HeaderBody Copy Firstly, congratulations to Nathan Muratore

of the Gembrook Cockatoo Football Club. To get selected in the U19 VIC Country Representative Team is an achievement in itself. To obtain best on ground honours is a credit to Nathan’s application and ability. Not many can boast a Peter Knights Medal, well done Nathan.

This week sees a bye for Division One. This was at the request of the VCFL to ensure players could be made available for the Australian Country Football Championships. Congratulations to Josh Taylor (Emerald); Jarred Bayliss (Wandin) and Caillin Porter (Emerald) on their selection. We know that you will represent your club and League with great skill, pride and commitment. Good luck in Wagga Wagga.

I believe I need to reinforce the Ambulance and insurance message again. Here goes:

There are always numerous calls to me about player insurance; what am I covered for, does my coverage include ambulance, etc.. As a player, coach, trainer, official or volunteer etc of a club of the YVMDFNL, you all become bona fide members of both the VCFL and Netball VIC. I will focus on football insurance, as netball insurance is very similar in structure and benefits. All clubs have a minimum cover and for the football side of things, it is referred to JLT Silver Coverage.

SILVER COVERAGE generally includes: Physio, Chiro, Dental, Ambulance transport, private hospital accommodation etc... ALL NON-MEDICARE EXPENSES. These types of expenses are covered for injuries sustained whilst participating in an official match or training session; travelling to and from an official club activity; participation in an official club function or tour and representative matches. Please note that a referral from a medical practitioner will be required to claim these types of expenses. Capital benefits also apply in the event of death or a permanent disability, in some cases up to $150k.

It is important to note that JLT SILVER INCLUDES

• A MAXIMUM OF $2500 PER CLAIM;

• 75% REIMBURSMENT

• EXCESS OF $75 PER CLAIM

Please note that nothing can fully substitute for Private Cover and that JLT Silver coverage should be seen as complementary to your existing medical coverage.

I would like to highlight an important item that some of you may not have considered. Some private medical insurance will fully cover you for ambulance cover... HOWEVER, if you are not covered by ambulance, the maximum claim you can make is $2500 through JLT Silver coverage.

So please consider the following:

• The base fee for a metropolitan road ambulance is close to $1000, if you are in the country the charge could be up to $2000.

• The base fee for a rotary wing air ambulance can be up to $4000.

Now if you consider JLT Silver coverage as primary insurance, you may in fact be significantly out of pocket or have a substantial part of your claim filled with ambulance costs, leaving little or no funding for your rehabilitation.

NOW CONSIDER THIS:

If you are not a member of Ambulance Victoria, then why not! It is not expensive...

SINGLE: $38.35 PER YEAR, That works out at $0.74 per week!

FAMILY: $76.70 PER YEAR, That works out at $1.48 per week!

Here come Kinglake! Their hibernation must be over. The fight in the Lakers has come to the fore and there is no doubt in my mind that the tough wintery and icy conditions are lifting spirits. Kinglake are now as committed as ever, and it just goes to show that solidarity and passion will more than make up for your best players being out of the team. Not sure Kinglake are in the same class as Belgrave, but they now look like finals contenders and may just rattle a few egos in September. Interestingly, Wazza reckons Kinglake will take over Powelltown’s position in the five with a win in the last round of the season over the enigmatic Demons.

Powelltown are capable of great things, but their form is almost impossible to follow. They need some consistency and football driven passion. There are a few too many players relying on their team mates... time to step up and mate up.... what do they say... all for one.... Powelltown with 21 committed players are more than capable... c’mon Powelltown, chances to play finals don’t come around that often.

Yea are teetering and need to re-establish some sort of momentum which we all thought they had only a few weeks ago. July is a tough month and if your mind and attitude is not on-song, you cannot win, no matter how good you are. Yea at home to Seville are a chance, but they will have to lift their spirits significantly. Now Seville are a most interesting team. Their steely resolve last week was proof enough that they are able to tough it out.... Seville’s ground has taken a bit of

a battering and it will be interesting to see how they play on top of the ground at Yea. Seville are a different team to last year, and possibly their losses and indifferent form may in a bizarre way place them in good stead come finals time.

Now Yarra Glen with no home, are fast running out of players, yet they are still able to muster effort, energy and team work to win games with style. They too like Seville, have experienced some highs and lows. That experience can only add value come finals time when finals pressure can dish up some interesting challenges. So what does all this mean for Belgrave, their season so far is perfect, no losses and minimal injuries. The danger of the perfect home and away season is that if you find yourself behind during a finals game, you sometimes don’t cope well with the pressure you have not experienced during the season. Perhaps time to change it up at Belgrave and play a few players out of position, just in case you have to do that come September.

Alexandra’s run home is not bad, and Wazza is confident that Alexandra can grab 4th or 5th spot. However, their meek surrender last Saturday against Belgrave suggests they may have an inferiority complex against the better teams. Wazza hopes he is wrong, but Wazza does believe Alexandra are much better than last week’s effort.

They’re players, coaches, committee members, volunteers and supporters. And every week, their club relies on the contribution of every one of them. But they’re also farmers, tradesmen, offi ce workers, truck drivers and much more as well. And doing those jobs safely, in safe working environments, is vital. players was what helped them to get over the line, but they were caught unawares by the intensity of Upwey and their readiness to enter each contest hard and low. Despite surging late in the game,Upwey ran out of time when they caught Woori on the back foot. Michael Witkowski, Joel Adams and Danny Ryan were Woori Yallock’s best.

Wandin 12.11.83 def Warburton Millgrove 8.15.63

Early on it looked as though this game was going to be tight, but only scoring two points in the third quarter is what let Warburton Millgrove down. The Burra’s were in the contest, but they crumbled under Wandin’s pressure in a match that was crucial for both sides. Both teams proved to be inaccurate when kicking for goal, but Wandin’s third term effort was enough for them to get a break. Brandon Kapakoulakis, Zachary King (1 goal) and Joshua Mende were fantastic in this scrappy affair, enjoying the conditions much more than their opponents.

DIVISION 1 UNDER 18s

Emerald 12.6.78 def Monbulk 2.3.15

A goalless first half of footy was what mainly contributed to Monbulk’s heavy loss to Emerald – that and the fact that the home side were able to adapt better to the scrappy conditions of their ground. Monbulk have struggled a bit this season, and coming up against the now third on the ladder Emerald, they were always going to have a hard time against them. Emerald’s Corey Deringowski (3 goals), Ben O’Ryan (1 goal) and Casey Thomsen were best in this match, getting many of their possessions in the middle of the ground and from the important clearances.

Mount Evelyn 10.16.76 def Olinda Ferny Creek 8.6.54

Mount Evelyn now sit comfortably in the top five. The Mounters led at every break, though there was the general feeling that Olinda were somehow going to work their way into the

game. But it was not to be, especially with Olinda only managing to kick a goal in the second term – but they played well enough to not allow their opponent to run off with the game. Olinda was always in it, and were very lucky Mount Evelyn were wayward with their kicking. Aidan Cyr, Jesse Bombinski and Jackson Taylor (2 goals) were Mount Evelyn’s best.

Upwey Tecoma 14.15.99 def Woori Yallock 3.4.22

Woori Yallock struggled in this match, and it not only showed on the scoreboard, but always in the way they played. They were sluggish in comparison to Upwey Tecoma, and were second to each contest; they didn’t go in hard enough. Upwey proved to be too quick, and although they were kicking at just under fifty percent, it was still enough to give them a handy lead. Nathan Beacom, Luke Hannon (2 goals) and James Blair (2 goals) in particular played very well in their side’s win, relishing in the freedom around their ground.

Wandin 35.13.223 def Gembrook Cockatoo 0.1.1

Further cementing their position of first on the ladder, Wandin had a resounding win over Gembrook. The Burra’s were always going to find it difficult to defeat the ladder leaders, but it was made impossible by the pressure Wandin exerted. They didn’t put a foot wrong, kicking nine goals to nil in the opening term – and after that, it was all Wandin. Luke McPhee and Aaron Rowe kicked ten and nine goals respectively, with Samuel Marsh kicking five. Troy Adamson (1 goal) and Benjamin Chapman (1 goal) also played well in Wandin’s very one-sided victory.

Gembrook Cockatoo star Nathan Muratore represented the U19 VIC Country team with distinction last Sunday earning Best on Ground Honours and winning the Peter Knights Medal. The VICS in the end won comfortably:

Worksafe VCFL U19 2.1, 4.6, 6.7, 12.14 (86)

VAFA U19 0.4, 1.4, 4.8, 4.12 (36)

Muratore dominated the VIC half back line, and not only did he turn back many VAFA attacking moves, he created enormous drive and turned those attacking moves into frequent inside 50 opportunities for the VICS. This achievement for Nathan tops off a great game at Swan Hill representing the YVMDF&NL senior team back in May and his week in week out performances with Division 1 ladder leaders Gembrook Cockatoo.

In other representative news, Josh Taylor (Emerald), Jarrod Bayliss (Wandin) and Caillin Porter (Emerald) will represent VIC Country #2 team in the Australian Championships next weekend at Wagga Wagga. Both Josh and Jarrod have been selected as Vice Captains. And continuing the strong showing, Mark Sandilands (YVMDF&NL Director) will be Peter Knights Assistant Coach for VIC Country #1 team. Also heading to Wagga Wagga is Jason Newman (YVMDF&NL field umpire) who has also earned selection for his solid umpiring performances both at home and in interleague.

DIVISION 1 SENIORS

Emerald 6.9.45 def by Monbulk 10.8.68

Despite a good start, Emerald struggled in the mud that consumed their footy ground. Their first and third quarters was when all the action happened, whereas the second and fourth was where they lapsed and their pressure dropped off. But Monbulk slugged it out and adapted to the conditions much better than the Bombers, using the mud to slide in low and get in and under the contests. The footy was won by the Hawks mainly

in the middle of the ground, where Sam Whittington (2 goals), Shane Van Seters and Dylan Werts got most of their possessions and were best in their side’s win.

Healesville 9.6 .60 def by Gembrook Cockatoo 24.20.164

Although the first quarter may have been a close one, the flood gates opened during the second term where Gembrook then ran away with the contest. Healesville struggled to get their hands on the footy, with Gembrook beating them to every contest and proving to be stronger and harder. The Bloods were lucky the final margin of 104 points didn’t blow out to anything more, as Gembrook were very inaccurate, despite Shannon Richardson kicking 6. Shane Williams (4 goals), Andrew Walker (3 goals) and Andrew Shipp (1 goal) were also instrumental in Gembrook Cockatoo’s win that sees Healesville on the bottom of the ladder.

Mount Evelyn 31.15.201 def Olinda Ferny Creek 8.12.60

Mount Evelyn has finally gotten off the bottom of the ladder, and they’ve done so in style. A ten goal to one first quarter set up the tone of the match, even though many were to believe that Olinda may have been planning a comeback. But that was not to be, with their star recruit in Damian Cupido kicking fourteen goals to single handedly beat Olinda off his own boot. This makes many wonder why Mt Evelyn has not played like this in previous weeks, but with Russell Cowan (3 goals), Regan Davis and Gareth Fraser (1 goal) also playing well, nothing could go wrong for Mount Evelyn.

Upwey Tecoma 9.13.67 def by Woori Yallock 12.4.76

In one of their better games of the season, Upwey Tecoma gave Woori Yallock a good run for their money, just falling short in a game that easily could have gone either way. The level heads of Woori’s more experienced

This weekend signals the high point of 2012 Representative Football commitments within the WorkSafe VCFL.

The WorkSafe VCFL is currently fielding two teams in the Landmark Australian Country Football Council (ACFC) Championships in Wagga Wagga, NSW.

The VIC1 team is chosen from all available players within the WorkSafe VCFL who represented their league in the 2012 WorkSafe Country Championships, and the VIC2 team selects from teams ranked 11-32 in the same Championships.

Both teams provide wonderful opportunities for all players to not only be selected and train with the players considered to be the best in their respective categories, but to also eventually team with them and compete against the best country footballers from the other states of Australia.

In 2010, Isaac Smith (Redan – Ballarat FNL) was asked to join North Ballarat Roosters in the VFL following his performances in the ACFC Championships and the rest is history...as he is now a key member of the Hawthorn push for the 2012 premiership in the AFL.

To all players, coaches and officials involved in these teams congratulations on your selection and involvement and all the very best in your pursuits, the VIC1 (WorkSafe) team is looking to defend the ACFC title from 2010, while the VIC2 (GrainCorp) team will be looking to improve on its standing in the country football community when it takes on NSW, WA, SA, QLD and VIC1.

13 other players from various VCFL leagues on the NSW border have also been selected to play in the NSW squad at the Australian Country Football Carnival,

taking a total of 63 players from the VCFL represented at the 2012 ACFC. To these players, we also wish you well at the Carnival.

The format of the ACFC Carnival is a tough one with teams having played each other across Thursday & Friday in shortened half games, with the Sunday (July 22) finals determined by ladder positions following completion of the round robin format.

It is a gruelling assignment in anyone’s language.

To Peter Knights (VIC1) and John Cossar (VIC2) and their dedicated support staff and assistant coaches well done and good luck.

Could we see a VIC1 v VIC2 final on Sunday July 22? – follow all the news on the VCFLfooty facebook page, @VCFLfooty twitter, www.vcfl.com.au or www.acfc.com.au

Last weekend the best U19 players from the WorkSafe VCFL competed against the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) at Elsternwick Park in Melbourne.

Across May and June, coach Damian Sexton and his selectors watched numerous club and WorkSafe Country Championship matches to form an initial squad of sixty players.

The WorkSafe VCFL’s main principle in providing a representative opportunity for country players at this level is to encourage and recognise players who may have been experienced TAC U18 football previously and who have chosen to remain in their local region, providing another realistic pathway for talent to be identified in country Victoria.

From this very match in 2010, Dan Nicholson (VAFA – Melbourne) and Arial

VCFL Rep Footy – More Than a GameStenberg (Sunraysia – Essendon) were drafted, Nicholson having represented the Melbourne FC and AFL level, with Steinberg and work in progress in the VFL for Essendon FC.

Both teams fought hard for the ascendency with neither team giving an inch in a tough and physical encounter, the VCFL team’s poise under pressure and skills were the main determining factors.

In the end it was the VCFL victorious in blustery and heavy conditions by 50 points.

The WorkSafe VCFL would like to thank EnergySafe for their support of the VCFL U19 team for without their support development opportunities for our best U19/20 players would be reduced.

There is no doubt that numerous AFL Club Recruiting Managers would have gone away from the match suitably impressed with the level of skill, persistence, tenacity and potential of many players in the WorkSafe VCFL.

We must also congratulate all of our Representative Umpires who have been recognised for their excellence and drive via the V/Line Academy Program and through their performances in WorkSafe Country Championship matches. Well done to you all and may your dream be recognised via the WorkSafe VCFL V/Line Academy program pathway to the VFL/AFL.

Division One - High Mountain Spring Water Cup

In very tricky conditions, the VCFL clearly won the contest at every change to retain the Under 19 Challenge Cup. The VCFL ran out 50 point winners at Sportscover Arena infront of an appreciative crowd from both the country and the city. The VCFL led by 20 points at half time and certainly had won the battle in a heavily contested match, transferring play from defence to attck with better precision and flair. The Ammos came out full of run after the half time break and got within 4 points before the VCFL boys steadied into the breeze to lead by 11 points at the last break. The last quarter saw the floodgates open with the VCFL boys kicking 6 goals and keeping the VAFA goalless with dogged defence and excellent run.

Nathan Muratore from Gembrook was awarded the Peter Knights Medal for best player for the VCFL after an impressive performence in a very tight and well balanced backline for the VCFL. Matt Tabener from Myrtleford was awarded the Best Player Award from the VAFA coaching panel. Tabener was the dominant forward in the match, taking a number of towering marks in the forward line, kicking 3 goals and showing an excellent workrate all day.

The VCFL Under 19’s defeated the VAFA by 50 points in a dominant display.

Division Two Looking Back by Carli Mitchell

DIVISION 2 SENIORSAlexandra 6.5. 41 def by Belgrave 18.20.128 Continuing their dominance of the competition, Belgrave remain undefeated after another round of football, with their last scalp being Alexandra. A seven goal to nil first quarter foreshadowed the final score of the game, with the Rebels playing a game of catch-up for the next three quarters. Mitchell Collins kicked seven goals in a dominant display up forward, with teammates Thomas Stubley, Kyle Chandler (2 goals) and Peter Gough (1 goal) always being stand-outs in their side’s massive win. And with Alexandra only managing eleven shots on goal, they were always going to struggle after such a slow start.kinglake 26.22.178 def Yea 2.2.14 Registering their fifth win of the season, Kinglake did so against Yea – and quite convincingly. The Tigers kicked their only two goals in the first quarter, and failed to kick anymore after that; they had three of their four scoring shots in the first term alone. Kinglake, on the other hand, were fantastic and next to unstoppable. They may have started off slowly, but from the second quarter onwards, they were like dynamite, especially with Josh Nixon and Luke Thorneycroft kicking seven and five goals apiece. Glenn Murphy (1 goal), Damian Pywell (3 goals) and Mathew Thomas (3 goals) were also fantastic in their side’s win.Powelltown 9.13.67 def by Yarra Glen 15.8.98 The first half of football was played in tough conditions and only 3 points separated the 2 at half time. But once Yarra Glen put their foot on the accelerator, they left Powelltown behind. For the Demons it was a matter of inaccuracy that saw them fall behind, as both teams had approximately the same number shots on goal – and this win reinforces the fact that Yarra Glen is a side to beat this season. David Watt, Kyle Hudson and Cameron Tait were best for the visiting team in their win, as they were more willing to go harder into each contest.

Seville 4.3.27 def Yarra Junction 2.5.17 In a very low scoring game Seville just managed to beat Yarra Junction by ten points. There was 5 goals kicked in the first quarter and unfortunately for the Eagles they could only manage another 3 points for the game. Seville managed to get in front early, and it remained that way in a very mud-riddled affair. The last half of footy was a good old fashion wrestle in the mud with the footy being too heavy and too slippery for players to be able to make any impact on the scores. Christopher Mahlstedt (2 goals), Shane Senior and Shaun Wilson were Seville’s best.DIVISION 2 UNDER 18sAlexandra 11.6.72 def Belgrave 8.6.54 Despite not being able to kick a goal in the first quarter, Belgrave played the next three quarters very well to get themselves within three goals by the final siren. With Belgrave sitting just below them on the ladder, Alexandra knew they had to win this game, and they did so with grit and determiantion. Benjamin Wallis (1 goal), Jack Tossol and Ben Cooper were best for Alexandra, where they were first into every contest, and where their forwards were able to capitalise on all the hard work made by their teammates to give them the valuable four points.Kinglake – BYE Powelltown 1.1. 7 def by Yarra Glen 39.20.254 Yarra Glen has had a great 2012 season, and they continued in the same manner with a very good win over Powelltown. The young Demons struggled to get their hands on the footy, with Yarra Glen making it next to impossible for them to retain possession. Keeping their opponent to only one goal for the game’s entirety, Yarra Glen then went on to dominate the game in every aspect, where everything they touched turned to gold. Chris Moate (5 goals), William Goodwin (4 goals) and Ryan Smith (6 goals) were best for Yarra Glen.Seville – BYE

Top 10 Goal Kickers WordsearchDIVISION 2 SENIORSBelgrave vs PowelltownStill yet to be defeated after thirteen rounds of football, it’s hard to tip against Belgrave – especially when they’re doing everything right. With the last couple of spots in the top five being open to many, Powelltown will need to play at their very best if they hope to win – but in a game that will undoubtedly be very high-scoring, Belgrave will get on top and remain there. The forward lines of both teams will be the main interest here, but the Magpies will cause the most problems. Belgrave by five goals.

Yarra Glen vs kinglakeMaking a late surge towards finals, it will be fascinating to see how Kinglake will hold up against Yarra Glen, who is currently second on the ladder. Playing at Healesville will definitely provide an advantage for Yarra Glen, and if the weather has anything to do with it, both teams may have an extra opponent – whoever can adapt better to the conditions will come out on top. Yarra Glen’s forward line will cause multiple problems for Kinglake, and they will be the difference in whether the Glen win or lose. But I can’t look past Yarra Glen, who will win by three goals.

Yarra Junction vs AlexandraWith their position of fourth on the ladder at stake, Yarra Junction cannot afford to lose this match against Alexandra, who in turn is not very far off from fifth. And with both these teams coming off a loss, it will be fascinating to see how they will bounce back. Junction will have the advantage of playing at home, but Alexandra has been known to do the impossible, and they may as well do it in this game. Junction has been known to be slow starters, so if Alex can capitalise on this, they’re in with a chance. Alexandra in an upset by two goals.

Yea vs SevilleStill yet to win a game, how Yea will go against Seville is anybody’s guess. There have been glimpses of how good Yea can really be, but they haven’t been able to retain it over the course of four quarters – and their inconsistency will cost them against Seville. Speed will be an important factor in this match, and although Yea possesses plenty of it, their hesitation and decision-making has also let them down. And as much as I would like to see Yea win, they won’t be able to defeat Seville. The Blues by seventeen points.

DIVISION 2 UNDER 18sBelgrave vs PowelltownComing off a massive loss against Yarra Glen, Powelltown will be heading to Belgrave today to try to redeem themselves. The Demons has yet to win a game this year, but this could very much well be the round where it happens – unless Belgrave have a say in the final result, which they will. The Magpies are slowly closing in on third on the ladder, and a win here would definitely help in their crusade. As much as I would like to see Powelltown win this match, I don’t believe they will do so against such a good opponent. Belgrave by thirteen points.

Yarra Glen vs kinglakeWith a percentage-boosting performance against Powelltown last week, top spot is now open for Yarra Glen to steal it from Seville – it will all come down to percentage. But with Yarra Glen finally being rewarded for their efforts, top spot would be nothing short of amazing. Kinglake have had a mediocre kind of season, and it’s difficult to see them beating Yarra Glen at home when there’s so much at stake for Yarra Glen. So in saying this, Yarra Glen will simply be too strong for Kinglake, and will win by four goals.

Thirty years ago, the Yea Football Club won the first of its two YVMDFL Second Division flags. Yea originally joined in the YVMDFL in 1977 after winning the Waranga North East FL premiership the previous year. Competing in First Division in 1977, the Tigers lost their place in the Four when they went down to Upwey in the final round of the season. After such a promising start, Yea won only six games over the next three seasons and was relegated at the end of 1980. The Tigers ran fourth in Second Division in 1981, but fielded a much stronger side the following year.Yea began the 1982 season with seven straight wins before losing at Belgrave by 19 points. The Tigers responded by thrashing Marysville by 245 points the following week, but then suffered a 29 point loss at their bogey ground, Thornton. Six consecutive wins to end the home and away season resulted in Yea finishing on top of the ladder, a game clear of its main rival, Belgrave. A comfortable 15.20 to 8.11 win over the Magpies in the semi final at Marysville meant that Yea was a firm favourite for the flag. The grand final was held at Woori Yallock in front of a respectable crowd that paid $2589. The game started in unfortunate fashion when Yea half back, Malcolm Bett was struck over the eye in the first minute, and was taken away in an ambulance. The Magpies kicked the first goal, but Yea soon settled down, with Pat Coonan and Evans marking well in defence. Gorman kicked the Tigers’ first, but Belgrave then took the initiative and kicked out to a 15 point lead. Colin McLeish, who had replaced Bett, was also hit in the face and couldn’t take his kick. Ivey did take it, and passed to Rod McLeish for a good goal. Quinlan added another for Yea just before quarter time to reduce the deficit to three points. Belgrave had been on top during the quarter but had wasted several opportunities.A brilliant second quarter won the game for Yea. Steven Aldous kicked an early goal and Ivey found Vincent Dignam for another. Dignam then threaded though a banana goal and Yea was up

and away, with Trevor Aldous the best player afield. The Tigers were winning the ball out of the middle and dominating up forward. The Belgrave backline seemed to be in disarray, and the Tigers added goals from Dignam (3), Trevor Aldous, Steven Aldous and Guttridge. A ten goal quarter had Yea up by an imposing 42 points at the long break. The Magpies hit back in the third quarter to give themselves a chance of winning. Belgrave opened up its forward line and played a more direct brand of football. Steven Steele and Len Sutherland were moved onto the half forward line, and these moves worked well for Belgrave. Captain-coach Glen Murphy was easily Belgrave’s best player, with Danny Shaw, Bruce Painter, wingman Jim Walsh and ruckman Jeff Backman also performing well. The Magpies greatly increased their intensity and were able to kick five goals to two to reduce the margin to 26 points at the last change. R.Kerr was hurt during the quarter, reducing Yea to 17 men. Although kicking to the scoring end, Yea was under pressure early in the last term. Drysdale had been playing a great game, and he combined with Jorgensen and Ivey to hold Belgrave out. The Tigers then went forward for three consecutive behinds before Gorman passed to Vincent Dignam for a decisive goal. Belgrave continued to press, but they’d left themselves with too much to do. West handpassed to Quinlan, who snapped a clever left-foot goal to make the game quite safe, with Yea going on to win by 24 points. The result was a triumph for playing coach Richard Ivey, who had also coached Yea’s 1976 premiership side.Scores - 1982 Second division grand final Yea 4.1 14.5 16.11 18.17 (125) Belgrave 4.4 7.5 12.9 15.11 (101) Best players (Yea): T.Aldous, H.Drysdale, S.Aldous, R.Ivey, A.Evans, P.Coonan, G.Barker, V.Dignam. Keiko’s History1982 Second division grand finalYea v Belgrave

Circumstances leading to the formation of the YVMDFL.Part 1 - background

The Mountain District Football Association and the Yarra Valley Football League, forerunners to today’s YVMDFL, each enjoyed long and colourful histories over the first six and a half decades of last century. By the early 1960s, the YVFL in particular was beginning to struggle, having been reduced to six clubs in 1960-62. The reformation of the Woori Yallock club in 1963 increased the number of teams to seven, but the departure of Lilydale to the EDFL at the start of 1965 caused the League to consider its own future. That year the YVFL ran an eight team competition, having recalled Powelltown from B-grade and allowing Healesville to run a second A-grade team; the imaginatively named Healesville (2).

Meanwhile, the more stable MDFA had acquired some problems of its own. The recently-formed Eastern Districts Football League had launched an aggressive recruiting campaign, and several MDFA clubs were on its shopping list. As the EDFL was an unaffiliated body, clubs could transfer to it without a clearance. The Ferntree Gully and South Wantirna clubs applied to

leave the MDFA in February 1965 at a stormy association meeting. The MDFA executive recommended against clearing the clubs ‘in the interests of the association’, and in the event, only Upper Ferntree Gully and Gembrook voted to allow the two clubs to leave. Ferntree Gully delegates walked out of the meeting when their clearance was refused. South Wantirna and Ferntree Gully both announced that they intended to leave the association without a clearance, risking the suspension of all of their players from other competitions. Three weeks later, the Olinda-Ferny Creek club became the third club to apply to leave the MDFA. This was also refused by the MDFA, although the other clubs were sympathetic to Olinda’s application. In the end it was turned down in ‘a last-ditch effort to maintain the strength of the association’. It wasn’t long before Olinda announced that they were also leaving without a clearance, meaning that only seven MDFA clubs remained. The association tried and failed in a recruiting drive of its own. By July 1965, the first suggestions of a possible merger were aired, with a tentative approach to the MDFA by the YVFL.

Next week - negotiations break down

Keiko’s History Part 1

Healesville and Warburton battle it out at Yarra Junction in the second semi final of 1965 - the last YVFL season.

In preliminary discussions held in July/August 1965, all MDFA clubs agreed in principle with an amalgamation with the YVFL, although it was noted that many problems needed to be ironed out before anything could eventuate.

A special delegates meeting was held on 7 September to discuss the proposed merger. Hopes for the venture to succeed were dashed when three of the seven MDFA clubs voted against the proposal, while a fourth abstained. Belgrave, Monbulk and Gembrook all supported the move, Emerald abstained from voting, and Upper Ferntree Gully, South Belgrave and Upwey-Tecoma voted down the amalgamation. Earlier, delegates had determined that a two-thirds majority (i.e. five out of seven) would need to vote in favour for acceptance of the move. Representatives of the YVFL were also in attendance at the meeting, and on hearing the result, YVFL president Mr. Geo. Sutherland said that he was extremely disappointed, saying that he could see both bodies being ‘swallowed up’ by the EDFL in no time. Mr. Sutherland indicated that all YVFL clubs were enthusiastically in favour of the merger, and the Marysville club had no worries about the extra travelling involved, as they already travelled quite significant distances every second week. One of the obstacles to the amalgamation was that the YVFL belonged to the Victorian Country Football League, while the MDFA were affiliated with the Victorian Football Union. MDFA clubs were concerned that the new body should stay with the VFU to enjoy its generous player insurance benefit scheme. The main objection though, as ever, was travel. The Upper Ferntree Gully club was most strongly opposed to the merger, as it claimed that it had the most to lose. With under-cover spectator facilities available at the MCG, ‘only 30 minutes away by electric train’ (the trains must have run much faster in those days!), Upper Gully surmised that they would lose even more support if they were expected to travel further. The UFTG coach, ‘Tiger’ Lawson

had also threatened to resign if the merger went ahead. The Belgrave club won plaudits after its president explained that it had put association in front of club in voting for the proposal. In its opinion, there was no alternative to the move to keep the association strong. South Belgrave opposed the amalgamation because of the extra travelling required. The Emerald delegates did not exercise their voting rights. They had been instructed to vote ‘No’ at the club’s meeting the previous night, but judged that additional information supplied by YVFL officials may have changed the club’s point of view. Upwey-Tecoma gave no indication of its attitude until the vote, and did not give any reason for opposing the vote. Private enquiries later revealed that Upwey had decided to put itself in front of the association as it was regaining its feet after a period of turmoil. The three demurring clubs were severely criticised in the local press for voting down the proposal, and the MDFA vice-president, Mr. R. Matthews remarked that if the association lost another club it ‘may just as well shut up its shop’.

Next week - a change of heart

Keiko’s History Part 2

Circumstances leading to the formation of the YVMDFL.Part 2 - a failure to come to termsLast week - the struggling YVFL proposes a merger with the embattled MDFA.

Monbulk are at home to Belgrave midway through the

last MDFA season, 1965.

Last week - on 7 September 1965, MDFA clubs voted against a proposed merger with the YVFL.

In the aftermath of the lost vote, it was pointed out to clubs worried about a drop in gates or extra travelling that the following of YVFL clubs was far greater than that of MDFA clubs, and that roads in the Yarra Valley were far superior to those in the Dandenongs. It was also noted for the record that the YVFL had made the first approach to the Mountain District, and would be willing to join under any reasonable conditions. At this stage, the proposed merger between the two leagues appeared to be dead in the water. By October, though, the mood had changed, with the suggestion that some of the opposed MDFA clubs might be coming around. In November, it was noted that officials from the MDFA were in attendance at the YVFL annual dinner, and the YVFL secretary was expressing the hope that the MDFL and the YVFL would become ‘good friends’ in the future. The YVFL annual meeting was held on 6 February 1966, but any serious discussion on the future of the competition had to wait until the MDFA clubs reconsidered their decision on the merger. The MDFA met on 11 February, and the clubs were given eleven days to consider the seven conditions under which the MDFA would agree to a marriage with the YVFL:

1. That all YV clubs must field an under 16 team, with these games to be played as curtain-raisers to the firsts.

2. When playing Marysville, MD clubs would have the right to request that the game be played at a nearer ground.

3. That the YVFL join the MDFA.

4. That the absorption be for a two-year trial period.

5. The MDFA remain affiliated with the VFU.

6. The YVFL and MDFA have equal representation on the new league administration.

7. That MDFA clubs agree to the absorption by a 6 out of 7 majority.

It is interesting to note points 3 and 4. Obviously the MDFA clubs considered it important that it be known that the YVFL was joining the MDFA, rather than the merger being a marriage of two equal partners.

In the days after the release of these seven conditions, the South Belgrave club made the surprise announcement that it was now in agreement with the amalgamation. Emerald delegates also said that their club was in favour of the move. It looked like the vote was going to end up 5-2, but the turning point came when Upper Ferntree Gully decided that they were leaving the MDFA to join the EDFL. Upwey-Tecoma then dropped their opposition and the vote was carried unanimously at the MDFA delegates meeting on 22 February 1966. With only weeks remaining before the start of the season, six executives from each competition met at Woori Yallock on the following Sunday to thrash out the details of the new competition. At that conference, it was determined that the new league would be known as the Mountain District and Yarra Valley Football League, that there would be twelve senior teams (six from each of the former leagues), a second eighteen competition, and an under-sixteen competition. The MDYVFL would have two presidents, two secretaries, and a composite committee of 24 - 12 from the YVFL and 12 from the MDFA. The Powelltown club was given permission to field its senior team in the second eighteen competition, while Emerald, Millgrove and Marysville would not field seconds teams. Delegates meetings would be held in the two territories alternately, and the tribunal would meet at Belgrave. The VFA would supply A grade field umpires, and the MDFA umpires association would provide A grade goal umpires and B grade field umpires. Admission to grounds would be 40c for adults, and 20c for children.

Next week - MDYVFL Round 1, 16 April 1966.

Last week - the MDYVFL was formed on 22 February 1966.

Fixturing for the new league caused a few problems. The MDYVFL determined that Gembrook, Healesville and Belgrave should all be at home in round 1 so that they could unfurl their respective premiership flags from 1965 (Belgrave had won the under 16 competition.). Another condition was that the Mountain District would host three matches each week, and the Yarra Valley would host the other three. To make it even more complicated, clubs in close proximity (for example, Belgrave and South Belgrave, Millgrove and Warburton) would not be drawn at home on the same day, to ensure that there was always one home match in each area on any given day. That was all very well, but it meant that Belgrave ended up with eight home matches and ten away matches, and they weren’t too happy about that. (Note that in First Division on 19 May 2012, the Mountain District clubs were all at home, and the Yarra Valley clubs were all away – obviously geography no longer plays a part in the fixturing.)

The opening round was scheduled for 16 April 1966, and the official fixture was:

Healesville v Emerald

Upwey-Tecoma v Monbulk

Gembrook v Yarra Junction

Warburton v Sth. Belgrave

Belgrave v Millgrove

Woori Yallock v Marysville

On a perfect Autumn day, Healesville unfurled the 1965 YVFL pennant at Queens Park in front of a very healthy crowd. In a bruising encounter, the Bloods were much too strong for Emerald, and won 9.16 to 3.11. Collis was best on ground at full

back for the home side, while Bellette and John Haag did well for Emerald.

Marysville failed to impress at Woori Yallock. The visitors found it difficult to play with any system, and the Tigers powered away in the second half to win 15.9 to 9.8.

After a scrambly first half at Belgrave, the taller and heavier home side asserted themselves in the second half against Millgrove. Although ‘Grove full back, Soster was best afield in Belgrave’s 11.8 - 7.9 victory, the Magpies were too good and won comfortably. Price kicked five goals for Belgrave.

Gembrook unfurled the MDFA premiership flag, and then had a good battle with Yarra Junction. In a high standard affair, the Junction played their spectacular high-marking and long-kicking brand of football, while Gembrook successfully used their fast, play-on style in a 19.9 - 10.12 win for the ‘Brooks.

Despite missing several top players, Warburton defeated South Belgrave, 12.11 to 7.13. Upwey showed that they had improved greatly on 1965, with a 13.15 to 10.13 home win over Monbulk.

kinglake [43] def Yea [26]

Registering their fourth win of the season, Kinglake did so by beating Yea in front of their home crowd. At times the Yea looked like they had the Lakers on their toes, but they were unable to remain consistent. Alex Mercuri (33 goals), Rebekah Harvey, Casey Barnes and Natasha Skehan in particular relishing in the freedom they had around the court. Yea have still to win their first game of the season, and they weren’t going to this round as they couldn’t stop the influence of Kinglake’s goallers.

Powelltown [34] def by Yarra Glen [45]

Currently sitting third on the ladder, Yarra Glen further cemented their spot in the top five with a convincing win over Powelltown. The run and carry through the centre court was what put the home side on the back foot, as well as the shooting prowess of the visiting team’s goallers. Powelltown proved to be inaccurate in comparison to Yarra Glen, who barely missed whenever they put a shot up – this Yarra Glen’s willingness to go hard and fast into each contest was what got them the overall four points. Tarryn Thom (32 goals), Elizabeth Kay (13 goals), Stacey Moate and Tori Smedley were Yarra Glen’s best.

Seville [35] def Yarra Junction [21]

Sitting pretty on top of the ladder, Seville, played host to Yarra Junction at the weekend. The Blues have had a fantastic year, and this game proved to be no different. Seville’s defenders were stand-outs in this game, where they prevented Junction’s goallers from being as influential on the game as they usually are. The run and carry from Seville’s defence through to their goallers was done very well, as they

were too fast for the Eagles. Emily Read, Riley Gentle, Stacey Bell and Tania Hoare were Seville’s best in their eleventh win of the season.

dIVISION 1 A GrAdE NETBALL

Emerald [40] def Monbulk [37]

After losing last week to Olinda Ferny Creek, Emerald are back on the winners list with a close win over Monbulk – this now sees the Bombers fifth on the ladder. It was a very to-and-fro kind of game, with the lead changing numerous times – and it was a defenders kind of game, with those of both teams starring for their respective sides. But when the game was to be won, Emerald managed to get on top, with Samantha Coller, Brooke Maher (27 goals), Meagan Baguley and Nicole Argoon stepping up when they needed to.

Healesville – BYE

Mount Evelyn [59] def Olinda Ferny Creek [23]

Registering their first win of the season last week, Olinda Ferny Creek would have loved to have made it two in a row – but with their next opponent being Mount Evelyn, that was not going to happen. And with the weather being less than pleasant, it didn’t affect the performances of the home side at all – they instead incorporated this into their game and the rain didn’t hinder them. Olinda looked sluggish in comparison, with their passing letting them down and Mount Evelyn capitalising on their hesitation. Sarah Hogan, Rachael Hickey (29 goals), Gaby Duncan and Morgan Brumby were Mount Evelyn’s best.

Upwey Tecoma [82] def Woori Yallock [32]

Upwey Tecoma enjoyed a fantastic win over their opponent – and in a move that surprised many but worked out great by the home side, Krista Tomlinson played in goals, and shot a staggering sixty goals in

a stand-out performance. Woori could do nothing to match this or the excellence of Upwey’s other players, with Tess Linkins, Natalie Montanari and Riley McLoughlin also playing well and creating much of the play. The two Upwey goallers proved to be a headache for Woori, being next to unstoppable.

Wandin [49] def Warburton Millgrove [27]

Wandin went on to further cement their place in the top five with another convincing win. The Doggies were fantastic, with their shooters causing numerous problems for their direct opponent. Wandin were quick off the mark, and they gave Warby next to no room to move whenever the ball came down their end; they made timely intercepts, and they were great in timing their rebounds. Lauren Close, Melissa Martinov (26 goals), Courtney McDonald (17 goals) and Kathleen McMahon were deemed Wandin’s best, in a match where not much could go wrong.

dIVISION 2 A GrAdE NETBALL

Alexandra [42] def by Belgrave [58]

Continuing on with their stand-out season, Belgrave travelled to Alexandra at the weekend. The MAgpiesproved to be too strong from the outset, causing multiple problems for Alexandra across the court. Alexandra, for a while, stood toe-to-toe with their opponent, but they couldn’t retain the pressure, and instead crumbled beneath the pressure Belgrave exerted. And with Kara Salmon (37 goals), Tayla Davison-Armao (21 goals) and Kristen Robinson playing well, Belgrave never looked like they were going to lose. This win sees Belgrave still sitting second on the ladder, and with Alex sitting fifth.

Top 10 Goal ShootersdIVISION 2 A GrAdE NETBALL

Belgrave vs Powelltown

Sitting just outside the top five, Powelltown must win their next few matches if they hope to play finals this season; but playing against Belgrave and taking home the four points may prove to be a bit difficult for them. The Magpies has barely put a foot wrong this season, and when their whole team plays well, they get on top and remain that way. Powelltown’s goallers have been very accurate this season, but will it be enough to get them over the line? I’m tipping Belgrave to win this match by eight goals.

Yarra Glen vs kinglake

Kinglake are going to find it difficult at trying to beat Yarra Glen. But they haven’t had a bad few weeks, and this may favour them. However, they will need to get the better of Yarra Glen’s goallers, who barely miss whenever they put a shot up, and the speed their defenders and centre court players move the ball when they’re coming out from defence. The transition from defence to attack has proven to be Yarra Glen’s biggest strength, and it will pay off against when they host Kinglake. Yarra Glen by thirteen goals.

Yarra Junction vs Alexandra

Yarra Junction has had a great season thus far, and they will continue to do so when they play host to Alexandra today. The Eagles have been known to be slow starters, but once they get going, they’re very difficult to stop, especially their shooters. Alexandra has quick centre court players, with the highlight of this game being between theirs and Junction’s. This game will be a tight one, where Junction won’t get on top until well into the last

quarter. The home side by seven or eight goals.

Yea vs Seville

Unfortunately for Yea, who has yet to win a game this season, they won’t be doing so against Seville, even though they are playing at home. Seville has had another great season, and they surely won’t look to drop another game with finals in only a month. Yea will put up a fight for most of this match, but Seville will get on top and their defenders will get the better of the Tiger’s goallers to give the visiting side a handy lead. Seville will win this game by nine or so goals.
