Prerequisites for connecting to the Remote Desktop Environment using VPN
1. A computer with Internet access (does not have to be Government Furnished Equipment)2. A supported smartcard reader3. A HRSA issued PIV card and PIN4. An active HRSA account in good standing5. Windows 7 with SP1 or Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 106. A supported antivirus with active scanning enabled and up-to-date definitions

7. ActivClient Software & patches (admin access required to install) – See Appendix A for installation instructions

Connecting to Remote Desktop using VPN clientStep 1. Insert your PIV card into the PIV card reader.
Step 2. Connect to a reliable Internet source via a LAN connection or a wireless connection.
Step 3. Locate the Cisco AnyConnect icon in the system tray (typically found in the lower right hand
corner of your screen). You may have to select the up arrow to “Show hidden icons”.
Step 4. Right click the Cisco AnyConnect icon and click Connect to launch the VPN client.
Step 5: Enter your PIN number and click OK.
Note: Your PIV card and PIN are required every time you need to access the VPN.

Step 6. Read the banner agreement and click Accept to accept the terms of the disclaimer.
Step 7: After a few seconds, you will see a prompt at the bottom right-hand side of your screen informing you that you are connected to the HRSA network using VPN. The Cisco AnyConnect icon also displays a gold lock when you are connected.

Step 8. Open a browser window and type https://telework.hrsa.gov/ to access the Telework portal. Locate and click the “Remote Desktop Access” button in the middle of the page
Step 9. At the bottom of the screen, a file download message will pop-up. Click Open.

Step 11. The Remote Desktop Connection application window opens. Click the “Show Details” arrow on the bottom left of the window.
Step 12. Select if you want to redirect local drives, PnP devices, and clipboard by checking the appropriate box next to the options, then click Connect.

Step 13. Enter your PIN associated with your PIV card.
Step 14. If there are no errors, you will be presented with the security banner. Click OK to begin working on your remote desktop session.

Step 15. If you receive an error message stating “The requested container does not exist on the smart card”, click OK and go to Step 16.
Step 16. Select your PIV account again, enter your PIN, and click Enter. You will then be able to begin working on your remote desktop session.

Step 2: Click on your username on the top right of the screen and then click on Sign out

Step 4. Right click on the Cisco AnyConnect icon. Click Disconnect.
NOTE: The gold lock on the Cisco AnyConnect icon disappears from the icon when you are disconnected.

Appendix A: ActiveClient Card Reader InstallationIf you have not already installed ActivClient Card Reader Software, please do the following:
1. Connect your computer to the Internet using Internet Explorer.2. Go to https://telework.hrsa.gov/3. Click the “Downloads” tab.4. Download the “ActivClient Card Reader Software” for your respective OS.
(All downloads require a valid HRSA username/password.)5. Install the “ActivClient Card Reader Software” using instructions available at:
https://telework.hrsa.gov/Access/pdf/ActivClientWindowsInstructions.pdf6. Reboot your computer after installation is complete.

Appendix B: VPN Client Installation Step 1. Connect your computer to the Internet using Internet Explorer and go to
https://telework.hrsa.gov/

Step 4. Right-click on the Download button and choose “Save Target As…”

Step 6. Right-click the folder on your desktop for the AnyConnect files, then click on “Extract All…” and extract the files to a folder on your desktop.

Step 8. Double click Setup.exe or the Setup application as shown.
