CONSTRUCTION FOCUS NOVEMBER 2018 On Thursday, November 6, CASF honored 46 South Florida craftsmen with its coveted Craftsmanship Award. The 2018 awards mark the 60th straight year CASF has recognized the region’s most skilled artisans for their exceptional work in a wide variety of categories segmented by CSI codes. Each winning craftsman was recognized on-stage and presented with a customized award. In addition, CASF presented commemorative plaques to each craftsman’s employer. In keeping with the high standards it celebrates, the CASF Craftsmanship Awards are marked by a rigorous judging process. It begins with an extensive application and vetting. Then, each project is visited by a three-person judge’s panels composed of a general contractor, architect and engineer. Six judges’ panels blanket South Florida to ensure each project is subject to an on-site inspection. All the judges then meet to review each project and vote on winners by category. If no project achieves the required level of excellence, no winner in that category is announced for that year. At last year’s event, the physical award was officially renamed the John E. Custer Craftsmanship Award, or “The Custer.” Custer was charter CASF member, and the award was renamed in his honor to recognize his decades-long contribution to putting on and promoting the CASF Craftsmanship Awards. In addition to selecting individual winners to receive a 2018 Custer, this year’s judges awarded two overall project awards. Structural Roof Systems and Coastal Construction Group were recognized for delivering the Residential Project of the Year. CASF presented its 2018 Award for Overall Craftsmanship in a Commercial Project to the Paramount. The 18-story luxury tower was recently completed by Stiles Construction Company. The Paramount is the first new high-rise built on Fort Lauderdale beach in more than a decade. A number of craftsman won individual awards at the Paramount, and the judges noted the consistent level of high- quality work throughout the project.
