In fact, there are some books of the Old (Hebrew) Testament (i.e., Proverbs, Job, Ecclesiastes, some Psalms, some books of the Apocrypha) that are referred to as “wisdom literature.” And certainly, Jesus’ teachings, as well as some of the reflections of Paul and the other epistle writers, have elements of wisdom to them. Stereotypically when we think about wisdom we think of an older venerated person who offers some pearls of wise sayings and teaches by example how to live a good and worthy life. The same was true back in ancient times. As we generally understand it now, the object of the Hebrew sage is to transmit the lessons of experience, so that one may learn to cope with life, and to help inculcate certain goals (self-control, especially in speech, honesty, diligence, etc.). The “spirit of wisdom” is a gift from God (Ephesians 1:17) for everyday living. Wisdom is not just about big issues (meaning of life) but about the daily (can I right a wrong, how do I deal with diminished capacities that may come with aging body and/or mind, what do I do next in my life, how do I deal with personal memories brought up by #metoo…). February 2018From the Pastor’s Desk:

The various voices in the bible talk a lot about wisdom.

I am inviting you to join me in doing a bold thing. I want us to talk about wisdom, what it is and what it means. Lent is coming up, starting with Ash Wednesday on February 14 th (ashes to ashes…a life spanned in love). Typical Lenten themes deal with repentance, which means turning back to God. Often in our lives we get stuck in ruts, patterns of behavior that take us away from where we want to be, who we want to be (for example, we want to be kind, but certain people or circumstances always get us so that we find ourselves responding out of anger and meanness, rather than the kindness we would like to offer and God calls us to offer). Maybe part of repentance (turning back to God’s ways) is about finding some help to get out of our ruts or automatic patterns, finding a way to say “stop” when we realize we are on a bad autopilot sequence and building new pathways that bring us closer to that “wonder and awe” of God’s ways (which is really what “fear of the Lord” means).

So, let’s talk about wisdom, what it is and how it can better help us in our everyday lives, on the Sundays of Lent. We’ll begin in earnest on February 25th, the second Sunday of Lent (we have a special preacher joining us for the first Sunday of Lent). I’ll include prayers and readings that touch on wisdom, and seek to bring in some words of wisdom from various sources into my sermons.

1

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who

practice it have a good understanding. God’s praise endures

forever. – Psalm 111:10

Page 2: The Plymouth Bell€¦  · Web view3/2/2018  · The Plymouth Bell . Plymouth Congregational. United Church of Christ. 2401 Atwood Avenue, Madison, WI 53704 web site:

You are invited to reflect on what words of wisdom others have shared with you, or you have shared with others that have been helpful, and to share these with the congregation (some crowd-sourcing after the sermon, and also there will be something for you to write down words of wisdom to share [maybe if we get enough, we can put together a booklet of Plymouth wisdom?]). It may seem awfully bold and brazen to think we could cover wisdom over 12-15 minutes over a few Sundays, so we do so with the understanding (wisdom?) that this is only the beginning of the

conversation. But is conversation worth having, especially in such a time as this, when we are not only struggling with everyday life, but with how to deal with bombardments of things/revelations that make us question who we are and what has happened to us and what will be to come and what it means to be a spiritual person in a secular world.

Peace and blessings,

Church School NewsDuring the Annual Meeting on January

28th, the Church School children created valentines which will be sent to our

homebound members and other Plymouth folk who are unable to attend worship regularly. Thanks to all the

youth for participating, and special thanks to the Middle School class for leading by example and for helping the younger children.

February brings the new season of Lent in the church year beginning with Ash Wednesday, February 14th. Church School classes will be learning about the season and putting

our faith into action with a Lenten mission project. (The specific project has yet to be chosen; watch for more information in the weekly bulletin and in the March Bell.)

On February 11th, our One Room Sunday School session will be led by the Plymouth Immigration Group, as we learn more about the lives of the immigrants, refugees and “Dreamers” who are our neighbors.

Plymouth’s Book Club Meets at Noon on the First Wednesday of the Month

Some months we meet in the lounge for a brown bag book discussion, and other months we hold our discussions downstairs near the kitchen while enjoying a potluck lunch. We usually take a summer recess in July and August. Here is what we are reading and discussing for the next few months: On February 7th, we’ll meet downstairs for a potluck lunch and discussion of Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond. March 7th will find the group in the lounge, discussing another nonfiction title, Linda Lawrence Hunt’s Bold Spirit: Helga Estby’s Forgotten Walk Across Victorian America. And on April 4th we’ll potluck again, while discussing The Queen of Katwe by Tim Crothers.

In February and March, we’ll also discuss our last chapters in Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, and we’ll decide which book to read a “chapter a month” from next. For more information on specific chapters, or the books we are considering, check out the posting on the Education Team bulletin board in Fellowship Hall, or talk to book club members Leslie Schenk, Sally Curran Wolf, or Ann Lacy.

Women’s Wild Winter WeekendOnline Registration Available

It’s time to make plans to attend the Women’s Wild Winter Weekend at Moon Beach Camp.  All women of Plymouth Church are invited.  There are two identical events being held on successive weekends.  We are choosing the first weekend, Friday to Sunday, February 23-25, 2018.  However, you may also select the second weekend – March 2-4, 2018.

Registration for all Outdoor Ministry events is online via www.ucci.org.  When you log in, you will create your personal account and password.  Be sure to check the box that you belong to a UCC church and later identify “Madison Plymouth Cong. UCC, SW Association” from the dropdown menu. When you identify Plymouth Church, you will receive a UCC discount on the total cost which includes lodging, meals, snacks, and programming.  You can pay just the deposit of $50 or pay the total cost of $226 (prior to a discount of $30 provided by the Wisconsin Conference UCC Southwest Association) with your credit card.  If you’d like to register on a paper form, copies are posted on the Christian Education bulletin board in fellowship hall along with a sign-up sheet to indicate your participation. We will ride together in a van

to Moon Beach, leaving Friday morning.

Be prepared for a weekend you won’t forget!  The leaders always plan lots of great things for us.  You’ll be enriched, enlightened and uplifted.  Your stay will include singing, fellowship, crafts, group activities, quiet time, worship, and motivational sessions.  Every year the large

puzzle is a challenge and must be completed before we can leave camp!  You can have an active time or personal quiet space.  The inviting Comfort Corner will pamper you as you deserve to be. There’s a sauna, silent auction, lodge fireplace conducive to reading, and napping, and Sunday morning worship with communion.  Mealtimes are always special events with scrumptious menus planned especially for us.  Our book discussion this year will be about Wonder, which you can get from the public library.

The WWWWs are popular events which draw together UCC women from throughout the state.  Over a hundred women from Plymouth Church have shared this “wild” adventure and enjoyed a memorable get-away during those long winter days.  You can create the weekend time to fulfill your individual needs – from quiet, personal reflection, meditation and rest in the Northwoods, to joyous laughter with old and new friends.  Can you hear Moon Beach calling YOU?

Promised Land Celebration, February 25 Conversations with Immigrants and DREAMERs

Sunday afternoon, February 25th, Plymouth’s Congregation is hosting promised land conversations with immigrants and DREAMERs among us. The invitation has gone out to many other faith communities and community organizations. The event is a big deal and has the potential for changing lives.

Plymouth Church declared itself to be an “Immigrant Welcoming Congregation” at the 2017 Annual Meeting one year ago. We publicly acknowledged that we are a part of an enlightened story that informs who we are and

what we are about as a people of God.

We are each one of us descendants of immigrants whether they came to this land 400 years ago or last year. We share a memory, however dim, of what it is like to be strangers in a strange land.

Jon joins DREAMERS sending a message to Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House from

9

Janesville, WI. Both parents of the DREAMER on the left are working every day supporting her studies at UW-Madison. If she loses her DACA status she will not be able to attend law school.

Once Hebrew slaves had settled into a land God had promised they were instructed as follows:

“When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him/her wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him/her as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt” (Lev. 19:33-34).

Laura Stalder and grandchildren stand with the DREAMERS.

We imagine the United States as a promised land. We are fond of quoting Emma Lazarus whose poem appears on the Statue of Liberty:

"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

The afternoon begins with a light luncheon at noon followed by the conversations that are to wrap up no later than 3:00 p.m. The conversations are a way for the congregation to live into and begin to live out its declaration that we are an “Immigrant Welcoming Congregation.” The hope is that the afternoon will begin to build relationships with immigrants and DREAMERs and then to make a start at identifying ways the Plymouth congregation and the wider community may stand in solidarity with these neighbors.

You may help with the hosting simply by turning up for starters. You might also assist by setting up for the day or being a greeter or preparing and serving the meal or cleaning up after the event.

Maybe 150 enthusiastic people gathered January 19 in the capitol rotunda supporting DREAMERS and others protected by the law covering undocumented Childhood Arrivals. The young woman pictured here shared her story. She is a PhD candidate at UW-Madison. If she loses her DACA standing she will have to drop out of school. When she was cited for a traffic

Volunteer Survey for Dane Sanctuary CoalitionIn 2017, Plymouth Church committed to be a Supporting Congregation to the Madison faith

communities that are Host Congregations, and as such are able to provide physical sanctuary to our immigrant friends and neighbors who are at risk for deportation. A resource list of potential volunteers is currently being organized so that support can be immediately accessed, and basic needs met, should an individual or family enter sanctuary. Plymouth members are encouraged to complete a volunteer survey form (located in the narthex and included in this newsletter – next page). There are many ways that you can be of help!

My Brain Ain’t Working by Donna Salzwedel

I have always tried to follow the rule I learned in English and Speech classes: “Begin your article with something clever or interesting to grab the readers’ attention and make them want to read more.” If I remember correctly, they called it a “hook”.

This year, my brain ain’t working – I got no “hook”! I suppose a hook isn’t necessary if you have information to pass on that people are interested in. So, I hope you are interested in knowing about the Mitten and Hat Sale, and the Mitten Tree.

The sale during Advent didn’t break any records, but that doesn’t matter. I don’t care! That’s not important! What does matter is this: because Meg Shepherd diligently and lovingly worked all year to create beautiful hats and scarves, and because others (members and non-members of our church) added their handmade mittens and scarves, we had a beautiful collection and variety of items for sale.

~ AND ~

Because so many of you stopped to look at and then purchase items, Meg and I were able to give the church $420.00. That’s what I think is important.

Do you know what else I think is important! So many of you not only purchased a hat or mittens at the sale, but you took them right over to and hung them on the Mitten Tree. What a beautiful sight it was to see the tree overflowing with warmth and love in the form of hats, mittens, scarves, and socks.

13

Page 14: The Plymouth Bell€¦  · Web view3/2/2018  · The Plymouth Bell . Plymouth Congregational. United Church of Christ. 2401 Atwood Avenue, Madison, WI 53704 web site:

I always look forward to emptying the tree and counting the items, so you can know how much love you helped to collect. This year, I’m happy to say we had: 30 scarves, 23 hats, 59 mittens, and 7 socks. Thank you for sharing your love in this way.

Meg and I decided to send this year’s items to the reservation as a tribute to Jane Rowe, who for many years quietly took these items from the Mitten Tree, packed them, and shipped them to the school and children she loved.

I want to acknowledge and thank Jane’s partner, Carol Berglund, for helping and supporting Jane in this mission, and continuing that support by packing and shipping the items this year.

After completing a pair of mittens, I will often think about the little hands that will be in them. I don’t usually think about all the people involved in making that happen. I want to take a moment now to acknowledge and thank you and all the others who make it happen.

The Mission of Plymouth Congregational UCC

To joyfully celebrate God’s love and the gospel of Jesus Christ in our worship, our teaching, and our lives;

To create a diverse, accepting faith community that welcomes all and empowers all to accept the grace God freely offers to each of us, no matter who we are or where we are in life’s spiritual journey; and

To develop, demonstrate, and strengthen Christian discipleship by reaching out to all God’s people, caring for those in need, and seeking to lead the world toward love, justice, and peace.

Adopted by Church Council on August 16, 2007
