Saint of the Week

St. Augustine of Hippo

On August 28th the Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Augustine of Hippo; Bishop and Martyr, and son of St. Monica. Augustine was born at Thagaste, in what is now Algeria, in 354. He studied rhetoric and philosophy and renounced the Christian faith he had been brought up in, opting to follow the principles of Manichaeism. He taught grammar, rhetoric, and philosophy at Thagaste, Carthage, Rome, and Milan. In Milan, he heard the preaching of Bishop Ambrose a Father of the Church, who led him to convert and to be baptized in 386. He returned to Africa to live in a religious community in 388, and in 391 he was ordained a priest. He became bishop of Hippo in 396. He died in 430. St. Augustine is the patron of brewers because of his conversion from a former life of loose living, which included parties, entertainment, worldly ambitions, and grave impurities of the flesh. His complete turnaround and conversion has been an inspiration to many who struggle with a particular vice or habit they long to break.

Prayer of the Week

Frequent Communion

Today nearly everyone at Mass receives Holy Communion. Did you know that this was not always the case? In the beginning everyone present at the Eucharist received Holy Communion but this situation did not last. For a variety of reasons people began to receive Communion less frequently until, at many Masses, only the priest received Communion. The Church tried to reverse this trend by laws. Thus in 1215 it was the law to receive Communion at least once a year at Easter.

It was Pope Pius X who strongly encouraged frequent Communion in 1905. In 1910 he lowered the age for first reception of Holy Communion. In 1953 and 1964 the laws requiring fasting from midnight were relaxed. In 1973 permission was given to receive Communion even more than once a day if a person participated in two Masses for different occasions.

Perhaps it is important to remember that the purpose of the Eucharist is not to change the way we worship so much as to change the people who worship. We who gather at the table of the Lord are called to eat and drink the Lord’s Body and Blood so that we might be transformed into Christ.

Distribution of the Eucharist

The text which is used in distributing Eucharist is “The Body of Christ,” or “The Blood of Christ.” This is deliberately ambiguous and refers both to the consecrated bread being distributed and to the person receiving it.

Our response to “The Body of Christ” or "The Blood of Christ" is “Amen.” This is a sign of our assent to the true nature of what is being received and to who we are as well. It is a statement of agreement and of faith and should be enthusiastically affirmative. Copyright © 2008 Resource Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.

Prayer for the First Day of School

Loving God, school is about to start for this year. I'm excited and a little bit scared about what this year might hold.

Please help me to remember that you are there with me at new beginnings, as I get used to new rooms,

new teachers, and new skills to be learned.

Help me on the good days, but especially on the bad days. Help me to do my very best and to keep learning about you

and the world you gave us. Amen.

Now that I'm preparing to go back to the seminary this fall, I wanted to thank everyone for the warm reception I received here at Corpus Christi Parish. It was a real pleasure being able to meet all of you and I only wish I had more time to get to know you better. For those of you who would like to keep in touch, I would love to hear from you!

Please know of my prayers for you and please keep me in yours.

God bless!

Catholic Funeral F.A.Q. Non-practicing Catholics may receive Catholic funerals.

It is an unfortunate reality that many baptized Catholics no longer practice their faith and may consider themselves to have been away from the Church for too long to be ever welcomed again by the Church. Such individuals or their families may feel uncomfortable in a church and ultimately decide against having a Catholic funeral.

By our baptism, however, we have been made equal in dignity before the Lord, and the Church, our Mother, bears the suffering of all those who became her sons and daughters through baptism. Thus, the Church offers funeral rites (including a funeral Mass) even for non-practicing Catholics and, under certain circumstances, for non-Catholic Christians. Although the deceased may not have participated fully in the life of the Church on earth, the Church longs for her separated children to share in Christ’s blessings. She desires to pray for them and with their loved ones so that their sins may be forgiven and they may dwell forever in the presence of God in Heaven.

Are you interested in getting together with a group of women to explore your faith? You don’t have much Scripture knowledge, but you would like to see how the Scriptures apply to your everyday life? If so, we invite you to consider joining Walking with Purpose at St. Michael Parish. Weekly group sessions are starting September 27 from 6:30 to 8:00PM. We will meet at Sacred Heart Hall in Hallowell on Wednesdays. Opening Your Heart, our 22-week foundational Bible study is designed for women new to WWP as well as those with more Bible study experience.

Walking with Purpose is a Catholic Bible study for women that aims to bring women to a deeper personal relationship with Christ. Through personal study and small group discussions, the group helps to link our everyday challenges with solutions given to us through the teachings of Christ and the Catholic Church.

For questions or to RSVP, call or email Gail Gould at 623-8823/[email protected] or Daja Gombojav at [email protected]. You can also visit the walking with purpose website at www.walkingwithpurpose.com for more information. We hope to see you at Walking with Purpose this Fall!
