Conservation… ForeverWe protect land, water, wildlife habitat and recreation opportun­ities for the communities of northwest Hancock County—in perpetuity. This responsibility depends on the Trust’s long­term financial stability.

Making a gift to GPMCT through planned giving creates a lasting legacy for our community and the way of life here. It can also provide tax benefits for you or your family. A planned gift can be made during your lifetime or through an estate plan.

We have several individuals and families in the Stuart M. Gross Legacy Circle who’ve let us know that they’ve included GPMCT in their estate plans. Bequests are an easy way to give; naming your favorite non­profit as the beneficiary of an IRA is another way to donate after you’re gone, and may be tax­free! Funds can be donated for general operations, specific projects, or endowment.

2020Annual Report

Kurt and his wife, Robyn, recently retired from an orthod ontics practice in Highland Park, Illinois and

decided to escape the rat race of the Chicago suburbs. In June 2018, on a visit to friends in Surry, they fell in love with Maine. Two days later, they bought a home on Toddy Pond. Kurt and Robyn consider it their primary residence and plan to live there year­round and pursue their interest in conservation.

Kurt’s love for nature was cultivated early in life by his older brother, a marine biologist who is currently the executive director of the Elkhorn Slough Foundation in Watsonville, California, a non­profit conservation orga­nization. He grew up in northern California and gradu­ated from California State University at Chico with a degree in biology (emphasis on herpetology); he received his DDS from the University of Southern California. Kurt told the board, “I am honored to join the board of the Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust to which I hope to make a useful contribution while pursuing my passion for the outdoors.”

Chris Johnson Receives 2020 Volunteer of the Year Award

The 25/25 Campaign celebrating the 25th anniversary of GPMCT wrapped up in 2019 with over 70 donors and exceeded its goal, raising just over $58,000.These funds strengthened our general en dow ment and long term land stewardship funds. Thank you !

Chris Johnson was honored as Volunteer of the Year at the Annual Meeting in August.

Chris grew up in Bucksport, has volunteered for many local organizations and was a key player in Bucksport’s Heart and Soul project. Once he joined the board of the Trust, he threw himself into the work. He was critical to our re­accreditation process, to the large task of transi­tioning all the organization’s files to the cloud and to realizing other technology opportunities for the Trust. He serves as chair of two committees and is actively en­gaged in every aspect of the organization. Chris is also a member of the Maine Woodland Owners, the Bucksport Historical Society and the Penobscot County Genealogi­cal Society. Chris and Karen Johnson live in north Buck­sport. Thank you Chris!

In 2009 Bob Mushrall received the first award that came with a physical object that Cheri Domina made. She remembers, “I suggested we pass it on each year, but Bob said ‘Nope, I'm keeping that,’ and I didn't argue. He deserved it.” The award resurfaced this year when Mar­sha Mushrall was reducing possessions. She brought it to Chris Johnson, not knowing he is the current volunteer of the year. Order has been restored and we will wrest it back from Chris at the end of his term . . . or not.
