This issue marks the fifth anniversary of Wed Magazine. Five whole years

have danced by since Brendan (my partner and soon to be husband!) came

up with our idea for a new concept in regional wedding publishing: a big, bold

magazine that would reflect the modern wedding – in all its pretty, playful

and deliciously creative glory. And so Wed Magazine was born.

It’s been quite a ride. The last five years have taken us to some of the most jaw-

droppingly beautiful places; we’ve met lots of downright inspirational – and beyond

lovely – people; and we’ve revelled in the knowledge that we get to eat, sleep and

breathe a creative mission we adore here in our beloved Cornwall.

There’s no denying that it’s been a lot of hard work. People are always astonished

when they find out how tiny our little Wed team is. But we’ve loved it. And, as I sit

here, five years after I sat down to write my first editor’s letter, my overwhelming

feeling is one of gratitude to our loyal readers, advertisers and all those who have

helped to make Wed happen – and pride in our wonderful wedding industry here in

Cornwall. It’s an awesome county to get married – so awesome, we’ll be tying the

knot here this year!

To mark our anniversary, we’ve compiled some of the prettiest wedding inspiration

and weak-at-the-knees wonderful love stories yet.

Prepare to swoon over fairytale visions of frothy tulle and decadent jewels in our

bridal fashion special ‘Happily Ever After’, which was captured in the serene setting of

St Mawes. Then it’s over to the flamboyant climes of Upton House in Fowey; ‘Sweet

Somethings’ paints fantasy visions of opulent bridal gowns, glamorous cocktail frocks,

china, cakes and all things pretty.

While we’re on the subject of moreish mouthfuls of yumminess, Cornwall is now

home to some of the country’s coolest tea party experiences. We serve up the most

delectable settings for a top-notch tea – and an ever-so ladylike hen party – in ‘Grace

and Favour’.

These silken pages also take you to some sublime secluded spots to tie the knot, from

a tipi glade to an eco retreat. Coo over our covetable headwear and learn how to look

like a goddess in your wedding photos. And I can certainly vouch that the guest list has

been one of the most stressful jobs of my wedding planning journey to date. ‘Guest

Stressed?’ is full of handy advice to help you navigate those potentially choppy waters!

So happy birthday to us, and happy wedding planning to you!

Rebecca

St Agnes on the north coast, The Driftwood Spars offers

a heady fusion of stirring charm and endless coastline on

With three cosy bars and incredible coastal walks adding to the

venue’s magic, The Driftwood Spars promises a beautiful day

WHAT’S YOUR AISLE STYLE?Your wedding dress should be many things but, most importantly, it should be you. Sashay down the aisle in a head-turning gown that typifies your personal stylewords Hannah May

If you’re more Iron Lady than Lady Gaga, don’t

fret that modern fashion won’t fit. Whatever

you’re personal style, there is a frock out there

to flaunt. From screen siren to contemporary

couture, bridal fashion today is as much about

wearing your own individual style on your sleeve

as your heart.

Today’s designers won’t disappoint. As bespoke

breathes new life into bygone fashions and forms new

trends – whether your whimsies lie with glamour,

demure or statement styling – it’s time to don your

personality with pride.

This year, fashion is moving forward. From replication

to fusion, it’s all about mixing it up and engaging with

the personalisation process via the details. Ditching

head-to-toe coordination and the entire echoing of

an era, it’s a subtler movement whereby styles and

inspirations are mashed together for a truly unique look.

Picture a vintage cloche cap headpiece combined with

a ‘60s lace shift, and towering bright stilettos teamed

with colourful chunky jewellery and a dainty up ‘do.

Alternatively, opt for an ultra feminine basque with sleek

satin trousers androgynously accessorised with slicked

back hair and a pair of Mary Janes or brogues.

Forget about impressing others. It’s all about who you

are and dressing to suit yourself in a wave of stylised self

expression that make modern brides a fashion force to

be reckoned with.

WHAT’S YOUR AISLE STYLE?

Style Personality: Classic

Inspired by the likes of Garbo, Monroe and Bardot, classic brides are

expressing their romantic roots in a number of stunning ways.

From fairytale fashion to tailored cover-up, modestly borrowing from bygone

trends or opting for modern couture means that every angle is covered for a

cool, coordinated ensemble.

Think strapless gowns worn with a glossy mane, long white gloves and

matching diamond jewellery or luscious curly locks with panels of lace or

starched satin for a coveted, classy look oozing old school sex appeal and sultry

smokiness. Floral appliqués, chiffon, veils and anything Victorian such as sheer

necklines, corsetry and transparent trains are modern versions of a timeless

and achingly romantic aesthetic.

Style Personality: Casual

With your instinctive flair and relaxed approach to fashion, a range of trends

find more subdued form in your wardrobe.

More endearingly dishevelled than break-the-mould daring, you’ll dress

up for an occasion but otherwise remain cool and casual in your everyday

appearance.

Wedding-wise, there’s a world of simpler styles to suit. From clean lines and

structured shifts to upping the ante with backless boho, draping Grecian or

structured mermaid, there’s a style that will capture a sweet or sensual side

while maintaining a contemporary edge.

Flirt with fabrics like tulle or lace for a softer look, or stretch satin and silk for a

sexier, curve-hugging feel. Tousled hair with flowers and strappy heels or ballet

pumps smacks of understated allure, while whimsical features such as frothy

frocks, keyhole necklines and sleeves add another eye-catching dimension.

Fashion characteristics: Generally favours laidback, low maintenance styles. Either a natural or informal dresser not fussed by the details, remaining understated and self-assured.Style icons: Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry

underskirts and oversized corsage for an oh-so cute and feminine look.

Infuse ‘20s flapper, countryside gentry, ‘60s vamp or ‘80s pop art into your

outfit and don a hat, peacock feather, skullcap headpiece or bright fishnets as

your style centrepiece.

feature | WEDDING DRESSES | WHAT’S YOUR AISLE STYLE?

Style Personality: Experimental

Whether it’s ‘anything goes’ or a strong clash of influences, an experimental

approach to fashion often sees statement-making moves that wow, shock or

beguile all in your wake.

With no particular leaning towards a single trend, you’ve tried and tested the

entire range, often wearing several together for maximum impact.

The runways are awash with white – you’ll go for black. Or you’ll base

your wedding around a clean aesthetic whereby everything is as white and

transparent as can be, down to the reception venue and grooms wear; it’s

usually either a case of extremism or antithesis.

Current trends to consider include multi-dimensional puffball skirts and

sleeves, giant bows and multi-tiered or mini skirts with several shocks of

clashing colour and an array of head-to-toe frills. Go for volume, loud prints

and sweeping lengths with massive trails teamed with feather, fur, metal and

plastic accessories.

From impossibly intricate to show-stopping statuesque, you’ll wear it with

pride in the knowledge that others will be clamouring to mirror your every

minutia tomorrow.

Fashion characteristics: Fun and flirty, attention-stealing style. Will try everything and mix or change styles to suit mood or to contradict occasion.Style icons: Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Rihanna

feature | RINGS

A DESIGN FOR LIFESometimes less is more. Fall in love with a chic, sleek and perfectly plain symbol of your unionwords Hannah May

Perhaps your taste is clean, simple and understated. Or maybe

your rock of an engagement ring leaves little room for a

contender in the sparkle stakes. The sleek visual statement of

a plain wedding ring is a worthy choice either way.

The minimalist movement is making waves in wedding ring design.

Chic, cool and contemporary, a plain wedding band allows the beauty

of the metal to shine through, while serving as a pure and simple

expression of commitment. Furthermore, it’s usually an economical

option for savvy spenders, in that you are paying for the weight of the

metal alone, rather than any decadent stones.

If your budget will stretch, choose a luxurious and durable metal such

as platinum or its more affordable cousin palladium. Then pick a size

to suit, from a wide statement band to a slim feminine design.

Those wishing to infuse some panache might mix the metals in a

two-tone band, go for a grooved texture or experiment with shape,

from a smooth domed design to a flat contemporary cut. You may

leave the subtle embellishments to the inside of the ring, where a

personalised inscription – be it Celtic, poetic, the wedding date,

initials or a sweet sentiment of your choice – can be woven into the

design for a beautiful and enduring reminder of your love.

A GUIDE TO HEADWEAR

face shape matters

Considering your face shape and the hairstyle that will suit you best is

the first step to finding the perfect adornment for your hair.

Oval – Perfectly in proportion, oval faces are egg-shaped with forehead and jaw

the same width.

Choose: Almost any style will look good on this face shape.

Avoid: Heavy fringes and styles that push a lot of hair onto your face.

Round – Circular faces without height on top or a protruding chin.

Choose: Side partings and styles with height at the crown. Go for an up-do or

half-up.

Avoid: Styles with fullness at the sides and fringes in general.

Oblong – High foreheads and long chins: oblong faces are longer than they are

wide.

Choose: Wear your hair down, with fullness at the sides – waves and curls look

great.

Avoid: Adding any extra height on top and centre partings.

Heart – Although wide at the forehead, heart-shaped faces narrow to a point at

the jawline.

Choose: Hair down or half-up, with a side parting or gentle fringe.

Avoid: Height at the crown and severe up-dos.

Square – Angular-looking faces with both a strong forehead and jawline.

Choose: Romantic waves and curls – wear your hair down or half-up. Consider a

soft fringe.

Avoid: Poker straight hair and severe up-dos.

tiaras

Nothing says princess like a tiara – and if you can’t dress like a princess on your

wedding day, when can you? Tiaras are synonymous with a timeless bridal look

and therefore suit classic rather than contemporary gowns.

If you’ve set your sights on a tiara, you’ve got a wide choice on the hair front, as

tiaras look equally effective with up-dos, hair down and also half-up styles. You

do however need to make sure your hair is shiny and in really good condition to

carry one off properly – tiaras don’t suit the disheveled look.

Brides with round or square-shaped faces should choose a tiara that has a peak

– or at least some height to it – to make their faces appear longer. In contrast,

brides with long faces should choose a tiara with very little height that cross the

head from one side to the other at an even height – so as not to add additional

length. Heart-shaped faces will also suit low tiaras – peaks will just make you

look diamond-shaped. Anyone lucky enough to have an oval-shaped face will

suit any shape and size of tiara – within reason of course!

flower crowns and garlands

If you’ve chosen a long, flowing bohemian-inspired wedding dress, then consider

adorning your gown with a glorious crown of flowers for a romantic and

whimsical look. Flower crowns are big news this year: ethereal models floated

down designer’s catwalks with elaborate florals encircling their manes at many

of the spring/summer shows. In terms of flowers, a mixture of wild blooms

looks wonderful, while crowns made with dried flowers makes a great project

for any budding DIY brides. Flower crowns look best with long hair, worn wavy

and loose – a relaxed look that suits all face shapes.

fascinators

Brides favouring a contemporary look may well opt to don a fascinator. Available in a

seemingly endless array of designs and materials, many designers now offer a bespoke

design service whereby they can craft a unique piece to perfectly compliment your face

shape, hairstyle and gown.

Feathers, sinamay, grosgrain, Swarovski crystals, silk, satin and tulle are popular materials

for fascinators, which are held in place by a band, clip or comb, and usually worn to one

side of the head.

Fascinators can be small and sweet – think a single feather scattered with some Swarovski

crystals – or they can be a bold statement – think giant retro bows and modern mini hats.

In terms of face shape and hairstyle, there is a fascinator out there for every bride. If you

have an oblong face, avoid styles that add extra height, whereas brides with round faces

should embrace the more flamboyant styles. Brides with oval-shaped faces might consider

wearing their hair up and making a bold statement with a big and beautiful fascinator. If

you’re unsure, ask your hair stylist to guide you in terms of size and shape.

forehead bands

We’ve got the lovely Kim Kardashian to thank for the recent popularity of bridal forehead

bands, although I prefer to trace the look back to Aladdin’s fabulous Princess Jasmine.

Bridal forehead bands make a striking and stylish statement. Designed to lie just below the

hairline, they suit hair up, down and half-up, and wavy styles suit the enigmatic princess

look best. As they are actually worn just on the face, rather than in the hair, all face shapes

can carry them off – although they should be avoided if you have a fringe, as your forehead

is covered.

Forehead bands work best with fairly simple gowns and minimal jewellery. From diamanté

(or real diamonds if you have the budget!), through to complex floral patterns in metal

accentuated by crystals, forehead bands should be chosen to pick up on the detail in your

dress.

flapper band

If you’ve chosen a 1920s’ inspired wedding dress – and top style points if you have – then

you should consider teaming it with a super-chic flapper band. Flapper bands are worn

across the forehead and fasten at the back, usually embellished with a combination of

feathers and jewels at one side and occasionally at the front. These look stunning with the

hairstyle that screams the roaring ‘20s: the bob, either worn straight or with finger waves.

This style compliments all face shapes, although brides with round faces need to make

sure their hair is past chin length.

headbands

Wearing a real statement necklace or a dress that needs no additional wow-factor? Then

consider a chic, understated headband – great for brides who like to keep their headwear

simple. Different from tiaras in that they sit flat against the head, headbands suit all face

shapes and are perfect to dress most hairstyles, including short hair.

combs

If you’re opting for an elegant up-do or chic side chignon – a great choice for oval and round

face shapes – then consider adorning your hair with a classic comb, perfect for adding some

sparkle and charm, without taking too much attention away from the do itself.

HEN TEA PARTIES

Tea. There’s something about the very word that

soothes the soul, warms the cockles and makes

you go ‘ahhh…’ inside. Stick the word ‘party’ on

the end of it and there you have it – a feminine

fantasy. The delectable cakes, the exquisite

fancies, the golden tea served in fine bone china

cups – it’s small wonder the tea party has taken

off in the way that it has. And the trend shows no

sign of fading.

Indeed, some of the most glamorous tea party

experiences in the country have popped up right here

in Cornwall. Those plush London hotels might throw

tea parties with the thrilling buzz of the city on the

doorstep, but here in Cornwall, we have the murmur of

the tide, the call of the seabirds and a room with a most

enchanting view.

If you relish the thought of fabulous frocks and cakes

(and shudder at the thought of plastic phalluses and

L-plates), a glamorous tea party is the perfect way to

mark your hen celebrations. Beyond the loveliness and

sheer indulgence of it all, a tea party is a fabulous way

of spending quality time with your nearest and dearest,

and celebrating your impending nuptials with guests of

all ages, from your young goddaughter to your granny.

Just imagine the finger sandwiches, fresh scones and

pretty-as-a-picture cakes. You might sprinkle in a little

extra amusement, whether it’s a hairstyling and beauty

tutorial, a cupcake decorating session or vintage dress-

up fun.

We’ve delighted over the cakes, swooned over the

settings and sampled a lot of tea from dainty cups.

These darling destinations have the tea party down to

a fine art.

For tea by the sea…THE BAY RESTAURANTTucked away above the rooftops of Penzance, The Bay

Restaurant offers breathtakingly beautiful views across

Mount’s Bay. The light, airy interiors come with floor-

to-ceiling windows overlooking the Mediterranean style

garden, a private pool and, beyond, the majestic vista

with St Michael’s Mount at its heart. It is a divine setting

for a spot of tea and some indulgent time-out with your

closest friends.

Having decided that West Cornwall deserved its own

full afternoon tea experience, the team at The Bay

Restaurant has devised the most delectable of parties

– perfect for hens envisioning a ladylike celebration

against an enchanting backdrop.

Prepare for a delightful sensory experience from the

moment you walk into the room. A chilled glass of

delicious Cornish wine on arrival sets the celebratory

tone; you’ll then be met by the visual delights of dainty

sandwiches and savouries, mouth-watering cakes

and scones, all served on the prettiest of china. Eat,

drink and be merry with your friends as you overlook

the ocean – savouring the ultimate in chic, seaside

celebrations.

feature | CHILDREN AT WEDDINGS

If you’re inviting some little cherubs to your wedding, it’s time to get kiddie-savvy. wed serves up some solutions to minimise the fidget factor words Hannah May

According to H.W. Longfellow: ‘Between the dark

and the daylight, when the night is beginning to

lower, comes a pause in the day’s occupations,

that is known as the Children’s Hour.’ A magical

moment of fun and games, or even a little twilight

trickery as their imagination creatively channels

and they ready themselves for bed – right? Or does

a prolonged period of tantrums as they tearfully

refuse to surrender their day sound more familiar?

At weddings, the Children’s Hour effectively lasts all day,

which increases the risk of disruption and can prove a

testing time for all.

So think carefully about whether you’re going to

invite children to your wedding at an early stage of

the planning. On one hand, a wedding full of adorable,

butter-wouldn’t-melt children lends a unique family

atmosphere to a wedding; on the other hand, children

come with the unpredictability factor, with the potential

to cry through the vows and run riot around your

reception.

“Although children add something special to a wedding,

you do need to limit numbers as too many children

running around can become chaotic. Most couples limit

it to their own children, nieces and nephews,” advises

wedding planner Ali Berry (aliberryweddings.co.uk).

Don’t invite more than you’d like out of obligation. “Most

parents welcome a child-free day/night to let their hair

down so don’t feel bad for not inviting their children

along,” says Ali. “Let parents know early enough that

their children aren’t invited so that they have enough

time to arrange childcare and attend your wedding.”

CHILDREN AT WEDDINGS

If you cannot envision your wedding

without the presence of some special

little people, then some careful planning

will minimise the hype and exert calm

control over even the most ‘energetic’ of

children.

the ceremonyThe golden rule for ceremonies is simple.

“Make sure that you tell parents to take their

children out of the church if they start cry-

ing. You’d be surprised at how many don’t do

this until it gets to breaking point,” says Ali.

Logistics should also be considered: “Seat

families with children at the back of the

church so they have an easy exit if the

children get restless.” Another boredom-

averting trick will lessen disturbance and

personalise the ceremony in the process:

“Involve the kids in the ceremony. Let them

sing a song while you sign the registry. This

will keep them on best behaviour and give

them something to look forward to,” com-

ments Ali.

that’s entertainment!During the reception, adults can often

eschew their parenting responsibilities in

favour of partying, leaving kids to lawlessly

run amok. Wedding planner Claire Hooper’s

(weddingsbyclaire.co.uk) solution is a savvy

starting point: “Children should be seated

with their parents and be provided with

entertainment during the meal. A fabulous

and very popular idea with my brides is Event

Smiles – you can order a box of goodies

based on the child’s age, which helps pass the

time during the wedding breakfast.”

A restless child during the meal can cause a

commotion. “Set aside an area of play in the

room where the meal is taking place. Make

sure there are books and toys to keep

children occupied or hire a children’s

entertainer as they provide an excellent

distraction at a reasonable cost,” says Claire.

Ali agrees: “Children are well behaved and

happy when they are entertained so make

sure you have lots for them to do at the

reception, such as a bouncy castle, colouring

in, party entertainer, puppet show, kids area

with DVD and consoles to keep them busy

in the evening and lots of outdoor games like

hula hoops, skittles, croquet. Set up some

easels and let them paint a picture of your

wedding day, or a dress up box will keep

them wildly entertained for hours.”

Don’t forget necessary provisions for the day:

“Remember that children will need extra

facilities like high chairs, travel cots and baby

changing facilities,” advises Ali.

the food factorMoving onto the meal, Sarah Wright and Lucy

Turner from The Round Kitchen (theround-

kitchen.com) work with parents to deliver

a child-friendly menu, such as Cornish pork

sausages and mash or simple roast chicken

with roast potatoes and vegetables with gravy

on the side. “Simple milk chocolate mousses

or cupcakes are always a winner for puds,”

Lucy says. “Obviously we can do small por-

tions of the wedding breakfast if the children

are more adventurous.”

“What we tell couples who are inviting

children is, if the children are happy –every-

one is happy. We also recommend that the

children’s meals are served with the adults’

starters, so that they don’t have to wait and

they take longer to eat.”

Don’t overlook snacks and nibbles. “We

are now offering child-friendly canapés like

sausages on sticks and cheese and pineapple,

along with some simple crisps and biscuits,”

says Lucy. “Even though you think parents

would bring nibbles for their kids, they don’t.

They definitely get worse behaved when

hungry!”

Jamie Beetham from Beetham Food

(beethamfood.com) recommends that

couples opt for smaller sized versions of the

main meal. “We avoid burgers and chicken

nuggets and chips as children really enjoy our

food. The kids always pick at their parents’

plates, often leaving their own meal.”

Remember your own tastes. “The bride and

groom try to please everybody else and

forget themselves – if they want seafood

paella, the children can eat only the bits they

like!” Jamie adds, “It’s easier for parents to

bring their own food for babies and small

children, who should be seated alongside

them and looked after separately.”

the evening receptionIt’s important to keep an eye on the children

as day turns into night. “It’s a long day so

getting the kids to a ‘quieter’ area by 8 or

9pm is a really good idea. Have a sitter and

get all the kids to watch a movie in a separate

pop-up gazebo or hotel bedroom,” Ali

suggests.

As the alcohol flows in greater quantity,

it’s all-to-easy to loosen the reins. “Parents

should always be vigilant concerning alcohol

being left around, especially with young

teenagers,” warns Lucy. The last thing you

want is for a child to come to harm, so

vigilance is key. “Children get burnt by

cigarettes because they are at the height

of someone’s arm length so encourage a

restricted smoking area,” says Ali.

You can’t plan it all, but do your best. As Ali

says: “Kids will do the unexpected. Go with

the flow and don’t sweat the small stuff!”Kirstin Prisk

From upstaging the bride at the altar to taking pride of place at the top table, pets are becoming a common feature of weddings. Avoid the pitfalls and lap up some puppy love with these top tipswords Hannah May

ANIMAL ATTRACTION

The best man may not be the real best friend. If it’s a case of one man and

his dog – or rather, an entire congregation and a plethora of pets at your

wedding – then some serious thinking needs to be done.

Pets at weddings are another part of the growing personalisation trend and are gain-

ing popularity as all sorts of animals are, quite literally, thrown into the mix. From

ring-bearing pooches to snake charmer entertainers, they’re a great way to splice

some idiosyncrasy and memorable moments into your day.

Bride-to-be and blogger Jess Billington from treatalady.com can’t imagine getting

married without her two dogs being present: “We consider our dogs to be part of

our family and our closest friends. Not having them with us on the most important

day of our lives wasn’t a consideration and was actually a major factor in choosing

our venue,” she comments. “A photograph with them on our wedding day is one of

the things I know I will treasure most afterwards.”

As with everything, your imagination can really run riot (within reason) and the trend

can take any form. From zoo and nature reserve weddings to a photo pit stop at your

favourite aquarium or nearby park – whether it’s a calculated move or a little hap-

penstance that invites animals into your day, there are a few key points to consider.

“If you want your pet involved in your wedding, or a guest wants to bring a pet, it is

important to check with the church, venue and suppliers that it is allowed and they

are happy to work with pets,” advises wedding planner Claire Hooper of Weddings

by Claire (weddingsbyclaire.co.uk).

The most common pet du jour are dogs, though there are common considerations

with animals that can generally be applied to all. “Always keep your dog on a lead,” ad-

vises wedding planner Ali Berry (aliberryweddings.co.uk). There might be guests who

are allergic or scared of dogs so don’t assume that everyone will love them to bits”.

Got some reliable, animal-loving guests? Get them involved in some pet sitting. “Give

two people the responsibility of being in charge of your dog so that they can take

turns looking after them and organise ‘potty breaks’, but also have a chance to enjoy

the day and have a break,” says Ali. As we all know, there’s nothing worse than a

disgruntled pooper-scooper. Speaking of which: “Remember disposable bags and to

take the dog for a ‘potty’ break before the ceremony to avoid unsightly surprises

down the aisle!” No bride would wish to be upstaged by a depositing dog, however

sweet it looks in its mini tailcoats.

Don’t forget the basics in minimising the likelihood of a discontented dog: “It might

seem obvious, but have a bowl of water at the church as well as lots of treats, and

have an easy exit at the church in case they start barking,” comments Ali.

Sarah Lauren

Sarah Wright and Lucy Turner of The Round Kitchen (roundkitchen.com) recall their

own dog-friendly day: “We had our dog at our wedding and, to protect her from the

crowds, we put our dog cage behind our table in the marquee. Then she was walked

by anyone who wished – the kids loved her.”

At the reception, allow your dog some downtime while your guests enjoy the sit-

down meal: “Do not have your dog wandering around when you are sitting down to

eat. Have a dog cage and a separate room in the hotel or a pop-up gazebo outside

the marquee where your dog can rest,” says Ali. Be cautious and remember that your

dog may become overwhelmed by the change in environment. “You should not leave

your dog unattended and roaming free in a hotel room,” says Ali. “This is a strange

and new place for them and they are likely to have an ‘accident’ or chew things which

they shouldn’t. Always keep them in a cage and give them water, a bone or toy for

entertainment. Even better, hire a pet-sitter.”

“A good idea is to organise for someone to take them home before the evening kicks

off,” says Lucy, which will lift a certain weight off your shoulders and allow your furry

friend to remain a friendly and treasured highlight of your day, as opposed to a force

more monstrous than the worst Bridezilla. They may be best mates with you, but

they haven’t met all your guests in one large group before and can be just as tetchy as

children and are (probably!) more likely to bite. “Being carried, stroked excessively,

photographed and chased by kids will be quite stressful for your dog so only involve

them in the wedding if they are capable of handling it,” Ali advises. “And if your dog

isn’t neutered and is frisky, please leave him at a kennel!”

Beyond the warnings, animals make a super cute addition to your day that can be

dressed up for a classically kitsch and adorable look. “Let your dog walk down the

aisle in front of you with a sign saying ‘mutt of honour’”, suggests Ali. Might even put

the bridesmaids to shame…Sarah Lauren

GUEST STRESSED?

LOOSE LIPS, GUEST BLIPSAs excited as you may be – and you have every right to be whipped up into a

romantic frenzy – be a little careful when talking about your upcoming nuptials to

people who are not close friends or family. It’s only natural to want to share the thrill

and anticipation of the event, especially when it is a relatively recent engagement, but

it’s easy to get carried away. Like a gushing drunk, a couple freshly intoxicated with

the promise of lifelong love may be inclined to want everybody to share in their joy.

However, when the real planning begins, the budget will help determine numbers and

it’s not always possible to invite everybody. It’s much easier to tell acquaintances or

colleagues that it will be a ‘small wedding’ early on, rather than doing it after you’ve

spent weeks discussing venues, menus and everything else. Awkward.

KNOW YOUR LIMITS It’s not only budget that can determine guest numbers – the venue is an important

consideration as well. A large venue could be expensive which means you may

need to cut the number of guests – which in turn means that you wouldn’t need a

large venue. On the other hand, a small venue will no doubt lead to some agonising

decisions about who to invite. To simplify this process, you may find it helpful to write

a list of people you can’t do without, and then combine your list with that of your

partner. This will be your starting point and should help to define the scale of your

wedding. Brave couples may wish to write their ‘can’t do without’ list together, but it

may be better to avoid heated debate at this early stage…

THE VETO LIST If you do find yourselves embroiled in lengthy discussions about potential guests, you

may want to consider a veto list, but perhaps only as a last resort. Don’t expect it to

work unless you have an equal, limited number of vetos, which should not conflict

with your partner’s ‘can’t do without’ list. As long as you or your partner do not

hold grudges, you might find this technique useful for dealing with the prospect of

awkward guests, such as: heavy drinkers, hot heads and ex-partners.

The question of whether to invite children may come up at this stage and it is

usually a tricky one. We have all been to weddings during which the vows have been

inaudible due to a wailing child or two. But is it possible to find a way around this?

Some wedding venues and churches have a quiet room especially for the purpose of

pacifying disgruntled toddlers. If, after careful consideration, you are certain that your

wedding should be a child-free zone, be aware that this may be a deal-breaker for

some guests, most obviously new mums. You can make life a little easier for guests

travelling with children by looking into local babysitting services and considering

organising a small reception another day to which the children will be invited

(afternoons teas and hired ice cream carts are usually great for this type of event, if

the weather allows).

PLUS ONE = MORE LIKE PLUS FIFTY There really is no such thing as an average cost per head because it depends on your

funds and the level of formality of the day but, as a rough guide, a three-course meal

with a champagne-style reception might set you back £50 per person, whereas a

buffet may be closer to £15. It’s worth remembering that if you are working to a

budget your guest numbers will drastically affect your on-plate plans. If you have your

hearts set on a particular dish for your wedding breakfast, you may need to think

twice before you extend any plus-ones to your single friends (after all, it’s sometimes

difficult enough extending plus-ones to married friends). It’s important to cost

your plate and complimentary drinks before you finalise the guest list as this could

drastically affect your numbers.

PUSHY PARENTS?Ultimately, it’s your party. The who, what, where and how should be decided by

you and not by your parents, so don’t allow yourselves to be mother hen-pecked.

However, there are two things to be considered when it comes to parental input.

The first is financial support. If your parents have offered to contribute to your

special day, a small gesture, such as a few invitations to extend to their friends, is a

fair exchange for many. Second, even if your parents are not putting money towards

Agreeing on the guest list can be one of the most stressful elements of the wedding preparations. Caught between financial limitations and the fear of causing offence, this little (or long) list can get the better of otherwise organised couples. But help is at hand. Here are wed’s top tips for a less-stressed guest list…words Charity Wilson

the event, this ceremony is still a rite of passage and, as

such, you have probably anticipated that your parents

will want to share this moment with old friends. It can

be difficult to please everybody, but some couples have

found that the fairest thing all round is to divide the

guest list between the couple and both sets of parents

(the couple taking the lion’s share, the parents taking a

token number).

SHORT-STAY GUESTSWe often think of guests in two categories: all-day

guests and evening guests. But you don’t need to follow

that format: you can arrange your day to suit you and

those you have invited. As a guest, the most anticipated

part of the wedding is not the food; it is often the

ceremony itself or the speeches. In a traditional format,

the evening guest would miss both, but this need not

be the case. It is worth considering your options. For

example, you may be inclined to invite all guests to the

ceremony, with some following on to the reception

and others returning for the evening do; or you might

want to save the speeches until the evening guests

have arrived (alcohol consumption permitting) so that

everyone can enjoy these personal tributes.

When you are deciding who to invite for only a portion

of the day, you should take into account how far they

will need to travel and whether they are coming alone.

It can be a little nerve-wracking arriving solo to a party

that’s already in full swing, especially if you’ve just driven

half way across the country. As a general rule here:

there is no rule. Look at the day from the perspective of

different guests and tailor it as you wish.TOp TIpS:DON’T GUSH IN A RUSH! WEDDING TALK CAN GIVE PEOPLE THE IMPRESSION THAT THEY’RE INVITED!

ROCK THE BLUES

From baby to midnight, blue has never been so hot – so pick your shade and be the

best ‘something blue’ your bride-to-be could ask for. An inky shade of midnight blue

makes for a sophisticated and suitably suave alternative to a black or slate grey suit,

while a smooth, cool tone sets the mood for a relaxed beachside bash. Alternatively,

rock the trend with accents such as an electric blue tie, a cornflower cravat or, for a

quirky retro twist, a polka dot pocket handkerchief – and look every inch a man à la

mode.

SARTORIALLY SPEAKING

Thanks to Mr Kate Moss, aka Jamie Hince, the double-

breasted suit is making a comeback in wedding world. Since

the rocker donned his pale grey Yves Saint Lauren number

at his nuptials last summer, the double-breasted design has

been making waves once again in sartorial circles. It’s a

flattering look rich in class and sophistication for a formal

wedding; for a more laidback affair, dress it down with some

cool accessories – think playful prints and colourful brogues.

feature | GROOMS GUIDE | Q&A

What are the rules for choosing my wedding shoes and which colour goes with which suit? When you ask a woman what she looks at first in a

man, the answer is usually his shoes. Shabby shoes

often equals a shabby man. For your wedding day, you

should wear contemporary and comfortable shoes.

The key features you should be looking for are the

style of shoe, the quality of the leather, the heel (you

might want a few extra inches) and the sole and lining.

As for colour, black suits should always be worn with

black shoes, and, if you are wearing a tuxedo, then

why not invest in a stylish pair of patent black shoes?

These can be worn again after the wedding with

jeans and a black blazer on a night out. As far as I’m

concerned, navy suits should only be worn with a rich

brown shoe, while grey suits can work either way.

Wear your chosen shoes at home during the week

leading up to the wedding to soften the leather and

avoid blisters and uncomfortable feet on the big day.

I’m having a real dilemma choosing my best man. What qualities should I be looking for? This is a tough decision for many grooms. The best

man is not only there for the groom, but also to help

with the smooth running of the wedding day. He

should deal with any issues that might add stress to

the bride or groom, from transportation dramas to

unexpected guests (e.g. crazy ex-girlfriends). The best

man should be a strong character who is good with

people and highly resourceful. From the stag party

to the moment the bride and groom leave for their

honeymoon, the best man should assist and support

the groom every step of the way.

Sometimes your natural choice for the best man

might not be the best choice for the overall wedding,

and you may have to take off your best friend

blinkers and choose the right man for the job. If

your best friend manages to systematically annoy

your other friends and the bridal party, he may be

better suited to the role of usher rather than best

man. Plan everything with the best man and have

regular meetings at the pub (any excuse) to review

progression. A word of warning: I have a friend who

chose the wrong best man and ended up spending his

stag weekend in a Bulgarian prison – so consider your

choice carefully.

I don’t want the same old stag party. What are my options for something a bit cooler? Lads’ weekend in Newquay not your bag? There’s a

multitude of options open to the modern stag party.

‘Bar On Wheels’ is a fantastic concept where 16 guys

get on what can only be described as a bus where the

passengers pedal. Available in cities such as Berlin,

Amsterdam and Munich, the bar comes complete

with plenty of beer and a tour guide who takes you

around the city hot spots – so you get to combine

sightseeing with a few drinks with your pals. If you

fancy something more sophisticated, then why not

opt for a wine-tasting day? You might choose a West

Country vineyard such as Camel Valley (camelvalley.

com) or Pebblebed (pebblebed.co.uk) or even

travel to France or Spain and book tours of different

vineyards followed by a meal overlooking the Med.

For thrill seekers, book your gang in for a day of ‘It’s

A Knockout’ (itsaknockout.net). Based on the hit TV

show, you will be split into teams and take on the

challenge of the inflatable obstacles course. Or for

the quintessential British gent, why not book in a day

of punting? Pack some bottles of champagne and a

gourmet picnic and enjoy some indulgent time-out

with friends.

Remember ‘The Ring’? Various unfortunate

Japanese people watch a video, hang around

for a bit then die? I have a reboot I think we

can get off the ground in time for the 2014

Oscar season. Okay. Pitch face. So: Instead of a

video, there’s this song. And instead of playing it,

the unfortunates forget to play it. And instead of it

killing them, it ruins their marriage. And the song –

wait for it – is ‘Like A Prayer’.

I know what you’re thinking. Fantasy-horror niche, midnight

previews, drive word-of-mouth from the die-hards and score a

crossover hit. That’s obvious. That’s vanilla. Let me blow your mind:

we’re turning this into a serious, issue-led documentary, Michael Moore

style. There’s the twist. ‘The Ring’ was fiction. This bad boy is for real. We’re

about to expose the single biggest threat to marriage in the modern world.

We’re not, of course. That was just as close as my creative powers can come to how

seriously Lucy and her pal Cathy take ‘Like A Prayer’. After years of half-arsed data-

crunching they’re convinced that a wedding reception without it spells doom. If I told

them Shakespeare cut a reference out of Romeo and Juliet for fear of Madonna’s legal

team, they’d laugh, but they’d also want to believe me so much that somewhere, in

some small and terrifying corner of the human brain devoted to ladies’ superstitions,

they actually would.

Weddings activate that portion of the brain, as people with

shares in old, new, borrowed and blue stuff have known

for centuries. And this superstition is a big one. Just as in

The Ring, there’s no silver bullet once you’ve been exposed

– prevention is the only option. Cathy arrived at her own

reception with the track cued up on her mobile, saved to a

USB drive and burnt to a CD, just in case the DJ veered from

his brief. (I found that out in the course of writing this, and

laughed so hard I had to give up for the evening).

Back in film mogul mode, I’m wondering whether we

can get Madonna’s backing. I doubt ‘Like A Prayer’

made the playlist when she tied the knot with Guy

Ritchie, and look what happened there. He made

‘Revolver’, a film that made everyone who saw

it wish they were dead, and divorce swiftly

followed. She knows the score. We get her

on board, make it a journey of pilgrimage and

repentance, finish with a shot of Madge literally

‘down on her knees’ while the track plays at my

wedding. That’d get me into Lucy’s good books for life.

Anyone know a gullible financier?

Say the word ‘buffet’ and bland visions of insipid pastry,

limp sandwiches and less-than-appetising vol-au-vents

might spring to mind. As the afterthought to the main

event, the evening buffet can be the neglected chapter of

the wedding menu.

We implore you – don’t leave your evening guests with a poor

aftertaste in their mouths. Treat them to a spread of delectable

fare that reflects the standard of the wedding breakfast, while

echoing the attention to detail carried through your entire

wedding.

Thanks to the rise of the tea party, the trend for rustic weddings

and vintage nostalgia that makes us all coo for lovingly presented

bite-size portions of food to adorn our chinaware, the buffet

has finally been lavished with the attention it deserves. The

modern buffet is packed with colour, creativity and – most of

all – flavour.

Taking the classics we all know and love – the sausage roll, the

scotch egg, the vol-au-vent – and giving them a modern and

flavoursome twist is a sure-fire way to delight guests of all ages

and tastes. Think tartlets oozing with cheese, roulade filled with

fresh crab, meat seasoned with tangy flavours and decadent

chocolate delights.

There are endless opportunities for personalisation. You might

incorporate some family favourites – your mum’s sausage roll

recipe or your granny’s famous quiche. For a locally sourced

dimension, choose from the extensive selection of Cornish

cheeses now available, fresh fish landed on local shores and

meat and eggs from nearby farms. You might even opt for a fun

take on traditional dishes such as saffron buns, hevva cake or

pasties.

Beyond the flavours, buffets comprise a fabulous opportunity to

wow your guests with a striking visual impact. Think creatively

about the layout and décor. How about miniature bunting to

dress the cheeses? Scotch eggs served in egg boxes? Or a platter

of bite-size seafood delicacies served on a surfboard?

The Round Kitchen has devised a creative, tasty and achingly

hip menu to inspire your bespoke buffet. Forget the wedding

breakfast – you’ll be saving the best for last.

A delicious selection of drinks is an essential ingredient of a palate-pleasing wedding. wed serves up a little liquid inspirationwords Rebecca Matthews

ALL SORTED FOR WINE AND FIZZ

The bride and groom might be the stars of the

show – but the food and drink play a crucial

supporting role at every wedding. And, while so

many couples invest hours debating the merits of

the scallops over the chicken pâté or the red wine

jus over the lemon and parsley sauce, a crucial

element of this heavenly fusion of flavours – the

drinks – is often overlooked.

So we implore you: don’t pump your guests full of gag-

inducing wine and cheap lager. Treat them to a decent

tipple. Granted, the budget is a crucial factor in choosing

your drinks menu so – before you splurge all your cash

and find yourself left with a few meagre quid to buy

some bargain-basement booze – ensure you allocate a

substantial figure for the drinks at an early stage.

Consider how you would like to breakdown the costs

of your drinks menu – for example, do you want to

splash out on something special for the toast and opt for

an economical option for the drinks reception? Ensure

you do your research to secure good value for money.

“Really think hard about the budget and what you get

for your pound,” advises Nigel Ede of Experience Wine.

“Very little wine now appears at £5 per bottle and

approximately 67% of this price goes towards the tax

and duty element. If you increase your spend to £6 per

bottle, then the duty and tax element is down to about

58% and you’ve increased your spend on the actual

wine element by 50%! I’m not saying that there are

not drinkable wines around the £5 mark, but if you can

afford to spend a little more it will pay off hugely in the

quality you are drinking.”

So pour a little thought into your budget and choose

some tasty wines and refreshing drinks accordingly. A

taste bud-tickling reception begins here.

THE DRINKS RECEPTION The ceremony is over; the vows have been taken;

your mother has mopped the tears from her eyes.

Now comes the time for your guests to mingle, pose

for photographs, wow over each other’s frocks and

fascinators and – perhaps foremost in their minds –

enjoy a drink. “Sparkling wine or Pimm’s is the tradition

here, but I feel you can be inventive and put your own

twist on your reception drink,” says Nigel.

Think carefully how to incorporate that personalised

flavour. It might be a wild hibiscus flower placed in each

glass of sparkling wine, which infuses the liquid with a

hint of pink and faint taste of raspberry – perfect for a

pink themed wedding. Fruit punch and pink lemonade

served from Mason jar drink dispensers creates a country

fete vibe, while mead fizz makes a sweet and satisfying

tipple for a Cornish celebration. You might even go for

a bespoke cocktail menu for a lip-smacking – and coolly

creative – option. “Cocktails can be more refreshing on

hot days, but I would keep an eye on the alcohol levels,”

Nigel warns. You might invent your own cocktails –

imagine the fun you’ll have experimenting – or you could

rename classic cocktails based on your names, the venue

or theme of your wedding. If you’ve chosen a vintage

theme, research the cocktails of the era, such as Bee’s

Knees for the ‘20s or Tom Collins for the ‘50s, or choose

concoctions based on your colour scheme.

THE WEDDING BREAKFASTNow’s the time to serve some carefully chosen

wines to complement your menu. First things

first: keep your order simple. Don’t spend hours

agonising over the percentage of red wine versus

white wine drinkers amongst your guests; a

complicated order often leads to wastage and most

wine merchants will offer a sale-or-return policy.

The food is the most important factor to consider.

“If you are going for set courses, you can serve

wines which will complement the dishes.

Alternatively, if you are offering an assortment of

dishes, you may wish to go for wines which are

more flexible for a variety of foods,” says Nigel.

“This might sound a bit serious, but certain wines

will complement certain dishes, whereas some

wines can clash with certain dishes. I love Pinot Noir

and I love horseradish – put the two together and

it’s like sucking on a rusty iron bar.”

Don’t blow your budget on gallons of wine without

a tasting session first. “Choosing the wine for the

day can be great fun. Everyone has slightly different

tastes, so it’s worthwhile inviting a few friends and

family members around to taste the wines and

getting an overall opinion. I would definitely sample

the wines with similar food you are proposing on

the day,” says Nigel. An indulgent evening of food

and wine in the company of your favourite people

sounds like much more fun than agonising over

the guest list, eh? The final decision concerning the

wine, however, should be made by you and your

fiancé – not your wine aficionado father or sweet-

toothed granny.

Remember to include some thirst-quenching and

flavoursome liquid refreshment for non-drinking

guests and children. “Some guests may try to

pace themselves by switching to soft drinks during

the day,” says Nigel. “Fresh local apple juice is a

favourite. Cornish Orchards’ new lemonade is also a

delicious idea for the table tops.”

THE TOASTYou’ve listened, you’ve laughed and you’ve cried at

the heartfelt and hilarious speeches. Now it’s time

to officially toast your union by raising a glass of

something delectable – so crack open the statement

sparkler. Champagne is the traditional and endlessly

popular choice. “Champagne is lovely, but the costs

are going up and up,” Nigel comments. “I would

advise against buying cheap champagne because it

has champagne on the label. You are much better

spending the same money on a top-end sparkling

wine.”

Consider striking a celebratory chord with a locally

sourced flavour. “If you have the budget, Camel

Valley Brut is a great local alternative to champagne:

delicious, crisp clean fruit with refreshing notes.

Polgoon Aval is another local favourite; this is

apple-based but still produced in the champagne

method,” recommends Nigel. Don’t leave the non-

drinkers with yet another bland soft drink while

everyone else sups on a decadent number. Choose

a refreshing drink produced in Cornwall for that

extra stamp of local identity: “Cornish Orchards’

elderflower pressé is a great non-alcoholic

alternative for the toast,” suggests Nigel.

THE EVENING RECEPTIONAs night falls and the dance floor beckons, the

drinks will be flowing as guests mingle at the bar,

work the room and prepare to pull some serious

shapes. So what are the best options for oiling those

limbs? “It is very easy to get carried away with a

huge variety of options, and again it is really down

to your budget. I would definitely run with wine, but

you could opt for a more economical option than

the wedding breakfast wines,” says Nigel. Go for

quaffable, crowd-pleasing options.

For further liquid refreshment, again, look to

the superb selection of local producers, from

flavoursome ales from your favourite Cornish

brewery served from the barrel to scrumptious

ciders produced on the verdant slopes of the

county. A cocktail bar serving a selection of simple

and refreshing concoctions is sure to be a hit;

you could even hire some expert mixologists for

excellent drinks with a twist of entertainment

thrown in.

ONCE UPON A TIME..

The perfect theme for bookworm brides,

imbue your wedding with wonderfully

wordy details for this climactic chapter

in your own love story. Taking Young &

Battaglia’s beautiful ‘White Bookshelf’

wallpaper as the starting point for the

design concept, this theme combines crisp

white, old books and bespoke artwork for

a stylish and evocative aesthetic.

Paper chains and jam jar lanterns, made from

the pages of broken books, hang from the

beams, while table numbers and a ‘ring book’,

crafted from old books, comprise fabulous

focal points. Upcycled books make for coolly

innovative props, while book pages used to

create the table runner echo the colours in the

aged stonewall of the barn.

The literary loveliness continues with the

stationery: covetable bookmarks double up as

place settings for guests to treasure. Simple

white jugs complement the white blooms, while

personalised artwork and a vintage typewriter

on which guests can type messages to the bride

and groom add a quirky twist. The result? The

perfect setting for your happy ever afters.

HOW TO MAKE SEASIDE DECOR

You’re in the perfect county for a seaside themed celebration. Revel in

the barefoot vibe by throwing a personalised party awash with handmade

nautical details; think aqua accents, playful props and décor utilising sand,

pebbles, pearls and shells.

SEASIDE DELIGHTSBring the seashore to your tabletops with simple but effective décor. A striking table

centre and menu in a bottle oozes a laidback, sea-loving mood. Escort cards make a

creative alternative to the traditional table plan, while handmade favours make for an

easy breezy memento of your day.

You will need:

Goldfish bowl vases (available from Inspire Hire)

Empty wine bottle or similar

Sand and shells

Beach buckets

Mini enamel buckets (available from Inspire Hire)

Cardboard

Ribbon

PVA glue

Teabags

Paper

Table centrepiece1) Take two empty goldfish bowl vases.

2) Fill the bottom vase with sand, shells and pebbles.

3) Fill the top vase with sand, shells, pebbles and a pillar candle.

4) Stack one vase on top of another.

Menu in a bottle1) Immerse two teabags in a tray of hot water.

2) When the tea has cooled, place a sheet of A4 paper into the tray.

3) Remove before it is saturated and place on a baking tray. Place the baking tray

in a warm oven for a short amount of time until the paper looks dry and aged.

Check frequently and do not leave it unattended. Prepare the menu on a PC and

print onto the aged paper. On the reverse side, print ‘MENU’ at the top of the

page in landscape format.

4) Place sand and shells into the bottle.

5) Tightly roll menu and tie with ribbon. Post the menu into the bottle, leaving

ribbon ends and/or the end of the menu sticking out of the bottle mouth so that

it can be easily removed.

Sandcastle flag escort cards1) Using a spreadsheet or by hand, print guests’ names – and each table number or

name – onto A4 coloured card. (For measurements contact Inspire Hire)

2) Cut out the guests’ names into flag shapes

3) Attach to kebab sticks with PVA glue. Do the same for each table number or name.

4) Fill beach buckets with sand and place a table number flag into each one, then

place guests’ name flags in the relevant bucket. Create an escort card table or

display this instead of a table plan.

Mini bucket place settings/favours1) Take the mini buckets and draw around the top

of the bucket to create a template for the ‘lid’.

Using some thin cardboard, cut out lids for each

bucket.

2) Glue a section of ribbon to the underside of the

cardboard disc to act as a handle for the lid.

3) Pierce the cardboard disc with a kebab stick

and use to dip each disc into PVA glue and then

a tray of sand. You can also use glue to fix some

small shells and stones to the lid.

4) Fill each mini bucket with sweets or other small

gifts for your guests. Place each sand covered

lid onto the top, leaving the ribbon handle

outside of the bucket, and place a name flag

into each one. Tie a ribbon around each bucket

and place in front of each place setting.

feature | DIY BRIDE | HOW TO MAKE SEASIDE JEWELLERY

OCEAN JEWELThere’s something ethereal and feminine about this crochet cuff:

the soft colours of the sea-glass and shells reflect the rock crystal

beautifully, while the tiny crystals provide a touch of sparkle that

echoes the sun glinting off the sea.

You will need: About 3m of 0.3mm or 0.4mm wire

Around 40 different size stones or beads: rock crystal, crystals

and pearls work well

A few pieces of sea-glass (wire-wrapped) and shells

A hook or clasp

Flat-nosed pliers and snips

A small file

1. Take a 1.5 m piece of 0.4mm wire and make a loop in one end by

wrapping or twisting it back on itself.

2. Put your crochet hook through this loop (from front to back) and

wrap the wire once around the hook in a clockwise direction. Using

the hook, pull the wire through the loop whilst pushing the loop

off the hook. You should have one loop on the hook and two loops

joined now

3. Continue with this movement so that you create a chain around

20cm long. Try and keep it loose with fairly big loops: it really

doesn’t matter if it’s a bit messy and it’s a lot easier to work with if

you can get the crochet hook in easily. Start to crochet the second

row by changing direction and putting the hook into the nearest link

in the chain. Wrap the wire round the hook as before and use the

hook to pull it through both loops so that just one loop is left on the

hook. Do a couple of links like this.

4. Then thread your beads, shells and a couple of wrapped sea-glass

pieces onto the other open end of the wire: you’ll probably need

between 20 and 30 for this row depending on how ‘full’ you want it

to look. Make a little loop at the end to stop them falling off.

5. Shuffle all these beads and finds to the end where the hook is. Put

your hook through the next ‘link’ from front to back as before and

push the bead right next to the chain before you wrap the wire

round the hook. Pull the wire through both wire loops on the hook,

leaving one on the hook as before: the bead should now be held

loosely in place. Keep going with this technique all the way along

the string chain. You can be fairly haphazard – just try to get some

beads and glass to sit on the cuff in a random way; it’s supposed

to look messy and sea-weathered. To make a deep cuff, you might

want to join on another 1m length of wire and go back along the

cuff, attaching beads and sea-glass in the same way as before; you

can just keep going with adding extra rows until you get it as deep

as you like.

6. To finish, all you need to do is attach a fairly large hook onto one

end by wrapping the end of wire through the hook a few times: sort

of stitching it on. Then just snip the extra wire off and file any rough

edges down gently.

Top tip: to prepare your sea-glass to be incorporated in the cuff, just wrap

a 30cm length of 0.6mm wire three times horizontally around the glass and

once vertically. Twist the ends together at the back and snip off any excess

wire: file any rough edges and the glass can be threaded onto the cuff wire

through the back.

CORNISH TIPI WEDDINGS

For back-to-nature loving…

CORNISH TIpI WEDDINGSArriving at the home of Cornish Tipi Weddings is like stepping into a faraway

land – a secret valley of ancient woodland cloaked in wildflowers, ferns and

meadowsweet and scattered with ancient oak trees and tipis. Lulled into the

hypnotic ambience of this enchanting place, you feel instantly at one with the

elements – the birdsong filling the air, the breeze toying with the leaves and,

during the warmer months, the heady scent of wildflowers.

This dreamy setting is a wonderful natural canvas on which you can paint a truly

personalised wedding. You might envision an intimate ceremony akin to an ancient

ceremonial fully immersed in the sounds and sights of nature, a weekend-long festival

wedding with live music, bunting strewn between the trees, guests huddled around

bonfires and dancing under the stars, a quintessential country wedding, a flamboyant

tea party or even a simple picnic.

Nestled in a grassy clearing in the woods, a purpose-built pavilion crafted from

willow and canvas is perfect for couples dreaming of an al fresco ceremony. Imagine

approaching the pavilion through a walkway of foxgloves, bluebells and wild roses, and

taking your vows surrounded by ancient oak and ash trees, while the gentle sound of

water emanates from the brook and rays of sunlight dance on the ground.

The reception setting is entirely up to you. Smaller wedding receptions might take

place in the Grand Lodge, the site’s biggest tipi; for larger parties, you might opt for

the bohemian feel of the Moroccan marquee or an alternative tented space from a

marquee hire company.

The pure water lake begs for some gorgeous couple portraits – not to mention a pre-

wedding or post-wedding dip. You might even slip off in the rowing boat for some

romantic – and oh-so memorable – moments revelling in your newly wedded status,

and, as night falls, float a series of coloured nightlights across the water for a truly

magical atmosphere.

The ideal setting for an eco wedding, sustainability is the keynote at Cornish Tipi

Weddings. With low impact accommodation and a feast of locally sourced produce,

rest assured you can throw a tailor-made celebration with a minimal carbon impact.

Spend your wedding night in a tipi and wake to the murmur of nature. You might

choose to prolong the party - whether it’s tucking into brunch or a barbecue, a game

of cricket or a spot of swimming or fishing in the lake – and relish some cherished time

with your close family and friends in these blissful surrounds.

For a moorland love story…

TREvENNATake a family-run farm steeped in history, a supreme location overlooking the

staggering landscape of Bodmin Moor and a cluster of luxurious barn conversions.

The result? A distinctive, private and stylish sanctuary. Set in 142 acres of rolling

countryside, Trevenna is perfect for couples seeking to marry – and celebrate – in utter

seclusion.

This rural retreat specialises in bespoke wedding celebrations: your party may enjoy exclusive

use of the facilities and accommodation for a one, two or three night stay. The rustic setting is

your personal party space for the duration, allowing you the freedom to mark your union entirely

as you wish, whether it’s throwing a welcome barbecue or laidback dinner in the farmhouse,

going for an exhilarating pre-ceremony ramble through the countryside or tucking into a brunch

together the morning after.

Trevenna hosts intimate weddings through to celebrations for up to 100 guests, and ceremonies

may take place in the cosy climes of the Shippon Barn or the ambient setting of the Threshing

Barn, with its natural stone walls and contemporary glass stairway. In good weather, you can take

your vows beneath the natural wood and slate arbour alongside the pond.

Some recent additions have added to Trevenna’s charms. Available for weddings throughout

the year, a fully heated new marquee structure makes for a fabulous setting that can be tailored

to the style of your wedding. Crafted from oak, slate and canvas, the space comes with natural

stone walls and panoramic windows overlooking miles of beautiful landscape. New LED lighting

with adjustable spot lighting, fairy lights and mood lighting – with colours that can be changed to

match your colour scheme – allow you to set the mood you desire and coordinate your party

down to every last detail.

Trevenna’s catering team creates tailor-made wedding menus full of fresh, local produce, and vary

from relaxed countryside picnics, hog roasts and fish and chips suppers to formal three-course

Gastro Farm House dining. The Threshing Barn’s sleek new bar is a perfect spot for guests to

mingle and sup on a range of Cornish tipples such as draft Korev and Rattler.

The recently restored Farm House is perfect for throwing a relaxing welcome meal the evening

before the wedding, while the new Farm House bar is an idyllic place to wile away a few hours – a

veritable private pub – before returning to your luxurious accommodation. Fusing original features

and modern comforts, the cosy retreats can accommodate 40 guests and are designed with

relaxation in mind; think deep bathtubs, drench showers, log burners and underfloor heating.

Housing a creative team, an ethos of flexibility and a private and endlessly pretty location,

prepare for the ultimate in bespoke and beautiful at your very own hosted house party.

feature | VENUES | LITTLE WHITE ALICE

For wonder in the wilderness…

LITTLE WHITE ALICETucked away amidst 25 acres of wild Cornish landscape, where mossy

green hills slide into dense thickets and grassy meadows, and ancient

granite boulders line winding hedgerows bursting with gold-tipped

heather, you’ll find Little White Alice.

Sustainability is central to the Little White Alice ethos. The charming cluster of

cottages embraces its environment: textures of granite, slate and wood, teamed

with sensitive architectural design, ensure this pretty sanctuary slots seamlessly

into the landscape. The cottages are light, comfortable and adorned with original

artwork and luxurious features, combining the latest eco development ideas with

a cosy ambience.

It is very much a living and breathing environment where rabbits, cats, moles and

foxes roam the land, and a wildlife pond and bird feeding stations support the

local wildlife. The site is also home to pigs, chickens, bees, bats and barn owls.

An inspired new initiative – the celebration woods – sees trees being planted to

commemorate the marriages that have taken place in this bewitching setting.

Little White Alice hosts a small number of weddings each year. Specialising in

intimate celebrations, the rental of The Oak House for a weekend stay is the

minimum requirement for a wedding, although accommodation for up to 24

guests is available on-site should you require it.

At the heart of Little White Alice lies a natural swimming pool framed with

granite boulders and, in the warmer months, flowerbeds bursting with colour.

An oak arbour overlooking the pool and miles of rolling countryside makes an

extraordinary setting to take your vows. As dusk falls, a series of lights casts a

magical ambience across the water. You might embrace the laidback mood by

relaxing by the fire pit, taking a dip in the pool or wiling away some cherished time

in the wood-burning hot tub, all the while drinking in views across this hidden

corner of Cornwall.

The Oak House, an intimate space bathed in natural light which opens onto a

private garden, and The Studio, a stirring setting with vaulted ceilings, are also

licensed for ceremonies. Intimate receptions may take place in The Oak House.

For larger celebrations, a marquee, yurt or whatever form of canvas takes your

fancy might be sited in the garden for a secluded celebration space. One day,

however, won’t be enough. Extend the festivities for a few days and savour every

moment in this wild and wonderful Cornish retreat.

feature | VENUES | STARGAZERS

For a private party by the sea…

STARGAZERSPerched on the coast of St Mawes, this luxury property offers

privacy, intimacy, comfort – and some of the most breathtaking

vistas imaginable. Sunny south-facing terraces, which slip down to

manicured lawns and landscaped gardens, overlook the twinkling

waters of the Fal estuary and an endless ocean beyond.

Arriving at Stargazers is like coming home. Light, airy and cosy despite its

scale, a large kitchen and dining area opens onto extensive lounge space with

floor-to-ceiling windows ushering in panoramic views across the gardens and

seascape. Accommodating ten people, the sumptuous bedrooms continue

the clean and contemporary aesthetic, complemented by pretty pops of

colour and texture. Stargazers has two sister properties close by, which may

be booked in conjunction to accommodate extra guests.

Although Stargazers does not currently hold a civil ceremony licence, there

are some idyllic churches close by. There is also a choice of registered venues

scattered across the Roseland Peninsula; the breathtaking setting of St Mawes

Castle, for example, is just a short stroll away. It is difficult to imagine anything

more romantic than walking to a Tudor castle to take your vows and then

returning to this chic coastal retreat for the reception. Alternatively, you

might opt for a humanist ceremony in the grounds of the property.

After the ceremony, toast your union in the gardens before those formidable

sea views and pose for photographs on the lawn. Child guests will relish

exploring the hidden corners of the gardens while your guests mingle on the

terrace.

You may choose to throw an intimate dinner party for ten of your nearest and

dearest inside the house, or perhaps opt for a larger celebration for 50 guests

in a marquee erected in the gardens, framing those views. From sophisticated

gourmet fare prepared by an in-house French chef to a laidback vintage picnic

or fish and chips on the lawn, Stargazers lends itself to a celebration tailored

entirely to your wishes.

As night falls, you might wish to groove to a live band or chill out to acoustic

sounds on the terrace. True to its name, this dreamy location makes a

wonderful vantage point for some stargazing – so don’t forget to savour some

loved-up moments peering up at the star-speckled Cornish skies.

Lying at 13°W and 29°N, Lanzarote is perfectly placed for constant

stores of sun, not to mention azure Atlantic Ocean. Located 70 miles

west of Morocco, the African continent delivers warm Saharan blasts

while its original Spanish influences remain enticingly strong.

At around four hours flight time, newly-weds wishing to avoid long haul travel

need not look any further than the Canary Islands’ most northerly offering. And

though its appeal may rest on its easiness – for those wishing sweet escapism

and hassle-free travel closer to home, it’s a definite crowd-pleaser.

Believed to be a lasting vestige of the great Atlantis civilization, its intriguing

history features pirate attacks and ancient religious battles. Possessing a

powerful latent volcanic force, its position on one of the Earth’s most potent ley

lines that also passes through the Colorado Plateau and Plateau of Tibet ranks it

as one of the world’s best ‘power spots’.

Garnering mystical and spiritual kudos and with a very palpable artistic identity

– despite its barren-looking volcanic landscape – there’s more to Lanzarote than

may initially meet the eye. And, of course, the lap of luxury is never far away…

The sumptuous five-star Princesa Yaiza Suite Hotel Resort boasts a prime

position on the stunning sands of Playa Blanca, providing a heavenly honeymoon

hang out.

Tailoring their packages specifically to suit the individual needs of every couple,

the expert team promises a unique and memorable experience at a sublimely

romantic hot spot.

The hotel’s Hispano-Arabic themed design echoes the cohesive character of the

island while maintaining its landmark identity and position as one of the most

lauded in Lanzarote. Offering Mexican, Italian and Japanese foods, its choice of

eight fabulous restaurants guarantees a lip smacking selection of global cuisine.

Stay in any of the specially prepared suites overlooking the manicured gardens

and four private swimming pools, and enjoy lingering views of the beautiful

island of Fuerteventura – just a 15-minute ferry ride away – that frame the

breathtaking backdrop. Treat yourself to their new Carita Paris treatments at the

Thalasso-therapy Spa and experience first-hand the hotel’s reputation for first-

LOvE, CAMERA, ACTION!

LOVE, CAMERA, ACTION!

My nuptials are looming on the not-so-distant horizon. And, having run a

wedding magazine for five years, I am painfully aware of the importance of

good wedding photographs. In years to come, those images will be stirring

the sights, sounds, smells and golden moments of that day. So I want to look

my best. After all, who doesn’t want to be wowing the grandchildren with

gorgeous images of their younger selves?

But there’s a problem: I don’t like the camera. Never have. Aside from my early years

and the odd school photograph, there are huge blanks in my celluloid life where I

avoided the camera like the plague. As for family videos, I’m the one who runs out of

the frame as soon as I clock the camera is running to leave my less-camera-shy (ok,

full on attention-seeking) siblings to hog the limelight.

So now I’m faced with a problem: my ultimate moment in the spotlight is beckoning

and I have a phobia of being photographed. The sheer presence of a camera in close

proximity does strange things to my face and posture as crippling self-consciousness

sets in. But, come the wedding day, I’m going to be facing more lenses than Kate

Middleton on a trip to Tesco.

The solution? I’m putting myself on a fast track to camera love with a little help from

the image experts. And, all you camera-shy brides and grooms out there – you’re

coming with me.

LOVE THROUGH A LENSFirst and foremost: choose a good photographer. Not only should you love

their photographic style, you should feel comfortable in their company. “Pick a

photographer with a relaxed attitude who will completely blend into the wedding

day and make you feel at ease,” advises Sarah Falugo of Green Photographic

(greenphotographic.com).

A pre-wedding shoot is a fantastic way of building a rapport with your photographer,

as well as your confidence in front of the camera. “These shoots are great as it gives

you an idea of what to expect. Plus it gives the photographer a chance to get to know

you better, and see how to shoot you,” advises Ben Tyler from Ben Photography

(benphotography.co.uk).

You’ll find that some photographers offer a pre-wedding shoot as part of their

package. Choose a location that has personal resonance for you, wear your favourite

outfit, bring props such as balloons or funky signs, or even take your dog along –

anything to increase your comfort factor. “You will see the flattering results before

the wedding and this should build your confidence that you are photogenic and your

photographer will do a good job,” says Sarah. Not only will you have fun, you’ll feel

more relaxed about having your photograph taken come the wedding day – and you’ll

have some gorgeous images to boot.

PICTURE PERFECTChoose a dress and accompanying accessories that make you feel amazing and, most

importantly, comfortable. “It’s important to dress for your shape and wear something

comfortable – if you feel uncomfortable then this will show in the photos,” advises

Sarah Falugo. “I once photographed a bride who wore huge heels to compensate for

the height difference between her and her husband. She couldn’t walk properly and

was clearly uncomfortable, which showed in some of the photos. She would have

looked a lot happier if she dressed comfortably and naturally”.

Flawless make-up will make you look – and feel – the part. “Get a good make-

up artist. You might be tempted to do your own make-up or ask a friend, but a

professional make-up artist often makes all the difference. They know exactly how to

make you look your best, in a way that will look good on camera,” comments Ben.

A good make-up artist will accentuate your best features and hide blemishes. What’s

more, there’s something about having luxury make-up applied by a professional that

makes you feel glamorous, boosting your inner confidence for the photographs.

107

feature | PHOTOGRAPHY | LOVE, CAMERA, ACTION!

Then there’s your hair. Your hairstyle and colour

can work for or against you in creating shadows and

brightness in the most aesthetically pleasing areas

of your face. Work closely with your hair stylist and

experiment with a variety of styles, and decide on a

look that flatters your face and overall bridal attire.

If you’re self-conscious about your teeth, consider

a tooth-whitening treatment or cosmetic dentistry

before the wedding – the power of a set of pearly

whites has an incredible impact in boosting your camera

confidence. And don’t underestimate the effect of well-

shaped eyebrows in framing your face.

So you’ve sorted the aesthetics, but there’s still a

niggling feature that makes your confidence plummet

in front of the camera? “If there’s something about

yourself that you particularly don’t like, tell your

photographer and make-up artist and let them worry

about it. Trust me, the photographer wants to get

photos that you will love, so will be more than happy to

help you hide anything you can’t live with,” says Ben.

Sarah agrees, “Tell your photographer beforehand if you

have a sensitivity about a certain feature. They can then

work around this and avoid publishing the photos you

may not ‘appreciate’. Take it easy on yourself; all your

features are the ‘real you’ and you will still look fabulous

– every bride does. Don’t lose perspective: your

wedding is a celebration of love – not a fashion show.”

BEST FACE FORWARD

Make-up artist Eve Ashby offers some insider tricks on looking camera ready...

Make-up can work miracles – just look at celebrities. On screen they look perfect, with high

cheekbones and incredible skin, but in those sneaky paparazzi shots they look just like the rest

of us. So how do they do it? Well, mostly by using a technique called contouring to flattering

their bone structures and highlighters to give their skin that extra polished look.

The idea behind contouring is to use a highlighter on areas you want to stand out and on areas you want to

sink back you use a darker colour like bronzer or a blusher that isn’t too pinkie.

To do this, fill in the hollow under your cheekbone with a dark shade. Then bring this colour in a half

moon shape around the edge of your face and onto your temple, buffing out the edges so that the colour

doesn’t come to an abrupt end. This will sink back the under part of your cheek so that your features look

chiselled. Now add highlighter to the higher parts of your face, like the top of your cheekbone and under

your eyebrow. This should create a lovely sheen that will catch the light and make your make-up pop

when you’re caught with a camera flash.

There are lots of contouring products on the market. For the darker colour you’re looking for something

one-two shades darker than you are naturally. The best types of products for this part are the ones

without shimmer like Dior Bronze Matte Sunshine and Guerlain Terracotta Bronzing Powder.

Go as sparkly as you like for the highlighter but be careful not to look too disco! Not all colours look good

on everybody; it’s very much dependent on the colour of your skin. A great range with a choice of colours

is BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector.

Contouring is one of those tricks where people won’t be able to put their finger on what’s different about

you – you’ll just look so much better!

STRIKE A POSEVictoria Beckham, Paris Hilton, J-Lo…these women know how

to work the camera. Study photos of them and you’ll spot all the

hallmarks of a woman who has scrutinised their face and body,

learnt how to look camera-ready and put it into practise. While a

Victoria Beckham scowl may not be the look you’re after on the

happiest day of your life, assuming a basic knowledge of posing

technique and deciding what works for you will lend an inner

confidence that will shine through in your photographs.

FACEEven the teeniest of ladies can suddenly find themselves sporting

a double chin in photographs. There are a few tried and tested

tricks to help eliminate the chin factor. “Raising your chin by a

few degrees helps to give you a more defined profile,” advises

photographer Sarah Toomey (sarahlaurenphotography.com). You

might try Jackie O’s trick of looking slightly above the camera

or, if the photographer is at a lower level, looking more or less

directly forwards. Then there’s your mouth to consider. “Smiling

with a closed mouth rarely looks natural. Think happy, excited

thoughts and it will come through in your expressions!” says

Sarah.

BODY You’ve fallen for a sleeveless wedding dress but you’re self-

conscious about your arms? Try not to clasp them too close

to your body. “Keep your shoulders down and relax your

arms. Also, putting your hand on your hip helps avoid squashed

arms by keeping natural distance between them and your body,”

advises Sarah. As for capturing your torso at its best, take heed

of a classic celebrity trick: “To keep your waist looking as tiny as

possible, twist 45 degrees and keep your weight on your back

foot”.

Remember the golden rule: no slouching. A good posture will

make you look slimmer, elegant and confident; just imagine an

invisible chord at the top of your head stretching you upwards.

Try not to over think posing technique on the day: you’ll just

look rigid and self-conscious. Simply absorb the basics, get lots of

practise so that they become second nature – and be natural.

AND RELAX…Take some deep breaths – and relax. “The most important thing

that you can do to look good in photographs is to relax,” says

Ben. “When you are tense, the muscles in your body tend to

tighten up. This makes your shoulders come up and leaves you

looking uncomfortable. So before your photos are taken, take

a deep breath and just try to mentally relax yourself.” Once

you’ve relieved the tension from your jaw, neck and shoulders,

you need to enjoy yourself – yes, really! “Have fun, do silly things

that make each other laugh, and try to forget that the camera is

there,” says Ben.

Remember why you’ve chosen your photographer, and have

faith in their ability. “Trust. You have hired a professional whose

job it is to flatter you. Trust that you look great – it’s all about

confidence and acting as naturally as possible,” says Sarah. “It’s

your job to enjoy your day, it’s up to the rest of us to capture you

looking your best,” adds Ben.

However, do heed a word of warning: “Don’t drink too much!”

advises Sarah. “Champagne eyes get a little droopy, and no

amount of Photoshop can fix that drunken look!” There goes my

cunning plan for my forthcoming paparazzi moment then…

It’s official: the world has gone wedding crazy! As marriage rates rocket, wed celebrates the beauty and benefits of matrimonywords Hannah May

pOWER OF TWO

POWER OF TWO

Marriage is à la mode. According to the Office

for National Statistics, 2010 saw a 3.7 per cent

increase in the number of weddings in the UK in

a year and a whopping 8,657 more couples taking

to the aisle than in 2009. And these figures look

set to rise.

Today, marriage is more about choice than expectation –

something couples are more likely to openly discuss and

consciously plan for rather than assumedly ‘do’ as with

some previous generations. So, why take the plunge?

Depending on what study you read, the general

consensus is that matrimony is good for us. Providing

a wealth of varied benefits for both men and women,

it is said to reap greater financial, physical and mental

health rewards, giving longer life, better sex and even

improved sleep in the process.

In ‘Psychology: The Science of Mind and Behaviour’,

author Richard Gross cites studies by American

psychologist Helen Bee that claim, ‘married adults are

less vulnerable to both disease and emotional distress

because they are buffered by support from their

attachment to their partner,’ and that, ‘married young

adults are happier, healthier…and have lower rates

of various psychiatric disorders than those without a

partner.’ Furthermore, figures recently published from

the government’s study into the nation’s happiness have

revealed that married people are the happiest, claiming

a better sense of well-being than that of cohabitees.

Though most benefits are derived from ‘permanency’ –

the collateral resulting from a long term and committed

relationship (and therefore not confined to marriage

alone), the added aspect of matrimony seems to

accentuate this state of security, leaving couples with an

extra depth of dedication and understanding unique to

the social union of marriage.

In short, marriage is a powerful tonic for the mind, body and soul.

Crystal Pearce, experienced relationship counsellor

with Relate, offers her professional opinion as to why

couples choose to get married. “People get married

because they are very much in love; they wish to

commit to each other, bring up children and have a

family – with both being involved in the raising of the

children. They also want to make a statement to their

community that they are committed to each other and,

of course, have a day to always remember.”

She agrees that couples enter into matrimony aware

of the advantages available while mindful that the

relationship requires constant consideration. “There’s

no doubt that married people do put more effort into

their relationship and are more likely to work at solving

their problems, whereas unmarried people are likely to

find it easier to walk away.”

She believes the dynamic – and resulting rewards – may

alter over time, but so long as the original love and

couple’s core values remain in the relationship, it will

continue to thrive: “Any long term relationship moves

from the first flush of being in love to a committed,

comfortable and stable lifestyle, which brings much

satisfaction and intimacy.”

The stability of marriage also offers a sound foundation

for raising children. “It is considered that being in a

committed relationship brings many health and financial

benefits” that help “children feel secure, who also

benefit from both the mother and father being role

models,” says Crystal.

It is important to constantly assess the pros and cons

throughout the course of marriage, as Crystal admits:

“Of course, there are difficult times in any relationship,

but couples who are committed are also committed to

resolving their difficulties and put the effort in required

to make that happen.”

Though she extols the virtues of marriage and

the effort to maintain it, she also cautions that its

dissolution can and will happen to some, in which case,

certain realisations must be made. “In some instances,

especially if there is abuse from one partner to another,

there needs to be an acceptance that the relationship

will fail.” If the balance shifts dramatically to the other

end of the scale and everything (including counselling)

fails to reinstate that feeling of security and happiness,

then couples may sadly have to contemplate closure.

However, as the majority of married couples will testify

– marriage has far-reaching and long-lasting benefits

beyond compare. Some married women share their

insights into the joy of matrimony.

‘THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT BEING MARRIED THAT JUST FEELS GREAT’Recently married Mary Pickles offers her thoughts

on the benefits of matrimony. “Getting married has

actually changed very little about my life, I haven’t

even changed my name! However, there is something

about being married that just feels great – from the

day itself, which was better and more emotional than I

ever would have thought, to an extra feeling of ‘being

together’. I was never somebody who was desperate

to get married, but we decided to do it at a time that

felt really right and I’m very glad we did, it just seals our

relationship in a way nothing else really can.”

‘MARRIAGE MADE US MORE RELAXED WITH EACH OTHER’Contrary to sometimes popular belief, marriage isn’t

simply ‘a piece of paper’ and many couples sense a

change after the ‘I do’s. Sally Orchard, who has been

married for seven years, comments: “I really felt that

our relationship changed after, as we seemed to be

more relaxed with each other.”

‘THE COMMITMENT MAKES YOU TRY TO WORK IT OUT’Sustaining a bond of friendship – and a dedicated

approach to commitment – has been key to Terri

Crooks’ marriage. “I have been married for 42 years,

not all easy – in fact some extremely difficult. It is not

an easy opt out. The commitment really makes people

try to make it work and in most cases, it does.”

‘MARRIAGE IS A COMMITMENT TO LOOK AFTER EACH OTHER AND OUR FUTURES TOGETHER’Newly-wed Gemma Garbutt-Stokes is full of meditations on her recent marriage

to long-term partner, Liz. “I have to be honest, before Lizi proposed to me I

wasn’t sure whether marriage was something we would or wouldn’t do but

when you are eleven years deep into a relationship, it just felt incredibly right!

We plan on starting a family soon and we saw marriage as a way of setting a view

of unity and commitment to each other and to our new little family. We know

we will need help in making our family beyond just Lizi and I, and this was a way

of possibly letting our future little ones know we made a commitment to our

future in front of all that we love to stay honest and loving, and to look after each

other and our futures together.” Her thoughtful endnote echoes the sentiment of

many married couples. “Marriage is as much security for us as it is a show of unity

to our families – present and future – that we love each other, that we want to be

together and are willing to commit to this in front of all the people we love now

and will love in the future.”

‘YOU FEEL MORE TOGETHER AND MORE AS ONE’Louise Russell tied the knot with her partner Matt in 2008. “I never imagined that

being married would change the way I feel towards Matt because I believed that

we had reached relationship nirvana. However, since we have been married, I’ve

noticed that there are really subtle differences that amalgamate to make you feel

more in love, more together, more close and more as one – which rocks as you

just don’t expect that the depth of your closeness could intensify.”

‘MARRIAGE IS A WONDERFUL FOUNDATION FOR FAMILY LIFE’Newly-wed Sarah Christopher is relishing her first year of marriage. “We got

married ten years into our relationship but had known for years it was something

we very much wanted to do. Adam and I looked at the wedding day itself as a

celebration of our love and the decade we’d already spent together as well as a

thank you to those dearest to us for all their support – our timing couldn’t have

been more perfect as we’d reached a stage where we were both financially and

emotionally secure.

The best way I can describe our feelings towards marriage is a quote from

‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’ – one of the readings at our wedding: ‘Those that

truly love have roots that grow towards each other underground, and when all the

pretty blossom have fallen from their branches, they find that they are one tree

and not two.’

We simply got to the stage where we couldn’t bear not to be married – it meant

so much to stand up in front of our families and vow to love each other for

eternity.

We both acknowledge how blessed we are to have not only married our best

friend but to have found each other so young as our shared history further adds

to the magic – we’ve not only grown up together but grown into each other…our

marriage has such strong roots.

With our first child on the way, I really feel marriage is a wonderful foundation for

family life – our little boy is an extension of our love and we can’t wait to help him

grow the best foundations for his own journey.”

‘I LOVE IT WHEN HE SAYS MUNDANE THINGS LIKE “WHAT SHALL WE HAVE FOR TEA, WIFE?”’Tracey and Mike got married two years ago after nearly 20 years together.

“We had pretty much done everything else: two gorgeous girls, various mortgages,

a dog, a rocking engagement party and much more. I love being married. Although

I’m not very conventional, it was always awkward knowing what to call him. I

love it when he says mundane things like ‘what shall we have for tea, wife?’ I also

love feeling more bound to him in some strange way and having a specific identity

to society (I haven’t changed my surname or my title though!) And I adored my

wedding!”

Gemma and Liz A sandbank in the Maldives was the paradisical backdrop for Liz’s

proposal: “There we were – just us, an umbrella, an ice box on a

tiny white sand bank, surrounded by beautiful turquoise water and

coral reefs,” reminisces Gemma. “We went into the water for a

swim and Liz produced the ring and asked me to marry her.”

Tucked away in a tranquil setting on the outskirts of St Ives, Liz’s family

home played host to the couple’s bohemian style wedding. Gemma, who

runs Kalamari London (kalamarilondon.com), lovingly crafted all the details.

Her handpainted images of the cottage, a nearby signpost and the beautiful

surrounding landscape adorned the invitations, and made the starting point

for the design of the wedding.

A colour scheme of cornflower blue and white stylishly signified a seaside

vibe, which had personal resonance for both Gemma and Liz. “We were

both brought up by the sea – Liz in St Ives and me on the Isle of Wight –

and it has made a lasting and lovely impression on both of us,” says Gemma.

In homage to Gemma’s family background – her mother was brought up

in Sri Lanka – a colonial India influence found form in the print inside the

reception tent from LPM Bohemia and Gemma’s Grecian style Temperley

dress. “It has a sari feel to it and that’s why I loved it,” she says. An array of

wild flowers was perfectly in keeping with the relaxed summer vibe.

The ceremony took place in balmy sunshine before miles of rolling

countryside. The couple exchanged very personal rings, handmade by

Gauge Gallery in St Ives, which depicted the skyline of St Ives. “Turning

around after our lovely celebrant announced us for the first time as Liz and

Gemma Garbutt-Stokes and seeing all the people we know and love happily

throwing rose petals over us was my favourite moment of the day,” says

Gemma.

Guests supped on cocktails and tucked into canapés such as golden

calamari strips and chargrilled crayfish before a fabulous feast including pork

and apple kebabs and barbecue chicken skewers from Gourmet BBQs. The

evening entertainment came in the form of Liz’s DJ sister who kept the

party grooving with the perfect blend of music.

Looking back, Gemma and Liz wholeheartedly endorse involving your

nearest and dearest in the preparations. “It was an amazing experience,

with all our friends and family mucking in on all levels to make the day

special!” Gemma has some wise words for couples in the throes of

planning: “Be true to yourselves and what represents you both; do

something with your day that you will look back on in 20 years and think

‘no regrets’.” She adds: “It’s nice to mix new ideas with older tradition;

tailor it to how it fits for you as a couple.”

Hannah and AndrewWith Hannah’s Cornish heritage and Andrew’s Scottish roots, it was

entirely fitting that the couple’s wedding would be a veritable Celtic

extravaganza. Although they both studied in Glasgow, it was during

a university surf trip to Cornwall that they first met. “We didn’t

get together until a couple of years later. Eleven years on, Andrew

proposed at home in our flat in Edinburgh with a pocket full of family

heirloom diamond rings and I had to choose one!” says Hannah.

Fowey was the backdrop to their Cornish-Scottish celebration, which saw

details such as bagpipes, kilts, thistles, Cornish pasties, St Austell beers and

ceilidh dancing infusing their wedding with a colourful Celtic atmosphere.

Hannah brought a handmade touch to proceedings by crafting Cornish pasty

table name holders from wire and sailing boat name markers from driftwood,

while family and friends pitched in, making features from the cake and the

invitations to the jewellery.

The personalisation continued with the wedding dress. Hannah customised her

dress with lace from her mum’s wedding gown, while a bespoke headdress

made by Sarah Drew fused more of the lace with pieces from her late

grandmother’s necklace. “It was beautiful and exactly what I wanted,” she

comments.

The ceremony took place in Fowey Hall. “It was beautiful and very personal as

we had commissioned a poem to be written specially for us by Cornish poet

Bernard Ward,” says Hannah. What’s more, the presence of a very special

guest ensured the ceremony had the ‘ahh’ factor. “Our wee staffie Merryn

was our ring bearer and walked down the aisle! She looked so sweet!” recalls

Hannah.

The celebrations spilled outside into the sunshine where cream teas and

bubbly were served on the lawn. A procession to the sound of bagpipes saw

the party wind their way through the streets of Fowey to the reception venue,

Fowey Town Hall, which proved the highlight of the day for the couple.

A delicious Cornish-Scottish feast of Cullen skink (Scottish smoked fish soup),

Cornish pasties, chocolate brownies and cranachan (a Scottish raspberry

dessert) served with Callestick Farm ice cream and clotted cream went down

a treat, and Cornish ceilidh band, Choughed To Bits, provided a memorable

evening’s entertainment. “They were incredible, talked everyone through each

dance, and we danced all night!” recalls Hannah.

“All the homemade elements made the day so special and helped keep us

within budget,” Hannah reflects. She thoroughly recommends a creative and

collective approach to wedding planning: “Add in lots of personal touches as

these are what you and your guests will remember, and make sure you get a

fabulous photographer as they will capture the moments that you will cherish

forever.”

Caroline and MilesCaroline and Miles’ engagement set the tone for their

sunny summer wedding. “I popped the question on

Caroline’s birthday. We were on the front lawn of our

home just after we’d returned from holiday,” says Miles.

They decided their wedding celebration should take

place right there at home, making for a highly personal

affair. Ensuring all elements were as local as possible, the

celebration had a strong sense of local identity.

The couple officially tied the knot at Truro Register Office the

day before the real celebrations kicked off. Amidst glorious

sunshine, Caroline slipped into a stunning Vivienne Westwood

gown, which she accessorised with a vibrant bridal bouquet

and delicate blue flowers woven into her hair.

Their enchanting woodland blessing took place on their land,

in a glade alongside a stream, where an arch entwined with

blooms made a beautiful focal point. Everyone then gathered

in front of the house where cocktails and canapés were

served to the toe-tapping soundtrack of bluegrass band, Blue

Horyzon.

As the day progressed, the party relocated to a marquee

across the meadow, which was decorated in a simple yet

striking style: white and peach tissue paper pom-poms were

suspended from the ceiling, while white hydrangeas standing

in clear glass bottles were offset with blue wine glasses. About

Taste served up a sumptuous selection of dishes including

potted crab, roast leg of lamb with summer vegetables and

raspberry pavlova.

The lively repertoire of entertainment continued in the

evening with renowned musical maestros Jelly Jazz, who had

guests grooving into the early hours.

Continuing with the local theme, the newly-weds enjoyed a

super short haul honeymoon, spending some precious time at

a variety of Cornish destinations including Carnkief Sty near

Perranporth, St Mawes and the Isles of Scilly.

“Being lucky enough to get married at home was wonderful,”

Miles comments. His favourite moment of their celebration

typifies the relaxed and fun-filled nature of the day: “Driving

down to the marquee on Tillie the classic tractor!”

Vicki and MarcMarc proposed to Vicki during a weekend at a

spa hotel in Bath. Taking Vicki on a country walk,

he dropped to his knee against an enchanting

woodland backdrop and a stream skimmed by

swans – and popped the question.

Their December wedding reflected the classic romance

of the proposal – Vicki dazzled in a fairytale gown

teamed with exquisite jewels, while a colour scheme

of pink and silver married the sense of romance with a

touch of seasonal sparkle. She carried a medley of pink

and cream calla lilies with twinkling diamanté detail,

while trailing ivy and candles lent a magical ambience to

St Uny Church where the ceremony took place.

After taking their vows, the newly-weds savoured their

trip to the Carnmarth Hotel in a Strawberry Leisure VW

campervan. The celebrations took place in the marquee

room where the delectable pink table centrepieces from

My Chocolate Explosion provided a feast for the eyes

and the taste buds. “They made for unusual and novel

centrepieces that doubled as favours, and looked really

effective in the marquee room,” says Vicki.

In keeping with the season, the wedding breakfast

comprised a hearty and warming feast of dishes such

as winter vegetable soup, roast beef and horseradish

mash and Todka crème brûlée. A Michael Bublé tribute

act provided some mellow sounds for the evening

reception.

A range of friends and family pitched in with the

wedding preparations, from a close family friend

who expertly arranged the flowers to Marc’s Uncle

Peter who made a show-stopping five-tier chocolate

cake with gold leaf and chocolate ganache, adorned

with delicate pink iced flowers. “Having all our family

and close friends around us on the day made it extra

special,” reflects Vicki.

Vicki recommends adding a handmade touch to your

day: “Make as much as you can, and utilise other

people’s talents to stick within your budget.” And don’t

forget to revel in the moment: “If you get time take a

minute, step back and take it all in,” she advises.

Jodie and JonJodie and Jon met while studying at Oxford University. “I was one of the second year

‘fresher helpers’, tasked with helping new students settle in. It meant I was the first

person Jon met, but I made him do a bit of chasing before we started dating a year

later,” says Jodie.

Jon popped the question during a surprise trip to Oxford. After recreating their first date, he

whisked Jodie off for a punt down the Cherwell River and a picnic before presenting her with a

special cake from The Oxford Cake Shop with a ring box hidden beneath the icing.

A colour scheme of gold and ivory lent a mood of classic romance to their wedding, while a

series of love quotes served as a thread to tie the whole day together. “Lots of the wedding was

themed with sentimental quotes from our relationship or the wedding service itself”, says Jodie.

Jodie’s customised dress echoed the elegance of the celebration. Cut-offs from the lace were

wrapped around the stems of her bouquet and her late grandma’s wedding ring was tied into

the arrangement for a poignant ‘something old’.

The wedding ceremony took place at St Mawgan-in-Pydar Church – the church where Jon was

christened – to a stirring soundtrack by harpist Ruth Wall. Afterwards, guests snacked on pasties

at The Falcon Inn before jumping aboard a trio of King Harry coaches. “Jon and I enjoyed

a chauffeur driven journey to St Mawes with plenty of time to soak up that we had just got

married!” recalls Jodie.

Afternoon tea heralded the arrival of the party at St Mawes Castle. After a feast of dishes such

as Portloe crab and rack of Cornish lamb from About Taste, guests tucked into chocolate

orange wedding cake from The Oxford Cake Shop for dessert, complete with an iced topper

recreating the moment Jon popped the question.

The Dukes of Havoc performed to a packed dance floor throughout the evening, but the best

entertainment came when Jodie’s sister stepped up to sing one of their favourite songs as a

surprise.

Jodie recalls one of her favourite moments: “When all the bridal party had left for church and

it was just Dad and I stood by ourselves, having a quick hug – a very personal and cherished

father-daughter moment.” The couple’s memorable use of words provided another standout

memory: “A highlight is our guests’ reactions to their personalised place names. We wrote

an individual poem about what each of our 148 guests meant to us and had it carved into a

wooden plaque and hung on everyone’s chair,” says Jodie.

Jodie advises relishing every moment of the wedding experience: “If you don’t have to, don’t

rush off after the wedding day to go on honeymoon. We got to see all of our guests again – and

in many cases got to actually chat to them properly for the first time!”

Cara and Steve“It was love at first sight across a train carriage,” Cara reflects on

the moment she and Steve first locked eyes on the train to Truro en

route for a night out. “We were introduced on the platform, headed

into Truro and that was that; we got talking in the first pub and never

looked back.” In homage to that fateful meeting, Steve chose that

first pub – The One Eyed Cat – as the setting for his proposal on New

Year’s Day 2011.

The couple’s passion for snowboarding inspired the style of their wedding.

“We created our own winter wonderland,” says Cara. A palette of white,

silver and glitter, with teal providing a splash of colour, carried through the

details. Named after ski pistes, each table was adorned with white fur, glittery

fir cones and branches to reflect a snow scene on a mountain, while snowflake

decorations hung from the ceiling. Topped with personalised figurines, the

cake represented snow-cloaked mountain slopes, while white gerberas mixed

with silver bear grass complemented the crisp, magical aesthetic.

The Carnmarth Hotel made a stylish contemporary backdrop for the wintery

celebration. The couple followed the marriage ceremony with a naming

ceremony for their daughter, Amelia. “It made the day even more special than

it already was, for our little girl to have her moment,” says Cara.

After the moving ceremony, guests supped on warm winter Pimm’s before

entering the ‘winter snowboarding wonderland’ in the marquee room. Amidst

the glacier white décor, they tucked into a hot buffet of lasagne, leek and

broccoli tagliatelle and seafood in a champagne sauce.

The eclectic entertainment included a game of ‘Jelly Belly Beanboozled’ on

each table, a caricaturist from Magical Memories and a snow-themed photo

corner. “We set up a sofa with accessories including snowboarding goggles,

woolly hats, furry boots, oversized glasses and an inflatable saxophone. It

was a great success!” laughs Cara. As night fell, a DJ took to the decks and

everyone danced the night away. Rather appropriately, the couple rounded

off their celebrations with a trip to Austria for a week of snowboarding and

skiing.

“Everyone kept saying afterwards how personal the whole thing was to

us, and how it represented us perfectly as a family,” Cara reflects on her

personalised winter party. “It is often said, but you never appreciate it until

after the day, and that’s to really make the most of every second as it just flies

by.” She advises: “If you can make your budget stretch for your photographer

to stay on for the evening reception then do it; all you have left after the day

has gone is photographs and memories and the latter always fades.”

Three years later, after returning from university, they realised there was

a definite spark between them and they began dating.

Marshall whisked Johanna back to the setting of their first meeting for his

romantic proposal. “On that beautiful sunny February day on St Mary’s, with our

favourite island St Agnes in the background, he dropped to one knee and asked

me to marry him. I was so overwhelmed I forgot to say yes!” recalls Johanna.

Preparations immediately began for their tropical beach themed bash. Reflecting

their passion for the coast and travel, they envisioned a medley of bright colours,

eclectic flavours and a relaxed vibe taking in some cherished locations. “We felt

that the flowers really set the feel for the whole wedding – a happy, laidback

day,” says Johanna.

The couple were married under an archway woven with vibrant flowers in the

Boardroom at Blue in Porthtowan, where Johanna walked down the aisle to

the Native American ‘Shoshone Love Song’, performed by her parents’ choir,

The Riverside Singers. “The ceremony was very personal and intimate; there

was lots of laughter and cheering. We wrote our own vows and our family and

friends read poems. Everyone agreed that it was a really joyful, heart-warming

ceremony,” says Johanna.

The entire wedding party walked across the beach – Johanna’s favourite moment

– and arrived at Chapel Porth for a beach barbecue. There, they feasted on

Moroccan lamb kebabs, Jamaican jerk chicken, Cornish pork sausages, falafels

and halloumi cheese. “To wash it all down we drank our favourite cocktails from

our trip to the Cook Islands and also had plenty of Cornish ale and Australian

wines.”

Their home in Gwithian had been transformed into a party palace for the evening

celebrations: a canopy housed the dance floor, the summerhouse was turned into

a Moroccan lounge and two marquees were bedecked with colourful décor.

The newly-weds took to their newly constructed dance floor for their first dance

to Jason Mraz’s ‘Lucky’. The party then kicked off in style as The Sandy Acre 7

performed, followed by their DJ friend Steve Hole who kept the party going into

the early hours. “I can honestly say I’ve never danced or smiled so much. It was

the best day of my life,” says Johanna.

The evening ended with a surprise firework display that Marshall had arranged,

and the couple jetted off to Bali for their honeymoon the next day. Johanna’s

advice is simply to enjoy the while experience: “Don’t get caught up in all the

formalities and dance ‘til you drop!”

regular | ADVICE

GETTING STARTEDWhen: choose a season, year and month.

Where: decide on a rough geographic area,

whether it’s locally, abroad or in your home

county. Will it be a civil or religious ceremony?

Who: devise the guest list. You need to have

an idea of numbers, which could be restricted

by the venue size and budget.

Budget: decide how much you can truthfully

afford to spend on your wedding. Are you

parents able to contribute?

Style: does outdoor or indoor, traditional or

unique, or a theme such as vintage take your

fancy? This will help when working out your

budget and choosing your venue.

PERSONALISING YOUR WEDDINGDrinks: make signature cocktails.

Table names: name tables after places that

are special to you or your favourite things, e.g.

books, songs, movies.

Photos: include family wedding photos,

photos of you both growing up and photos of

momentous occasions in your relationship.

Stationery: opt for a bespoke design, perhaps

of your church/venue or favourite place. Write

a personal memory about each guest on the

back of their place setting.

Jewellery: wear a family brooch or necklace,

or incorporate it into your bouquet or table

setting.

STYLING YOUR MARqUEE

Paper: different sized paper lanterns and

pom-poms hung at different heights are cost

effective and add interest and atmosphere.

Fabric: printed table runners, bunting and

ribbons add fun and detail.

Colour: inject colour with a coloured carpet

and punchy details like napkins and water

glasses. Little bursts of bold colour work

better than single blocks.

Flowers: floral centrepieces, garlands,

archways, marquee poles and topiary are great

ways of adding blooming prettiness.

Lighting: don’t underestimate the power

of lighting in creating ambience. Consider

uplighters, spot lights, candles, hanging lanterns

or fairy lights.

STRESS BUSTING Relationships: keep communication open

and honest. Address any tension immediately.

If you’re seriously arguing about napkins, it

usually means there’s something else going on.

Finance: only plan for a wedding that you

can afford. Putting yourselves under financial

pressure is not worth the stress.

Delegate: you’ll be surprised that so many

people want to be involved with the planning.

Utilise their talents and delegate.

Guest list: write two lists, the first for

immediate family and close friends and the

second for other family, colleagues and friends.

Be fair but honest about how many you can

cater for.

Wedding free times: make it a rule to have

‘wedding free time’ where you’re not allowed

to discuss the wedding, such as meal times and

girly nights out. It will be refreshing to have a

break from the planning.
