They even disagreed about how to light the Chanukah lights! The school of Shammai argued that we should start with eight candles and decrease the number of candles as the days of Chanukah progress. The school of Hillel on the other hand said we should start with one candle on the first day and increase the number of candles each day. As most will realize the school of Hillel won out and it is that practice that we follow today. But what was the argument really about? The Talmud explains that the followers of Shammai saw the Chanukah lights as representing the upcoming days of the festival -- the number of days still to come; thus, each night we would light one less candle to show that another day had passed. The view of Hillel, on the other hand, was that the lights represented Chanukah's outgoing days, so that each new light indicated another day of Chanukah achieved. As is often the case Shammai’s opinion reflects a strict sacred reality – each day of a festival that passes is one less day of holiness, one less day of light. It reflects the reality that each day that goes by, whether mundane or holy, cannot be reclaimed and is gone forever along with all its potential, all the things we could have done but didn’t. Hillel’s views, on the other hand, represents the hope that we can always increase the light when the next day comes. It does not look back to what could have been done but wasn’t – it looks forward to the light we can create the next day and the next. For us as Jews today both views have important symbolic significance. Light is a powerful symbol of holiness, and all that is good. Our task in life is to bring more light – more holiness, compassion and justice – into the world. We should always recognize the reality of Shammai’s view – we have a responsibility to do what is right and to do it now because once the chance to do a particular mitzvah, to do right in a particular situation, has passed, it cannot be reclaimed. It can be fixed and made better, but THAT opportunity is gone forever. But, Hillel’s view reminds us that no matter what we have done, or failed to do, there is always hope that we can do what is right and do better the next day. If we were to follow Shammai’s view, in candle lighting and in life, we would always be looking back, kicking ourselves for what we have failed to do. But Hillel’s view tells us that we must never give up hope – we must always look forward to the light we can bring into the world today and tomorrow. Happy Chanukah., Rabbi Emaneul RABBI’S MESSAGE

In the Talmud there were two rabbis, Hillel and Shammai, who argued about everything (how very Jewish!) and after them their schools continued to debate and disagree on almost every matter of Jewish law. They even disagreed about how to light the Chanukah lights! The school of Shammai argued that we should start with eight candles and decrease the

number of candles as the days of Chanukah progress.

Happy Chanukah., Rabbi Emaneul

As I write this article, our congregation is recovering from all that is Food Fest. I have not seen financial reports, but I am sure we made a nice profit. Honestly though, I am more excited about the intangible gains from the weekend. First, the benefits to our congregation beyond the monetary ones are great. The team work that is required of our small Jewish community to pull off an event of this size is considerable. Every child, sisterhood spouse and most importantly, each Sisterhood member is there for us, in numerous aspects. Our working together strengthens our bond to each other- an important benefit of the Food Fest Weekend. Second, the Food Fest is a great gift to our Corpus Christi community. We are given the opportunity to teach our neighbors about our heritage and traditions. The Sanctuary tours were a great addition to the Food Fest Weekend and our thanks go out to Rabbi Emanuel for tackling the job with enthusiasm. The opportunity to teach about Judaism through food, music, gifts and conversation will always be a very positive aspect of the Food Fest. Thanks to every congregant, but especially to Sisterhood for providing us with this very wonderful PR tool. (and some fabulous food) November also offered the Joint Thanksgiving celebration with The Church of the Good Shepherd. Thanks to all who attended and welcomed our neighbors in yet another demonstration of Good Will to our community.

December is another busy month at Congregation Beth Israel. We are partnering with the JCC to have a Chanukah celebration on Wednesday, December 17. We will also have our Family Shabbat dinner on December 12 and the religious school will also celebrate the holiday as well. There are plenty of opportunities to say Happy Chanukah to fellow congregants. Please join us as often as possible. December will also be the beginning of meetings for our Outreach committee. This group will be tasked with formulating ideas on how to reach out to both unaffiliated Jews in the community and the less involved members within our own CBI family. If you have interest in helping with this project, please just let me know. Stay warm and healthy this month, and visit Congregation Beth Israel often!!

Shalom, Suzy Hilliard CBI President

FoodFest 2014 has come and gone, and while we are still crunching numbers to assess exactly what our profit margin is for this year, we can safely say that it was a HUGE success. The old saying “It takes a

whole village” is never truer than when it comes to FoodFest, and once again, the dedication, hard work and creativity of everyone in our congregation should bring great pride to us all. Although we may be small in numbers, we are truly mighty in spirit.

Of course the main purpose for putting on FoodFest for these many years is to make money, and every year we have been very fortunate in that regard. However, perhaps the far greater benefit is the way this amazing event brings us all together to interact as one strong force to make it happen, and also allows our small synagogue to interact in such a positive way with the greater community.

We are always reluctant to single out individuals to thank because so many people do so much that there is always the danger of leaving someone out. Still, we must take the chance because without the amazing dedication and over-the-top hard work of some, FoodFest simply would NOT have happened. SPECIAL THANKS must go to Andy and Tobi Taubman, Julia Noble, Chip and Barb Schwamb, Susan and Bill Martin, Robin and Bill Adams, Ann Engel, Rikki Schmitchel and family, Chris and Robert Adler, Amy Krams, Laura Hausman, David Jacobs, Mike Hiatt, Phyllis Roseman, Catherine Susser, Carol Solovey, and Jaki Hausman.

As we wrap up another year, we are so proud to have had the opportunity to work with every one of you. Thank you for your time, your energy, your ideas, and most of all for helping to make us all look good!

Sincerely, Jana Zager, Rikki Schmitchel, and Chris Kuehn (FoodFest Chairs) Chris Adler, Brittany Sandbach and Susan Martin (Sisterhood Presidents)

$$$ FUND FACTS $$$

As Treasurer of CBI, here is the featured fund for this month, with information of the purpose of the fund. Please keep these various funds in mind as you make contributions to our congregation and earmark your payment if you want your contribution made to a particular fund.

Goodman/Groner/Train Youth Education This fund is used for religious school and youth activities. These monies offset the expense of COFTY members’ attendance at regional conferences, as well as paying chaperone expenses. These conferences help introduce our children to other Jewish children throughout our region. Our children enjoy the interaction with the many other attendees at these events. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact myself or Suzy Hilliard. Robin Adams

Lighting the Hanukkah Candles

Light the first Hanukkah candle on Tuesday, December 16th. Here’s the simple rule for how to do it right. Place the first candle on the right side of the Hanukkiyah (a menorah, but with nine branches, not seven). Use the shamash (servant candle) to light it. On the second night, add a candle to the left of the first one, but light the newest candle first, then move to the right and light the older one. With each successive night, add to the left, but light to the right. Got it? Good!

There are three blessings to be said on the first night of Hanukkah, then two on all subsequent nights.

Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech Ha-Olam, Asher Kidshanu B’mitzvotav V’tzeevanu L’hadlik Ner Shel Hanukkah. We praise You, Adonai, our G-d, Ruler of the universe, who has made us holy through commandments and ordained that we kindle the Hanukkah lights. Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech Ha-Olam, She-ah-sah Neeseem Lavoteinu Bayah-meem Haheym Baz’man Hazeh. We praise You, Adonai, our G-d, Ruler of the universe, who performed miracles for our ancestors in those days at this time in the year. And only on the first night, we say: Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech Ha-Olam, Shehecheyanu Vekeeyemanu Vehigeeyanu Laz’man Hazeh. We praise You, Adonai, Our G-d, Ruler of the universe, who has kept us in life and sustained us and permitted us to reach this joyous time. The Rabbi, Officers, Board and Members of Congregation Beth Israel join in wishing each other a very happy and joyous Hanukkah.

November was a short month for Religious School but we were able to pack in a lot! We had a great visit with our ISJL Fellow, Alachua Haskins during Food Fest weekend. Apart from delivering a great D’var Torah at Shabbat services on Friday night, she joined the classrooms on Sunday to give a short briefing on how to use the Behrman House Online Learning Center that the Hebrew students now have the capabilities of accessing from home in order to practice their Hebrew studies. Also, to learn about Israeli culture and food, she created a fun, hands-on project where the students made “chocolate falafel” in conjunction with the Food Fest going on outside the classrooms doors. Alachua will be here again in the spring to continue her work with us, so please watch out for information on her visit. If you would like to know more about Camp Young Judea, please join us in the main sanctuary on December 7th at 11:00 as a representative from CYJ will be here with a short presentation. On December 12th, we will have a student-led Shabbat service during our regularly scheduled Family Shabbat. Please make every effort to attend so your child has the opportunity to practice what he/she has learned. Please join CBI at the JCC on December 17th for a community Hanukkah party. Our fourth and fifth grade

Religious School students will put on a skit and there will also be fun activities and food to enjoy! Mark your calendars…there will be NO RELIGIOUS SCHOOL on December 21st or 28th. Classes will resume January 4th, 2015. Wishing you and your family a HAPPY HANUKKAH!
