No!!!l

The studies on discount rate to account for exchange rate took a lot of time and just show that there is no conclusion (except that the topic is complex). I think analysists nowadays do model data in each subsidiary (of multinationals) and account for scenario analysis in the cash flows. Instead of finding an impossible discount rate.

The coursepack notes are incomprehensible due to image quality. Class sections were excellent and engaging, but the exams tested technical ability that was not covered in enough depth in class.

l

Less anecdote based and perhaps more emphasis on certain reading materials or finance principles.l

Loved the course, very practical with a right mix of theoretical foundations and real stories.l

Awesome class, thank you for your preparation and command of the material. Your lecture style is engaging and really helps us think and develop intuition

l

Overall I would have preferred if the topics covered in class were explained a bit more in detail using analytical tools (equations, graphs etc) to help us understand better why things work the way they do.

l

It would be good to have more focus on creation of forward looking models and what might be reasonable factors/inputs that could feed into them.

Least Valued Materials

Online assignment system is messy. To submit and grade excel online is inefficient.l

The cases were much more abstract than the textbook problems, which was good, but by the second half of the semester I started to really feel out-of-place as a non-MBA. Some of the class discussions were also really hard to grasp.

l

Online homework assignment system. l

The assignments. Although they give us an idea of a real world situation in which we can apply what we have learnt in class, they were way too big, way to complicated and their instructions were not so clear. So instead of actually apllying knowledge, we were mostly spending all the time trying to find what information to use.

l

The online excel problems are worthless. If we have to spend time on something outside of class, I would have preferred to have done homework assignments similar to what will be on the exams...that way we can actually be more prepared for exams.

Everything was valuable.l

The homework and case studies. They seemed irrelevant and did not help prepare me for the exams.

I think there might be one too many assignments, however, particularly end of October. There is a period where cases, midterm, and spreadsheets are almost back to back. It was more painful than effective.

l

A little lack of premises here and therel

Agnico Eagle was a dense and interesting case but I don't know how much I gained from it - I felt crunched for time because of the time of the semester we received it.

l

Some lecture slides were not relevant or useful. I would go through each slide deck and ensure they are up to date and each slide has a purpose.

l

I felt the cases were a little challenging to do independently. Dr. Bailey did provide online resources in terms of the pdfs on Blackboard, but I felt that the TA and other students were the most helpful sources of information.

They are all valuable but I don't have enough time to study in depth.l

the initial lectures of discounting and future values were interesting and helpful to understand the finance world.

I found the understanding of bonds as the "bone structure" to a nation in terms of valuation. One of the best ways to understand the importance of the bond market in finance and valuations.

l

The entire semester was effective at helping my understanding of finance. l

All of them were really good. l

Least Valued Class Sessions

The classes with all math examples or all theory with no application.l

Optionsl

Nothing was of less value but had some difficulty in understanding stocks and bonds post chapter 9l

The last 2 weeks of class moved too quick - add in some review/re-cap of previous classes so the material seems to build logically. Second half of the semester jumps chapters a lot more so the flow is a little less organized.

More real-world examples. How is this material truly useful to us in a job setting? l

The course structure is well established and focuses on all the details effectively.l

I didn't think any topics needed more time.l

As someone in the real estate program the Real Options concepts play a big role in real estate valuation.

l

An overview class for international finance before diving into the details. l

Real life cases about topics discussed in class are interesting. It would be good for me if I can prepare some background information ,maybe from readings that professor can suggest.

l

Options, Time Value of Moneyl

I wish in general the course was smaller. We had classes were two whole chapters of the book were given. Plus all the assignments, I cannot see one taking this course and others and having a ok time. It it way too demanding.

Topics Warrant Less Time

Too much focus on accounting and depreciation. Yes, I agree they are very important. But those topics should be left to an accounting course. In addition, I think too much time was spent early in the course on NPV and discounting. Those topics are relatively simple and can be covered quicker.

l

I thought the basic quantification skills seemed a waste of time. Working on the larger problems would reinforce these skills and make the tests fairer.

I didn't think any topics needed less time.l

Improve Effectiveness

I am a foreign student. I am easily to get lost in your class. One of the reasons is that I am not familiar with the topics and you speak very fast and there are a tons of information in your class. Maybe you could try to slow down.

l

Professor is Excellent when it comes to his teaching style, but he is too fast. Sometimes its a bit tough to catch his flow as an international student

l

Professor Bailey was great and helpful. Really encouraged questions to creat e a collaborative learning environment.

l

It’s better to have more instructions on case analysis assignments like the Agnico Eagle casel

Maybe leave a bit more of the work on cases to the studentsl

Professor Bailey is a really nice instructor. He was very helpful in all his class lectures and sessions. I personally don't think is there anything that he needs to change. Maybe provide class lecture notes to students. One other advice which is not for the instructor but for the program/admin is that students taking this as a core class should be given pre-requistes or some relevant material to study before joining the program to have some basic understanding of managerial finance. Apart from that everything was good!

l

Page 11: Cornell University Johnson Graduate School of Management ......l Online assignment system is messy. To submit and grade excel online is inefficient. The cases were much more abstract

Improve Effectiveness

I have had no exposure to finance before this course, and therefore I found it extremely difficult. From Day 1 there was a lot of new unfamiliar vocabulary. That being said, I have learned so much, though I am not sure my grades will reflect that. I wonder if there is a way to guide students like me (with no finance background) to take this course during a light semester so that it can be afforded the time it deserves. Having taken this class along with 6 others this semester was a mistake, and I would have gotten much more out of it with fewer conflicting commitments.

l

I think that Dr. Bailey did make himself available and was approachable for the most part when asking questions about course material. I did find this class more challenging than initially anticipated, but having the book, the TA, and other students as a resource definitely helped.

l

I enjoyed this class. However, the presentation of materials seemed disingenuous. I believe the class tries to be two things at once, a basic yet technical quant skills class, and a complex and abstract critical overview of finance. I struggled in this class because I hoped the class was more of the later, when in fact, I was only tested on technical skills. In the future, I would encourage students to treat this more as a math class and focus on solving finance problems rather than reading about the more abstract issues. If concepts are not the goal, test on ideas rather than technical problems. Overall, I enjoyed the semester, thank you.

l

I think professor Bailey is a great instructor and it was a pleasure being his student. He is clear, organized and he is always on time. I just think the course is too heavy to be taking with other courses in grad school. Way too many assignments that in my opinion don't really add value. In the end, the tests don't reflect the assignments and you end up spending all the time on them and not really studying for the exams.

l

He is very well organized andban amazing professor. No suggesttiobs none so ever.l

Spend more time working through problems or tying lectures into what the end judgement of the course is (working problems on tests)...

l

Taking notes in class is nearly impossible because we move through the slides at reading pace, not writing pace. This would be fine if the slides were sent out to students, but I understand that this would dis-incentivize students coming to class and might have trademark issues with the textbook providers. As it currently stands, I only retain a small percentage of what is discussed in class because I can't write it down quick enough.

l

The level of discussion in class was too advanced for intro students which made the professor prioritize class time discussing with students who already have finance degrees and CPAs. Beginner students are thus often left so behind and it is silencing to have such discourse that cannot be understood on top of not understanding the course content. It's not a matter of "just ask a question" but rather the professor might also recognize the class is larger and side discussions that go over most student's heads should probably be left to office hours.

l

Good class - very dense with information. Instructor made a point to be well-prepared and did not tolerate distractions - which I found useful and humorous. Clearly a veteran professor who has learned from past experiences.

l

I think this is a useful course and that Professor Bailey teaches the materials well. There are some class periods that have no bearing on any exams or tests, but those periods help to reinforce concepts and get students thinking about the materials beyond just studying for a test.

l

Told students to preview. l

Nothingl

Page 12: Cornell University Johnson Graduate School of Management ......l Online assignment system is messy. To submit and grade excel online is inefficient. The cases were much more abstract

Improve Effectiveness

None. Keep it up Prof. Bailey! I enjoyed your class a lot and the context/stories you provided were enjoyable and helpful.

l

Good job, no major changesl

I appreciate your commitment to giving us the full value of our education by not tolerating disruptions during class.
