Dear Reader –One of the most important things we can do as we age in

order to remain happy and healthy long-term is to engage with others on a regular basis. The busier we keep ourselves in our older years, the more we can enjoy a higher quality of life. Yet, many of the activities we used to do or those that we might like to do, are not always accessible. That is where Berks Encore can help! We provide an opportunity for older adults to get active, enjoy various social activities, and to improve their quality of life.

The simplest description of a Berks Encore senior center is a location in which seniors come together. Our goal is to provide a physical location for older adults to come together. We strive to offer specialized programs designed to meet the needs of those who attend the location. For this reason, there are dozens of programs available, and each of our locations can be significantly different from the next location.

For seniors who are looking for something to do to stay busy or those who want to meet new people, visiting a Berks Encore center is an option. Our centers provide an opportunity to connect with others who are around the same age while also providing an opportunity for you to learn something new. Programs vary significantly, but most offer a variety of options to appeal to a larger audience.

Each location offers programs and events that locals want to see available. The programs offered are often based on the individual needs of those who attend and those who volunteer for them. Here is just a sample of what you might find.

Meal and Nutrition Programs – join us for lunch and try out some of our new menu items, or join us for an educational program about eating well or eating for specific reasons, such as to avoid disease or to manage weight loss goals.

Fitness and Wellness Programs – Because staying active and fit is so important for our well-being at all ages, we make these programs available on a daily basis. We offer less-physical programs, such as yoga and sit and get fit, as well as zumba, drumming, and so much more.

Read through the following pages, and pay particular attention to the pages dedicated to our six senior centers. I am certain you will agree with me when I say that we truly do offer something for everyone!

Sincerely,LuAnn Oatman, President/CEO

RIAL

Dementia Live Experience Is Eye-Openingby Lori Gerhart, Editor

When the first group arrived at Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center for the be@nite program called Dementia Live – they weren’t sure what they were in for – but they had a common reason for being there. The first four attendees that night were actually 2 sets of siblings, each who had received a dementia diagnosis for their mother. That’s why Nancy & Richard and Jill & Robyn had come out on a frigid January evening to see what Dementia Live was all about.

After the 30 minute experience, they described feeling scared, frustrated, confused, angry, overwhelmed, anxious and inadequate when being asked to perform 5 simple tasks that they could have aced any other day of the week – but with the simulation of sensory changes that many experience with aging and dementia, they had difficulty in completing even 2 or 3 of the tasks.

Wearing vision impairing goggles, gloves and head phones that were playing a background noise track –they were given 5 tasks and then sent into a room to complete them. Buttoning a shirt, folding pillow cases, counting change, sorting a deck of cards, feeding the cat, taking a pill – all became more challenging. Just remembering or hearing the instructions proved to be a challenge.

They all walked away with a new sense of how their loved one might feel as she progresses with the disease. Richard was especially vocal of the insight he gained. He suggested that he has to be more understanding and

patient, where he is often frustrated with things his mother says or does, and becomes angry with her. All of them agreed it has given them a new understanding of the compassion, patience and understanding it is going to take to care for their loved one.

Dementia Live was created by a woman who took the journey of caring for a father who had Alzheimer’s and a mother who had Parkin-son’s disease. As a result, it led her to join other professionals to develop and present educational programs to help care-givers deal with similar

life challenges. Berks Encore has certified trainers for Dementia Live and can provide this experience for civic groups, professional caregiving staffs, first responders, and nursing students for a nominal fee.

If you are interested in bringing Dementia Live to your organization, please contact Kathy Roberts, Berks Encore Health & Wellness Educator at 610-374-3195 ext. 230 or email [email protected].

Jamal is a special young man. At 24 years of age, he’s lived his whole life in Berks County. He went to school at John Paul II Center and loves going to church with his grandma. They attend the First Century Worship Center on Eleventh Street in Reading where Jamal looks forward to hearing Pastor Jack give the sermon each week.

These days, when he goes to Prospectus Berco Monday through Friday, he has a new job that he also looks forward to. Within the last year, Prospectus Berco, a non-profit organization that provides services to meet the needs of adults with disabilities, has begun offering opportunities for their program participants to volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Most of the time, they are working from the Reading Center at North Ninth Street, where along with an instructor who is the driver, handle the delivery of meals to homebound seniors. Jamal is one of those volunteers and he tells me that his new “job” makes him feel good. He tells me he likes to talk to the people

that he meets when he delivers meals. He is happy to get to know the people on a route - they recognize him and greet him with “Have a Good Day” and “Thank you”.

When he first started on the”job”, he may have been a little nervous as he told his grandma that he said prayers for his new job. But no worries, he takes his work very seriously. Naimah Livingston is the instructor working with him and she tells me how rewarding it is to see how much the program participants enjoy delivering the meals and meeting the clients. Jamal also helps with the volunteer grocery shop-ping program.

Heather Grasso , adult training associate director for Prospectus Berco said,” We look to find opportunities for the program participants to build relationships and engage in the community.” In fact, the organization’s mission is to inspire people with special needs to lead meaningful lives by providing innovative support.

As I look across the table at Jamal, who is smiling from ear to ear, I am pretty sure

he is inspired by the work that he is doing for Berks Encore and whether or not he realizes just how meaningful it is to those seniors citizens that wait for him to deliver a meal – he has found a meaningful way to engage in his community! All of us at Berks Encore are so grateful to Jamal and the other volunteers participating through Prospectus Berco and we know the seniors that we are serving are grateful too!

If you are interested in finding out about volunteer opportunities with Berks Encore, please contact Rita Phillips, Director of Volunteers , at 610-374-3195 ext. 225. We can always use your help!

So many of our readers contact us each day asking what else can you do to help Berks Encore? Well, there is something very simple you can do that truly makes an impact for us! Don’t throw out your Redner’s receipts! Each year, Redner’s Warehouse Markets donates thousands of dollars to non-profits throughout their local communities with it’s Save-A-Tape Program. For anyone not familiar with the program, a customer can sign up to be a member of the Save-A-Tape Program at any Redner’s grocery store or Redner’s Quick Shoppe. Once a member, by shopping at Redner’s, saving your receipts, and providing the receipts to a non-profit organi-zation participating in the program, the organization benefits by receiving 1% of the total of the receipts from Redner’s!

Berks Encore has benefited immensely from this program over the last few years and can continue to grow donations with your help! Please save your Redner’s tapes and spread the word to others to save their tapes – gather them up and send them to our address at 40 North 9th St., Reading, PA 19601. You may even drop them off at any of our 6 senior centers conveniently located throughout Berks County: Birdsboro, Fleetwood, Shillington, Reading, Strausstown and Wernersville (please check the middle section of this publication for addresses, phone numbers and hours of operation). If you have too many to send through the mail, or

can’t drop them off at one of our facilities, please contact me at 610-374-3195 ext. 223 and I will arrange to have them picked up.

Redner’s Warehouse Markets partners with Berks Encore in many other ways throughout the year, including being the title sponsor, along with Ensure and Glucerna, of our Senior Expo. We are very fortunate to have such a philanthropic organization in our community! Please patronize them when you can, and if you haven’t tried their amazing, in-store popped popcorn yet, you are really missing out on something special!

On another note, on behalf of Berks Encore, I’d like to thank each and every one of you who generously donated to our year-end appeal! Your support means the world to us and with it, we will continue to assist seniors in Berks County to live happier, healthier, and more confident lives. We are working on several initiatives this year that will continue to enrich the lives of seniors, and your continuous support in the way of donations, volunteerism, and partnership will allow us to be very successful as we imple-ment these initiatives and continue to be able to provide critical programs and services.

H Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)Compiled by Kathy Roberts, Berks Encore Health & Wellness Educator

WHAT IS CHF? Congestive HEART FAILURE or heart failure is a condition in which the heart is unable to adequately pump blood throughout the body and/or is unable to prevent blood from backing up into the lungs. Heart failure does not mean the heart has stopped working. Rather, it means that the heart is working less efficiently than normal. Blood moves through the heart and body at a slower rate, and the pressure in the heart increases. As a result, fluid builds up in the arms, legs, ankles, feet, lungs, or other organs, the body becomes “Congestive.”

What are the symptoms of CHF? You may not have any symptoms of heart failure, or

the symptoms may be mild to severe. Symptoms may be constant or may come and go. • Congested lungs. Fluid backup in the lungs can cause shortness of

breath with exercise or difficulty breathing at rest or when lying flat in bed. Lung congestion can also cause a dry, hacking cough or wheezing.

• Fluid and water retention. Less blood to your kidneys causes fluid and water retention, resulting in swollen ankles, legs, abdomen (called edema), and weight gain. Symptoms may cause an increased need to urinate during the night. Bloating in your stomach may cause a loss of appetite or nausea.

• Dizziness, fatigue, and weakness. Less blood to your major organs and muscles makes you feel tired and weak. Less blood to the brain can cause dizziness or confusion.

• Rapid or irregular heartbeats. The heart beats faster to pump enough blood to the body. This can cause a rapid or irregular heartbeat.

Risk Factors for CHF -A single risk factor may be enough to cause heart failure,

but a combination of factors increases your risk.• High blood pressure • Coronary artery disease • Heart attacks • Irregular heart beat • Diabetes • Sleep apnea • Alcohol use • Smoking

• Viruses • Kidney conditions • Congenital heart

defects

How is CHF diagnosed? Your doctor will ask you many questions about your

symptoms and medical history. You will be asked if you have any conditions that may cause heart failure (coronary artery disease, angina, diabetes, heart valve disease, high blood pressure). You will be asked if you smoke, take drugs, or drink alcohol .Blood tests. Blood tests are used to evaluate kidney and thyroid function,

check cholesterol levels and presence of anemia. B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) blood test. BNP is a substance

secreted from the heart in response to changes in blood pressure that occurs when heart failure develops or worsens. BNP blood levels increase when heart failure symptoms worsen, and decrease when the heart failure condition is stable.

Chest X-ray. A chest X-ray shows the size of your heart and whether there is fluid build-up around the heart and lungs.Echocardiogram. This test is an ultrasound which shows the heart’s movement, structure, and function. Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG). An EKG records the electrical impulses traveling through the heart.Cardiac catheterization. This invasive procedure helps determine whether coronary artery disease is a cause of congestive heart failure.

Stress Test. Noninvasive stress tests provide information about the likelihood of coronary artery disease.

Rise Above CHF - Small lifestyle changes that can make a big difference

and are worth making! Making lifestyle changes can be easier said than done. But working these changes into your daily routine can not only prevent CHF from worsening, but will make a positive difference in the quality of your life. Following recommendations about diet, exercise and other habits can help alleviate heart failure symptoms, slow your disease’s progression and improve your everyday life. In fact, people with mild to moderate heart failure often can lead nearly normal lives as a result. Important lifestyle changes may include: Quit smoking- Each puff of nicotine from tobacco smoke temporarily

increases heart rate and blood pressure, even as less oxygen-rich blood circulates through the body. Smoking also leads to clumping or stickiness in the blood vessels feeding the heart.

Nearly 6 MILLION Americans are living with CHF

Each Year 875,000 adults 65+ are hospitalized due to CHF

287,000 Americans die from CHF each yearApproximately 670,000 new CHF cases

are diagnosed each year!

YOUR HEALTHCongestive Heart Failure (CHF)Maintain a healthy weight- Excessive

weight leads to increased blood volume in the body. This means the heart must continually pump a larger volume of blood. In other words, the workload of the heart is increased, proportionally to the degree one is overweight.

Eat Healthy- choose a diet that emphasizes a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, skinless poultry and fish, nuts and legumes, and non-tropical vegetable oils. Also, limit saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, red meat, sweets and sugar-sweetened beverages.

Get Moving- Sitting is the new smoking! The CDC reports that sitting or being sedentary for 1 hour has the same negative health effects as smoking 2 cigarettes. Talk to your doctor about starting an exercise regimen. Schedule physical activity at the same time every day so it becomes a regular part of your lifestyle.

Track your daily fluid intake- If you have heart failure, it’s common for your body to retain fluid. Your healthcare team may recommend limiting your liquid intake. Many people are prescribed diuretics (water pills) to help them get rid of extra water and sodium to reduce their heart’s workload.

Avoid or limit alcohol- Alcohol consumption can lead to cardiomyopathy, hypertension and interfere with your medication. If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation. This means no more than one to two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women.

Avoid or limit caffeine- Caffeine is a stimulant and may cause increased or irregular heart rate in patients with CHF. Caffeine constricts blood vessels and forces the heart to contract with a stronger rapid force leading to a rapid, irregular heartbeat. Consume only a moderate amount of caffeine per day, no more than a cup or two of coffee

Get a yearly influenza (flu) vaccine and a one-time pneumococcal vaccine- Flu and pneumonia pose greater dangers for people who have heart failure (or any heart condition) than for healthy people. Pneumonia is a lung infection that keeps your body from using oxygen as efficiently as it should. Your heart has to work harder to pump oxygenated blood through the body.

Manage Stress- When you are under stress, your brain signals neurohormonal chemicals, like adrenaline or epinephrine into your body. Neurohormonal chemicals cause an increased heart rate and blood pressure, which increases the workload of the heart. Use techniques like yoga and meditation to reduce stress.

Wear appropriate clothing- Avoid tight socks or stockings, such as thigh-high or knee-high hose, that slow blood flow to the legs and cause clots. Avoid temperature extremes, which puts added stress on your heart. Dress in layers so that you can add or remove garments as needed.

Get adequate rest- To improve your sleep at night, use pillows to prop up your head. Avoid naps and big meals right before bedtime. Learn about sleep apnea and heart disease.

Take your medications as prescribed- Medications are used to improve your heart’s ability to pump blood, decrease stress on your heart, decrease the progression of heart failure, and prevent fluid retention.

Schedule regular doctor appointments- During follow-up visits, your doctors will make sure you are staying healthy and that your heart failure is not getting worse. Your doctor will ask to review your weight record and list of medications. If you have questions, write them down and bring them to your appointment. Call your doctor if you have urgent questions. Check with your heart doctor about any new medications prescribed by another doctor. Keep good records and bring them with you to each doctor visit.

BEWARE –

This Could Happen To You! Submitted by Barry Llewellyn

Both of my elderly parents had recently been released from the hospital - my father for hip replacement surgery, and my mother for what was thought to be a mini-stroke. The phone call arrived in mid-afternoon and the caller identified himself as their grandson and said that he had been in a car accident, in need of stitches. The phone was handed off to another man who identified himself as a policeman at the scene of the accident who told my parents that their grandson had been drinking and was going to be charged with a DUI. Before the conversation could go any further, the telephone call was fortuitously interrupted, due to either my panic-stricken parents’ extreme emotional reaction or just happenstance.

I received a barely coherent phone call from my mother imme-diately after that phone call from their “grandson” in Florida. Based on my mother’s hyperactive state, I was worried that she was going to have a heart attack. I managed to calm her down so that I could understand what she was saying, and asked her why her grandson was calling his grandparents, and not his parents. She said she wasn’t sure and assumed he couldn’t reach his parents because both were working. She pleaded with me to call her grandson, my nephew, and see what I could do to help.

Something wasn’t adding up in my mind and rather than calling my nephew, I called his mother, my sister. When I told her about the phone call that our parents had received, she said I was crazy, that she and her husband had just talked to their son earlier in the day. She called her husband and found out he had spoken to their son a few minutes earlier and he was fine. Regardless, they called him right away and confirmed he was okay and not involved in an accident.

Once we knew that he was alright, I called my parents to tell them that I believed they were the victims of a very cruel scam. Had they been able to stay on the line with the scammers, they would probably have been asked to send money to assist their grandson with medical and/or legal issues. Fortunately, it never came to that. Unfortunately, the scammers did succeed in raising my parents’ blood pressure to dangerously high levels.

Later I discussed this with my parents in more detail and we discovered that, in retrospect, there were telltale signs that something was amiss. I asked my mom if their grandson ever identified himself with his name. She said that he only identi-fied himself as her grandson. He didn’t say “Hi Nonni” like he normally does when he calls. When she asked him which grandson, he said her oldest. He didn’t mention his name, just proceeded to describe the urgency of his situation and that he needed their help.

I know that there have been articles written about these scams in the past, but I thought it was important to revisit this issue to make sure that seniors and others know that these scams continue, and that their guard should be up if they receive a similar call. By luck, my parents did not fall prey to any financial demands. Someone else might not be as lucky.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Grandparent Scam was written about in the May 2018 issue of Berks Encore News. This may be one of the most prevalent local scams still

being used to try to get unsuspecting family members to send money or debit or gift cards. Always reach out to your family members before taking any action.

“Happy New Year!” The revelers shout as the ball drops and the clock strikes 12. Most of us have put some thoughts into making (and trying to keep) our new year resolutions, but what time and effort have you placed in protecting your financial security in 2019. As we are now well into the end of January the financial fraud reports are already coming in at an alarming rate. Don’t worry about “What’s in your wallet?”…but “Who’s getting into your wallet?”

We must take preventative measures and educate ourselves in matters of financial security. If you ignore your money, it could be taken away. Everyone should know what to look out for and who you can trust to provide this information, we suggest that you contact the Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities for materials and programs for you and your commu-nity. So let’s make the following tips as our resolutions.

“I will…”• Obtain my free credit history from the three (Experion , Equifax and

Transunion) major credit bureaus. • Change all of my passwords and PIN information on all accounts.• Update anti-virus and security software on home computers and devices.• Review bank and credit card statements regularly.• Place alerts on accounts to be notified of transactions.• Protect all RFID cards and passports with protective sleeves, wallets

and purses.• Place a freeze on credit information to guard against unauthorized use.• Guard yourself against Identity Theft with educational programs and

materials.• Take the Annual Financial Checkup at www.dobs.pa.gov/Consumers

/Learn/Pages/Financial-Checkup.aspxMore information is available from PA Banking and

Securities and can be found online at dobs.pa.gov

This article has been written to provide basic information to warn the public about common fraud, scams and safety concerns by the Pennsylvania Crime Prevention Officers’ Association (PCPOA) a non-profit 501c(3) In cooperation with Crime Alert Berks County. BLANDON SENIOR CITIZENSLet’s look back to December 12th and the “Annual Christmas

Dinner” at the Fleetwood Grange. Mr. Chris Nygard and twenty of the music students at Fleet-

wood Middle School, joined the Blandon Senior Citizens, and provided us with several Christmas Tunes, which were very well played and enjoyed by all in attendance! Following the music, Pres. Pat called on Chaplain Ethel to lead us in a word of prayer. Ethel asked that we take a “Moment of Silence for Eleanor Solomon”, who passed away recently, at the age of 96. Eleanor and husband Solomon, also deceased, along with Emily & Wilson Cramer started the Blandon Senior Citizens November 1983. Following prayer everyone joined in with the Pledge to the American Flag, and the singing of “God Bless America”!

Our meal was: Fruit Cup, Salad, Potato Filling, Beef/Ham, Applesauce, Corn, String Beans, Gravy, Rolls and Butter, Vanilla Ice Cream with Strawberries. Very Good meal!!! Thanks to the Fleetwood Grange members for their good cooking!Martha Sitler, Berks Encore, was called on to install the Officers for 2019:

President – Pat RohrbachVice President – Jack HolubecSecretary – Shirley L. Readinger-ZieglerTreasurer – Anna Mae Kerschner

Sylvia Knouse, Entertainment Chairperson, introduced the program which was Richard N. Pawling playing the part of “Belsnickel”. What a very interesting program he presented!!! Anna Mae Kerschner mentioned that this year, everyone will receive a Box of “Russell Stover Assorted Fine Chocolate Candy from the Club.

President Pat and Treasurer Anna Mae wished everyone a “Merry Christmas” and a “Happy, Healthy 2019!”

All were reminded to stop and see our very own “Santa”, Paul Weller, who had gifts for everyone!

The next day, December 13, the group travelled to American Music Theater/The First Noel, with lunch at Good and Plenty.

To our surprise, it was not Ron behind the wheel of the Elite coach, but Santa himself. After our stop at Good & Plenty for lunch, we were back on the coach as we headed to see “The First Noel. What a very beautiful show it was. At this time, NO ONE has come forward to fill the position for “Trip Coordinator” for 2019 and if no one comes forward, this may be our last trip!

“Thank You, Shirley Frazer for all the many hours in prepar-ing, collecting payments, and leading the Blandon Seniors for the last four years, trips that we will never forget, and yes, it was all appreciated by those that traveled with us! “Again, thank you, Shirley!” Also, “Thank You to all of the Non-Member individuals for helping to make those trips possible!”

Officers for 2019 (l to r)Anna Mae Kerschner, Treasurer; Shirley Readinger-

Ziegler, Secretary; Jack Holubec, Vice President; Patricia Rohrbach, President.

SENIOR BERNERSOur first meeting of the New Year was held Monday Jan. 14 at

1p.m. at the Bern Lutheran Church on West Leesport Rd. All are welcome to join us the second Monday of each month at 1 PM.

Martha Sitler from Berks Encore began the meeting by installing our new officers: President-Donna Marks, Vice President-Marie Fies, Treasurer-Margaret Reagan, Secretary-Joan Thomas, and Membership-Margaret Gehring.

Martha then presented an informative program about the dangers of prolonged sitting. Who would have thought that being curled up in that favorite recliner for hours could be a danger to your health? It is recommended that you get up and move every hour to reduce your risk of problems.

This was our covered dish, and there were many food choices after the meeting. If you are looking for good food and fellowship, this is the place for you. Stay warm and dry and don’t forget to wash your hands.

Respectfully submitted,Marie Fies

PARISH-DANA RETIREESTHIS JUST IN! (Regarding inclement weather... read abundance

of snowflakes) – IF the Muhlenberg School District is closed on the Thursday our luncheon is scheduled, our luncheon meeting will be postponed until the following Thursday... IF the Muhlenberg School District closes on the following Thursday, that month’s meeting will be canceled. Listen to WEEU, 830 AM, or Channel 69 NEWS for updates on school closings.

Other than that, time marches forward. Are you going to join us on Thursday, 7 February? In lieu of a speaker, we will conduct our annual memorial service and acknowledge those brothers and sisters who have passed during the preceding year.

Of course, our rendezvous will be held at Wegman’s Restaurant, 4401 Pottsville Pike (Route 61) in Reading. Always easy parking and private entrance at the rear. Diligent Parish retirees begin to saunter into the warmth of friendship about 11 a.m. The hot buffet is available when the clock strikes twelve.

“What will be the fare?” you ask. You are in luck. It will be moist and tender roast of beef, flavorful smashed potahtoes –WITH GRAVY! Petite and perky peas, cocktail of fruit blend, fluffy rolls w/butter, ice cream a la Hershey. Does all that tantalize your taste-buds? Mmm-mmm!

All former members of the Dana Reading plant (management and union) are cordially welcomed.

Here’s hoping Ground Hog Day was special for you this year. Regardless of Phil’s shadow or not, there will be about seven more weeks of winter.

Fun By The NumbersLike puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

Here’s How It Works:Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
