From the front cover of the ‘Heat’ magazine, I am able to understand that the demographic of the magazine is teenage females. This is evident because the copy that is used on the front cover of the magazine- “big secrets revealed”. Males do not usually read gossip magazines, instead, they like to read about sports or music etc. Another thing helps me identify the demographic of this magazine is the amount of copy that is used on the front cover. Females are able to gather a large amount of information at once, however, the magazines that are aimed at males are usually simple colours, minimal amount of copy and minimal pictures. The specific demographic of this magazine is teenage females that like to read about gossip and the troubles that face celebrities. This magazine is aimed at the aspirers- materialistic people who are driven by others’ perceptions of them. Their aim is life is for status. This is evident in the front cover of the magazine as thing such as “extreme body overhaul” and “make up blunder” are written. This makes it evident that the demographic of this magazine will be very specific on the way they look as looking perfect will be a way to gain status in the society we live in.

On the jicnars scale, the target audience of this magazine will range from C1- D. Group D are semi or unskilled manual workers, group C2 are skilled working class, blue collar workers and group C1 are lower middle class, white collar workers. This is evident because the magazine is cheap (£1- £1.65) so you don’t need to be making a lot of money to buy this magazine. However, the products that are advertised in the magazine can be expensive, for example, Reiss tops for £69 and Ash shoes for £179. On the other hand, other products that are advertised are cheap enough for the D class to get their hands on such as £25 dresses and £10 skirts.

Target audience theory

• The reader of this publication would be a male white teenage/ young adult that is in college/ doing and aprentaship or starting a job likes rock music and likes to go to rock concerts. There is evidence to suggest this in the magazine as there was an advertisement for “Halo Reach” a video game that is about worriers, that most boys would play.
