Coral Gables Congregational Church Thursday, June 13, 8:00 PM, CGC-UCC CATHERINE RUSSELL Opening night of the 2013 Summer Concert Series brings a singing sensation born into musical royalty! Daughter of Louis Armstrong's long-time musical director, Luis Russell, Grammy Award winner Catherine Russell has been making fans and friends since the 2006 release of her debut album, Cat. Catherine’s latest release, Strictly Romancin’, was just awarded Prix du Jazz Vocal 2012 (Vocal Album of The Year) by the Jazz Academy in France. With a Billie Holiday lyricism and Sarah Vaughan depth, Catherine Russell—with pianist Mark Shane, Matt Munisteri, guitar and Lee Hudson, bass—will bring you to the edge of your seat on the way to your feet! “A masterful singer who knows how to inject her personality into the heart of a great song” Philadelphia Inquirer "Wistful, sultry rhythm and blues” The New York Times Thursday, June 27, 8:00 PM, CGC-UCC ORLI SHAHAM The Summer Concert Series is thrilled to present Orli Shaham, who touts an impressive international reputation as one of today's most gifted pianists. Recognized for her grace, subtlety and vitality, Ms. Shaham is a consummate musician also praised for many recording collaborations with her brother, violinist Gil Shaham. In a recital of Chopin, Brahms, and a unique presentation of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, you’ll experience Orli Shaham’s prodigious skills and interpretations admired by critics over four continents. Join in an evening of purely delightful music making! "A first-rate Mozartean, combining a crisp keyboard touch with an uncommonly nuanced approach to tone and phrase.” The Chicago Tribune “Perfection” The Guardian (London) Thursday, July 11, 8:00 PM, CGC-UCC PEPE ROMERO Pepe Romero is a true living legend in the world of classical music, honored by kings, heads of state and major institutions. The brother of two other musical phenoms—Celin and Angel Romero—Pepe touts his most important contribution as reaching all people, communicating the richness and beauty of the classical guitar to millions throughout the world. In a unique and special evening, the 2013 Summer Concert Series is proud to present Pepe Romero. You’ll revel in a great ambassador of classical music and, correspondingly, of the classical guitar. "Orchestral power and vocal lyricism!" The New York Times "Pepe Romero makes his guitar talk to itself!" The Los Angeles Times Thursday, July 25, 8:00 PM, CGC-UCC BRUBECK BROTHERS QUARTET Chris and Dan Brubeck had the unique privilege of growing up listening to, studying with and eventually playing alongside one of the great jazz legends of our time, their father, Dave Brubeck. Add to this heritage the fact that Chris and Dan's musical tastes were forged in the stylistically innovative 1960’s, and you have an exciting combination of musical elements to draw upon! With Dan at the drums and Chris on electric bass and bass trombone, an exciting evening goes over the top with the addition of guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb. Don’t miss this dynamic and compelling 2013 Summer Concert Series event, with a loving tribute to Dave Brubeck! “Elements of rock, classical, blues, funk, reggae and world music informed the quartet’s approach to contemporary jazz, adding considerable color and texture to the arrangements.” The Washington Post “If there is such a thing as ‘born musicians’ then surely the sons of famed jazz pianist Dave Brubeck qualify.” The Courier-Journal Thursday, August 8, 8:00 PM, CGC-UCC ALAN BAYLOCK JAZZ ORCHESTRA Featuring some of the finest jazz veterans of the Woody Herman Orchestra, the Count Basie Orchestra, Maynard Ferguson’s Big Bop Nouveau, the Airmen of Note and many others, the Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra is dedicated to the advancement of big band jazz. Led by composer/arranger Alan Baylock, the band has a cohesive, distinctive sound that is both entertaining and inspiring, and has been lauded by fans and fellow musicians alike. With explosive energy, ingenious re-harmonizations, imaginative melodies, tonal and rhythmic expressions and Alan's arrangements, the Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra expresses a great sense of joy and soulfulness. In an incredible evening, you’ll swing to standards old and new. Bring your dancing shoes! “Alan Baylock has achieved a goal that many artists aspire to, but often fail to reach.” Gordon Goodwin (Grammy & Emmy Award winning composer/bandleader) Thursday, August 22, 8:00 PM, CGC-UCC JOHN PIZZARELLI World-renowned jazz guitarist and singer, John Pizzarelli, closes the 2013 Summer Concert Series with flair! Using performers like Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra and Joao Gilberto and the songs of composers from Richard Rodgers, George Gershwin to James Taylor, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Lennon & McCartney as touchstones, John has established himself as one of the prime interpreters of the Great American Songbook and beyond. John brings to his work the cool jazz flavor of his brilliant guitar playing and singing. Joined by his brother, bass player Martin Pizzarelli, this will be an evening you’ll not want to end! “Madly creative” The Los Angeles Times “Reinvigorating the Great American Songbook and re-popularizing jazz.” The Boston Globe “A tour de force…a rare entertainer of the old school.” The Seattle Times THE YOUNG MUSICIANS’ SUMMER MASTER CLASSES (For the young-at-heart too!)
