    Pastor’s word

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Happy New Year! What a year it has been. As we welcome 2021 with open arms, let us first reflect back on 2020 as a congregation. In spite of our world and lives being turned upside down by the pandemic, we have continued to grow in our mission of “Inspiring every generation to experience and share God’s grace in Jesus Christ.” Here are just a few of the many highlights by the numbers. Together we:

    • Led over 190 English and Spanish language worship services in person, outside or livestreaming on YouTube and, most recently Facebook, (with people attending across the nation) and hosted Drive-Thru Communion 11 times since July 22.

    • Facilitated and participated in 128 Facebook Live Evening Prayer and Hymn Singing Devotions since March 17.

    • Began hosting Discipleship Path classes (a priority for this year) and offered 10 Bible and Theology classes, 9 cultural awareness opportunities, 2 Marriage Courses, 2 classes on Sensitive Evangelism, 2 New Member classes, a Community of Hope leadership training class, 2 “Planning Your Legacy” classes, and 4 Mental Health related classes.

    • Hosted 5 Abendmusik concerts (2 in-person and 3 online) throughout the year.

    • Enjoyed over 48 child-focused Facebook Live story times with Sara Ray during while we were under “stay at home” orders.

    • Safely reopened the KCA early learning program in June and increased enrollment from 7 to 41.

    • Provided a safe, loving, learning environment for school-aged children through Camp Kinsmen for an unprecedented 14 weeks! (It’s usually 7-8 weeks.)

    • Provided the opportunity for 16 middle school, 26 high school, and 2 college students to facilitate Camp Hope online by creating over 75 separate videos to teach 15 bible stories over 3 weeks.

    • Welcomed Pastor Gabriel Marcano who led in-person worship for 113 different Spanish-speaking individuals since he arrived.

    • Fed 3,458 people during Wednesday night meals beginning July 22 and 14,524 individuals with the Mobile Food Truck since Aug. 1.

    • Collected and distributed a total of $13,662 in Noisy Offering support for mission partners and $4,563 in disaster relief.

    • Collected and sent items for 64 personal care kits and sent 193 quilts to Lutheran World Relief. Additional care kit items collected were donated to victims of Hurricane Laura.

    • Served 672 meals at the Drive Thru Thanksgiving Feast with 61 registrants for the Virtual Run/Walk for your Turkey.

    • Saved 402 lives with the blood drives we had in 2020.

    • Collected 105 holiday bags to give to Northwest Assistance Ministries and Bridging for Tomorrow

    • Installed 8 new lights in the courtyard, 5 safety lights by the parking lot, and upgraded 2 worship computers for better livestreaming capabilities.

    • Received, as of November, $1,217,458 in Capital Campaign contributions so far (81% of $1.5 million target) for God’s continued mission at Kinsmen.

This is only a small sample from the different areas of ministry! What a privilege it has been to serve in mission and ministry with all of you. I look forward to continuing God’s mission at Kinsmen in 2021.

    Grace and Peace,

    NEW SERMON SERIES

We all know the frustration of not being heard. We

experience this when we have a bad phone connection,

when the internet connection is weak on our Zoom calls,

or when people twist the meaning of our words. These

are small annoyances. God, however, wants us to hear

him clearly. God calls each one of us for his Holy

purposes. Thankfully our God has infinite patience and

calls us again and again. Join us for this 6-week sermon

series as we hear the call stories of Samuel, Jonah, Jesus,

and the disciples. Then together let us listen to where God

is calling each one of us in 2021.

The Me I Want To Be Class (Jan. 10-Feb. 7)

The New Year gives us an opportunity to examine how we spend our time and energy. It gives us

an opportunity to set new goals, make new changes, and form new habits—especially since some

of our good habits went out the window in 2020. How might your New Year’s resolutions be

guided by God’s Spirit? The Me I Want to Be 5-week class will help us grow into where God

intends us to be. We will consider the real-world barriers—pain and sorrow, temptations,

self-doubt, sin—and hear God’s plan for us to flourish even in a dark and broken world. God

invites us to live an abundant and joy-filled life. This will be an online video-based class that does

not require purchase or additional reading. However, to get the most out of the class, you are

encouraged to read the book entitled The Me I Want to Be by John Ortberg. Some copies are

available in the church library. Register for the class here and a Zoom link for the class will be sent

to you closer to the start date.

Rosca de Reyes - January 13 at 7 PM Online

Rosca de Reyes is a sweet bread, which is a special food for Three King's Day,

known as "Día de Reyes" in Spanish, and celebrated on January 6. The holiday

is sometimes referred to as the Twelfth Night because it falls twelve days after

Christmas, but is also known as Epiphany, and marks the day the Wise Men

or Magi, Melchor, Gaspar and Baltazar, are believed to have visited the

    Christ Child.

The symbolism of the Rosca de Reyes speaks of the Biblical story of Mary and

Joseph's flight to Egypt to protect the infant Jesus from the slaughter of the

innocents. The shape of the Rosca symbolizes a crown, in this case, the crown of King Herod from whom they were trying

to hide the infant Jesus. The dried fruit placed on top are jewels on the crown. The figurine in the Rosca represents baby

Jesus in hiding. The person who finds the baby Jesus is symbolically his godparent and must sponsor the party when he is

taken to the temple to be blessed, celebrated as Día de la Candelaria, or Candlemas, on February 2nd.

Registration for this learning event can be found here and on kinsmenlutheran.org.

The Women’s Thursday morning bible study will resume January 14 at 10 AM via Zoom. This study meets every week. The study will be “Job” by Lisa Harper. Books are available from Amazon, Lifeway or Christianbook.com. Invite your friends! Contact Stephanie Brady or Pastor Mark to learn more and to get the Zoom link.

As of the end of November, contributions of $1,217,458 have been

received, which is nearly 81% of the $1.5 million Capital Campaign

target. We are through 30 of 36 months of the campaign (83%), so

we are a bit behind at this time if we are going to meet our goal.

Please review your “Giving Statement” that was sent out in December

to make sure you are keeping up with your commitment or consider

    making a special gift.

Fully funding this endeavor will ensure the funding of our current and

future ministry objectives. Two obvious projects that have been

completed with this campaign are the audio/video system making our

LiveStream worship on You Tube possible and the courtyard lighting.

Plans are also being made to repair and replace the North parking lot

    this month.

Your continued support of Kinsmen and God’s mission we serve is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions about

the campaign or Kinsmen’s Long Range Vision, please do not hesitate to ask Peter Abt, John England,

    Joie Folkers or Pastor Beth.

The Stewardship Team thanks all who have returned Commitment Cards or

filled out the online form for our 2021 Annual Stewardship Drive. If you

have made a commitment to provide for our annual expense budget

and/or the Capital Campaign, we extend our sincere appreciation. The

generosity shown by the congregation has been phenomenal in the midst

of these challenging times. We have been able to meet our annual budget

and follow where God is leading us.

2021, as I am sure you are aware, will have some new challenges. It is

very important for us to know that all members are committed to God’s

mission at Kinsmen. Thus far, there have been 85 commitments submitted.

If you have not turned in a commitment card, one was mailed to you in the December mailing. You can also find cards in

the Narthex or go to the link and fill it out here. Lastly, you may call Anh Truong in the church office to give her your

commitment over the phone. Please turn this in by January 6, 2021 so we will know how to plan for the new year.

    Sincerely,

    The Stewardship Team

Financial Peace University Class January 10-March 7

FPU is a money-management course taught by one of America's most trusted financial advisors, Dave Ramsey. During the nine weekly video classes, Dave and his teaching team will walk you through the basics of budgeting, dumping debt, charitable giving, planning for the future and much more. Kinsmen's Stewardship team provides the added support for following through on these steps toward financial peace.

Some of the feedback we have received from students over the years include:

    • Before this class, I never felt “in control” of my finances. Now, I have a plan and confidence that I will make good decisions.

    • FPU has given me the tools I need to plan a budget and build wealth on an hourly salary. I am much more at ease about my finances.

    • We are now credit card debt free and committed to stay that way. We have most benefitted from learning God’s principles of money. Thank you for offering this class. You are making a difference in the community and your congregation.

We will be hosting the course ONLINE beginning January 10 at 1:30 PM. (The last class will be March 7.)

The cost is $100 for the 9-week course per individual/couple. (This is a discounted price from what you find on FPU’s website.) One book is included in the cost. If you attend 7 out of the 9 classes, you will receive a refund of $20. Additional partial scholarships may be available upon request from Pastor Beth. This class is best done with a group of others, so we encourage you not to do this alone. This class will be held online. A Zoom Link will be sent to you the week before class begins.

    (Parts 1-4 in July-October Newsletters)

    9. Overlooking Tax Implications

Whether you designate your assets to a nonprofit, family member or other beneficiary, be aware of the different tax implications. Nonprofits can receive accounts such as retirement funds tax free, while beneficiaries can unknowingly face double taxation.

    10. Not Confronting Your Own Mortality

Death is an uncomfortable topic, but delaying proper planning to avoid the conversation may put your family at financial risk. Consult an adviser sooner rather than later to establish an error-free plan tailored to your needs and wishes.

Use this helpful tool provided by ECLA to compile a complete list of all of your assets: http://download.elca.org/ELCA%20Resource%20Repository/Important_Notes_About_My_Estate.pdf. Then make a plan to review all of the beneficiary forms associated with these assets every 5 years.

Did you enjoy the Christmas lights in the courtyard again this year? If you

noisy offering It is our custom to collect a Noisy Offering for a Mission Partner on the second weekend of the month. This month’s mission partner is Living Water International.

For Living Water International, safe water is all about Jesus—demonstrating God’s love and proclaiming his gospel, the living water. For millions of thirsty people, safe water would be the start of a new life and, for many, a new life in Christ.

WE KNOW SAFE WATER IS THE BEGINNING of education for children, a safer life for women, and a stronger economy and better health for everyone. And when a safe water source is established in partnership with the local Church, it opens doors for the gospel.

Since 1990, we’ve set out to help the Church in North America be the hands and feet of Jesus, serving our thirsty sisters and brothers in the developing world. We implement participatory, community-based water solutions in more than 18 countries. Over the past 30 years, thanks to supporters like you, we’ve completed more than 20,000 water projects—and counting!

You can find out more information through their web site www.water.cc

Ever sit in church on Sunday and wonder where the flowers on the altar came from?

They might have come from the person sitting next to you. Kinsmen is blessed with its own Flower Committee. The Flower Committee takes donations of $25 in honor of, in memory of a loved one or in celebration of a family milestone and uses the donations to create the beautiful altar and narthex arrangements. After the worship services are completed, a Flower Committee member moves the arrangements to the cooler in the flower room. On Mondays, a team of rearrangers break the floral pieces down to make smaller arrangements of flowers that are delivered to Kinsmen members. If you have donated flowers for that week you will get a smaller arrangement delivered to you. Other deliveries of the smaller

arrangements may be given to the hospitalized, the homebound, the sick, those grieving, those celebrating the birth of a baby, those in a new home and even for “just because” reasons.

Your $25 donation for flowers does a lot of work. It beautifies the Sanctuary for the worship services, it can honor a loved one’s memory, it can celebrate a loved one’s achievements, it can be given to the Glory of God, it can remind a Kinsmen member that others are thinking of them and hoping for God’s healing grace to come to them in a time of need.

You may donate online or sign up on the chart located in the narthex.

    Thank you for sharing grace.

P.S. If you are interested in being involved in the arranging and/or re-arranging of flowers contact

Marie Shelor or Lynnae Schatz. Training is provided.

Thanks be to God for your extraordinary generosity! Kinsmen filled 105 holiday toy bags

for Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM) and Bridging for Tomorrow to bless local

children in a way they’ll always remember.
