkway. The girls have been working every day after school until 4:00 P. M. to prepare for the season since January 20th. The coaches this year are head coach, Coach Prather, and assistant coaches Stafford and Snell. Coach Snell has come from outside of the school to help the Lady Bucs. The coaches are optimistic about the season.

When asked about this year, Coach Prather said, “I expect to have a winning season. We have many young players in new positions, but I believe that they will rise to the occasion. We have strong pitching, and I believe we will be competitive in district.”

The baseball team has been putting in the work and now it is time to show everyone what they are made of- talent, dedication, and great hair. Whether they are rocking the flow, holding it down with a mullet, or keeping it classy with a straight-edge crew cut, the baseball boys make hard work look good. Sometimes a part of that hard work means sacrifice. When asked about his recent dramatic haircut, Junior Andrew Sewell said, “It’s all about what coach says, and coach said cut it, so I cut it.” Senior Sam Wallace said, “Without my flow I feel like a part of me is missing. It was a life

changing experience, but I think it was for the best. My hat actually fits now!” Although some players have had to sacrifice some locks, there is no doubt in the team’s mind that the hard work and effort will pay off. Sophomore Brennan Phillips said, “We’ve really worked hard this off- season, and it should show on the field.” No matter what hair styles the team is rocking, they definitely plan to live out Coach Maynor’s philosophy: “You have to fall in love with the process of becoming a champion. If you don’t want to put in the hours in August, you won’t get any results in the season.” The team plans to work hard in order to be successful on the field.

Super Bowl Controversiesby Megan Birdwell

From the end of the AFC championship game, then all the way to the end of the Super Bowl, controversy has been the theme. Tuned into NFL network all one heard was something to do with “Deflate-Gate,” derived from the former Patriots’ “Spy-Gate.” This term was infinitely used to describe the scandal involving the Patriots’ footballs being underinflated to fit QB Tom Brady’s preferences. Some speculated that the Patriots did not even deserve to be in the Super Bowl. Sports commentator Chris Chase said, “The New England Patriots cheated in the AFC championship. As such, the team should be disqualified from the Super Bowl.” Either way the New England Patriots not only went to the Super Bowl, but beat the NFC champs, the Seattle Seahawks.

In the fourth quarter, it looked like the Seahawks had the perfect opportunity to come back and win the game. A steady drive downfield, with an incredible pass to Jermaine Kearse close to the goal line, shifted the momentum to Seattle. Then, a very questionable call from the Seattle head coach, Pete Carrol, sparked another controversy. Why would a team with legendary RB Marshawn Lynch, on second and goal, on the one yard line, pass for the touchdown? Sports writers Will Oremus and Seth Stevenson gave the world their response, “The reality is that the unexpectedly ticking clock left little time for such arguments on the Seattle sideline. They had to call something, and call it quickly. And what they called in those dwindling seconds, under enormous pressure, was a quick slant

out of the shotgun. The thinking being that, even if the play didn’t score, a clock-stopping incompletion would function like a second timeout, leaving time for two more plays--one or both of which could be a Lynch rumble.” No matter what anyone speculates led up to this event, the Patriots have won Super Bowl XLIX, and there is no changing history.
