1 CONNECTING MEMBERS A Y STORY Y MEMBERS HONOR 9/11 FIRST RESPONDERS Where were you on 9/11/2001 when you first heard about the twin towers? Everyone can recall where they were or what they were doing when the news broke that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I was a freshman in college. I remember coming back to the dorm and watching the events unfold in the lobby on that tragic day. It’s hard to believe that it has been 18 years since it happened. Every year on 9/11 I would watch the news replay the events and see the images of all the first responders who perished that day. However, it wasn’t until 2 years ago that 9/11 took on a whole new meaning. My gym friend, Mindy, had found an event called the Columbus 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and asked if I wanted join her. The event is held at the Chase building downtown and involved climbing 24 flights of stairs 5 times for a total of 120 flights to replicate the Twin Towers. I’m not known for my cardio at the gym, so this seemed pretty impossible to climb that many stairs. However, I love a good challenge and pushing outside my comfort zone so I hesitantly signed up along with another gym member Danielle. 2 years ago, it was just the 3 of us, along with several hundred other people. This year our group grew to 7 ladies, all members of the YMCA. While we all have different workout goals and abilities, we agreed that if on that awful day so many first responders ran into the towers and climbed those stairs, then so could we. The most meaningful part of the whole climb is when you select a badge with OCTOBER 2019 NEWSLETTER IN THIS ISSUE Page One A Y Story: Y Members Honor 9/11 First Responders Page Two A Y Story: Before & After Care at the Y Before & After School Care The Y on the Road School’s Out Program Halloween at the Y Spooktacular Page Three Bump.Set.Spike Lifeguard Training Rocktober Swim Meet Facility Impact Gymnastics at the Y Page Four Now Drafting: Youth Basketball Parents Night Out Y Western Updates Wellness Coaching Active Adult Card Games Ballroom Dance Lessons and Dance ASHI: CPR/FA/AED Cert Silver Tappers ENJOY THIS ISSUE? the picture and name of a first responder who lost their life that day while trying to save others. You wear the badge during the climb then at the end ring a bell and say their name. The climb is the hardest thing any of us have ever done, but it’s an honor to climb for those that no longer can. My goal is to have the group grow every year and would love to see team Licking County Family YMCA show up. Please consider joining us next year, its an event you won’t forget. http://events.firehero.org/site/TR?fr_id=2104&pg=entry ~Jess

A Y STORY BEFORE & AFTER CARE AT THE Y We have been using the YMCA Before & After school care at Flory Park for a few years now. I have always loved this program and each year I see continued improve-ments. This program really helps working parents due to their hours of operation and reasonable rates. The staff is wonderful, caring and patient. The kids have a routine and know exactly what to do once they arrive at Flory; washing hands, snacks, study time and special play activities. As the #1 concern for parents is safety, right! I’d like to share that the Y staff escorts the children to & from the buses, attendance is taken on a regular basis, there are lock down doors, video security, and they call you in moments if your child does not get off the bus. So it’s recommended to let them know of a sick day or other arrangements were made. From our experience; our son Landon was in kindergarten, 1st day going to Flory after school. The Y Staff called me immediately as our son did not get off the bus there. I called the school, found out there was some confusion. The school located our son after a few phone calls. He was on the wrong bus, wrong route. The driver was able to bring our son to me after she finished her route. If it wasn't for the Y having a dependable staff, I wouldn't have found out until later, and he could have gotten off at the wrong stop. Because the Y staff called me when they did the school was my next call, and they were still open. They called the bus garage, put all drivers on alert. He was found and kept safe till I met up with the bus driver. As parents we fear for the safety of our children in this day and age. I don't have to worry about that with the Before & After program at the YMCA. Thank you for being there and being so helpful to our family. ~Jillian

BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL CARE The YMCA offers child care for children kindergarten through 6th grade. In the Before and After School programs, children are offered a time to participate in both individual and group activities which develop positive self-esteem and incorporate the YMCA’s four core values of car-ing, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Caring staff are available for homework help and provide a nutritious snack to all participants.
