What is SAP HANA?

SAP HANA is…

… a new database platform from SAP

… an in-memory database

… CPU and cache optimized

… mostly an Appliance that …

• … runs on SLES4SAP, only!

• … has a defined processor architecture E7(Intel Westmere EX, now IVY-Bridge EX)

• … has a defined core-memory ratio(128 GB per Processor for BW and up to 512 GB per CPU for Suite - Westmere)(256 GB per Processor for BW and up to 512/768 GB per CPU for Suite – for IVY-Bridge EX)

Sizing einer SAP HANA

• Neues Projekt (Green Field Approach):

• SAP Quicksizer benutzen

• Geplantes Wachstum in Prozessen, Usern, Systemlebensdauer berücksichtigen

• Geplante Hardware auswählen

How System Replication works?

SAP HANA system replication

• Each service component establishes a connection with its primary system counterpart and requests a snapshot of the data

• All logged changes in the primary system are replicated

• Logs persisted in the primary system, are also sent to the secondary system

Log Replication options:

• Synchronous (mode=sync)

• Synchronous in-memory (mode=syncmem)

• Asynchronous (mode=async)

Log replication mode

sync < 100 0 a few minutes

syncmem <100 0 a few minutes

Linux environments for SAP – before HANA

• The pieces are all there

• ... But you have to combine / integrate them yourself

• ... And you have to support the combination yourself!

• ... And if any one of the components changes, you‘ll do it over again

− And they change often in Linux world!
