New Uniform Codeby Dakota Digilormo

The dress code has shifted dramatically since last year. Several

changes have been made; some impacting the student body more than others. For one, Oxford (button-up) shirts are no longer allowed, nor are any types of hats, with the exception of school-approved beanies in cold weather. In fact, any hats seen on campus will be confiscated!

However, the greatest change is that spirit shirts are no longer approved for daily wear. Instead, they can only be

worn on Fridays or approved spirit days. Daily wear is limited to red, navy, or white polos or one of the new “H Bucs” T-shirts. These shirts are sold by the school and can be bought for $10 each from Tardy Central.

Unfortunately, most students do not react favorably

to change. For many, the reasons appear to concern the monetary aspect of new uniforms.

Senior Will Francis said, “I don’t like the uniform changes because now all of the shirts I bought can only be worn on Fridays.”

Sophomores Taylor Finklea

and Chelsey Lewis said, “There are so many shirts that are red. Why should we only get to wear the H-shirts?”

Junior Kerstyn Riley said, “I work hard in my clubs and feel that I can show off my club spirit by wearing club T-shirts, but the new rule is taking away from our Buc spirit!”

The New Voice of the Announcements

by Amanda Simmons

Everyone has been there; it is the very end of first block and morning fatigue starts to set in.

Then, suddenly over the intercom you hear a springy, energetic voice that wakes you right up. Mrs. Marks has recently accepted the task of morning announcements and has been keeping our school updated since the beginning of the year.

Her newest announcement, however, is that she will be traveling class to class all throughout September, letting students participate during the morning announcements.

When asked in a recent interview what energy supplements she uses in order to be so hyper and peppy in the morning, she proudly said, “Zero. It’s all natural!” During the interview, the burning question everyone has been wondering was finally answered, “Where did ‘BE MORE AWESOME!’ originate?” She said she got it from Internet star “Kid President,” whom she finds adorable.

by Mason HooperThe Bucs in ACTion program is in full swing, preparing

students for the ACT. Bucs in ACTion was first implemented three years ago at Haughton to better prepare students for the dreaded acronym, the ACT.

Each morning, students spend the last twelve minutes of first block going over a lesson on ACT skills and strategies. The lessons are given by travelers. Travelers are students who scored high on the ACT and were recommended for this position by teachers. Travelers lead Bucs in ACTion and offer their own advice on how to tackle the test.

Over the course of this school year, the English, reading, math, and science

sections of the test will be covered during Bucs in ACTion. At the conclusion of each section, students will take a mock ACT over that specific subject to put their newfound ACT skills into ACTion. In the spring, the upperclassmen will take the ACT, and the underclassmen will take the the Inspire. The outcome of these scores is reflected in our school’s overall score, so make Bucky proud by giving full attention to your traveler and the important lessons they review in the mornings. It is in the students’ best interest to pay attention to these daily lessons because they offer valuable tips that will raise their score.

BE MORE AWESOME!

It is that time of year again. The Big Red Buccaneer Band is gearing up for

another wonderful season. The show is called “Fall of

the Titans.” It is a story from Greek mythology that tells how the titan Kronos rose to power. It depicts how Kronos overthrew his father Uranus and how Kronos’ son, Zeus, then overthrew him to become king of the gods. This year, for the first time, the band’s show has a voiceover narrating the story.

This year’s drum majors are Everett Miller, head drum major, and Rachel Rhodes, assistant drum major. Jacob Fields is the new field commander. Logan Turner and Jessica Tabor will be this year’s squad leaders. The soloists are Thomas White on flute, Allie Longino on mellophone, and Caroline Francis on baritone.

Mr. Burris said, “I feel like this show will push us to become a better band than we have ever been before.”

The one thing that has been blowing up social media recently is the #ALSicebucketchallenge.

Whenever anyone logs on to Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook, video after video pops up with someone getting a bucket, garbage can, or even a tractor full of ice water dumped over his head. These videos have been taking over everyone’s newsfeeds.

It works like this: a person gets nominated by someone who has already done the challenge, and that person has 24 hours to dump a bucket of water over his head. If a person does not complete the challenge in 24 hours, a donation of $100 is supposed to be made. Even if

someone completes the challenge, he still donates.

We all get how the challenge works, but do we all get why the challenged started? All of this dumping of water is to raise awareness for ALS. ALS stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. ALS is also referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease.” No matter what people call it, the ice bucket challenge is a way to raise money and awareness for this disease.

Videos of almost anyone doing this challenge, from George Bush to Justin Timberlake, can be found on social media sites. Not just celebrities partake in this event; students from HHS have been challenged to do it also. Even Ms.

Turner, Mr. Haynie, and Mr. Couvillion have taken on the challenge. The videos are fun to watch and fun to do, but some people still do not see the whole picture.

When people get diagnosed with ALS, the doctor is basically telling them that they will not be able to operate their own body. That is why people are challenged to dump ice water on their head. The sensation of the ice water creates a split-second feeling of what people diagnosed with ALS feel for the rest of their lives.

Since the #ALSicebucketchallenge began, a total of over 100 million dollars has been raised, which has increased by 3,500 percent from last year’s donations.

Dear Editor, How do I tell someone to leave

me alone because I do not like them?

Jezebel Junior,Emilee DeRouen

Dear Jezebel Junior, The best way to go about doing

something like this is to tell the person directly. Do not be rude about it, but be clear and do not beat around the bush. While it would be great if everyone could be friends with everyone, this does not happen in real life, as some people are simply incompatible.

Dear Editor, How can I stay in band and

JROTC if I want to be on the wrestling team, too?

Frantic Freshman,Zachary McCleskey

Dear Frantic Freshman,If you want to pursue all of

these activities, then you will have to manage your time very wisely.

However, since it is your first year here at Haughton, I would recommend that you decide which of these activities are most important to you and focus on those. This will make it much easier to add more activites later on during your high school career.

Dear Editor, Do you think anything

being made today (whether it be music, movies, cars, etc.) will be considered a classic in 50-60 years?

Old-Soul Senior,Everett Miller

Dear Old-Soul Senior,As time passes, objects that

were once considered “new” will inevitably become “old.” The only boundary between old objects and a “classic” status is popularity. If something remains popular well after its creation, then it has a high chance of being considered a classic. So, to answer your question, yes, I think that several things being made today will eventually become classics.

Dear Editor, What should I do if the guy I

want to go to Homecoming with does not ask me?

Scared Sophomore,Mikala Delgado

Dear Scared Sophomore,There is nothing that says the

guy has to ask the girl. If you really want to go to Homecoming with him, and you don’t think he’ll ask you, then ask him! It is that simple.

Do not be afraid to ask, since that could be the very reason he is not asking you himself.

Dear Editor,What is a productive way for me to spend my

break?Focused Freshman,

Brayden Jones

Dear Focused Freshman, Working on any school

assignments is a great way to start the break, but this will most likely not take the entire time. If you are involved with any extracurricular activities, then practice or work on projects for them over the break, if you have any. Do not be focused on production your entire break, though. The point of a break is to give you some time off from the stresses of school.

Dear Editor,It’s my senior year, and college

is around the corner. How can I decide which college I should go to?

Scared Senior,Victoria Grillo

Dear Scared Senior,If you have an idea about what

major you may be interested in, then you can start by researching schools offering that degree and comparing their programs. Do not choose a college based solely on a major, though, since you may change your mind during your college years. Look at all of your potential colleges and determine which might be the best fit for you.

Dear Editor,We are having trouble deciding

whether to get a Shelby GT 500 or a Fiat 500. Please help us!

Speeding Seniors,Bradley Rachal and Adam Holder

Dear Speeding Seniors,Well, “Shelby GT 500” sounds

a lot cooler than “Fiat 500,” I guess. So, you should go with that one. This is a perfect way to choose a car, right? Oh, also, make sure that you have enough money to afford whichever car you choose. It would be terrible to purchase a nice, new car without enough money to put gas in it.

Dear Editor,What are some tips for waking

up in the morning? Jaded Junior,

Camille BursonDear Jaded Junior,

Waking up is the worst part of the school day, huh? However, there are plenty of things you can do to make the process a little easier. In the morning, you can eat an apple or drink a large glass of water to help energize yourself for the day. Try using an alarm. Ultimately, going to sleep earlier may be tough, but it will be the best help in the long run.

Technology Overloadby Madison Farquhar

You are trying to prepare a traditional Indian dish for your adventurous best friend’s birthday. “Siri, how do you cook curry?” You are totally lost in downtown Bossier, and you have passed the same zebra tattoo shop four times. All you have to do is type your destination into Google maps and hope is restored.

It is no secret that today’s world is extremely dependent on technology. Everywhere you look, there is something bigger and better to top what has been done before. Although progress is a great thing, when everything moves so fast, it can be a little difficult to keep up with the hustle and bustle of updates and prototypes. Students at Haughton possess a wide span of opinions about the evolution of technology.

Senior Bailey Fayard said, “It is frustrating that as soon as you get comfortable with one iPhone,

a new one is coming out, and you have to start all over again.”

Also, some students worry about the social skills lost through technology.

Sophomore Brennen Templeton said, “Some social media sites are actually making people more antisocial.”

Although there are negative aspects to technology, it can also be a valuable resource.

Freshman Austin Foy said, “I like technology because it is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family.”

Junior Brie Brown said, “I like technology because the possibilities are endless. One day, we might even be able to print out real pizza!”

No matter your opinion on technology, we cannot deny that it will continue to grow and progress, and, like it or not, technology is here to stay!

Advice to Freshmenby Destiny McNair

Are you a freshman and need advice on how to get around campus or how to get through high school? Transitioning from middle to high school can be difficult. It is normal to feel uncomfortable and scared by being a new student. It might be intimidating to ask an upperclassman for help, but there is always someone who is willing to help. Taking a step outside of your comfort zone is okay. Do not be afraid to make new friends.

Always keep in mind that grades matter. Make sure you do your homework and prepare yourself for any upcoming tests.

Senior Victoria Grillo said, “Don’t procrastinate because it will haunt you.”

Another decision you can make to ease your high school transition is to join clubs! At Haughton,

there are many opportunities to join organizations. The clubs at Haughton include: Beta Club, Buccaneer Bookshelf Advisory Club, Leo Club, Science Club, Chess Club, Red Jackets, RAK (Random Acts of Kindness), Creative Writers Club, 4H, SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), and FTA (Future Teachers Association). Club memberships look great on college applications.

Despite the responsibilities of transitioning from middle school to high school, do not forget to just have fun! On Friday nights, support the Bucs and come watch a football game. Enjoy your high school experience while it lasts! Time flies right before your eyes.

Things You Don’tLearn in School

by Taylor BreedDuring high school, we do

not learn a lot about living by ourselves. In the next couple of years, we will be blossoming out on our own and going off to college or off to live without our parents, and that can be a lot to take in if you do not know what you are doing.

After high school, do not forget that if you do not take your laundry out of the dryer soon after it gets done, the wrinkles in your clothes will not go away until the next time you wash them. When you are on your way to college, make sure that you have a spare tire and understand how to change it in case it pops. When the dreaded tax season rolls around, make sure you know how to do your taxes and pay your bills because you now have the responsibilities of an adult, even

though you had to ask to use the restroom a couple months ago. It is not going to be fun when you get that email saying that you are late on paying your credit card bill. You also need to know how to get scholarships, apply for colleges, pay for college, and take out student loans, especially if it is your senior year. Overwhelming, right?

You need to know that the things people think and say about you now are not going to matter in a couple of years. Do not let people get you down just because they do not agree with your views. The friends you have today are probably not the ones that you will have down the road, but the skills you learn on the path to adulthood are the skills you will have for the rest of your life.

“I guess I don’t have much choice in the matter...”

Every Sunday, your news feed is filled with pictures captioned #selfiesunday. These self portraits have taken over Instagram; from duck faces, to just got my license selfies, to pictures when you are

bored. Even if you do not post them on Instagram, everyone has taken a “selfie” before, whether it be on Snapchat or any social media site. But the real question is, how do you get to the almighty triple digit

number of likes on a photo? Taking a good selfie seems to be an art form these days. Tip number one would be to find some good lighting. Last resort would be the flash on your camera, but first try to find some sunlight to make your eyes sparkle. Of course, once you snap the perfect pic, do not forget to put a filter on it. They give your photo that element of cool that you cannot get by deliberately attempting to look cool when that shutter fires. Because you know there is nothing quite as uncool as trying to hard to look cool.

When taking the perfect selfie make sure you are in the right place. A picture with last night’s dirty dishes probably will not get you a lot of likes, but a picture in front of Mount Rushmore (or even a cool looking hill) will surely make people hit that like button. A last resort to a great selfie would be to do something interesting in the picture. For a truly fascinating and postable selfie, paint yourself with flowers. Put a cat on your head. Do anything it takes to make your image stand out from all those other millions of selfies out there.

HoroscopesAries (March 21- April 19) - This is your year to get involved. Check out “Top Ten Trendy Tracks” on page 14.Gemini (May 21- June 20)- Your pink Razor phone can not necessarily be classified as “vintage” anymore. It is just tragic. Five Apps for SuccessTime for back

to school, meaning out with electronics and in with the books… Actually, it is back to school in the 21st century, meaning out with

the books and in with technology. These apps are sure to help get the grade and satisfy those technology cravings.

One thing that everyone has to look forward to is the ACT test. With ACT’s official app, “ACT Student,” a user can track progress for later use. The app is tailored for students by pinpointing strengths and weaknesses.

This next app is perfect for those who find themselves tweeting when he or she should be studying. The app is called “Study

Buddy” and it tracks your study time by detecting any time one does anything on a phone. It also gives motivational quotes during the sessions.

“Wolfram Alpha” is the go-to homework help for anything. Enter in a math problem, and it will give step-by-step instructions on how to solve it.

These next two apps are good to have in a back pocket: “Common Core Standards” and “TED”. The CCS is pretty self explanatory. It lists benchmarks set by the Common Core. “TED” is an app which provides users with daily TED talks, which are videos ranging from topics such as nuclear science to inspirational speakers. The TED talks are a great, educational reward after a study session.

Getting tired of the same old tank top, Norts, Chacos combo? Well, you are in luck because as fall approaches, it is now time to transition from light and simple to cool layers and intricate outfits. Toss out your tired high-waisted blue jean shorts and put up those sandals that still have sand from your vacation on them. It’s time to dig out your autumn-acceptable colored jeggings and all of your infinity scarves.

For girls, fall is all about layering. This season, it is predicted that riding boots will make a reappearance. These are super cute when paired with maroon, mustard yellow, or basic dark denim

jeggings. Add on a billowy top and a long knitted cardigan to complete your outfit! Do not forget to put on your favorite chunky rose-gold watch and a few bangles to tie your look together.

For guys, autumn is all about warding off goose bumps by keeping warm but still looking cool. Plaid flannels are in style, especially when paired with a solid colored V-neck. Invest in a quality pair of jeans that will get you through the cold season fashionably. Toss on your favorite pair of kicks, and you are ready to brave the cold. Do not forget to spray on a little cologne to complete your look!

The “Origin” of SeptemberBen Jacob and Mason Hooper

Prepare to hear a story you simply will not, and should not, believe. This, dear friends, is the tale of September. Long ago, in the year 1985, people were growing tired of the month called “Unnamed Time Lapse Between August and October.” This was mostly because it was incredibly strenuous and exhausting to write the date. So, like any good nation would do, they decided to rename said time period. In the country’s time of need, the people consulted the most knowledgeable and

innovative group of all time, the lumberjacks. The lumberjacks were a very proud and respected people. Their leader, Paul Bunyan, graciously accepted the task of creating the new month. Bunyan decided to take to the woods, a place where he often found the answers to his problems. As he meditated under the Great Oak, Bunyan hummed the ancient lumberjackian word of wisdom, “S’ep,” a mixture of “sure” and “yep.” Then, off in the distance, cutting clear through the crisp

morning air, came the mighty call of the lumberjack, “TIMBER!” In a flash, the name flew into his head. He knew what the month would be called- September. Paul ran back to camp and told his fellow lumberjacks that he had figured it out. They spread the news far and wide.

All across the nation people rejoiced in their homes, danced in the streets. Why heck, they even celebrated in libraries! The crisis was averted, all thanks to the lumberjacks.

Silly Bandz, Crocs, and hair feathers, oh my! The ghosts of trends past may still be lurking in the halls of

Haughton High School. Trends come and go in the blink of an eye. Some of us wish things would come back in style today. The only way these things can be brought back in style is for some brave soul to make the effort to bring a throwback back.

Senior David Rost said, “I wish fist bumps would be brought back. It was a very sincere form of encouragement

among friends.” Juniors Emilee Derouen and

Rachel Needham said, “Bell bottoms should totally brought back.”

Junior Chance Brown said, “Dude, Afros need to come back in style.”

Senior Cody Lilly said, “I really want to bring the Stanky Leg back; it was the best dance ever, and it attracted all of the ladies.”

So, be bold and rock those “lame” rubber band bracelets and high top Converse. You may revive an old craze. Whether it is dance moves, music, or friendly gestures, everyone has that one secret trend they wish could still be considered groovy today.

Oldies but Goodiesby Amanda Simmons

It’s Greek to Meby Ben Jacob

Everyone has heard tales of powerful gods and impossible monsters. For many years, people wondered where these strange stories came from. Most likely, these came from ancient peoples’ need to explain the unknown things that scared them. For example, the Greek god Zeus and the Norse god Thor came from the need to understand the flashing lights in the sky that we now know as lightning. The Roman god, Neptune, and the Egyptian god, Sobek, came from ancient peoples’ fear of water and the need for someone to pray to for safe travel across the seas. These stories were also used to explain where creatures originated.

Arachne, in Greek mythology, was highly gifted in the art of weaving. Arachne was no ordinary weaver, and the very act of her weaving was a sight to behold. Soon,

news of Arachne’s weaving spread far and wide and people gathered around Arachne to watch her weave. People were so impressed by her skills that they said that she must have been trained by none other than Athena, the goddess of wisdom and crafts. Arachne soon became arrogant and said that she was even better than Athena herself. Athena challenged Arachne to a weaving contest, so Arachne created a tapestry that made fun of the gods and showed their faults. Athena became angry and transformed Arachne into a giant spider who became mother to all other spiders. Today, people know that these gods are not real, and they do not control every aspect of daily life, plus everyone knows that spiders were not created through a weaving contest in ancient Greece!

Tips for a Nutritious Delicious Lunchby Megan Birdwell

Sometimes it is hard to find the perfect balance between “I really want to eat healthy, Pinterest-worthy little snacks!” and “I do not have any time to care about what I eat.” With a few tips, a healthy and tasty lunch can be possible!

For a main course, a sandwich may be an obvious choice, and, if the bread is whole wheat and the meat is low on fat, the sandwich will never go out of style! Vegetables and ranch are always a good idea for a side. They simulate

the crunching of chips without the fat and carbs that go along with chips. Try carrots or celery: Both of which make a great pair with ranch. Another delicious side is fruit! Fruits can be sour or sweet and take the place of candy. Since it is so hot outside, fruit is such a convenient alternative to the high calorie candies. If chocolate is a must in your lunchbox, dark chocolate in moderation is healthy for the heart. Dark chocolate can be paired with strawberries and raspberries, as well.

To get your salty fix, popcorn is surprisingly healthy! Triple butter may not be the healthiest, so you can buy organic popcorn at most grocery stores at an affordable price.

Eating healthy at school is a very manageable task with the right ingredients. Just take a little time the night before school and whip up an amazing lunch that will not only taste exceptional but also be exceptional for your body!

Haughton’s Got Spirit!

The 2014 football season began ominously with the Jamboree’s being rained out, but the regular season started off in a much better fashion!

In the September 5th game against Woodlawn, our boys won 41-31. The first score of the game was made by Woodlawn, but the Bucs rallied back after a great drive. QB Will Haines rushed five yards for the touchdown and the extra point was made by Nico Broadway. The next score was by Woodlawn in the second quarter. A touchdown was made, but our special teams blocked the extra point. The kickoff was returned to the seven yard line by Kei’untre Normandin for 93 yards. In the middle of the second quarter, Broadway kicked off, and the kick was blocked. Woodlawn’s special teams recovered the ball. A touchdown was made, but they went for the two point conversion and failed. Haines then rushed eighteen yards for the touchdown on the next possession. The Bucs defense held strong on Woodlawn’s next possession, and a punt was made back to the Bucs. Haines made a twenty-two yard pass to Duncan Smith for the touchdown!

The score at halftime was 27-19. Towards the beginning of the third quarter, Haines completed a pass to Josh Lister for eight yards and the touchdown. The next two scores were by Woodlawn, but the Bucs were far enough ahead that the lead held until the end. Notable stats for the game included: Haines had 77 passing yards, 2 TDs; the rush game was held up by Normandin, who had 17 carries and 144 yards; finally, Javonte Woodard had 17 receiving yards. September 12th marked a domination of the Benton Tigers with a win of 22-2. The first score of the game was made by the Bucs. Broadway kicked a field goal after an eleven-yard run by Haines. After a safety for the Tigers, the next score was made by the dynamic pair from Haines to Woodard for thirty-five yards! The Bucs have the next score with an eighty-six yard run from Normandin for the TD. In the third quarter, there was yet another score by the Bucs. A sixty-one yard pass from Haines to Woodard for a TD would wrap up the scores for the night. The defense had a great night as well. O’Shun Smith had six solo tackles and Chance Brown had five and a half

tackles (four solo). JT Bledsoe had two interceptions for the night. The entire defense had a statistically great night. Today, our football team will take on the Minden Crimson Tide at home. The game will take place at 7:00! Be there!

“One man can be a crucial ingredient on a team, but one man

cannot make a team.”-Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Congratulations to Senior Megan Birdwell! She has been chosen by Coach Prather as the September girls sports spotlight! Birdwell is an outside hitter on Haughton’s varsity volleyball team. She first played the sport four years ago and has dedicated herself to it ever since. About the sport, Birdwell said, “Volleyball is an amazing sport. It takes intelligence and thought to be able to play. It’s such a great release.”

However, volleyball is not Birdwell’s only extracurricular activity. She also participates in Science Club, Red Jackets, Community Involvement, Youth Church Council, and her youth group at Love Chapel. She is the Sports Editor of Haughton’s very own newspaper, the Corsaire! In addition, Birdwell competed for nine-and-a-half years in

gymnastics. Alongside sports and extracurricular activities, Birdwell maintains a GPA of 3.88 while enrolled in challenging college and AP courses such as College Algebra and AP Environmental Science. Coach Prather said, “Birdwell is a great leader on and off the court. She is an excellent example for the new players on the team and the returning players. She is responsible, hardworking, and respectful at all times. Birdwell represents Haughton athletics well.”

Congratulations to Senior Jamarcia Banks! He has been chosen by Coach Guin as the September boys sports spotlight! Banks is a right guard on the varsity foot-ball team and has been a starter for three years. He has been playing football for five years and previ-ously made the All-Dis-trict team as a junior. When it comes to

football, Banks said, “Hard work beats talent when tal-ent doesn’t work hard.” He has demonstrated his hard work by attend-ing scorching football practices for eight hours a week, in addition to practice time during fourth block athletics. Football is not Banks’ only forte. Along with his devotion to football, Banks also plays as a center on the Haughton boys basketball team. He spends hours of additional practice in both the fall and spring semesters in order to excel in his sports. Despite the time consumed by playing two sports, Banks also finds time to dedicate himself to his school work. He manages to maintain a 3.95 GPA while also being involved in the National Beta Club. Coach Guin said, “He is one of the team’s hardest workers and most dependable players.”

“Your team is now on the clock.” Ninety seconds was not a long time to pick fantasy teams. Everyone experienced that mad rush to find their first choice, see it was already taken, and regroup. With Fantasy Football becoming such a sensation inside the game of football, students around Haughton have all joined into the latest fad. So, who did the students of Haughton end up with on their teams? Senior Ked Henderson said, “Calvin Johnson and Tom Brady because they get points.” Junior Andrew Sewell said, “Marsawn Lynch and Dez Bryant.” Senior Brad Rachal said, “Tom Brady and Wes Welker.” Senior Adam Holder said, “Adrian

Peterson because he’s just the best there is and Dez Bryant.” Sophomore Brennan Phillips said, “Drew Brees only for the points and the Seahawks defense.” Senior Bradley Childs said, “Dez Bryant and Jamal Charles because they constantly put up points.” Obviously, Dez Bryant is a commodity for Haughton students. Going into week three, there are a few changes one may need to make. Ray Rice will not be able to play due to the charges presented against them. Wes Welker will also not be able to play due to the NFL’s drug policy. The top three quarterbacks are Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, and Drew Brees. A few mentionable running backs are LeSean McCoy, Jamaal Charles, and

Matt Forte. Calvin Johnson, Demaryius Thomas, and A.J. Green have done great statistically over the past two weeks, as well. If the opportunity presents itself to get a new tight end, Jimmy Graham, Julius Thomas, and Rob Gronkowski would be a few players to look into to obtain in a trade. Watch who gets injured, imprisoned, or even suspended indefinitely because NFL players could be in one day and out the next!

Get out your nets and start working on that spike because volleyball season is starting up again. The team has been assembled and has started practice. They have been cracking down and working out all the kinks in order to assure themselves a good season. Volleyball season officially started up August the 31st, when the team played their first game. The team had its first taste of action at this year’s Jamboree. The team played Byrd High School and won 25-22. Then, they went up against Leesville, losing 18-25. In other volleyball related news, the team announced that the first ever Haughton district varsity volleyball team will start next year. Speaking of “first ever” events, Haughton has just had its very first home volleyball game! The September 9th home game against Airline High School was the very first of its kind. Also, when interviewed, Coach Prather stated that Haley Smith, Emiline Hoskins, and Caitlin Tibbits were all doing great on the court.

The next game will be on September 16th against Captain Shreve at Shreve. The next home game will be on September 22nd against Byrd, Freshman at five and JV at six.

I My Sport by Madison Farquhar

Training in Progressby Lillian Poe

It is no secret that the sports teams at Haughton are a vital part of the community. Many students at Haughton are involved in at least one sport. We all know how much hard work goes into becoming an exceptional athlete and a team player, so the question that comes to mind is if all of the blood, sweat, and tears are really worth it. Senior Natalie Smith said, “I’ve met some of my best friends and have become who I am today playing softball.” Junior Christian Stanley said “Basketball is all that I’ve ever known, and I can’t imagine my life without it.” Sophomore Mikala Delgado said, “Volleyball is so much fun because you are constantly moving and participating. I love playing with my team!” Freshman Cade Thompson said, “I like playing football because hitting people is fun.” Freshman Cameron Townsend said, “I love baseball because I love the feeling after stiking someone out.” Being a player on a sports team is extremely hard work that requires determination. The students at Haughton enjoy the payoff of great friends, memories, and hopefully some wins along the way.

Everyone knows that Haughton’s sports teams are all superb, but not everyone knows how they got that way. Baseball players do not always hit a homerun the first time, and the basketball players have worked for that perfect play. How have our sports teams prepared for the upcoming seasons? While many of us were hanging at the beach (or, sleeping in), our athletes were hard at work. The football team has added some new assets to the team; they have two new Coaches, Coach Hassel and Coach O’Nishea. Also, they have 156 players, which is more than ever! They have been practicing and conditioning all summer, and are ready to dominate the field. Sophomore Cameron Taravella said, “We work really hard and we do a lot to make the team better. It’s a team effort.” On the court, the players have been working hard in pre-season by conditioning and practicing. “We’ve been doing lots of running,” Junior Bethany Knotts said. The baseball and soccer teams have been hard at work, and you may have seen the cross-country team training afterschool. The volleyball teams are also perfecting their performances, and you can catch them in their ongoing season through November.

Sports Drinks on Trialby Taylor Breed All athletes have their own way of getting ready for a game or getting ready to go work out. What most of them grab before they leave or right after they get done is some kind of sports drink. The question that needs deciding is, “Which one works best?” The athletes around Haughton have their own opinion of how their favorite shakes and drinks work for them. Senior Seth Ryan said, “I would say that Gatorade works good for refueling during a game and making it easier to recover quickly. Muscle Milk is a good post workout protein shake that helps get protein to my muscles and help me recover in time for my next game or workout.”

Junior Andrew Sewell said, “C4 works great for pre-workout, but has keratin, so if you have diabetes or are prone to kidney failure, it not be the best choice. Gold Standard Whey protein is the best post workout!” Senior Sam Wallace said, “For pre-workout I drink C4 and it just gives me a truck load of energy and it works really well. For post-workout, I drink Muscle Milk and I mix it with two scoops of peanut butter and that replaces what I put out during my workout.” Senior David Rost said, “I drink Gold Standard Whey Protein. It helps with my soreness.” Get out there and get your grind on.
