the freshest and most delectable wedding inspiration for the coming season.

If you’re in the midst of hunting down the one (the gown, not the groom – naturally)

then let these pages tempt, titillate and tickle your fashion fancies. Prepare to fall

hook, line and sinker as ‘Spellbound’ evokes enchanting visions of luxe lace, dramatic

shapes and opulent shades, while ‘Bride and Glory’ showcases an array of classically

elegant gowns, embellished with delicate detail and modish twists for magnificent and

super stylish measure.

Fantasising of a waterside backdrop to your celebration? Then you’re in the right

county for a wedding. At your service, we’ve taken a peek around a superb selection

of shoreline settings for your shindig. On the subject of parties, ‘Love Sweet Sound’

should help you solve any musical dilemmas while ‘First Dance Fever’ may inspire you

to take to the floor and entertain your guests with some fancy footwork.

And gents, listen up. If you’re a jitter-fuelled groom or tongue-tied best man feeling

the speech fear, fret not. ‘Speech Therapy’ will provide you with the dos, don’ts and

secrets to holding the crowd in the palm of your hand.

Add retro desserts, diamond rings and fabulous florals into the matrimonial mix and I

think you’ll agree this is one inspiring issue, which our little team have hugely enjoyed

compiling.

Can’t wait until the next issue? Check out www.wedmagazine.co.uk for venues,

dresses and ideas aplenty - and count on us to be there every step of the planning

process through to the ‘I dos’. Sweet dreaming.

If your flower arrangements could speak they’d probably plead, forget-me-not. Why?

Because many people become so consumed by the clothes or catering that floristry can

be easily overlooked. It’s one aspect of the day that can make or break the detail factor,

so consulting with an experienced and passionate florist will ensure that everything

from your oh-so noticeable bouquet through to reception décor hits the mark. Erica

Tippett at the newly established Bleujen Florist in Bude offers the gift of her expertise,

which includes a stint in a top florists’ in London’s Covent Garden. With her modern

and contemporary twist on classic training, Erica can apply her knowledge to create a

unique and innovative arrangement that will give you all the flower fix you need for any

occasion and setting.

"From ancient times, the wedding kiss has symbolised the joining of two souls. The bride must be kissed to look forward to a lucky marriage. The groom must be the first person to plant a kiss, followed by each person present. The good fortune can work both ways: kissing a bride is thought to bring about a resolution with someone you have recently argued with."W

ThE AIsLE Is YOuR cATwALk. GET sET TO sTRuT IN ONE Of ThEsE sERIOusLY hIp sTYLEs.

words Hannah May

Tell anyone you’re having a

themed wedding and you could

prompt a number of responses.

A dubious eyebrow raise, a

snigger, an acquiescing nod…

Some may not ‘get it’,

depending on the trend you’re

tailoring toward and everyone

else may say they’re happily

on board whilst they secretly

transform you into the talk of

the town like you’re about to

stage the nuptial equivalent of

a pantomime.

In short, it could go either way. It’s

very easy to spark some on-trend

inspiration and tastefully wind up

with a memorable result that’s

both very now and very you.

Remember it’s an individual affair

and a personalised interpretation

on what you, as a couple, are like.

The main themes of 2009 are

loose and intermingled. You can

opt for a reception in the style of

one whilst selecting a dress from

another without undue clash or

compromise.

Once again, there’s no prescriptive

science – just a plethora of mixed

ideas to dip into like a chocolate

box. Just remember not to over

indulge…

FEATURE: AISLE STYLE - DRESS TRENDS

GOTHIC ROMANCE

Cultural characterisations are bound to

inform fashion but this doesn’t mean you

have to don the DMs and a shed load of black

eyeliner. Unless you want to, of course.

The current take on Gothic is a non-specific form

of new romanticism. The extent to which you

adopt the features is your choice: anything from

the accessories through to a full on ‘Interview with

a Vampire’ homage is permissible.

Black dresses are making a staggering beeline for

dress shops at present. With occasion wear seeing

an overhaul in recent years and the banning of

black in lieu of funeral brights becoming a regular

request, it’s almost fitting that such a role reversal

may encourage the return of black elsewhere.

A sophisticated monotone theme can be achieved

either through the dress style or accessories:

black flowers, for example, are particularly en

vogue. Brocade overlays with black stitching and

patterning are a modern and very hip twist on the

Gothic theme.

Hemlines are usually long and dramatic veiling

and trains can really exemplify the vampish trend.

Alternatively, a minimalist approach whereby styles

are subtly woven into the gown, black beaded

bodice trimmings for example, or added alongside

it, such as long, floor-sweeping velvet coats, can

really embellish your exterior.

Anything that either smacks of or echoes the

Burton-esque look will ensure that the theme

reigns very coolly true.

VINTAGE

Vintage themes are migrating toward an

amalgamation of styles so that one dress may

include a number of features from different

eras. Rather than replicating styles from the

time in question, fashion is flitting between

looks and times.

Whether it’s a little bit of luxe displaced with

bohemian frills or full ‘50s skirts coupled with long

sleeved cover-up, vintage has been reinvigorated

to match your unique style specifications.

In particular, ‘20s flapper (preferably in pink) and

‘50s glam (Audrey Hepburn style) are sure-fire hot

steppers. The ‘60s are still a big draw, with maxi

dresses and ruffles exciting the scene, the ethereal

hinged keynotes striking many a fashionista’s

chord.

Consider incorporating the classic cloche hats of

the ‘20s or tea length chemises and tube dresses.

For more ideas from the ‘50s, ‘The Golden Age

of Couture’, delve into the prom queen persona

with flouncy skirts and killer heels. Modernise the

look with patterns and polka dots, coloured skirts

or a net petticoat. Accessorise with statement

jewellery and voilà! Step up and claim the crown

of vintage chic.

FEATURE: AISLE STYLE - DRESS TRENDS

EXOTIC

This is fast becoming one of the hottest

trends to hit the runways and houses of

haute couture of late. If you’re not keen to

take the colour route, it’s all about design.

If you are, then turquoise and bright yellow

are all the rage, while zesty orange, luminous

pink, blue, red, green and lavender are also

keen to make an appearance.

Forgoing all-out dress colour, these chromes

can be included via the minutiae such as ribbons,

underskirts, hems, sashes, shoes and accessories.

For the design factor, think ruffles, big flowers,

layering and sleek silhouetting. Combining floaty

fabrics with a sheer look is very reminiscent of

tropical island whimsy – the new exoticised take

on beachy that is awash on the runway. If you’re

considering marrying abroad and heading to

an exotic place of escape, these trends are the

perfect poison.

Colour and texture are the main components of

the look. It’s highly malleable, whether you opt

for Grecian exotic through empire waist goddess

gowns, or tropical island and oriental flowery with

a delicately embroidered number. You can really

shake things up and personalise the key elements

to suit your taste, taking the theme to whatever

end you rather stylishly see fit.

MODERN

You could literally go anywhere with this.

Modern wedding fashions are so broad and

diverse that anything from refuse tip recycled

to chav chic can now be readily justifiable and

exploited on the style stakes. The trick is to

lightly borrow rather than shamelessly steal –

the difference between pinching your sister’s

shoes and armed robbery, with, arguably, the

same scale of punishable effect.

Don’t fear that you’ll lose the reliable quality

of timelessness by opting for modern: you will

speak for your time and the instant of the marital

moment

This year, if you feel brave enough to bare for the

mini then you’ll snatch the status quo in one fell

swoop. However, variations on the theme allow

for a little more cover up for your pins, and an

alternative style sees long lines at the back and

short, thigh-high hems at the front (resounding

flamenco back-flared dresses).

Silhouetting is an important aspect to consider

within the modern theme. Sleek and slim are

making a comeback, though sculptured, multi-

layered creations fusing modern art with textiles

will ensure that the wow factor is most certainly

in play.

HAIRFEATURE: ACCESSORIES

Fashion has well and truly gone back to

black. Mix it in with a smattering of bling

and you have yourself one fashion-forward

finishing touch.

Monochrome is a strong theme on the wedding

scene, from dress detail to accessories and

beyond. Shots of black add an operatic flair to

your appearance, enlivening your look with bold

blocks of shade that function with dimensional

flair. Contrasting and complementary, think

opulent shades off set with pearls and crystals to

hook the eyes of the entire congregation.

A majestic way to achieve the look, a tiara smacks

of sovereignty. Whether you want to replicate

the princess style or simply embellish your crown

with some sassy shapes, these distinctive patterns

(1 and 2) will weave through your locks as if your

hair has swept through stardust.

More refined designs (3 and 4) are coolly signature

and suit a dress adorned with intricate pattern.

A beautiful bracelet sporting neutral greys (5)

or minimalist black necklaces (6, 7 and 13) will

pour the glamour puss into your ensemble with

understated yet classy allure.

RINGS

As Tolkien would testify, finding one ring to rule

them all is a tricky business. Instead of dazzling

your mind with all the options available, whittle it

down a little first. Are you going for gold? Set on

silver? Poised for palladium or platinum, gunning

for gemstone or jostling for jewel? Once the type

is considered, the finer specifics will follow.

Of course, you may be waiting for that eureka

moment when you stumble upon ‘the one’ (much like,

perhaps, how you initially encountered your future

spouse). In which case, it might already have snared

your eye right here on this very page. Alternatively,

these diamond delights may tantalise your ring

imagination to go exploring in all the right places…

A. Diamond encrustation is simply divine, and this

beauty will engage every eager eye in its vicinity with

breathtaking ease.

B. A classic yin and yang design speaks of an

intertwined meeting of minds. A beautiful centre and

balance of design is flawlessly en vogue.

C. Delicate and in demand, this ring is suggestively

stylish without subscribing to in-your-face overkill.

D. A ring fringed with diamonds is a subtle yet stylish

way to work some ‘ice’ around your finger whilst

maintaining a metallic allure.

E. A scattering is just as good as a smattering, and this

pretty piece shows how a little twist on an age-old

pattern can contemporise a key look.

F. Flaunting your best friend with finesse is the key to

wearing your diamonds inside out, and this design is

the perfect example.

G. Slim bands suit more dainty digits. Incorporate

some diamonds and create distraction by dangling

your ring into the vision of many an admirer.

H. A single shot of the desirable rock is a cool and

contemporary look, evidenced by this simple yet

brilliantly bold ring.

FEATURE: FITNESS TRENDS

The problem with fitness is perception. We assume that any attempt to

lose weight or tone up will involve teeth grit, profuse sweating and pain,

not to mention the potential public humiliation factor.

With a vast array of options to suit any personality, aspiration and time

constraint, you no longer have to just hit the gym and go through the

treadmilled motions in order to shape up. Interacting with an activity mentally

and physically is the key to health and conditioning – and the bottom line is that

if you enjoy it, it will become easier and more effective.

Cornwall is a hot spot for action. Arguably the leisure capital of the nation,

it offers an energising mix of beach chilled, adrenaline high and outdoor

adventure. We have compiled a series of fitness fixes that should hit the sporting

spot, whatever your tastes and abilities, whether you want to shed a few

pounds, sculpt your curves, vent some steam or escape for some pre-nuptials

stress busting.

KICK BOXINGBest for: Beating it out of your system

wed recommends: Nothing but the best. Recently crowned with her fifth

world title, Thai kick boxing champ Julie Kitchen runs a selection of classes

and sessions at Touchgloves Gym in Penzance. Practice your punches and high

kicks at the women’s bag work boxing class on a Friday night and finish up with

a round of abs circuits. Bust out your moves in the company of your man on a

Tuesday evening with mixed classes of more muscle tautening moves, and hone

your skills and heighten fitness with private daytime classes that are expertly

tailored to your needs.

PERSONAL TRAINERBest for: The motivationally challenged

wed recommends: Getting sweaty with surfer, skater and fully qualified

health and fitness all rounder, Stef Harkon. From Dogtown to the beach and

stints in the gym, Stef’s unique brand of training and experience of fitness

guarantees results across all levels, ages and abilities whilst promising a laugh

amongst workouts. Another specialist in his field, and with experience in

weight management and nutrition, swimming coaching and sports specific

training, Lee Stanbury’s wholly personable and versatile repertoire should be

all the fitness fix you need.

SuRFINGBest for: Getting wet and wild

wed recommends: Booking yourself in for some oceanic action with Hibiscus

Surf School, which is run by and designed especially for women. Go for half or

full day sessions or even opt for a hen weekend on the waves. There’s a reason

why surfer types look so drop dead fit and that’s because it’s one of the best

sports for fitness and figure sculpting, not to mention an adrenaline charged

ride like no other. For a relaxed and fun foray into the world of surfing – the

ultimate rush our Celtic oceans have to offer – bag some sex wax and hit the

water with the Hibiscus girls.

Contact 01637 879374 www.hibiscussurfschool.co.uk

HIP HOP DANCINGBest for: Beat boxers and bump’n’grinders

wed recommends: Making your moves at the cream of contemporary dance

schools, Fiona Richardson’s acclaimed The Big Dance Company. Offering a

variety of classes in freestyle, slow dance, hip-hop, break dancing, cheerleading,

ballet and lyrical, there’s a plethora of styles to suit any personality. The classes

are available to all and sundry from the age of three right up to professional

adult level. Whether you want to pop and lock or simply swish your behind

to the beat, your body will feel the well-toned force of some energised dance

exercise.

Contact Fiona on 01736 333444 www.thebigdancecompany.com

SAMBA AND ZuMBABest for: Hip thrusts and body shakes

wed recommends: Work out classes or hen parties that use all styles of dance

for fun fitness sessions. Great for stamina and toning – specifically waistline and

posture – Samba is a low impact, joint-friendly activity. In addition, it loosens the

hips and shoulders and bolsters confidence and co-ordination in one fine, sociable

swoop. With a warm up followed by a routine (perfected over a number of

weeks) and a cool down and stretch to end, the moves you master could even be

whipped out on your wedding day and any occasion thereafter. Also causing a stir

across the county, Zumba is a dynamic fitness programme which fuses hypnotic

Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves. Expect to burn calories, boost your

fitness, tone those limbs and, most importantly, have serious fun.

PILATESBest for: Arms and legs akimbo

wed recommends: Frequenting Dr Hannah Lloyd King’s brand spanking new

Pilates Studio for small group or individual tuition. Perfect for firming, fitness,

posture and rehabilitation, the programme is designed to suit your specific

needs and goals. Proven to provide a wealth of benefits across the board of ages

and fitness levels, especially with regards to strength and suppleness through

studying the skeletal and musculature systems, Pilates elongates your frame

by exercise, promoting the restoration of balance: something you’ll definitely

appreciate during the run-up to your wedding.

Contact Hannah on 07738 200030 www.bodyrestoration.co.uk

POWER-PLATEBest for: Stepping up to it

wed recommends: High-speed vibration training at Just Vibes. Though it

may sound like a game at an Ann Summer’s party, this form of exercise means

that short bursts of activity are all you need for a little au naturel uplift and

tummy tuck. Working with your body’s natural reflex mechanisms, the Power-

Plate generates a continual stretch reflex known as the Tonic Vibration Reflex.

Vibrating at 30-50 times a second, the muscles are stretched and contracted at

high speed, utilising more muscle fibres than during other types of training. The

method is especially good for the spinal and pelvic basin muscles, which will

strengthen and stretch alongside the rest of your body.

The Lifestyle Programme

Before you check out with the airline for your

bikini-clad honeymoon, check out your BMI

(Body Mass Index) and ditch some weight

before your wedding day.

If your index is 30 or more, you can join Lighter Life’s

weight management programme that will personally

cater for you in order to reduce your bodily statistics

and weight. Delivering four nutritionally complete

soups, shakes and bars every day, the programme

is designed to safely and healthily encourage weight

loss through diet management. You will need to

submit a health questionnaire completed by your

GP and attend weekly single-sex meetings to discuss

the reasons for your weight gain and most pro-

active modes of weight management. If your BMI is

between 25-29.9 you can sign up for the Lighter Life

Lite programme, which provides a low-calorie meal

plus three soups, shakes and bars a day to help you

decrease your index and flaunt the swimwear that

will keep you and your hubby snap happy during the

honeymoon and long after.

FEATURE: PRE-WEDDING PAMPERING

My skin was dewy and deliciously scented, my muscles were molten melted and my senses were somewhere else. If this sounds like your notion of a tantalising pre-wed state of being, then I suggest you read on.

We toil reassuringly hard here at wed. Delivering you the hottest news and ideas fresh from the Cornish and global wedding industries is no easy task and we work up the odd knot of tension in the process. We also know how stiflingly stressful the run up to your day of ‘I dos’ can be. With months or years of planning and preparation weighing your shoulders down, you need to know when to let someone tease it all out. And a pre-wedding pamper day is the perfect solution.

There is choice aplenty. You and your soon-to-be-spouse can ditch the pre-nup chats and escape for a lovers’ breather. A hen party can be staged in a spa. Take along mothers, daughters, sisters, brothers, girlfriends or head off on a solitary jaunt. All you need to do is lie back and enjoy…

At your service, we took to the tiresome task of sampling the delights of some of Cornwall’s premier pampering hot spots: The Penventon Park Hotel and Fistral Spa.

The hardest aspect may well concern your

selection. Whatever your need, desire and mood,

something will satisfy at The Penventon. From

beauty treatments such as scrubs and facials through

to Aromatherapy, Herbal Compress, Thai and

Indonesian massages, there’s an eclectic mix. You

can tailor your treatments individually, perhaps by

indulging in an Indian Head massage followed by

Reflexology or sampling some Tui Na and Hot Stone

therapy. Spa days include lunch and the use of the

leisure facilities, which feature a pool, Jacuzzi and

spacious sauna. Choose from the Indulge, Unwind,

Pure and Bliss packages.

I stretched out prostate to relish the blissful Full

Body Aromatherapy Massage. Beginning with a

full consultation to discuss medical, physical and

emotional being, the entire process is a personal,

holistic affair. Depending on your circumstances

on that day, your oils will be mixed specially to

suit. My therapist, Angie, suggested a warming and

invigorating combination of mandarin, geranium

and ginger, which smelled fantastic and percolated

deep into my muscles as they loosened into tingling

submission.

After three de-stressing deep breaths, Angie set to

work on my face, neck and head, smoothing and

kneading her way round my features as if she were

re-sculpting me into a softer version of myself.

My arms, feet, legs and stomach were all expertly

attended to before my back was pummelled pretty.

The ambient music lulled me further away from

the every day as Angie’s soothing touch enveloped

me, and I rose unexpectedly invigorated with

a distilled inner sense of calm – just in time to

return to the office…

FACE FABuLOuS

A week later, it was the Atlantic rollers of Fistral Beach that welcomed me to The Bay Hotel in Newquay and the luxurious Fistral Spa. My therapist, Clare, wafted scented testers my way; my preferences were picked and products matched to my skin type accordingly, so you can rest assured that you are personally catered for.

I always assumed that facials involved nothing more than the odd slapping of potion to skin, but I often like to be proven wrong – as I was in this instance when the multiple layering of luxuriant treatments spellbound my skin and senses.

The quality of the Espa products was exemplary and felt gorgeous. I was spoiled with repeated rounds of cleansing, toning, moisturising, oiling and exfoliation, not to mention misting, which felt like a cool breeze had jetted off the ocean and rested on my exterior.

Clare massaged and acupressured my face, neck and head to high heaven, while a mineral mask purified and nourished my skin. Having viewed the spectacle of Jerry Springer style cat scraps on TV, I never thought that having my hair tugged by another woman would feel so delightful, yet it did.

I eventually emerged with skin rivalling my 18-month-old nephew’s and was ushered like a sleepwalker back to the relaxation room for herbal tea and fruity nibbles. A quick jaunt to the architecturally impressive swimming pool and liaisons with the sauna, Jacuzzi and steam room completed my session of escapist abandon.

The spa offers a huge array of treatments for a range of parties and requirements. Facials can be express or super active. Body therapies can hone in on particular body parts or minister to the whole. With body wraps, concept treatments incorporating hot stones and advanced body treatments featuring ‘lifesaving back treatment’ and ‘chiropractic’ options, there’s a highly adaptable and varied service available to all.

Although all packages are created for both the male and female forms, gents can also pick from a selection of specially designed treatments, from body massage and the Surfer’s/Sports massage to the Aromatherapy Facial.

With yet more choice for your whimsies via half or full day packages and hotel and spa breaks, this top notch, stunningly located spa goes beyond doctor’s orders for pre or post-wedded bliss. Trust me.

COLUMN: CAPTAIN COLD FEET

Why do they refer to it as popping when it’s such an explosive question? From the moment you splutter those final four words that relinquish your single status forever, you fall instantly onto the minefield that is the run up to the wedding.

What for you was a realisation that you want to wake up alongside your lovely missus every day is a foreign fantasy world that she has inhabited since childhood. And the crux of the situation? She’s master in command.

Of course, you don’t have a problem with this. You’re a modern man who’s more than happy to let her have the final say on what to buy your sister for her birthday or which scented candles should go in the bathroom. But when you dare to sneak a peep down the rabbit hole she’s been burrowing, you may be shocked by what hits you: a total lack of control.

It’s not about vying to have the upper hand or exercising your manhood. But there’s something vaguely uncomfortable about your wife-to-be and female relatives collaborating to convince you that your waistcoat should be as pink as the pansies.

Guys, when the flowers start to appear more masculine than you, it’s time to wake up, smell some coffee and make a stand.

Granted: speaking up has the potential to create more hassle than it’s worth. You’re not that bothered about place cards, ribbons and ponies (or whatever) anyway, but the bigger deals you quite rightly want in on. Like how you dress, what you say and what you eat.

Broaching the subject can be tricky, but making it about her won’t break the flow she’s already established and will give you an instant advantage, otherwise known as psychological leverage. Don’t tell her that you don’t like any of her decisions – or you won’t appreciate the next one she’ll inevitably make.

Instead, there are a number of approaches: you want to ease her workload/surprise her/share everything in her life and so on. Tell her it’s an exercise in merging lives and remind her how well you know her, promising to consult with her before finalising any executive decision (making sure you follow through). Pick a few aspects of the wedding you know you’d be good at and go for it. Considering how stressed she’ll be, she’ll probably relish loosening the reins a little.

If that fails, remember this all-important fact: one of the reasons you asked her to be yours in the first place was to make her happy, so think of it as a warm-up to married life and job done. Plus, allowing her this moment (even though technically the planning can go on for several ego-crushing years) is one way of scoring some serious bonus points that can be subtly recalled for years afterwards as tools of emotional bribery, or should I say, marital bonding? It’s your call.

FEATURE: THE SPEECH

You may remember the scene from Four Weddings and a Funeral

where aristocrat Tom attempts to mimic Charles’s humorous

orations but fails miserably, instead insulting near enough the entire

congregation with bumbling ineptitude. It was hilarious, but for all the

wrong reasons.

If you fear an untimely death of speech (and thus, atmosphere) on the day of ‘I

VOICE POWER

According to research, a voice can switch off a mind

in less than five seconds. Though you may not be

aware of it, your vocal habits could be prompting

all manner of misperceptions on the part of your

listener. Public speaking, however, is a skill that can

be acquired through the correct training. And what

better way to establish steely nerves and a succulent

voice than by attending a Voice Engine Optimism

group coaching session? Also a great excuse for some

pre-nuptial male bonding time, conquer the crowd

en masse when you expertly spin your yarn via their

expert assistance. With their tutelage, you will be

able to talk effortlessly and maintain the captivated

attention of your audience rather than um your way

through to a barrage of stuttered one-liners.

www.voiceengineoptimisation.com

FEATURE: THE SPEECH

PREPARE. RESEARCH. PREPARE.Do your homework. If you're the best man, you

must get to know your subject intimately (and I mean

beyond stag/stripper/semi-naked debauchery). Talk

to a range of people for anecdotes and information

so you can compile a character profile like a criminal

psychologist. Write it down. Re-write it. Test it. Edit.

And you’re getting closer to the final cut.

This technique will make your oratorical offering

original.. Although you can find a feast of literature,

speech builders and penned examples on the web

and elsewhere, do not outright plagiarise anything.

It can sound contrived (especially if you forget

to substitute the right names) and someone may

well notice. Zoe McEwan attended two separate

weddings over the same weekend last year and

heard the same best man’s speech twice. “We sat at

our table and pre-empted the punch lines to each

joke,” Zoe comments. Not cool.

I know the desire to surprise with an under-wraps

pot of gold to a virgin audience sounds tempting,

but testing the water at least with a few family

members or friends may be revealing in a number

of prudential ways. If you want to avoid being the

social grenade on such an important day, then take

heed. Though an element of surprise is often key, it

won’t be fondly recalled if the groom’s reputation is

in unnecessary tatters or the bride learns something

she’d have been better off not knowing – ever.

Our resident groom’s guru, Captain Coldfeet,

concurs. “Don’t talk about the groom’s ex-

girlfriends, nocturnal activities connected to or

‘amusing’ anecdotes about women of old. And

definitely refrain from reminiscing about the groom’s

ex-boyfriends…”

A QuESTION OF TASTERemember – yes, you best man – that there are

limits and taste. This is better known as subjectivity.

Though I’m personally a fan of lewd humour, the

gratuitous approach doesn’t always suit the mixed

bag of audience you’ll be presented with (note:

there will probably be children present). What you

find hilarious may not tickle a single rib elsewhere

– another reason to test your speech on a few

guinea pigs before you hit the real stage. Think of

it as market research: listen to their responses and

amend accordingly.

Remember, a blasé attitude to others’ opinions

may result in disaster; you should certainly take

heed of feedback on the question of methodology.

Captain Coldfeet advises: “Don’t give your speech

gimmickry. Poeticising your speech only works

if you have the talent of Wordsworth or Keats,

otherwise it just sounds like a crappy limerick of

ludicrous length. And turning it into a musical ditty

is the ultimate in cheesiness. When I hear ‘Get me a

guitar’, I think get me a gun…” Indeed.

He continues: “Don’t talk about you, talk about

them! I have heard countless best man speeches

that amount to nothing more than a long-winded

self congratulatory explanation of why they have

been chosen to be best man.” You are simply the

messenger. Don’t give anyone cause to want to

shoot you.

ON THE DAY…Whilst standing up in front of a gaggle of guests may

pose a stifling issue for some, others will be gagging

to get up there and perform. Whatever camp you

fall into, there are certain rules of thumb designed to

add ease to the process and help you do your best.

Because that’s simply all you need to do.

Mark Picken, who recently tied the knot,

recommends the bullet point approach so that

the speech isn’t overly scripted and allows more

interaction with the guests. “Also, taking a deep

breath and remembering that these people are your

friends and family, so they’re all on your side, helps

take away the nerves. We had our speeches fairly

early on in the day, so it meant that I, the best man

and my father-in-law could enjoy the bulk of the day

without worrying about standing up.”

Though it’s tempting to indulge in a little Dutch

courage, it’s very difficult to talk coherently if

you’re ten pints in. Moderation (even though many

a Brit fails to understand its meaning) is definitely

compulsory here.

For fidget arses, public speaking expert, Julia

Schofield, recommends that you “practice all of

these professional tricks before the day: take your

watch off and put it on the table, pour a glass of

water, smooth your tie/rumple your cravat, check

your cufflinks, hold the back of the chair, check

your watch for time. Then choose ones to use from time-to-time during your speech. Nobody else will be aware of them and they will help you relax.”

She also advises you take a sound check before the room fills up. “Ask a friend to see if they can hear you from the back of the room, then add a little more volume to account for the number of bodies.” Stand up, draw in a few deep breaths and then smile at everyone before you start. “This puts everyone at ease, including yourself. Then, take lots of time.”

Maintain eye contact, and don’t forget the people at the back of the room. If you lose your way? “Take a deep breath, then carry on. These pauses always seem longer to you than your audience.”

Speaking of which, guys – length does matter. Raising the glass for a toast and spluttering a handful of words will do the moment little justice, but knowing when to stop is paramount. For the record, heckles, food throwing and a sea of shut-eye from the crowd are safe bets that you’ve over milked the cow.

Try to be as complimentary to all and sundry as you can be without inducing needless nausea or nose browning. You want to come off well, but, crucially, so does everyone else. This is not simply an excuse to slate people and arise the victor, no matter in how much good spirit.

Otherwise, relax and enjoy the experience. Though you ideally want the witty punches of a stand-up comedian, presence of royalty and oratory skill of a leading politician, don’t succumb to the pressure a gibberish wreck – a little genuine sentiment is all that’s really required. Best of luck…

Pie. Sponge. Trifle. The words alone are enough to make you feel all warm and gooey inside. I’m talking dollops of fresh fluffy cream, melt-in-the-mouth pastry, stewed fruit and honey-gold sponge oozing with jam. So do your weddings guests a favour. Forgo the fancy sorbet in favour of a desserts tray chock full of national treasures. Not only will your wedding breakfast benefit from a sophisticated retro twist, a selection of classic puddings is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. And the taste? Utterly delicious.

FEATURE: MUSIC

Have you ever found yourself on a sparsely filled

dance floor desperately trying to bust some moves

to an S Club 7 number, while a room of wedding

guests look on with glazed, inebriated or downright

bored expression? Me too. It was at that excruciating

moment that a painful truth was revealed to me:

music is often the most highly neglected aspect of a

wedding celebration.

I’ve seen brides spend an eternity agonising over the length

of their veil, the height of the bridesmaid’s heels and the

shade of lilac for the buttonholes, while the choice of music

barely warrants a flick through the Yellow Pages’ mobile

disco section.

It’s astonishing when you consider how sweet the rewards

of a fitting wedding soundtrack can be. Get it right and

watch in glee as your guests are swept up in the ecstatic

echelons of a truly rocking party. Get it wrong and expect

to observe a series of painfully awkward shuffles across

the dance floor, guests sporting that dreaded pan-faced

expression and, worst of all, an unavoidable sense of anti-

climax.

Granted, getting your wedding soundtrack right is a tricky

balancing act. While you may envision a play list that

reflects the musical tastes of you and your fiancé as well

as the theme or style of the wedding, you should also

consider the genre of music that will appeal to your guests

and lure them from the charms of the bar.

I suggest you take some time out from deliberating over

the vegetable side dish for the wedding breakfast and the

decorations for the cup cakes, and consider this oh so

crucial ingredient of your wedding celebration. You’ll thank

us for it later.

CEREMONY AND RECEPTIONIt will be one of the defining moments of your

life. So make sure your choice of ceremony music

not only creates an atmosphere but reflects your

personal choice as a couple. Trust me: let your

mother railroad you into a Michael Ball number

(unless you’re a fan of the Ball, naturally) and it may

just take the edge off the moment as you sashay

down the aisle. Live music is also a great way to

wow your guests at the drinks reception. When

making your decision, remember to consider

the style of your wedding and that all-important

ambience factor.

STRINGSWhether you envision the timeless beauty of a

classical number or the contemporary appeal of a

popular tune, strings make a mellow and stirring

soundtrack for the wedding ceremony. Both rousing

and romantic, consider a classical guitar or string

quartet for the entrance of the bride and the signing

of the register. Strings also make lusciously laidback

background music for the drinks reception.

Classical Strings

A highly accomplished violinist, Sue Aston boasts

a broad repertoire of music fitting for a wedding

or quartet. She even turned her dextrous fingers to

the human voice in conveying the emotion of

a moment. Pick a song or genre that means

impressive focal point during the drinks reception.

HEY MR DJNeedless to say, the DJ plays a crucial role in the

success of any party. Not only must the spinner of

tunes endure endless requests for ‘Achy Breaky

Heart’ from your gin-swilling aunt, he or she bears

the responsibility of dictating the pace of the party

and playing the right tunes at the optimum moments.

Whether you envision pop, funk, dance, rock, house

or swing, make sure you give your DJ an idea of

the genres of music that work with the style of

your wedding and will appeal to your guests. You

could even ask your guests to suggest tunes on their

invitation RSVP and create a play list for the DJ to

build a set around.

If you’ve settled on a live band, it’s still worth

booking a DJ if your budget will stretch, chiefly to

maintain the party atmosphere between the band’s

sets and, on occasion, to act as compere.

FIRsT dANCE FEVER

Ahh, the first dance. With the exception of the ceremony, this is

traditionally the most romantic moment of the wedding day: the

entwining of arms, the locking of eyes and the slow sashay of bodies

marking a symbolic celebration of togetherness and the commencement

of the evening celebrations.

But a moving smooch across the dance floor isn’t for everyone. If the thought

of an agonising shuffle to a James Blunt number fills you with dread of the gut-

twisting kind, then jump aboard one of the hottest trends in wedding world.

The YouTube generation has kick-started a renaissance in the traditional first

dance formula, as more couples abandon the smooch factor for the fun factor.

The video sharing website is chock full of couples who have pulled something

very special out of the bag on their wedding day, be it the cha-cha, the jive, the

robot dance, a hip-hop routine or a re-enactment of a classic movie moment.

FEATURE: THE FIRST DANCE

THE DIRTY DANCING DuOTiffany and Paul Bancroft learned the classic Dirty Dancing routine, ‘The Time Of My Life’ for their wedding at Watergate Bay in August 2008. Tiffany reveals all about her dancing experience.

Why did you want to learn a special routine?Neither of us were comfortable with the idea of a cheesy slow dance and we don’t have a favourite romantic song. We really wanted to have fun and offer something more entertaining for our friends.

Why did you choose the Dirty Dancing routine?Dirty Dancing is one of my all time favourite films. We looked at lots of other ideas including breakdancing to Run DMC & Jason Nevens ‘It’s Like That’, but Dirty Dancing seemed more achievable, it fitted with the idea of the cheesy first dance perfectly, and everyone knows it.

Did Paul take much persuasion?Yes! He was having none of it to start with but he quickly saw the irony and fun factor – and then he got quite competitive! His solo (where Johnny dances down through the crowd) was hilarious! Everyone loved it!

What were the highs and lows of the experience? When we had a million things to do in terms of planning the wedding and our extended honeymoon abroad, trying to fit in the lessons was difficult. We would fall out with each other over the moves, just like in the film. But the highs far outweighed the lows. Four of our friends were involved as they learned the moves of the crowd and helped with the lift – watching that come together was brilliant. It was amazing on the day: the female guests were crying and the men were stunned as we caught them totally by surprise. It was a real treat for our guests, and something they all still talk about.

Were you nervous? Yes! Just before we started we said we would forget about everyone in the room, pretend it was a rehearsal and just concentrate on each other. That really worked.

If you could turn back the clock, would you choose to do the dance routine again?Yes, definitely. It was worth all the effort and another special aspect to a perfect day.

One of the most famous examples is Julia Boggio and James Derbyshire’s ‘Time

of my Life’ routine from Dirty Dancing, which sparked a YouTube frenzy in

2007, notching up over five million plays to date.

Fuelled by the likes of Strictly Come Dancing, footloose brides and groove-

hungry grooms are making the most of their moment in the spotlight, using

the opportunity to challenge themselves, surprise their guests and, above all,

to have some fun. While some couples may be happy to muddle through a

routine themselves or enlist a friend with dance experience for advice, if you’re

determined to get the technique and footwork spot on, you can’t beat a series

of lessons from a professional.

Fiona Richardson’s The Big Dance Company hit the spotlight in 2008 when

dance troupe Flava got through to the live finals of Britain’s Got Talent. The

Penzance dance school now offers private lessons for couples who want to

learn a special first dance routine. “We offer a wide selection of dance styles

and specialise in doing something different and fun,” says choreographer Fiona.

“We’ll take on any challenge”. The preparation time depends on the routine,

“whereas a simple love song routine might only take two private lessons and

some practise at home, a big production may take up to four months.” You

can have lessons either at home or in the studio. Contact Fiona on 01736 333444 www.thebigdancecompany.com

Diversity is also the aim of the game for Karen Lane of The Dance Factory in

St Austell, who teaches a selection of dance styles from ballroom, Latin and

freestyle to salsa and belly dancing. “Although I find ballroom and Latin are most

popular, quite often I’ll be approached by couples with their hearts set on a

particular song, and I will devise a routine around it,” says Karen. “One of my

most interesting challenges was devising a cha-cha-cha routine to a song by The

Darkness for a couple who were big fans of both the band and Strictly Come

FEATURE: THE FIRST DANCETHE BREAK DANCING BASHSimon Williams learned a break dancing routine for his wedding to Kim at Tregenna Castle Hotel in December 2008.

What made you want to learn a special routine?I just fancied doing something different and challenging. Plus, I thought it would be a great surprise for our guests. Kim was originally going to dance as well but it just wasn’t going to be possible in her dress so I went ahead and learned two routines: I performed the first one with Becci Gowers from Flava. I also learned a special break dancing routine with Kyle Richardson from Flava in secret as a surprise for Kim. The routine involved challenging moves such as six-steps and head spins. We wore masks and tracksuits printed with ‘Kim and Simon’. She had no idea!

Why did you choose break dancing?I never really had a burning desire to be a break dancer as I was growing up but I think all men fancy being the one on the dance floor who can bust out the moves. Now, as I proved on my stag night, I can!

How have you found the dance routine experience?Extremely challenging and I’ve had to give it 100% dedication. I had to learn moves which can take years to master over just eight weeks. There have been plenty of aches and bruises but it’s been worth it. I’ve lost over three stone and plan to enter the British Street Dancing Championships this year. I am determined to continue dancing and to improve.

Would you recommend learning a special routine to other couples?Definitely. I only wish I had learned to dance when I was younger. It’s been an amazing challenge and the look on peoples’ faces was worth it!

Simon trained with The Big Dance Company 01736 333444 www.thebigdancecompany.com

Dancing!” Karen advises the earlier you start practising the better. “Although the

first lesson may seem a daunting prospect, once the initial nerves are over, I find

couples have a great time and really get into it.” Contact Karen on 01726 71766

Granted, the run-up to your wedding is a hectic time and squeezing in dance

lessons might seem like yet another item on an impossibly long to do list. But try

and see the lessons as time out from the planning process, an opportunity for you

to have fun as a couple away from making the favours and ticking off the RSVPs.

And, if you’re shy of the spotlight, get some friends involved. Enlist the best man

or the bridesmaids to be your back-up dancers and share some of the limelight.

Or, in true Michael Jackson style, get the entire bridal party involved as your

dancing entourage.

Groove is in the heart

Fire up those dancing feet with some first dance inspiration…

The split routine

This is the ultimate way to surprise for your guests. Start with a traditional

love song – Unchained Melody or When You Say Nothing At All are smooch

favourites – and break into something completely different such as a hip-

hop routine or the ‘80s robot. This is a perfect solution for couples short on

rehearsal time as it cuts down the length of the actual routine and thus the

amount of preparation involved. And just imagine those surprised whoops from

the crowd when you cut in with something totally unexpected.

The classic waltz

Whether it’s dresses, hair dos, accessories or menus, vintage is very much in

vogue at the moment. Extend the nostalgic yearning for the elegance of days

gone by with a classic waltz across the dance floor in a style akin to Fred Astaire

and Ginger Rogers.

The movie routine

The inspiration is endless. There’s the spine-tingling romance and sheer

sauciness of Dirty Dancing, Uma Thurman and John Travolta’s funky Chuck

Berry routine in Pulp Fiction, the hypnotic hip-gyrating of Saturday Night Fever,

the psychedelic grooves of Austin Powers or even the quirky brilliance of

Napoleon Dynamite’s outrageous moves.

The dance off

Can’t decide on a song? Mix it up with a dance off featuring excerpts from some

classic routines. Throw in some Britney with some Jacko, a bit of Elvis with

James Brown, perhaps a dose of Grease for good measure – and just see what

comes out.

FEATURE: LOVE PILGRIMAGE ACROSS CORNWALL

Looking for a romantic spot to sit and gaze adoringly at your spouse-to-be? Take a tour around Cornwall’s coast and discover a land steeped with love, both lost and won.

words Charity Wilson

Illustrations Zoe Elissa-George www.zeg-design.co.uk

Mini breaks are firmly divided into two camps: the party destinations

and the cities of romance. Admittedly there is some blurring of these

definitions when it comes to major capitals like London, but we are

fairly sure that Denzel’s stag night won’t take place in Florence, just

as Flora and Burt won’t be celebrating their 40th anniversary on a

three-night bender in The Radish ’n’ Razzles Club, Prague. Or maybe

they will... (perhaps that’s their secret). The point is, some destinations

seem to have romance all stitched up: Rome, Paris, Venice, New York…

We, at WED feel this is far from fair.

For many people, Cornwall has a sense of nostalgia; it harbours cherished

memories of childhood delight and smatterings of teenage beachside romance.

Boosted by the thriving culinary scene, with its numerous celebrity restaurants

and vineyards, this association with happy memories has sealed Cornwall’s

reputation as a lover’s getaway. The slightest glimpse into the county’s rich

folklore will reveal this to be highly appropriate. Cornwall’s Celtic history is

littered with legends of love: love that overthrew kingdoms, stories of truth and

mirth that can be explored in a tour around this glorious coast.

Starting on the north coast, we find St Agnes, a rugged outcrop named after

the femme fatale at the centre of a tragic legend. Hounded and adored, Agnes

rebuked the amorous attentions of her unlikely lover, a giant named Bolster.

Unaccustomed to the delicate beauty and purity that Agnes possessed, the

gargantuan Bolster was driven senseless with desire. So much so, that when the

woman asked him to prove his love – by filling the hole in Chapel Porth cliffs

with his own blood – the giant agreed. But it was a cruel trick. The hole was

little more than a shaft, at the bottom of which gurgled the north shore waves. The

giant lay prostrate, draining himself of life, convinced he was winning his true love. The

cliffs at Chapel Porth are still stained red.

Further west lies Zennor, once home to a love struck mermaid. Morveren, as some call

her, was drawn from her watery home to the shore at Zennor by enticing music drifting

from the church high above the water’s edge. Lulled from her senses by the soft voice

of a local fisherman, singing his prayers of thanks for a good day’s catch, the mermaid

crept ever closer to the danger of the human world. When he saw her listening at the

window, the fisherman was struck by her strange beauty and carried her back to the

sea, where neither ever resurfaced. It is said that the fishermen of Zennor still hear

the music of the young lovers, guiding them through the waters. If sweet and joyful, a

plentiful catch will reward their efforts; if it is low and mournful, storms await.

Visit the 500-year-old mermaid’s bench in Zennor Church and stay in the Grade II listed White House nestled in the heart of the village. Enjoy a refreshing pint at the historic drinking hole next door, The Tinner’s Arms, and swoon at the enchanting views from Zennor Head at sunset.www.tinnersarms.co.uk

Page 94: Cornwall-Wed-Magazine-Issue-8.html

FEATURE: LOVE PILGRIMAGE ACROSS CORNWALL

Land’s End hasn’t always been the proud holder of its title. Legend tells that

rising waters covered a kingdom called Lyonesse in the 11th Century. All

that remains of this country are the high lands (visible in the form of the Isles

of Scilly) and the clanging bells of its ruined churches, audible on still days, if

you stand at our westernmost coast. The lost kingdom was home to perhaps

Cornwall’s most famous lover: Tristan (or Tristram, meaning the sorrowful one).

Commanded by his uncle, King Marc of Cornwall, Tristan travelled to Ireland

to escort back the King’s chosen bride, Iseult. Through mishap and shipwreck,

the pair unwittingly consume a love potion that in turn consumes them. Loyalty

and duty force the pair to deny their love, but after marrying King Marc, Iseult

writes Tristan a final letter and dies of a broken heart.

If love potions have been instrumental in bringing couples together, piskies

have often schemed to pull them apart. One such incident involving meddling

faerie folk took place 200 years ago in St Buryan. William Noy, a local man, took

a fateful shortcut across Selena moor to get to a neighbouring farm. Having

abandoned his horse in the thick undergrowth of unfamiliar woodland, Noy

was drawn to the music and warmth of a quite unnatural scene: hundreds of

tiny people dancing and celebrating. His attention turned to the only non-smurf

in the clearing, a beautiful girl, who forbade him to touch her or the ripe fruits

hanging about the scene. On closer inspection, he recognised her as Grace, his

sweetheart, who had been dead for three years. Desperate to steal back his

precious love, Noy remembered that piskie magic could be undone by throwing

inside-out clothing at them (mental note). He duly tossed his inverted glove at

the changelings, only to watch his beloved Grace fade with the mischief-makers.

Noy spent years searching the moors, desperate for one final glimpse. He was

buried alongside her at Buryan Church.

Love stories are as prevalent in Cornwall as any other romantic destination.

From the tragic to the epic, they are as potent today as when they were first

told by the bards and poets of the time. We realise that you are busy making

your own love story, so if you need a break from the wedding schedule, try

standing in the church where Morveren first fell for a human, or walk the moors

where William Noy wandered in search of his one true love. We have even

recommended a few favourite overnight stays. Enjoy!

HONEYMOONS

MALTASlap bang in the middle of the Mediterranean, the

tropical archipelago of Malta oozes honeymoon

appeal. A glorious medley of sunshine, beaches,

ancient historical sites and an effortlessly chilled

vibe will leave both the beach bum and culture

vulture in you supremely satisfied. Enjoy a relaxing

few days exploring a landscape littered with

temples, tombs and baroque palaces, and unwind

on the beach or amidst the heavenly climes of a

luxury hotel.

DO Wander the fortified city of Valletta and

drink in the fascinating fusion of architecture,

idyllic gardens and breathtaking views across

the coastline. Stop off at St John’s Co-Cathedral

and marvel at its ornate splendour. Take a trip

to nearby island Gozo where the beaches are

gloriously sandy, the pace of life even slower and

the scuba diving amongst the best in the Med.

Catch a glimpse of Mount Etna, and lap up the

charms of ancient cities and rolling countryside on

a day trip to Sicily, which is only 90 minutes away

by boat.

SLEEP Prepare to feel very special indeed when

you check into The Palace in Sliema. The five star

boutique hotel is the last word in luxury with its

delectable cuisine, sumptuous accommodation

(choose one of the deliciously distinctive Designer

Suites), a rooftop sun deck and infinity pool with

panoramic views across Valletta.

VENICEYou want romance? You got it. As all your

preconceived visions of canals, gondolas and

baroque architecture unfold before your eyes,

prepare to fall hook, line and sinker for this

utterly unique world on water. Spend a seductive

few days wandering the labyrinthine streets and

feasting on the city’s vibrant culture and history,

indulging in the scrumptious cuisine and, of

course, some Italian-style loving.

DO Jump aboard a vaporetto and take in the

magnificent buildings and elaborate architecture

as it snakes its way along the Grand Canal.

Take a day trip out to one of the nearby islands:

explore the ruins of Torcello or the colourful

houses, lace-making and fishing culture of Burano.

Wander St Mark’s Square at night and prepare

for some seriously dewy-eyed moments as the

serenades of the classical musicians, the ambience

of the twinkling lights and the heady atmosphere

of possibly the world’s most romantic setting

enraptures you in its magic. Finish each day in

style by tucking into an Italian feast at a candlelit

table and wash it all down with a bottle or two of

Prosecco.

SLEEP Bed down in a luxury suite at intimate

boutique hotel, The Charming House. Located in

the tranquil Dorsoduro quarter, each boudoir is

typified by comfort, elegance and contemporary

style – a beautiful base to sup on the delights of

Venice.

DO Lose yourself amidst the hustle and bustle

of the souks, hunt for some super chic finds and

engage in the infamous art of Moroccan haggling.

Take some time out in the peaceful climes of the

Atlas Mountains, drink in the breathtaking scenery

and explore the Berber villages. Hit Jemaa El Fna

at night and witness a carnival for the senses. The

setting of the world’s largest open-air eaterie,

BuDAPESTWrap up on a winter break and experience

the magic of an historic city blanketed in snow.

Or stroll the city streets and languish by the

Danube during the heat of summer. Either way,

the Hungarian capital hits the spot as a romantic

honeymoon destination – and word is catching

on. With a fusion of spectacular architecture both

old and new, mouth-watering cuisine, a thermal

spa culture and a night skyline to send shivers

down the most cynical of spines, Budapest is one

tantalising setting to revel in the first throes of

wedded bliss.

DO Hit the Gellért Spa. Budapest is a hotbed of

hot spa action and the thermal baths located in the

art nouveau Hotel Gellért make an atmospheric

and historic setting to kick back and relish the

healing waters with the locals.

Discover Castle Hill and soak up the sheer

splendour of the buildings – Mátyás Church and

the Buda Royal Palace are highlights. Get your

camera at the ready for breathtaking views across

the Danube at Fishermen’s Bastion. Devour a

veritable feast and entertainment courtesy of

swash-buckling knights, belly dancers and lute

players at Sir Lancelot Medieval Restaurant in

Pest. And no visit to the city is complete without a

stroll along the river at night.

HOMES: BEDROOMS

Revel in your bed head and spend

some serious downtime in your

boudoir. If re-consummating your

recent hitch is high on the list of

to dos, then surround yourselves

with plush, snug interiors and

beds that won’t break your back,

however heavy the activity…

For an animalistic vibe, Marks and

Spencer has it covered. Leave the lace

for your granny and opt for a modern

statement with panache. The bedding

is cleverly au courant and bang on

trend, bringing a sense of the wild

neatly into your sphere of slumber.

www.marksandspencer.com

Fancy a bed that smacks of cool,

comfy living? Iroka’s selection of

modish furniture is one fine way of

guaranteeing bedded bliss. The latest

bed from the Bo Concept Collection

is available in a wide range of fabrics

for some super stylish down time.

www.iroka.com

The House of Fraser range of lovely

linens and bed sets are a sure fire way

to suit any mood from the steamy to

the sublime. The Sandshell collection

smacks of beachside chic whilst

incorporating a little luxe into your

beloved scene of shut-eye.

HOMES: EASTERNIFLUENCES

Take inspiration from the land of the rising sun and

heap some meditative calm into your domestic

domain. A touch of exotic otherworldliness,

combined with elements of Orientalism, makes

for a rich and eclectic abode, both materially and

spiritually. Think bright colours, captivating shapes

and exquisite designs.

A super stylish way to reflect your personality and

aspirations, that Eastern touch will imbue a little Buddhist

gleaned peace into your surrounds, combining inner

outlook with outer façade.

Playing with texture, colour and design, fabric is a highly

effective way to introduce the theme. This Mikado design

by Voyage is sumptuously on-trend, fusing black with flashes

of red across a stunning floral blueprint for a statement yet

elegant edge. www.iroka.co.uk

Dress your tabletops with the latest looks, such as these

block vases and tea lights from Block Design www.

blockdesign.co.uk and lotus-like bowls by Orangewonder

www.orangewonder.com. Alternatively, pay homage to the

Sun gods with this glorious solar bowl by Mistress Metal

www.mistressmetal.com.

Marks and Spencer is also taking design inspiration from the

East. This decadently dark Bali dresser is a classic example

of how to subtly merge furniture into your mix. Soft

furnishings are no exception, with cushions plumping your

posterior with sweeping colour and pretty patterning

www.marksandspencer.com.

Take high tea with Eastern aplomb courtesy of this

intricately designed bone china from the Oriental Garden

Collection www.marksandspencer.com. The only thing left

to do is space out in your own little world…

GOT WED Newlyweds give the lowdown on

their deliciously distinctive weddings

...got wed

Jessica had dreamed of a fairytale wedding

as a little girl – and that is surely what she

got, despite being a victim of the awful

summer of 2008. The classic fairytale

theme was interwoven with flourishes of

nautical inspiration, and worked perfectly

with the unique and utterly romantic

setting of St Michael’s Mount.

The bride spent the evening before her July

wedding on St Michael’s Mount along with her

family and best girlfriend. On waking up in the

Princess Room on the morning of the wedding,

Jessica watched the raging force ten gales and

rough seas from her window.

The weather conditions proved quite an

adventure for Oliver and his family and friends,

who travelled over to the island by Amphi-craft,

with waves crashing over the bow.

A highly personal and atmospheric ceremony

took place before 80 guests who huddled inside

the small chapel as the strong winds buffeted

the granite walls. Oliver’s Aunt Caroline

conducted the service alongside the Mount

Rector, Father John; Oliver’s mother sang

‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘You Raise Me Up’ while

novelist Patrick Gale played the cello and David

Ball accompanied on the organ.

After the ceremony, guests took the

opportunity to wander around the castle. A

selection of canapés, including asparagus with

parma ham and crab on crustini was served

with champagne amidst the stunning setting of

the Chevy Chase Room.

Guests then meandered down the hill to the

National Trust Sail Loft Restaurant where

they tucked into a lunch of salmon with

new potatoes, watercress mayonnaise and

herb salad followed by wedding cake with

raspberries for dessert.

After the speeches were made, the party left

St Michael’s Mount to prepare for an evening

of fine dining. The older guests feasted at

The Coastguard in Mousehole while the

younger guests enjoyed dinner at The Abbey

Restaurant in Penzance. The sumptuous menu

included Etouffe pigeon with foie gras, ragoût

and crépinette, Cornish pig with parmentier,

spinach and dumpling and elder mousse with

macis ice, apple ragout and calvados.

After the wedding, Jessica and Oliver

escaped the British weather, jetting off to the

paradisiacal pleasures Zanzibar and Vamizi, a

small island off northern Mozambique.

Would Jessica change anything about her day?

“Although the weather added to the adventure

and drama of the day, the only real down side

was that everyone had to be evacuated an

hour early or they would have been stranded

until the tide went out at midnight!” After

Wrap It went into receivership shortly after

the wedding, the couple didn’t receive any

of their wedding gifts. “We should have had

our wedding list with John Lewis or Selfridges

– a much safer bet.” As for tips for other

brides, “Wed Magazine was so helpful as we

were planning a wedding from London and it

provided us with a host of options for all our

needs which was invaluable”.

NB. The Church on St Michael’s Mount

is unusual in that it does not belong to

any diocese. Permission to marry there is

required from the office of the Archbishop

of Canterbury, and is only granted to people

who live on the island or who have a close

association with it.

GOT WEDNewlyweds give the lowdown on

their deliciously distinctive weddings...got wedLloyd and Juliette envisioned a stylish yet relaxed sea themed wedding,

which reflected their personalities. Rejecting anything too formal or

formulaic, they were determined that their friends and family would

spend the weekend feeling relaxed and involved in the celebrations.

The majority of the guests joined the couple on the rugged island of Bryher on

the Friday, where they bonded over a delicious barbeque at the Hell Bay Hotel.

Lloyd and his best man spent the night before the wedding at The New Inn on

Tresco, and the pair swam across to Bryher on the morning of the wedding.

That morning, their guests indulged in activities such as golf and boat trips

around the uninhabited islands. After taking a walk around Bryher, Juliette

enjoyed supping champagne and relaxing in her room while she prepared for

the ceremony.

After the intimate ceremony, the party toasted the couple’s union with Bellinis

and canapés on the beach at Rushy Bay. Back at the hotel, the speeches took

place before a wedding breakfast, which included caramelized scallops with

wild mushroom risotto, fillet of John Dory with nicoise salad and a pesto

dressing, vanilla baked cheesecake served with strawberry compote and

Champagne and mixed berry jellies served with lemon sorbet.

The evening revelry saw Small Wonder provide the soundtrack and rev up the

atmosphere.

The next day, the wedding guests either wiled away the hours exploring Tresco

Abbey Gardens or had a relaxing day to themselves before meeting up in the

evening for a meal. After departing Scilly, the newly weds spent two blissful

weeks on Cocoa Island in The Maldives and four days in Dubai.

“It was a weekend we will always remember, and we thoroughly enjoyed

both the planning as well as the actual day,” says Juliette. “It was great fun to

have family and friends all together both on the helicopter and boat to Bryher

– it made us feel so special. And it was truly wonderful to have the hotel to

ourselves all weekend for our celebration.”

GOT WED

Newlyweds give the lowdown on

their deliciously distinctive weddings

...got wedJon and Lauren picked virtually the only sunny

day in July for their intimate wedding in a

secluded and spectacular St Ives’ location.

The Blue Hayes has just five luxurious rooms

and the wedding party of 14 had the hotel

to themselves for the Friday and Saturday,

allowing them to enjoy their party in privacy.

Their arrival on the Friday afternoon was greeted with

a Cornish cream tea served on the terrace followed

by an evening dinner at The Seafood Café in St Ives.

The wedding day dawned sunny and still. Breakfast

was followed by clay pigeon shooting for the gents and

a champagne-fuelled beautifying session for the ladies.

Air’s ‘All I Need’ was the soundtrack as Lauren made

her entrance at the ceremony on her dad’s arm.

After signing the register, the newlyweds soaked up

some sunshine in the hotel gardens as they had some

photographs taken.

A play list of Jon and Lauren’s favourite songs was

played on the hotel’s music system throughout

the day. The mouth-watering menu was chock

full of delectable delights including pan-fried garlic

tiger prawns, chargrilled fillet steak, chicken breast

wrapped in bacon, crème brulee and raspberry

pavlova.

A further six guests joined the celebrations in the

evening. The party enjoyed the jovial and thoroughly

relaxing atmosphere, and feasted on a buffet and

chocolate wedding cake as the sun set.

Jon and Lauren spent their honeymoon chilling out

in the sunshine of Santorini. Lauren advises couples

preparing for their weddings to, “Really savour every

second of your day because it goes so quickly. The

key to our perfect day was the right guests and the

right venue. The whole weekend was just perfect

and I enjoyed every second of it.”

GOT WED Newlyweds give the lowdown on

their deliciously distinctive weddings

...got wedJenna was the first ever subscriber to Wed Magazine and her

wonderful wedding to Luke had the wow factor – and personal

factor – in abundance.

The couple’s guests were greeted by personalised welcome packs from

Jenna and Luke on arrival at their hotels. While the girls enjoyed a pampering

session at Fistral Spa the day before the wedding, the boys hit the waves for

surfing lessons. Come the evening, the guests had some bonding time at the

Porth Veor Manor Hotel where the couple threw a party.

All guests received the wedding schedule on a lanyard, which many of them

wore around their neck all day in true concert style. Jenna arrived at Fistral

Blu with her bridesmaids in a camper van, which doubled as the video diary

room for the evening. The mums and ushers arrived by tuk-tuk while the

guests were ferried from their hotels by a double decker bus.

Jenna’s sister Natalie walked her down the aisle, and the personal

ceremony saw a friend reading a self-penned poem about the couple.

A huge fan of sweets, Jenna named the tables after her favourites: Flumps,

Haribo, Strawbs, Flying Saucers and Jellybeans. Breaking the formula, the

bride and groom made a speech together prior to the wedding breakfast,

followed by a speech from the bridesmaids. The delectable menu

included Thai spiced butternut squash soup, carvery of Cornish sirloin of

beef and Baileys bread and butter pudding. The wedding cake was a tier

of cheese crowned with mice toppers.

The entertainment included a caracature artist and magician followed

by covers band The Invisible Mullets who really revved up the party

atmosphere.

“We were delighted that our guests had such a wonderful time,” says

Jenna. “I would advise other couples to strive to make the day your own,

let it reflect your personalities and don’t be scared if it means having

something a little bit different.”

GOT WED Newlyweds give the lowdown on

their deliciously distinctive weddings

...got wedBrendan grew up close to the shores of Whitsand Bay

– hence the couple were keen to infuse their wedding

with a laidback beach vibe. The endlessly personal and

fun-fuelled celebration saw many family members and

friends getting involved in the preparations, whether

it was baking pies or decorating the marquee. Sian

and her father even grew many of the flowers used in

the arrangements.

On the morning of the August wedding, Brendan hit the

surf with his ushers while Sian prepared for the ceremony.

The beautiful setting of Rame Church was bathed in glorious

sunshine as the ceremony began, while a local male voice

choir made an atmospheric soundtrack. On emerging from

the church as Mr and Mrs, the couple were greeted with a

surfboard guard of honour.

Presented rather appropriately in a rowing boat, the

champagne was promptly swigged before the party made their

way to Kingsand Community Centre where Brendan and a

team of friends had decorated a marquee the previous day.

The buffet comprised a feast of hearty delights, including

an array of hot pies and salad courtesy of the couple’s

friends. Enhancing the beach theme, the driftwood was

enscribed with guests’ names in calligraphy by one of Sian’s

bridesmaids and placed on each table.

Friends and family were involved right down to the

entertainment, as Brendan and Sian’s fathers provided some

folk tunes to warm up for the evening festivities. Local funk

band, Freshly Squeezed Life, lent a groovy gusto to the party

and the dance floor well and truly rocked into the night.

Sian trashed her dress in style the following morning by

running into the water off Whitsand Bay before throwing

a barbeque for their guests. The couple shortly left for a

dream honeymoon in Brazil.

"I WOUld lIKE TO WEAR WEddING BOOTs INsTEAd OF shOEs. CAN YOU RECOMMENd A GOOd RETAIlER IN CORNWAll?"

Illustration Cally Gibsonwww.callygibson.co.uk

126wed Issue 08 2009

wedmagazine.co.uk

Q: I am toying with the idea of not

holding a flower bouquet as I walk

down the aisle, but I still want to carry

something. Do you have any ideas?

A: If you like the idea of flowers but not a

bouquet you could go for a beautiful corsage.

Alternatively, you could try a crystal bouquet

or maybe even a candle in a storm lantern,

which is a magical look for winter weddings.

Q: We are having a marquee wedding

reception in a field and I want to make

the entrance really obvious. What do you

suggest?

A: Speak to your marquee company as

many of them will offer you a special carpet,

available in various colours, to create a

walkway. This can then be decorated with

fairy lights, lanterns or even topiary, which

makes a striking statement. Give Temporary

Topiary a call on 01872 571542

www.temporarytopiary.co.uk and see what

they can do for you.

Q: I’ve found the perfect venue for our

wedding reception, but I really don’t like

the chairs. Can I ask the hotel to hire in

different ones?

A: If the chairs really don’t float your boat

then you have two choices: either hire in

new chairs or hire in chair covers. Opting

for covers means you can tie them in

with your colour scheme: prepare to be

faced with a bewildering range of different

coloured covers, sashes and accessories

from Southwest Chair Covers

www.southwestchaircovers.co.uk. But be

warned: it will be you, not the hotel, who

will have to foot the bill for both these

options.

Q: I sent out save the date cards a few

months back to people I planned to invite

to the whole wedding and those I planned

to invite to the evening only. The cards

were all the same and now some of the

people I planned to only invite in the

evening think they are coming all day.

What should I do?

A: Woops! Usually when you receive a save

the date card it does mean that you need to

save the date for the whole wedding and, if

you can afford to, I would suggest that you

invite these guests all day. However, if your

budget simply won’t stretch, then stick to

your original plan and explain the mix up to

them as soon as possible.

Q: My fiancé and I are planning to have a

very small and intimate wedding with just

the required witnesses present. Will the

registrar provide them or can we drag in

a couple of people from the street?

A: The registrar is not allowed to provide

you with witnesses so you will have to find

them yourselves. Just bear in mind that if you

can’t find any you won’t be allowed to get

married! Good luck.

Q: As I am getting married in the

winter and will be going for a really

wintery theme, I would like to wear

wedding boots instead of shoes. Can you

recommend a good retailer in Cornwall?

A: I suggest you try Ongaro Moda in Truro.

The shop stocks a fantastic range of shoes

and accessories for all occasions as well

as wedding boots and fabulous shoes. Call

01872 263743 or check out
