thatcanbecounted,counts.”-AlbertEinsteinWithbusylives,itcanbehardtofindtimetovolunteer.However,

thebenefitsofvolunteeringareenormoustoyou,yourfamily,andyourcommunity.Therightmatchcanhelpyouformnewfriendships,reachouttoyourcommunity,learnnewskills,andevenadvanceyourcareer.Volunteeringcanalsohelpprotectyourmentalandphysicalhealth.

Oneofthebetter-knownbenefitsofvolunteeringistheimpactonthecommunity.Unpaidvolunteersareoftenthegluethatholdsacommunitytogether.Volunteeringallowsyoutoconnecttoyourcommunityandmakeitabetterplace.Evenhelpingoutwiththesmallesttaskscanmakearealdifferencetothelivesofpeople,animals,andorganizationsinneed.Andvolunteeringisatwo-waystreet:Itcanbenefityouandyourfamilyasmuchasthecauseyouchoosetohelp.Dedicatingyourtimeasavolunteerhelpsyoumakenewfriends,expandyournetwork,andboostyoursocialskills.

Manypeoplevolunteerinordertomaketimeforhobbiesoutsideofworkaswell.Forinstance,ifyouhaveadeskjobandlongtospendtimeoutdoors,youmightconsidervolunteeringtohelpplantacommunitygarden,walkdogsforananimalshelter,orhelpoutatachildren’scamp.

NexttimeyouhaveamealatMt.RushmoreNationalMemorialortheRegionalHospitalinRapidCity,youmaybeenjoyingproducethatwasraisedrighthereinSpearfishValley!Asyoumaysuspect,thisdidn’thappenovernight,andthestartofthisexcitingdevelopmentbeganbackinMayof2014.

Spearfish Local

Nearlytwoyearsago,KatieGreer(BlackHillsStateUniversityAssistantDirectorofFacilities)andIkickedoffSpearfishLocal,acampaigntopromoteandsupportourlocalfoodeconomy.ThroughagrantfromtheWellmarkFoundation,SpearfishLocalheldalocalfoodcelebrationatBHSUthatwasopentothepublic.Alltheproducewasraisedlocally,andthecafeteriaevenmadeallthebunsfromscratch!Weservedover400mealsthatnight.Therewereweeonesandgrandmasandeveryoneinbetween–itwasareallycommunityevent.

TheWellmarkgrantalsofundedstudentinternstosupportHillsHorizon(thenonprofitthatmanagesthefarmers’marketandthecommunitygarden).TheinternthatassistedHillsHorizonhelpedtotakesurveysattheFarmersMarketandmaintainthecommunitygarden.Wewerealsoabletoplaceinternsattwolocalproducers:CycleFarm(inSpearfish)andBelleJoli’(localgrapegrowerandwinemaker).AbigailMcBrideworkedwithCycleFarmandlearnedaboutplanningandmanagingafarm,aswellassustainableandorganicapproachestobuildingandgrowingfood.TaraPrice,amasscommunicationsmajor,wasplacewithBelleJoli’tolearnabouttheirnewSparklinHouseinSturgisandtohelpwithnewslettersandothercommunication.TaraPricealsohelpedwiththeBHSUgarden.A’viands,thecompanythatmanagestheBHSUcafeteria,servesproduceharvestedintheBSHUgarden.TheWellmarkFoundationalsofundedthedevelopmentoftheSpearfishLocalAdvisoryCouncil.Localfoodrequiresproducers,consumers,andthemeanstoconnectthem,andtheAdvisoryCouncilhelpsdevelop

strategicareasoffocus.MembersoftheAdvisoryCouncilinclude:SpearfishMayorDanaBoke,SpearfishPublicWorksdirectorCherylJohnson,ChamberofCommercedirectorMelissaBarth,NutritionistRebeccaDorsett,ProfessorandBusyMomCarrieGray-Wood,BusinesswomanDawnHabeck,andFarmerTrishJenkins.ArecentadditiontotheCouncilisPetrikaPeters,thenewSustainabilityCoordinatoratBHSU.

AsafollowingtotheWellmarkgrant,weappliedforandreceivedaSpecialtyCropBlockGrantfromtheSouthDakotaDepartmentofAgriculture.Thisgrantpaidforawidevarietyofactivities.OneofourfavoriteswasbringingelementarystudentstoCycleFarmtolearnaboutthedifferencebetweenfreshandmanufacturedfood.TrishJenkinsandJeremySmith

wereamazingandgracioushosts,anditwasajoytoheartheirfarmfilledwiththelaughter

ofdozensofchildren.StudentsEvanGriggs(OutdoorEducationmajor)andJessieClark(OutdoorEducationandEnvironmentalBiologydoublemajor)developedandconductedtheprogramsinconjunctionwithTrishandJeremy.

ThegrantalsofundedagraduatestudentfromBHSU’sMasterofSustainabilityprogramtodevelopafoodshedanalysis.Afoodshedisawayof

analyzingwhereourlocalfoodisgrownandhowitflowstoconsumers.

TracySigdestadledthateffortandisnowreleasingherfindingsandmapsasshe

preparestograduate.Wealsocontinuedtoplaceinternswithlocal

producers.Oneofthestudents,MarisaKritzberger,wantedtotryherhandatherownfarmaftercompletingherinternship.MichelleandRickGrosek(theownersofBearButteGardens)havehelpedher getstarted.

OneoftheexcitingaspectsofSpearfishLocalwasaprogramtorecognizethoselocalbusinessesthatselllocallygrownfoodandbeerandwinewithlocallygrownhopsandgrapes.Youmayhaveseenthestickersonwindowsaroundtown!Thesestickershelpconsumers,bothcitizensandvisitors,knowwheretofindlocalfoodanddrink.Accountingmajor,ChorNi

TheSpecialtyCropBlockGrantalsoprovidedfundstocreatea‘KnowYourFarmer’videoseries.Althoughstillindevelopment,thisserieswillprovideafunandeducationalwaytogettoknowthefarmersthatareinourcommunities.Amasscommunicationstudent,TimothyWhalen,createdthefirstintheseriesaboutSunriseHives,anapiaryinSt.Onge.AnotherpromotionalaspectofSpearfishLocalistosharethestoryofourlocalfarmingcommunity.LinaKatelaite,amasscommunicationmajor,craftedstoriesfortheJacketJournalandBHSUMediawebsite.

RossEdison(EnvironmentalSciencemajor)helpedplanandmanagetheBHSUgardeninthespringandsummerof2015.Heorganizedvolunteerstohelpplant,weed,andharvest,aswellasstartedan‘adoptarow’program,wheregroupswouldcomeinandtakecareofacertainvegetableorareaofthegarden.

The Food Hub

Throughoutthisfirstyear,webeganthinkingabouthowwecouldgetlocalfoodtomorepeople.Wethoughtthatifwecouldgetlocalfoodintocafeteriasinhospitalsornursinghomesoruniversities,then

evenmorepeoplewouldhavetheopportunitytotrylocalfoodandbenefitfromitsnutritionalvalue.Itwouldalsogivethelocalfarmersanewwaytosellallthedeliciousfoodtheygrow.WeappliedforaLocalFoodPromotionProgramgrant(throughtheUSDepartmentofAgriculture).ThisgrantwouldfundthecreationandmanagementoftheBlackHills FoodHub.

Afoodhubtakestheproducefrommanyfarms,addsitalltogether,andthensellsittocustomers.Thisallowssomefarmerstospecializeinafewcropsthattheyprefertogrow(suchasheritagetomatoes)ortohaveavenue

forsalesthattheyotherwisewouldnothave.WereceivedthegrantinOctober2015.Westarted

byspeakingtoproducersaboutwhattheywouldbegrowingandwhattheywouldliketocontributetothefoodhub.Someproducerswillofferalotofproduceandsomewillofferaless,butitisalotoffoodwhenalladdedtogether.

Next,wereachedouttoXanterra(thefoodservicemanagersatMt.RushmoreNationalMemorial)andRapidCityRegionalHospital.Xanterra,whohadalreadybeenseekinglocalfoodsources,andRegionalHealthareeagertostartreceivinglocallygrownfoodassoonastheseasonallows.

Farmsthatarecurrentlysigneduptoparticipateinclude:BearButteGardens(Sturgis),CycleFarm(Spearfish),DarelAnderson(Wall),DCGardens(RapidCity),ElkCreekFoods(Wall),IfRanch(Newell),LookoutGardens(Spearfish),MoonriseMountainRanch(Spearfish),OwlCreekOrganics(Arpan),andPeterson’sRockyRidgeGardens(RapidCity).Additionalproducersarewelcome!

Food Hub Grows Out ofSpearfish Local


OnawarmSpringdayinJune1876,amidthestampedeofminerswho’dcometothenewlyestablishedtownofDeadwoodtodigforgold,findtheirfortunesandlivetheirdreams,W.A.McLaughlinandA.W.MerrickfoundedTheBlackHillsWeeklyPioneer.

Thearea’sfirstnewspaperreportedthat“Bustleandconfusionwasprevalenteverywhere.Eachdayandalmosteachhourwitnessedthearrivalofgreaterorlesspartiesofgoldseekerswho,findingsomeeligiblelocationtocorraltheirwagonsorpitchtheirtents,immediatelymixedwiththethrongandbecameone ofus.”

Becoming“oneofus”oronewiththecommunity,wasthegoaloftheBlackHillsPioneer140yearsago.Anditremainsthepublication’sfocusinthe21stcentury,sayspublisherLettiLister.

“Ifeellikeit’sacriticalpartofthecommunity,”sheobserves.“Wetakeourobligationstoinformandeducateandplaywatchdogvery…veryseriously.Andalsotocelebratethepositivethingsthathappen.

ListeristhefirstfemalepublisherintheBlackHillsPioneer’shistory.It’sapositionshedoesn’ttakelightly,butalsodoesn’tstressover.

“It’sanhonor,”sheexplains.“Ifeelprivilegedtobeabletodothat.Idon’treallythinkaboutitotherthanI’mgladI’vebeenabletohelpbreakthatbarrier,ifyouwanttocallitabarrier.”

Herbiggestconcern,saysLister,ismakingsurethePioneerservesthecommunity–whetherthatmeans

highlightingthepositiveworkateacherisdoinginoneofthelocalschoolsorgoinghead-to-headwithaseriousissueandthoseinvolvedinit.

“Rightdowntomadeenemiesofgovernmentfiguresbecauseofthingstheirfamilyhavedone,”recallsLister.“Andwe’vecalledtoaskthemifthey’dliketocommentonitand…we’vehadreaderscallandtell

HandlingdifficultstoriesisnothingnewfortheBlackHillsPioneer.FromthetragedyoftheWoundedKneeMassacre,totheKiefferbrotherscattlerustlingincidentandtheBelleFourchebankrobbery,tothedestructionofthe7thCavalryattheLittleBighorn,this“smalltown”newspaperhasalonghistoryoftackling seriousissues.

CarolynWeberisExecDirectorofDeadwoodHistoryIncorporated.

“OneofthemostimportantactsinthefederalgovernmentwastheMajorCrimesActandthatwasestablishedasaresultoftheSpottedTailMurder,”explainsWeber.“HewasmurderedbyCrowDogandthatledtotheMajorCrimesAct…thecaseofhismurderdid.SowhathappenedrighthereinourlocalcommunityhadaneffectontheentirenationandhowlawisnowinterpretedfortheNativeAmericanpeople onreservations.”

Asonewhoseesnewspapersashavinganimmediateconnectionandroleintheircommunity,Weberaddsthatthisisevenmoreevidentinasmall townarea.

“Newspapersarereallykindofatimecapsuleofwhatwashappeningatacertaintimeinacertainplace,”commentsWeber.“Andeverythingfromeditorialstothesocialevents…topoliticsand

Andinspiteofthe2008economicdebacleandthetrendofnewspapersturningofftheirpressestheBlackHillsPioneernotonlycontinuestoprintbuthasgrownitscirculationtotalsoverthelast6years.

Askedwhathersecretis,LettiListerpointstoeverythingfromdiversificationtofocusingonlocalstoriesfirsttokeepingtypostoa

minimum.ButamajorpartoftheBlackHillsPioneer’ssuccess,shefeels,isthepeoplewhoworkhere.

ThemajorityofthePioneer’sstaffwasbornandraisedintheareaandtakesownershipintheirwork.Inreturn,notesLister,thePioneertakescareofitsworkersasitalsotakescareofthecommunitybydoingitsjobrighteveryday.

CELEBRATES 140thAnniversary

Internationallyknown,DickTermesisrecognizedasonethemostoriginalandinnovativevisualartistslivingtoday.Mostartistsspendtheirentirelifetryingtofindthatonespecialthing.Thatspecialideaorstylethatwillallowthemtocontributesomethingtotheartworldthatistrulyunique.DickTermeshasdiscoveredhisidea,lendingtointernationalrecognitionofSpearfish.

RaisedinSpearfish,TermesreceivedhisBachelor’sDegreeinEducationfromhishometownBlackHillsStateUniversityandquicklybeganacareerasaneducator.ItwasduringthisperiodthatDicktrulydiscoveredhistalentforsharingideas.Afterfouryearsasahighschoolartandbiologyteacher,DickTermesdecidedtocontinuehiseducationattheUniversityofWyoming,wherehereceivedaMaster’sDegreeinArtandbegantoexploreperspectiveart.

DickTermeshasbeenpaintingsphericalpaintingssince1968whenhereceivedhisMastersDegreeinArtfromtheUniversityofWyoming.HecontinuedhispursuitwithhisthesisontheTermesphereattheOtisArtInstituteinLosAngeleswherehereceivedhisMastersinFineArts.

SpearfishishometoDick.Itiswherehefeelshisbest.In1971,TermesreturnedtohisnativeSouthDakotacommunityandtookapositionatBlackHillsStateUniversityasanAssociateProfessorofArt.Helovedtimespentintheclassroom,helpingaspiringartistsreachtheircreativepotential.Eventually,Dickchosetonurturehisownpotentialandpursuehisartonafull-timebasis.

Termeshasflourishedasafull-timeartist.In1992,heopenedtheTermesphereGalleryjustoutsideofSpearfish,whichhasbeenvisitedbythousandsofadmirersandartenthusiastsfromaroundtheglobe.Inthepast32years,Dickhasexploredover160 sphericalsurfaces.

So, What is a Termesphere?

WhatyouareseeingwhenyoulookataTermespherepaintingisanopticalillusion.Aninside-outviewofthetotalphysicalworldaroundyouontheoutsidesurfaceofahangingandrotatingsphere.Ifyouwereontheinsideofthissphere,thispaintedimagearoundyouwouldseemnormal,butitisreadfromtheoutside.Fromanypointwhenyoulookatthesphericalpaintings,theimagereadscorrectly.

Termespherescapturetheup,downandallaroundvisualworldfromonerevolving

pointinspace.EachTermesphereisarevolvingthree-dimensionalspace/timeexplorationofanentirelycloseduniverse,meaningthatwhatyousee,rotatinginfrontofyou,isonecompleteworldorenvironment.Mostofthetimethesespheresarepaintedontheoutside,soittakesasixpointperspectivesystemtokeepallofthisenvironmentaroundyouorganized.Aneducatoratheart,oneof

hismanytalentsishisabilitytoconnectwithallagegroupsthrough

avarietyoflecturesandworkshops.Byincorporatingvisualdemonstrationsand

hands-onactivities,Termesisabletoteachstudentsofallageshowart,math,andscienceintertwineseamlesslyinoureverydayworld.Heisabletocaptureandshowstudentsthiscompellingconceptinavisualway.Formanyyearsnow,Dickengageswithelementary,middleschool,highschoolstudentsaswellasUniversitiesandcommunityandseniorgroupsaroundthenation,includingSpearfish.Theseworkshopsaredesignedtobringart,mathandsciencetolifeforthesestudents.

Termeshaspresenteduniqueartandmathseminarsacrossthecountryandallovertheworld.Hisartisfeaturedindozensofpublicationsillustratingconceptsinart,math,psychology,opticalillusions,and eveneconomics.

MarkieScholzisoneofthefoundersofDragonsAreTooSeldomPuppetProductions.ShehasbeeninvolvedasaperformerinallproductionsandworkshopsdonebytheDragonsthroughoutitsmorethan30yearhistory.WatchingMarkieandhermadcapcastofpuppetcharactersisnothinglessthanawe-inspiring.Sheisaonepersontroupewithacastofthousands,aglobetrottingtroubadourandanelectrifyingentertainer.

Foundedin1971byMarkieandhersisterClaire,Scholzandherpuppetshaveperformedtheirmatchlessformoffamilyentertainmentinthirty-ninestatesandsixcountries.Shetravels30,000to70,000milesayearinherlife-longpursuittobringpuppetstothemasses.

PrairieHillsTransitisanon-profitcorporationdedicatedtoprovidingpublictransportationforpersonsofallages,includingthosewhomayrequirespecializedtransportation.Asanorganization,theyhavereceivednumerousawards,andrecognitionsfortheiroutstandinginnovationandservicetothepeopleofWesternSouthDakota.ThreeseparateyearsPHTwasawardedtheInnovativeAgencyoftheYearawardforactivitydeemedaboveandbeyondthenormalworkdayrequirementsofatransitorganizationandforthestaffdegreeofprofessionalismandoutreach.In2013,longtimeexecutivedirectorBarbClinewaselectedPresidentoftheCommunityTransitAssociationofAmerica.ClineisthefirstrepresentativefromSouthDakotatoserveonthisnationalboard,givingtheregionanewvoiceinWashingtonD.C.

“PrairieHillsTransithasalwaysbeensogoodtome.WhenIwas75,IdecideditwastoodifficulttodriveovertoBelleFourchefortheCowboyBandConcerts,toomanydeeronthatroad.IwenttoBarbandaskediftherewasanywaythatwecouldgetabustogooverthere.Shetoldme,‘Rose,yougivemethepeopleandI’llgiveyouthebuses.’NowIam85yearsoldandIcanstillgoseemyconcerts.Theyreallydowhat’sbestfortheirriders,”ravedRoseAnderson,2011SouthDakotaRideroftheYear.Eachyear,theDakotaTransitAssociationrecognizesa‘RideroftheYear’thatisanactiveriderofpublictransportationandisalsoanadvocatefortransitintheircommunity.

BarbClineinitiatedthetransportationprogramforseniorsinSpearfishin1989,operatingjustafewhoursadaytogetpeopletothelocalnutritionprogram.Herpassionatecommitmenttoenhancingthelivesofoldercitizensandhelpingthemremainindependentintheirownhomeshassincegrowntoencompassridersofallages,andcommunitiesacrossa12,500-square- milearea.

Fromitsorigination,PrairieHillsTransithasgrownfromservingstrictlyseniorcitizensinSpearfishtoprovidingtransportationtostudents,elderly,individualswithdisabilities,andthegeneralpublic–inaserviceareaofadozencommunitiesinsix differentcounties.

Startingout,thefleetconsistedofasingleusedvan(withnoliftequipment)thattransportedseniorsforafewhoursadayinSpearfish.TheprogramhassincebecomeafullycoordinatedpublictransportationsystemcoveringanareamorethanseventimesthesizeofRhodeIsland.Thepublictransitsystemservespeopleofallages,offeringtripsforemployment,school,

daycare,social,medicaltrips,shopping,specialeventsorwhateveracommunitymembermayneed.Nowsportingafleetof40vehicles,mostlylift-equipped,theserviceisindispensableinmorethanadozencommunitiesinsixcountiesintheBlackHills.

Fromasingleparkingspaceatthenutritionsite,PrairieHillsTransitlatermovedtoColoradoBoulevardinSpearfish,whichwas10,000squarefeet.ThecompanyaddedbusfacilitiesinBelleFourche,Sturgis,andCusterasserviceexpandedtomeettheneedsofneighboringcommunities,andanothersiteisintheworkstohousethevehiclesinHotSprings.ServicesarenowavailableinButte,Custer,Meade,Lawrence,FallRiver,andPenningtoncounties.

InMay2011,thanksinlargeparttomoneyfromtheAmericanRecoveryandReinvestmentAct,PrairieHillsTransitmovedintoanew40,000squarefeetfacility–aregionalintermodaltransitfacility.ThenewfacilityhousesPHT’sofficeandgaragespace,aswellasbeingtheticketingagencyforJeffersonBusLines.Italsohasastate-certifiedchildcarecenterthatisabletoaccommodateupto40childrenages6weeksto10yearsold.

PrairieHillsTransitandtheChildCareCenterareproudtobeUnitedWayAgencies.Theypartnerwithtwenty-sixadditionalNorthernHillsnon-profitagenciesundertheUnitedWayumbrella,inspiringhopeandchanginglives.BeingaUnitedWayagencyalsoshowsaccountability,asallpartneragenciesareauditedeveryyear.Thesepartnershipscreatecommunityconnectionandastreamlineduseofservicestoarearesidents.

Establishedin1957byLeoandIreneErhart,theDakotaTrailwaysfleetbeganasfiveschoolbusesandseveralbusesfortours.Today,nowmorethanthreegenerationsandfiftyyearslater,DakotaTrailwayshasexpandedtofourlocationsinthreestatesandtheirteamofhighly-trainedstaffmanagesafull-servicefleetofluxurycoaches,minibuses,andschoolbuses.

into Mountain

ThelastacademicyearthatEastElementarySchoolwasutilizedwas2010-2011.Afterthatyear,theSpearfishSchoolBoardwasabletoselltheoriginalHighSchoolportion,butkeptthe1961additiontohelpmanagepotentialgrowth.Initially,theintentwastomovethetwopre-schoolSpecialEducationprograms(ages0-3and3-5)tothenewerportionoftheoldEastElementarySchool.Asthoseplanswerebeingmade,twothingschanged.TheSchoolBoarddecidedtoinvestinalldaykindergarten,shiftingfromahalf-dayprogram.Thatdoubledtheneedforclassroomspaceandstaff.Therewasalsoasuddeninfluxofadditionalstudentsatthattime.Affordablehousingcontributedtothat,aswellasthedevelopmentoftheBackkeninNorthDakota.ItwasdeterminedthattherewasnotroomenoughatWestElementarytomanagethegrowthofthekindergartenprogramandtheincreasingnumberofstudents.Itwasthenthatthe1961buildingbecameamuchlargerprojectthanfirstanticipated,astheintentwastomovethefulldayKindergartenprogramthere.Therenovationtookaboutayeartocomplete,openingtostudentsforthe2013-2014schoolyear.Kindergartenutilizesnineofthetenclassroomsavailableatthatsite,provingtheneedforthe additionalspace.

Openforthe2011-2012schoolyear,CreeksideElementarywasbuilttoreplacetheagingandmarginallyfunctionalEastElementarycomplex,whichincludedtheoriginal1923SpearfishHighSchoolandthe1961addition.Itwasbuilttomanagesevenclassroomsforeachgradehousedthere:third,fourthandfifth.

SuperintendentDavePetersposedagoodquestion,"Whoknewatthattimewewouldfillandsurpassthatfootprintsoquickly?"

Theadditionbecamenecessarybecauseofthesignificantinfluxofchildreninthelowergradesovera2-yearperiodoftime.ThemoveoftheKindergartenerstoMountainViewandtheconstructionofCreekside,barelycoveredanticipatedgrowthinstudentsoverthenext5years.WhenCreeksideElementaryfirstopened,theenrollmentwas436.By2015,theenrollmenthadrisento550.Withtheadditionalwingconstructedinthatyear,itincreasedthecapacityofCreeksidetobeingabletoaccommodate615studentstotal.

TheSpearfishSchoolBoardtakesgreatprideinprovidingthestudentswiththetoolstheyneedtosucceed.ThissuccesssolidlyshowsthroughabovenationalaverageACTscoresandthelongtime98%graduaterate.

"Asaschoolboard,wearestudentdriveninallwedowithemphasistoensuresafety,success,andpreparationforlifeaftergraduation,"saidschoolboardmemberMistieCaldwell.

DavePeters,SpearfishSchoolSuperintendentisretiringafter42yearsinpubliceducation,thelast36ofthoseasaSuperintendentofSchoolsinRichey,MT–oneyear;nineyearsinRedLodge,MT;tenyearsinWhitefish,MTandsixteenyearshereinSpearfish."Afterretirement,mywifeandIareplanningtomovebacktoNWMontanawhereourchildrenandgrandchildrenalllive"statedPeters.

UnderMr.Petersleadership,accomplishmentsincludeupdatingfacilitiesandmakingthemsaferforstudentsandstaff;maintainingthehighexpectationsandlevelofperformanceofthestaff;hiringanexcellentgroupofadministrativestafftoleadallcriticalareasofouroperations.SpearfishalsoremainsamongtheStateleadersineducationaltechnologyutilization,useofPrincipalandTeacherEffectivenessmodels,andparticipationinprofessionalorganizationstomaintainthatedgeandleadershipinthefield.

SpearfishisexcitedtowelcomeKirkEastonasthenewSpearfishSuperintendentbeginninginJulyof2016.Mr.EastonwillberelocatingfromLennox,SDwhereheservedasSuperintendentfortwoyears.PriortohisroleinLennox,EastonheldadualroleofHighSchoolPrincipalandDistrictSuperintendentinWarner,SDfor overadecade.

Parochial Schools

SpearfishisalsohometotwoChristianbasedparochialschools,theBlackHillsChristianAcademyandtheBlackHillsClassicalChristianAcademy.

TheBlackHillsChristianAcademywasfoundedasBelleFourcheChristianSchoolinthefallof1992withtwoteachersserving12students.MeetinginlocalchurchesforfouryearsenabledthemtopurchaseafacilityinAugust1996justoutsideofBelleFourche.Weopenedthedoorstostudentsinpreschoolthrougheighthgrade.BFCSchangeditsnamein2002toBlackHillsChristianAcademy.In2008,theschoolmoveditslocationtoSpearfish.BHCAleasedfromalocalchurch,butafter3yearsquicklyoutgrewthefacilities.In2011,BHCAmovedintotheircurrentfacilitywheretheycancontinuetogrowinenrollmentandinacademicachievements.Today,BHCAhas136studentsand23staff.

Dual Enrollment

DualenrollmentisavailableforstudentsattheBlackHillsChristianAcademygradessixthrougheighttoattendtwoclassesattheSpearfishMiddleSchool,allowingstudentstobeonthepublicschoolsports'teams,band,orchoir.

SpearfishHighSchooloffersdualcreditcourseinpartnershipwithBlackHillsStateUniversity,alsobasedinSpearfish.Thisallowsthestudentstosimultaneouslyenrollinhighschoolandpost-secondarycreditcourses,awardingthemapostsecondaryinstitutiontranscriptuponcompletion.


ThevarietyofculturesinSpearfisharewhatmakeitunique.Manydifferentpeoplecomingtogetherwithacommoninterestareoneofthebestthingsaboutlivinginthiscommunity.Oneofthebiggest“families”inSpearfishwouldbetheavidbicycleenthusiasts.BicyclingisauniversalpassionofthecommunitymembersofSpearfish,whetheritbeagroupofkidsridingtheirbikesaroundtheCityPark,theGravelGrindersracingupBigHill,oragroupofpeoplegoingonaridetorememberalostlovedone,bicyclingisattheheartandsoulofSpearfish.

Bicyclinginthiscommunitywouldnotbethesameifitwasn’tforthededicatedindividualswhostrivefornewandinnovativewaystobikethroughourarea.

Cooperative

In2009,theSpearfishBikeCoopopeneditsdoorsasaplaceforthosetodonatebicycles,parts,andaplacetolearnhowtomaintainonesbicycle.Bicyclecoopsfunctionasaplacewherecommunitymemberscanlearntomaintainandrepairtheirownbicycle.Coopsaregenerallyrunbyvolunteersandaresupportedsolelybydonationandfundraising.Theyalsoworktodistributebicyclestopeopleinneedofabikeandtheyencouragebicycleinvolvementwithinthecommunity,andinacommunitylikeSpearfishthecoophasbeenagreatsuccess.

JeremySmithandfriendJohnWilliamsrolledupthegaragedooroftheSpearfishBikeCooponSaturday,October10,2009,officiallybeginningtheirquesttobringthecommunitytogetherinonemoreaspect.

Smithappliedforandwasawardedagranttofundacommunitybuildingwhereeducationabouteco-friendlylivingisemphasized,takingtheformofa bikeshop.

Theypridethemselvesonbeingavolunteer-run,communityworkspacededicatedtobicyclecultureanditsrelatedbenefits.Theyhavealltheessentialtoolsforanyoneinthecommunitytocomeintouseattheirconvenience.Operatingsolelyondonationsfromthecommunity,theyaregratefulforthesuccessover theyears.

TheSpearfishBikeCoopisalsoinstrumentalinpromotingandhostingSpearfishBikeWeek.Intotheir4thyearnow,thefirstfullweekinSeptemberisSpearfishBikeWeek.Thebikecoopoffersbikemaintenancetraining,aswellasactivitiestopromoteridingyourbicycleversusdrivingyourcar.Activitiesin2015includedacommunitysocialride,guidedrides,women’sworkshop,alleycatscavengerhunt,bikeinmovie,bikesdowntown,abicyclegardentour,withtheweekculminatingwithDakotaFive-Oactivities.

In2000,PerryJewettattendedandracedtheLaramieEnduroinWyoming.AfterdoingtheraceandreturningtohishomelandofSpearfishSD,hebeganponderingtheideaofhostinghisown‘endurance’MTBrace.AsaforestserviceemployeehehadaccesstomapsandtherewasaroutethathehadheardthattheFSwantedtoturnintoatrailsystem,butlackedthefundingtodoso.Withthis‘route’asablueprint,Jewettbeganscouringthemapsandlinkedtogetherseveral

existingtrails,withforestroadsandtheknowledgethatmuchnewtrailneededtobebuilttolinkthisallup.Afterhundredsofmanhoursofbuildingnewtrail,clearingoutandcleaningexistingtrail,andsecuringapermitfromtheFStheracewasreadytotakeplaceandtheDakotaFive-Owasborn.

Thefirstannualeventtookplacein2001with81riderstoeingtheline,andwouldcontinuetogroweveryyearthereafter.Changeshavebeenmadeovertheyears,withmoresingle-trackbeingbuilt,moreaidstationsadded,andmanymoreridersattendingtherace.CurrentlytheDakotaFive-Ogenerallysellsoutinlessthan2hourswith600riders,andhasbecomeoneofthetopracesinthenation.Withthehelpofmanyamazingvolunteersovertheyears,greatsupportfromthelocalcommunity,andsomeawesomeindustrysupportandsponsorship,theFive-OcontinuestoevolveintoaMTBracethatriderscomefromacrossthenationtoenjoy.

Enteringintoits16thyear,theDakotaFive-Ocontinuestotemptridersfromacrossthecountry.Fromthehandbuiltsingle-trackthatgracesmuchofthecourse,tothehighspiritedafterparty,this50+milebikeraceimpressesriderswiththeeventandourbeautifultownofSpearfish.

WiththegrowingpopulationofFatbiking,theDakotaFive-Oeventcoordinatorscreatedthe28Belowrace,whichtakesplaceinMarchofeachyearatSpearfishCanyonLodgetocelebratethelastweekendofwinter.AswiththeDakotaFive-O,theday’sendwithfood,friends,funandofcourse,CrowPeak Brewerybeer.

Establishedin1992,Neighborworks®DakotaHomeResourceswasfoundedoriginallyasagrassrootscommunityorganizationthatfocusedoncommunity

outreachprograms.KnownasNeighborhoodHousingServices,itsprogramsincludedpaintinghomes,cleaninguptrash,andorganizingblockclubs.Today,inpartnershipwithNeighborworks®America,theorganizationisavibrantmulti-facetedcommunitydevelopmentcorporationthatfocusesonaffordablehousing,communitydevelopment,andthepeoplewhobenefitfromthem.

By1996,JoyMcCracken,ExecutiveDirector,sawtheneedforaffordablehousinginDeadwoodandthesurroundingareaastheexpansionofgamingandthetourismindustrytightenedthesupplyofhousing.

In1998,DakotaHomeResourceslaunchedtheiraffordableCampaignforHomeownershipprogramwhichincludeseducationandindividualcounselingforhomebuyersandhomeowners.Householdslearnabouttheprocessofbuyingahome,credit,budgeting,andtheresponsibilitiesofhomeownership.Atthissametime,thecompanybeganitspartnershipwiththeGovernor’sHouseprogram,aprogramthatwascreatedasawaytoprovidereasonablysized,affordablehomestoincome-qualifiedindividualsandfamilies.Thisprogramprovidesaquality,low-cost,low-maintenance,andenergyefficientplacetocallhome.

Throughtheprogramexpansion,DakotaHomeResourcesassistedtheirfirsthomebuyerin1998,asinglemotherpurchasingherfirsthome.

Withinafewyears,DakotaHomeResourcesexpandedintoSpearfishtoassistwithaffordablehousing.Between2000-2003,theorganizationwasabletobuildnewhomesandassistinplacementofGovernor’sHomesforeighteenhouseholds inSpearfish.

In2007,DakotaHomeResourcesestablishedtheDakotaLandTrust.Highlandcostsarethemajorobstacletodevelopingandsecuringhousingformidtolowerincomefamilies.Onewaytoaddressthisistobuythehousingwithouttheland.Alandtrustisthemechanismthatallowsthisarrangement.Thehomepurchaserbuysthehomeandleasesthelanduponwhichthehomeissitedunderalongtermlease.Thehousingthenremainsaffordableinperpetuityandthesupplyofaffordablehousingismaintained.

DedicateddevelopersandlongtimeresidentsofSpearfish,JoeJorgensenandJimBenningofJ&BDevelopmentLLC,sawtheneedforaffordablehousinginSpearfishandwantedtogivebacktothecommunity.TheylearnedoftherecentcreationofDakotaLandTrustandthroughapartnershipwithCityofSpearfish,soldtenpropertiesatcostintheWagonBoxDevelopmenttothecity.TheCityofSpearfishsoldthoselotstoDakotaLandTrustandNeighborworksDakotaHomeResourcesatalargelyreducedratebyutilizingtheTaxIncrementFinancing(TIF)program.

BlackHillsAreaHabitatforHumanityisanonprofitministrythatwasfoundedin1990tosupportaffordablehousingintheBlackHillsregion.

BlackHillsAreaHabitatforHumanityisfoundedontheconvictionthateveryman,womanandchildshouldhaveasimple,decent,affordableplacetoliveindignityandsafety.Statisticsshowthatchildrenthatgrewupin

aHabitatHouseversusarentedapartmentormobilehome,havea116%higherrateofgoingontocollege.

Thereareover300peoplepermanentlyhousedintheBlackHillsAreaduetothesuccessfuleffortsofBHHabitatforHumanity'sabilitytopullacommunitytogetherforthesakeoftheirneighbors.In2015,withintheBlackHillscollectively,Habitathomeownerssaveover$9,000byowningtheirhomeoverrenting.

AnothersegmentofBlackHillsAreaHabitatforHumanity,aretheBlackHillsAreaHabitatReStoreouletsasasustainablefundinginitiativefornewhomeconstruction.Theoutletsreselldonated

buildingmaterialsandhomeitemstoraisemoneyfortheconstructionofHabitathousesinthegreaterBlackHillsRegion.New,usedandsurplusmaterialsaredonatedtoReStorebyindividuals,contractors,businesses,retailersandmanufacturers.

ReStoreisalsoanenvironmentalinitiative.Anestimated766,287poundsofmaterialsthatwouldhavebeensenttothelandfillwereabletofindnewhomes,literally!ReStorepartnerswithotherlocalbusinessesandnon-profitstoconductfunandinnovativewaystoreuseandrecyclematerialsthatwerenotableto besold.
