At One Step Beyond, Inc. (OSBI) we envision a world in which people with disability are fully included in all areas in our community and are recognized for their potential, their talent and their contributions to our society. Founded in 2002, OSBI opened its first life skills training and recreational center for adults with intellectual disabilities in 2004. OSBI has developed programs to meet the needs of participants and their families. All of these programs accomplish the clear goal of enhancing the quality of life for the individuals we serve. Unlike other programs in our area that only provide temporary or transitional support, OSBI participants receive the lifelong support they need to be successful.

2

OSBI has grown from two programs with 16 participants to an organization with more than 12 advanced programs serving nearly 300 participants ranging in age from 18 to 64. OSBI serves adults in northwest Maricopa County with campuses in Peoria, Surprise and Glendale, AZ. In 2015, we started a small and growing campus in San Mateo, CA.

Our Mission

To provide dynamic, responsive programs that engage the goals, talents, and interests of individuals with intellectual disability and empower them to achieve their dreams of optimal independence, enriching social networks, and effective participation in our community.

Who We Are

Who We Serve, What We Offer Our intellectually disabled population includes a diverse group of ages and disabilities. We have participants born with Down syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities, a large group identified as living with autism (ASD), and many others affected by disease, mental impairments caused in the womb or at birth, and some who received traumatic brain injury.

Quite simply: Money. The Developmental Disabilities Division of Arizona’s Department of Economic Security pays a small amount to us for each member, but this revenue only allows for the bare necessities of daytime care. Based on this limited income, we rely heavily on financial gifts, grants, and corporate sponsors to  maintain the quality  level of our services. Our donors are the real angels who support the ability to offer advanced services that make OSBI so unique.

Who We Reach Our organization is widely recognized for our contributions in the West Valley. In fact, we are known all across Phoenix, as well as

“This program is awesome and I am very blessed for the opportunities you are giving my son and continue to give him. Thank you.”

– OSBI Parent

What We Need

The age of our participants starts at 18 and ranges to age 60, but most are identified as young adults. Our participants want to live as independently as possible, contribute to the good of the community, work at a level of their highest ability, and even go to college. Perhaps, most of all, they want a community of friends that accepts them and helps them know they are not alone. OSBI provides attendees with vocational and culinary training; even work placement. We also offer numerous daytime programs including music, arts, fitness, dance, and Special Olympics. The quality of our programs is what makes OSBI stand out and leads to waiting lists for those who want to attend our daytime training. We have nationally known performing and design artists, as well as teachers, who want very little other than to share the depth of their knowledge with our attendees.

What is your company’s sense of responsibility towards the community? Does your CSR

align with our mission?

internationally, through our outreach including social media, county partnerships, and press coverage.

The demographics we reach range from in age between 25-70 years, possess higher incomes and education, as well as own homes and businesses. The gender picture is 60-40, women to men. The corporate sponsorship opportunities we offer allow your organization to take a public position in a multitude of ways—ranging from a premiere level of partnership with One Step Beyond, during which your company’s name becomes nearly synonymous with our nonprofit’s name through every form of outreach we have available … to simply sponsoring a package of participant showcases in the Phoenix area.

Your annual investment guarantees an extension of branding for your organization that will exponentially impact the citizens of Arizona. We offer at least 20 public events reaching more than 350 people per event and tens of thousands of consumers in our media network.

“Living with different abilities doesn’t mean

that we want people to feel sorry for us, or to

judge us. We have the same feelings, and we

have the same desires to be happy and be

grateful for what we have. Just because we may learn or respond

differently doesn’t mean that we can’t learn. It

may be harder for us, but we can do it. What we

need is for people not to judge us, but give a

helping hand.” -Brandon S.

Young Professionals Group for OSBI

This mix of Millennials, Gen-Xs and Ys meets six times a year for networking and advocacy for adults with intellectual disability. Various restaurants host these events, including Fox Concept restaurants, and your presence as a sponsor impacts an entirely new and growing audience of business professionals and others at the venues where the YPG meet.

Fall Brunch and Arts Showcase

Rather than having our most affluent donors attend “just one more black tie event,” we offer the alternative: a Saturday morning brunch and arts showcase. The food and mimosas are bountiful, as well as the beautiful fall décor. Experience the finest in a program and award show, as well as browsing the amazing work of artists who attend OSBI.

Golf Tournament and Fundraiser

Beginners and experts welcome. Prizes for everything from closest to pin to longest drive. Reach the men and women who have befriended One Step Beyond as donors, and simply those well-paid golfers in the neighborhood! There is no more popular sport in Arizona. We partner with cities and venues for extra reach and promotion.

Annual Outreach Events Available for Sponsorship

VIP Receptions Special evening gatherings in board members’ homes, or other unique venues, for OSBI’s most affluent and high profile guests. Your support of these intimate events will target the most exclusive of Arizona’s residents and even out-of-towners. Reserved for Gold Level Sponsors and above.

Dance Recital

Often presented at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts, this show presents a variety of types of dance featuring participants and some support providers. The event offers excellent exercise opportunities for our participants, as well as many weeks of planning and fun prior to the show itself.

Music Festival

Our music coordinator guides OSBI members to perform publicly using voice and instruments that showcase their unique talents. Small and large groups of members create their own bands and host a showcase of popular music and spectacle.

Theater Showcase

Immensely crowd pleasing, a new show of both music and acting is presented each year at Theater Works in Peoria. In past years, OSBI has featured Aladdin and Little Mermaid amidst sensational costumes, intricately choreographed dances, and compelling performances.

New Frontiers

All of our participants are given an opportunity to sign up for an annual excursion outside of the Phoenix area. In the last several years, New Frontiers has journeyed to California for Disneyland and Universal Studios trips, as well as beautiful campgrounds in Arizona. Every year our members look forward to an unforgettable trip.

Boo Bash

A Halloween Fete for participants, parents, and support providers. This event allows everyone to dress up portraying an assortment of silly and spooky characters. Fun fall games, music and food keeps everyone giggling and “showing off” for several hours.

Winter Formal

Twice a year, our members have an opportunity to experience special moments during formal dance programs that include music for dancing and splendid refreshments. This is a time for our adults to bring a date whether it’s a BFF, a group of besties, or a romantic partner. Chaperoned and guided by our support providers, everyone feels special.

West Valley Special Olympics

This is the most widely known and popular event our participants take part in in the West Valley. Fitness is very important to the adults we serve because obesity and diabetes can sometimes go hand in hand with their chromosomal conditions. In addition to a “Personal Fit” program, we encourage participation throughout the year in Special Olympics.

Film Festival

A relatively new program featuring a film festival during which our members will be able to present the ”best of the best” of films they personally make throughout the year. Our audiovisual production program, initiated by funds from the Arizona Cardinals and University of Phoenix, offers members the opportunity to engage in taping, creative dialogue and even scriptwriting. This is a time to showcase their creative skills and talents.

Prom

Prom is one of the two formal dances we execute and one of the most well received events, especially if a participant did not have a chance during high school to attend the “regular” prom. This is a special evening of glamour, dance, romance, and great fun.
