The Importance Of Being A Chamber Member

Did you now that chambers of commerce have been in existence for centuries? According to Wikipedia, the first chamber was founded in 1599 in Marseille, France. Another official chamber of commerce would follow 65 years later, it’s thought to be in Bruges, then part of the Spanish Netherlands. The world’s oldest English-speaking chamber of commerce is the Jersey Chamber founded in February 1768.

The great football Coach, Vince Lombardi, once said, “Individual effort to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” And it is certainly what makes the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce work!

The Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1919, and since then has been “meeting the challenges” and “shaping the future” by serving the business community with great fortitude, tirelessly promoting economic growth, supporting the advancement of education and much more. Your chamber also serves as an advocate on government issues important to local business by monitoring local, state and federal legislation. The organization gives you a voice on what happens in government through its advocacy efforts.

Membership in the local chamber is considered to be essential for any business, no matter whether the company is big or small. The size really doesn’t matter … what matters is recognizing the benefit and importance of chamber membership and all the opportunities membership offers a company. For example, as a DACC member you are part of the largest business advocate in this area. Your membership benefits include:

• Networking – Make important business connections at quarterly membership meetings and networking events like the Business Connections, and members-only LEADS groups. Who you know really does make a difference. Networking = customer development.

• Small Business Development – Representatives from the Small Business Development Center at Troy University are available each month for free and confidential counseling sessions.

• Benefits and Discounts – Save money on supplies, travel, hotels, landscaping, appliances and more through the DACC’s Member-To-Member Discount Program. Visit www.dothan.com/MembertoMemberProgram for more information.

• Learning Opportunities – Throughout the year the DACC hosts seminars of interest to business owners, entrepreneurs and nonprofits.

• Educational Partnership – Through a partnership with Troy University, members and their full-time employees are eligible to receive a 10 percent scholarship on tuition costs, as well as to Troy’s Corporate Achieve Scholarship which provides full-time employees pursing

an undergraduate degree up to four free classes, and those pursing a graduate degree, up to three free classes. For more information, call Abbey Richards, director of enrollment, at (334) 983-6556, ext. 21228 or [email protected].

• Referrals – On a daily basis, the DACC receives dozens of requests for the names of businesses in the Dothan-Houston County area who offer specific goods and services for purchase. The DACC refers these callers to Chamber members only.

• Community Improvement Projects - Building existing business, recruiting new jobs and marketing the Wiregrass area are three ways the DACC works to strengthen our economy. With over 1,100 members, the DACC is committed to sustaining the growth and prosperity of the region.

• Business and Technology Expo – Attend the DACC’s annual Spotlight on Business Trade Show, Dothan’s only business-to-business trade show. Booth space is only available to members.

• Publicity - Members receive publicity and heightened name recognition through the DACC print, internet and event exposure.

• Credibility - Chamber membership demonstrates your commitment to the community by being a part of the vision and strategies of the largest, strongest and most active business organization in the Dothan Area – the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce.

The above list is only a handful of the reasons why chamber membership is important. For a more detailed list, visit the “Events and Services” page on the DACC’s website at www.dothan.com/EventsandServices.

You are a valuable part of this great community that we all live, work and play in. You can take pride in knowing that with your membership you are part of an organization that works to serve the community and you, its members.

If you would like more information, or have questions about Chamber membership or how you can get more involved, contact Hayden Camp, director of membership, at (334) 792-5138 or [email protected].

WOOF AM/FM is proud to announce that its very own Leigh Simpson and Deborah Pearson will be two out of the six individuals to be inducted into the Alabama Broadcasters Association 2021 Hall of Fame.

Celebrating 75 years, the ABA each year inducts individuals into the Hall of Fame who have made great contributions to the broadcast community over the course of their careers.

Simpson, whose family signed on WOOF-AM in 1947 and added the FM in 1964, has worked at the stations since 1982. She became president and general manager after her mother’s retirement and filled that roll until the stations were sold in late 2020. She devoted her career to the keeping the stations :local: with live programing 24 hours a day and creating a broadcast “family” among the staff.

Pearson is a veteran journalist who has spent three decades telling the stories of the people of the Wiregrass from the studios of WOOF. In 1995, she did “double duty,” as she hosted a talk show on WDHN-TV and continued in her role at WOOF. She started her broadcast career at Alabama State University on WVAS-FM.

The Inductions will also include the following individuals and the Broadcaster of the Year, who will be named at the Saturday, Aug. 14, luncheon event in Birmingham:1. Gordon Edwards Burns, known as “Country

Boy Eddie” on Birmingham’s WBRD-TV; 2. A. G. Gaston (1892-1996), owner of

WENN-FM and WAGG-AM; and3. James Clifton Homes Jr. (1929-2008),

known as “Cousin Cliff” on Birmingham’s WABT-TV (now WVTM).A BIG shout out to both Simpson and

Pearson for serving and sharing their talents with the Wiregrass area. For more information, contact WOOF AM/FM at (334) 792-1149 or visit www.woofradio.com.

Southeast AlabamaWorks is pleased to announce its role in coordinating the regional efforts of the Alabama Workforce Stabilization Program funded through the U.S. Department of Education RWP CARES Act – CFDA84-425G. Each of the seven regional workforce councils will support their respective business and industry communities by partnering with the community colleges and career centers to develop customized training for new and existing employees.

There will be five key industry sectors targeted: Advanced Manufacturing, Construction, Healthcare, Information Technology, and Transportation, Distribution, Logistics. Two main goals of this program exist to provide opportunities for employees and employers alike. • Goal 1 is to provide short-term education and training programs

to 7,080 Alabama workers displaced by Covid-19; specifically, 567 participants are sought for education and training within the ten

counties served by Southeast AlabamaWorks; and• Goal 2 is to assist small businesses of less than 500 employees to avoid

layoffs, upskill current employees, and develop talent pipelines for current and future needs. Each AWSP will provide individuals an opportunity to earn college

credit and industry-recognized credentials in one of the five targeted business sectors. For those who are unemployed, job-matching with participating companies can lead to employment starting at $12+ an hour.

For participating employers, the AWSP will subsidize $9 of OJT wages of participants earning $12 per hour or more for up to 225 hours. Employers will receive a total of $2,025 wage reimbursement for each new hire who completes the 225 on-the-job training programs. For employers who wish to upskill their existing employees, grant funding may be available to offset the cost of training.
