It might even feel a little weird that Pentecost is so late; occurring June 9 th this year. The first Pentecost is recorded in the book of Acts and included the rush of a mighty wind with tongues of fire; a most dramatic description of something that surely got the attention of those gathered in that place. Often referred to as the birthday of the institutionalized church, the church recog- nizes this spirit-filled “Pentecostal” moment as an event that may have happened on the fiftieth day after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. I say, “may have happened” because like other holidays, including Christmas and Easter, the date for Pentecost was selected by the early church (4 th century) to commemorate this significant moment in the history of our faith. The date was chosen, based not on when these things actually happened but in order that it (with other observances) may fit into a neat cycle to annually enact and celebrate in the course of year; a year that begins with the Advent stories and culminates in the Season of Pentecost. There is a certain irony that I bring up a tardy Pentecost. Fitting as I reflect on a certain spiritual longing that many of us our feeling as we consider the times we are living in. Pentecosts and reformations are those things or types of events that ultimately “move” people to change. In our times, may we therefore consider becoming “activists” for a major moral transformation for all things good and true. We can’t force the winds of the spirit to blow but we can be open and ready for a new movement that will be about transforming minds, bodies, and spirits to work for the gospel call for justice and liberty for all. A Newsletter for the Members & Friends of Plymouth Congregational UCC, Burlington, WI WORDS FROM WANG – “Pentecost is Late This Year Too”

Last evening Judy and I had chili for dinner. I loved Judy’s comment as with a sarcastic tone she stated, “nothing says Memorial Day like chili.” From the long winter and slow coming of spring to the celebrated holidays, 2019 has been a year of lateness. It might even feel a little weird that Pentecost is so late; occurring June 9th this year.

The first Pentecost is recorded in the book of Acts and included the rush of a mighty wind with tongues of fire; a most dramatic description of something that surely got the attention of those gathered in that place. It was also the moment when those followers of Jesus began to speak in many languages and also received other spiritual gifts.

Most of you already know that Pentecost ("the fiftieth day") is annually celebrated as a Christian holiday commemorating the presence of the Holy Spirit as it moved through that room filled with believers; deepening their belief and understanding of the Spirit of the Living God.

Often referred to as the birthday of the institutionalized church, the church recog-nizes this spirit-filled “Pentecostal” moment as an event that may have happened on the fiftieth day after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. I say, “may have happened” because like other holidays, including Christmas and Easter, the date for Pentecost was selected by the early church (4th century) to commemorate this significant moment in the history of our faith.

I was blessed recently to be able to attend the Festival of Homiletics in Minneapolis which featured some of the most renowned preachers of who repre-sented many of our mainline progressive traditions. A highlight was hearing the Rev. William Barber preach on the topic of “We Need A Moral Pentecost.” The title speaks for itself and will be the focus of my sermon on June 9th; hopefully I’ve piqued your interest.

WHO WANTS TO GO TO GENERAL SYNOD? – June 23rd

First, what is General Synod? It is the biannual meeting of the entire United Church of Christ. With our national headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio, every other year the leadership of the UCC chooses a site and plans for these events to conduct business, offer workshops, feature renowned keynote speakers, and share in awe-inspiring worship services. Conferences and Associations around the country select delegates to represent them in order to vote on whatever issues and business is being conducted. By now most have heard that for the first time in our 62 year history as a denomination, General Synod is being held in Wisconsin; downtown Milwaukee (yes, exactly one year prior to the Democratic National Convention). Synod runs June 21-25. Though anyone can attend as a registered visitor, Pastor Bob is planning on renting a 15-passenger van and inviting the first 14 people who sign up to join him in attending the public worship service on Sunday June 23rd. The Rev. Traci Blackman, UCC General Minister for Justice. The plan is to depart from the church shortly after our morning worship and arrive in Milwaukee with enough time to grab a bit to eat and get a seat in the Conference center. There is also a street fair for attendees of General Synod which is a quasi-summer fest type of event featuring local Wisconsin foods and entertainment. The street fair begins as 4:30 but we can plan our return trip any time after that. All this is free but there will be an offering during worship. Any interested persons should sign up on the clipboard notify the office. Our deadline for signing up is June 19th.

Plymouth Praise – Summer Music

We are signed up to do special music for July 7. We will plan on having our usual rehearsal the Sunday prior. Hope most of our musicians will be available those two dates. Here’s wishing all a happy and restful summer.

Our Plymouth Praise Band prepares and leads worship once a month with more contemporary songs, typically, on the fourth Sunday of the month. We are al-ways open to new folk joining us. No experience necessary; just a heart for music-making and a willingness to spend a little time in preparation.

They also have a pond, in addition to a swimming pool and a large shade tree to escape the hot summer sun. We wish to thank Scott and his family for their incredibly generous hospitality over the years. We have so many wonderful memories at Wilson’s Pond! THANK YOU SCOTT!!!

Mark your calendar for Sunday, July 21 to worship at a new pond and picnic at the Keller’s. Bring a dish to pass and lawn chairs as usual, as well as bathing suits if desired. Directions will be available at church a few weeks prior to the event.

New Office Communication Notebook

On the ledge of the window in front of the church office you will find a pen and small notebook. This should be used to notify the church staff of information that you wish to relay when you are in church on Sundays, or even through the week (during choir/bell rehearsals, LOGOS or other meetings). Beth, Steph and Pastor Bob work hard to remember all those little things that are communicated to us on Sundays, but let’s face it….none of us are getting any younger and our memories sometimes fail us!

Information that would be appropriate for the notebook would include, but not limited to:

“I’m having surgery this week” “I switched usher duties with John Smith in June” “We are almost out of napkins for fellowship” “There is a light bulb burned out in the parlor bathroom” “I need a new financial statement for my taxes” Or even as simple as “Please call me on Monday”

Obviously other people will have access to the notebook, so private information should not be included. This provides you a way to communicate with us about church business when you are here and thinking about it, but allow us to be “fellow worshippers” instead of church staff on Sunday mornings. This is simply a means of keeping those little details from getting lost between church on Sunday and our work day on Monday.

Thanks so much for your consideration of this additional communication tool. What you have to share with us is important and we don’t want to forget it!!

Mothers and Earth: A Celebration of the Music of John Denver Thanks to all who attended. We raised around $400 for our

two charities. The spirit of that event will certainly carry over; perhaps even into a worship service this summer. Tell your friends there is a very good chance we will be doing the JD Christmas special in December as well. Stay tuned (pun intended).

Save the Date!! July 13th Once again we will be going to volunteer at Feed My Starving Children in Libertyville, Illinois on Saturday, July 13. We will gather at the church at 8 am to carpool and arrive there by 9 am. We volunteer for two hours and we're back in Burlington around noon. If you haven't come to this event before we hope you will give it a try. It's a thrilling experience to see how many nourishing dry meals we can pack in this short time. Everyone is welcome but the youngest must be at least 6 years old and with an adult. Please consider coming along and sign up in the Church Office. We have reserved 20 slots and need a final count by July 7. Any questions, give Jackie Kastengren a call at 534-3949 .

Souls 4 Souls We completed the gently used shoe collection the end of April and delivered 98 pairs to the project in Milwaukee. Some of these shoes will be used in the inner city and some may be sent on to other locations of need. What a great way to clean out our closets and share with those in need. Many thanks to all who participated.

Shoebox Collection Items for June: t-shirts (short and long sleeved)

Thank you to all involved in celebrating my Heritage with Plymouth Church and my 99th birthday. The cake was delicious and all your greetings with so many birthday cards were enjoyed with my daughter and her husband. It was a great day. - Gladys Bublitz

To the Choir, I would like to say thank you so much for your dedication to enhancing worship this year! It is a pure joy to work with you, pray with you and laugh with you every Tuesday evening. You are a wonderful group of humans who make my life better and you certainly enhance worship with each one of your gifts. Thank you for your time and dedication to spreading the joy of music and the word of Christ. Can't wait to see you again in the fall! - In Harmony, Jamie Edwards

My name is Payton Campbell and I am from Burlington, but currently a sophomore at UW-Whitewater, majoring in Social Work with a minor in Special Education. When I graduate I hope to be working in a hospital. I would like to thank you for the care package that I received from you! It sure did brighten up my day! With college finals coming up, it will help me through my all-nighters when I need to energize or for the days when I totally forget to eat a real meal! The prayer that was in the card will be used all the time before my exams coming up in the next couple weeks. Thank you again for the package, it really does help college students. I hope everyone is doing great, I do miss everyone’s smiling faces. This summer I’ll be working as a Camp Project Specialist. I’ll be living in the dorms all summer working for the UW-Whitewater housing. I am very excited about this job. If I don’t see you all this summer, enjoy the warm weather and have a great summer! - Payton Campbell
