Mission to acclimate

Honestly, it’s been an adjustment getting used to this new suburban lifestyle as 30 y/o NYC transplants with no kids, since buying our first home in Westfield in December 2020. Especially due to the pandemic which made meeting new friends a real challenge. That is why, as soon as the health conditions allowed, I challenged myself to get out in the community, get involved and essentially take the first steps towards forging the relationships that will make Westfield feel like home. Luckily, everyone we have met so far has been extremely warm and welcoming and we are feeling much more settled now 10 months in.

My objective with this monthly segment is to share any interesting tips I pick up as I continue to explore Westfield and the surrounding areas in case it is interesting to other newbies or established Westfield locals!

This month’s finds:

1) Get moving with Barre3 Westfield — barre3.com/studio-locations/westfield

I first discovered this full body balanced workout class on the @downtown_westfield Instagram account when I was looking for a fun way to move my body and hopefully make some friends. I direct messaged the @barre3westfield account asking for more

information and owner Lauren, who moved to Westfield in 2019 with her husband and daughters was so incredibly warm and welcoming that I immediately joined her 1st class for free and never looked back. I enjoy the upbeat community vibes at her outdoor weekend classes on Quimby and Foundation Park and I can’t wait for her new studio to open this fall.

Also, The Newcomers Club of Westfield (which I also joined as part of my newbie mission - westfieldnj.com/newcomers) recently hosted a meetup to join Lauren’s 9AM Saturday class on Quimby and then grab some Ono Bowls after and it was like 2 of my new worlds collided. It was so much fun, check out the pictures we took before class.

Pro newbie tip: Since her studio is brand new, Lauren has limited founding membership pricing which is a steal. I think the special pricing is technically closed now but I think if you are interested and get in touch with her, she might hook you up with the deal. Also, I hear Barre practice does wonders preparing for and recovering from labor. Who knew?

2) Get pampered at Everlasting Haven — www.everlastinghaven.com

I initially went in for the 30-minute express facial included on the housewarming gift certificate kit we received in the mail when we first moved. Owner Gina welcomed me and said she

local life

Discovering Westfield through the eyes of a Newcomer

would of course honor the certificate but said she couldn’t do a facial properly in only 30 minutes, so it turned into an amazing 90-minute relaxing experience for free! My mind was blown. After this, I was immediately hooked and booked some follow-up treatments. I plan to be a regular. Also, I hear Natalia does amazing massages there too!

Pro newbie tip: ask for Gina who will give you a loyalty card so your 7th treatment is free!

3) Practice your golf swing at Scotch Hills Country Club — www.scotchhillsgolfcourse.com

OK this one is my husband Pratik’s discovery because he started golfing when we moved to Westfield and has tried most of the courses in the area. This small course is on the Westfield/Scotch Plains border and is a great find for new players with its relaxed environment and super friendly staff.

Pro newbie tip: it’s a 9-hole course and they do not advertise this explicitly anywhere but if you pay for a round, they will let you (and encourage you to) play a second for free! Happy golfing, enjoy!

4) Fill your pie hole at Scheferstein farm Market in Clark — schiefersteinfarmmarket.com

This is another one of my husband’s finds because he is obsessed with pies and has tried many in this area since moving. Also, I

thought it was a very timely suggestion for the October Issue.

Pro newbie tip: this place not only bakes yummy pies to order but also asked us what time we would pick up, so it was fresh out of the oven and still warm when we stopped by! Talk about amazing and personalized customer experience. Well done, we shall be back!

pet of the month

Where/why did you get your pet? We got him in the West Village after brunch one day. It wasn’t planned. But once we met him it just felt SO right.

Anything special or unusual about your pet? His huge personality for such a tiny body. He is SO brave. His size doesn’t hold him back from anything.

What do you like best about your pet? When you talk to him, he tilts his head like he knows exactly what you’re saying. His favorite words are chicken, dinner and hungry. If you want to take a picture of him , just say one of those words, and he will stare at you with his ears up and his head tilted.

How spoiled are your pets? Most people would say that Ricky is very spoiled. He has a clothing rack in our house. He’s been everywhere from the Hamptons to Palm Beach to the Caribbean. Our doormen in Tribeca said they want to come back in their next life as Ricky. However, the truth is that we are the ones who feel truly spoiled. We couldn’t have ever dreamed of a better dog and everyone who meets him loves him.

After having our season cut short last year, the girls were eager to get back on the field. We have 2 returning

varsity starters which might be a concern some years, but this season in particular we have a team consisting

of multi-sport athletes, which is a huge advantage. Their athleticism has strengthened our lineup and has

given us depth because they are willing to adapt and can play multiple positions. Not only that, we are a

young team who is driven and ready to prove themselves on the field. I’m confident they will be a competitive

team this season. I saw it first hand at our game vs. Scotch Plains-Fanwood. We were down 0-2, tied the

game in the 4th quarter, and won in overtime! They didn’t give up and I am incredibly proud of the team.

The future is bright!

Senior Year: A Reflection on Our Time in Westfield BY VIVIAN JECKELL AND MOLLY REILLY, Staff, Optic Magazine

Senior year is full of “lasts.” Last school picture, last sports season, last time in class with kids we’ve known our whole lives. However, we are gearing up for quite a few firsts as well. The class of 2022 is just beginning the next stage of our lives, and for a lot of people, that next stage is pursuing higher education.

Our college applications take up the majority of our time during our senior year, and a large portion of these applications requires reflection on our academic careers. This has forced us to fondly recall memories from even our middle school years that have started friendships or sparked an interest in a new area of study. While these college applications are demanding, they let us reminisce and even brag a little about everything we have accomplished and lived through these past seventeen years in Westfield.

We are so lucky to live in a town that has such a good public school system and that affords us so many opportunities to become the best versions of ourselves. We are both students of the excellent journalism program at WHS, which produces interesting and highly awarded reporting in both its publications, Hi’s Eye and Optic Magazine. These publications are uncensored and student-run, which is something unique to our school. Participating in this excellent program has made us passionate about news coverage, and has even inspired us to pursue Journalism beyond our high school careers.

We are also both Advanced Placement (AP) students, which means that we take classes designed by the College Board to offer a college-level course in the chosen subject. These classes are often difficult and require a great deal of work in order to succeed. Part of the AP curriculum is preparation for a standardized exam at the end of the year. A passing grade on these exams allows students to get college credit for their hard work, which gives them a leg up both academically and financially. WHS offers dozens of AP courses, something that many schools do not. This is extremely important to students, not only fostering the work ethic needed for higher levels of study but also empowering them to begin their college education at an advantage to others.

Of course, knowing that we are leaving Westfield in a year makes us nostalgic for the non-academic parts of our time here too. We will make each trip to the farmers market, each train we catch at the station and each debate over which town pizza place is the best a little more mindful and a little more grateful.

Divorce is an unfortunate reality, yet we all know someone who has experienced it. To get back on track to meeting your long-term goals, below are my Top 6 Financial To-Do’s after a divorce. Each one plays an essential part in rebuilding your finances.

1) Build Your Balance Sheet: Start by building your personal balance sheet to help track what assets you now own and how they can serve to meet your long-term financial goals.

The best resource to identify your assets is the marital separation agreement. This document includes every asset and account along with who kept it post-divorce. These assets include bank accounts, investment accounts, individual stock, retirement accounts, real estate, business interests, personal property and so much more. Remember to include any debt that is now yours, such as a mortgage, auto loan or credit card debt.

2) Retitle Assets: Do not delay in moving accounts/investments that were awarded as part of the marital settlement to a new account in your individual name, preferably at a different financial institution to give yourself a fresh start. When you transfer the assets, make sure to keep records of the cost basis of your investments for income tax purposes.

The sooner you begin this process the less likely it is that something will be left behind.

3) Establish a New Budget: To begin designing your future, you should first understand how much you can afford to spend. Begin by assessing all sources of monthly income available. It is also important to identify which sources are fixed, such as salary and alimony, and which might fluctuate, such as commissions.

Once you have compiled your sources of income, compare the income amount to your fixed monthly expenses as well as your variable monthly expenses. Be sure to factor in a monthly savings amount to help you continue to grow your wealth. The goal is to have remaining funds at the end of every month after contributing to savings.

4) Rebalance the Investment Portfolio: You now need a plan to grow your assets while also staying on track to meet your long-term goals. If you have never made investment decisions in the past, consider the benefit of working with a professional financial advisor who can provide guidance on current market conditions. Assess whether your current investment accounts are fully invested or holding cash. Are the investments appropriate for your level of risk tolerance? Aside from setting up a budget, this is probably the most important step to get back on track to help reach your long-term financial goals.

5) Review Your Beneficiaries/Estate Plan: As you start to become more organized, now is the time to make a concerted effort to review your estate plan. Your Will most likely named your ex as the beneficiary of your estate. This needs updating along with all your retirement accounts, pension benefits and possibly life insurance policies. You should also work with an attorney to update your other estate planning documents such as any Trusts, Health Care Proxy, and Power of Attorney.

6) Check Your Personal Credit: Maybe it’s been a while since you last checked your credit. Start by requesting a copy of your credit report with one of the three credit agencies – Equifax, Experian, or Transunion. See which accounts are still reported as open and which have been closed. If you don’t have a credit history and need to start building one, make it a gradual process in obtaining credit. Don’t rush to apply for several credit cards at once, as this can have the opposite effect and lower your credit score. Try waiting 3-6 months between credit card applications.

What’s Ahead: Each of these areas play an important role in securing your financial future. If you need assistance, recruit the help of a professional financial advisor (look for the CFP® credential) to help you focus on the whole picture as well as help you navigate the more complicated details.

The most important item is to not procrastinate. Get started today in planning the next chapter of your life!

Mix the dry ingredients together. Rub each side of the steaks with the dry seasonings. Place on the grill and cover with a pan to steam. (Closing the grill may get too hot.) About 8 minutes each side but keep an eye on it so that it doesn’t burn.

local fitness

Health is so often measured by appearance of thinness, fat, muscles and cellulite. But what lies below the surface? Cho-lesterol? High Blood Pressure? Osteoporosis? Visceral Fat? Happiness? Sadness? Friendships or Loneliness?

Probably a mixture. Especially in today’s world between pan-demics and politics, friendships and families have suffered or have had to be distanced. There have been weight gains and social losses. Although I wish I could solve current events (elect Lori Sternberg for President), I can’t. The best thing I can do though is give you the tools to make the best of “you”.

Tool Chest:

Eat a rainbow. Try to fill your plate with a variety of veggies, proteins and starches.

Move Your Body: Exercise, Dance, Walking, Biking, Swim-ming etc., stretch your limbs and get your heart pumping ev-ery day.

Find hobby for you and only you that not only occupies you but brings you joy. Me... I have a few, but this past spring /summer has been creating a butterfly garden.

Go outside. Breathe in the air and soak up a little vitamin D. Vitamin D plays a huge role in your overall health.

Don’t skip your annual checkup. Trust me on this one. You never know what lies beneath. You can’t always judge based upon appearance.

Be kind to yourself. We are our own worst judges. And then be kind to others. Everyone is human.

Tell us about us a little bit about you. Did you grow up in town?

My wife and I moved here from Manhattan 12 years ago. She grew up nearby and knew of Westfield. We visited the town—it had a movie theater, a bagel shop, and pizzerias, so I was all for it.

What do you like best about the town?

The best thing about Westfield is the people. This is a great, sup-portive, loving community. Unfortunately, my wife died three years ago from cancer, but the support we have received from friends and even acquaintances has been overwhelming, wheth-er it is giving my children rides to soccer games or even remind-ing me that Picture Day is coming up.

You are a writer! How did you get into this business?

I’m an aspiring writer. Since elementary school I have wanted to be a writer, and now I am! This book started as a poem more than 25 years ago and has been put on the shelf and dusted off a few times. Self-publishing allowed me to pick the artist, and after looking at the amazing illustrations by Palmer Murphy, I think it was the best decision I made.

Tell us about your new book.

Tonight, Tonight is Halloween celebrates the fun and spookiness of Halloween from the eyes of both children and adults. The book is chock full of rich illustrations with forty illustrations spread throughout 66 pages. Palmer Murphy’s illustrations include many fun nuggets, as well a couple of homages to our town’s most famous resident, Charles Addams.

How can others learn from your commitment and inspi-ration? What’s most important to success?

My children were there when this book started as a poem. I read it to their classmates during the Halloween season. They have been at my side during this whole process. Hopefully, they have seen that if you set your sights on a goal, with hard work and a little sense of humor you can attain it.

I think defining what success is and allowing for different lev-els of success is what is most important. No matter how many

books are sold, the endeavor is a success because I learned how to publish a book and followed through with my plan until it was completed.

Anything we missed?

Tonight, Tonight is Halloween will be featured at Addamsfest. I have been invited to read the book aloud in Downtown Westfield at the annual celebration. Also, life-size cutouts of several of the characters from the book will be posted around Foundation Park on South Ave, and some of the characters should also find their way onto the Wicked Windows of Westfield.

About 1 in 8 U.S. women will receive a life-altering diagnosis of breast cancer during her lifetime.

Whether you are newly diagnosed, are facing a recurrence, or seeking a second opinion, you’ll undoubtedly have many questions about your treatment plan. Will it include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, plastic surgery, and/or genetic testing? What will come first and how long will it take before you’re on the road to recovery? How will it impact your work and family?

Overlook Medical Center’s Comprehensive Breast Cancer Treatment Program takes the guesswork out of the process with a single phone call, connecting patients with our multidisciplinary team of leading breast cancer specialists. During one convenient visit, patients can meet with a breast surgeon, radiation oncologist, and medical oncologist – each of whom will discuss the diagnosis, answer questions, and outline every step of the recommended treatment plan.

Advances in imaging, medical oncology, surgery, and radiation oncology have revolutionized the way we detect and treat breast cancer. Patients at Overlook benefit from a comprehensive array of procedures and treatments, including 3-D mammography (the gold standard for breast cancer screening); nipple-sparing mastectomy; DIEP flap breast reconstruction, which rebuilds the breasts by taking tissue from the abdominal area; and SAVI SCOUT®, a wireless localization system benefitting women undergoing breast lumpectomy during the pre-surgical process. Our patients have access to personalized immunotherapies, early- and late-stage clinical trials, genetic counseling, and integrative therapies designed to heal the whole patient.

While surgery may be the first line of treatment for some women, others may benefit from an initial course of targeted systemic treatment based on the biologic characteristics of their cancer. Each case is unique and that’s why a collaborative multi-specialty approach to treatment is essential. It is a model that is practiced at most major academic institutions and one that we are proud to offer here in our community.

Women today juggle so many roles. They may be caring for elderly parents, have a demanding job, or parenting a special needs child. That’s why every treatment plan reflects both the highest standard of medical care as well as the patient’s own unique needs and lifestyle.

Overlook’s Comprehensive Breast Cancer Treatment Program empowers patients to be engaged in their treatment planning process and facilitates relationships with their physicians before treatment has even begun. Patients have told us that they feel embraced by a whole family of caregivers, dedicated to their physical, psychological, and social well-being.

Convenience is another major benefit. Getting three expert opinions in one afternoon saves time and expedites treatment. Traditionally, patients shuttle from one doctor to the next, gathering different opinions and losing valuable time. Here, our team of specialists have a standing appointment to review breast imaging together, discuss the patient’s history, and collaborate on the best course for a cure. Are you one of the masses with stockpiles of half-filled containers of cosmetic skincare products purchased from high-end retailers at the mall, department stores, or local pharmacies that don’t work or provide minimal results? If so, it’s time to learn about medical-grade skincare. Let’s start with the obvious, shall we?

Science (because science, duh)! Long and short, medical-grade skincare products are backed by scientific, evidence-based research and purposefully developed to facilitate changes in the skin. FDA-regulated, these pharmaceuticals are designed to penetrate the epidermis with concentrated amounts (99.9%) of active ingredients, affecting deeper layers of the skin and assuring optimal outcomes. Before made available to the public, there must be scientific evidence and multiple studies supporting the skincare product in its specific claims. However, this is not necessarily the case with most over-the-counter skincare options (aka cosmetics). The sales tactics of companies “hyping up” active ingredients are often misnomers. What you see on television that is desirable – from growth factors to peptides to retinols – isn’t so desirable if outcomes are what you’re seeking. The percentages of active ingredients in non-medical-grade skincare are simply scientifically unable to provide the results often “guaranteed,” let alone those desired by the consumer.

Consultation! Licensed estheticians working in medical aesthetics practices can offer recommendations for your skincare based on clinical assessment. Blindly throwing darts when it comes to your skincare, especially for your face, is unwise and can actually do harm. Consultation with licensed estheticians will not only save you money, but its expert advice will save your skin! This is especially important for those who are pregnant, immunocompromised, experience allergic reactions, and prefer products free of parabens, chemicals, and other potentially harmful toxins. Committing to medical-grade skincare products and regimens will cost less money and yield desired outcomes.

It’s time to make the investment that undeniably pays dividends instead of crowding your bathroom vanity with unusable and ineffective products. Don’t be swayed by attractive advertising labels or pretty packaging. Stop by, educate yourself, and learn how medical-grade skincare regimens and outcome-specific treatments are a wonderful and effective way of complimenting and supporting non-invasive injectable treatments like Botox and fillers.

A variety of factors continue to drive this extended sellers’ market into the months ahead. First and foremost, we continue to have only 1.4 months of inventory available to buyers given very few homes for sale matched with tremendous demand (NOTE: a balanced market has 5 - 6 months of inventory). Further, the number of move-in ready homes is even lower. If you have attempted to secure a contractor lately you

know that the demand for builders and home improvement services is at all time high. The clean up needed to address Hurricane Ida’s damage has exacerbated this need. Move-in ready homes, therefore, have a huge pent up demand.

Additionally, fear that the Delta variant could stall economic growth has helped to keep interest rates low but prices high. The variant, low interest rates and the higher income levels of millennials than past generations has contributed to a mass exodus from urban areas into luxury style first homes in suburban towns like Westfield where the average price of a home has soared towards $900k versus $782k just a year prior. That’s a 15% increase!

Note: All data is as of July 2021.

First off, tell us a little about your family.

Ex wife Laura Alexander & daughter Oria Alexander live in Westfield. I now live just around the corner in Scotch Plains. My brother Greg and sister-in-law Sheila Alexander live in Rogers Arkansas and will travel here for the event on October 24. Our benefit is in honor of their son, my nephew Jay Alexander 1991 – 2011.

You have traveled the world as a rocker and musician, but you still call the town home. What do you like about the town?

I lived in Westfield for 25 years and now Scotch Plains for 14 years. It is a beautiful, wonderful, peaceful area to call home with so many great restaurants, shops, services and people.

Can you provide a bit of history on your organization?

It first started as a last-minute impulse idea by my brother Greg to fly out and have a pig roast with friends and family, which we did in my house with Bill Kleemeyer roasting a pig on a spit on my back patio. It was an amazing success, with probably 60 people showing up just to have a great time. We had been doing different events to raise money for FCF in honor of Jay and we realized “why not merge the two” and Pig Gig was born. It is the 6th one here in NJ and we will be doing our second one in Arkansas soon.

What drew you to be part of this organization?

We unfortunately became connected with FCF after the passing of Jay Alexander to this rare cancer of the liver that primarily attacks people in their teens and early twenties. We, along with FCF are raising as much money as possible for research in the hopes of saving lives.

What types of tasks do you perform for this group?

The event is a tremendous amount of work setting up all of the entertainment, food, silent auction items and collecting donations. Fortunately, I have a fantastic team of people, Phyllis McQuillan, Al Sellinger, Bill Kleemeyer and others who do an enormous amount of work leading up to the event and then the day before and day of I have many helpers including those mentioned and Greg, Sheila, Brooke and Oria Alexander.

How was the organization impacted by the Pandemic?

We skipped last year completely both here and in Arkansas. Our event in Arkansas is usually held in late spring and because of the pandemic we had to skip this year as well.

How can the community help your organization? Can neighbors get involved?

The best way to help is to attend and or sponsor. Every penny we collect goes to FCF. Tickets are $50, which includes all the food you can eat, a wine & beer bar, and great music with Blue Americana (Oria & I), Glenn Stuart (B Street Band), The Lonesome Pines, The Weeklings and Glenn Alexander & Shadowland with special guest, New Jersey legend Southside Johnny.

Any other information you would like to include?

Yes we want to thank our incredible sponsors that we currently have, all local businesses, which includes Scotch Plains – Fanwood UNICO, Ace Brothers Repairs Inc., K9 Resorts, Health & Fitness Professionals LLC, Bill’s Ineffable Automotive Rehabilitation, Swinetime/Green Village Packing Co., Mountain Deli (Scotch Plains), Romano Landscaping, Craig Stock Landscape Design, NJ Arts.net and Local Media NJ.
