Welcome to the 2015 Annual Conference of The Florida Foreign Language Association!
We are absolutely delighted you are here, as our focus of this year’s conference is to honor and celebrate our dedicated and talented language teachers . . . YOU!!! We hope that you will take full advantage of all of the wonderful opportunities that are built within our three-day conference!
It is with tremendous pride and enthusiasm that I welcome you to our 2015 FFLA Conference in beautiful and historic Saint Augustine! Our theme for this year’s conference is Power Up Your Brain With Language!, an appropriate title given that language learning develops and connects all parts of the brain. As the FFLA President of this prestigious event, I am deeply humbled by the challenges and learning that have brought this conference to fruition. During every given moment of this planning process, there were always FFLA colleagues available watching my back, supporting our endeavors, and providing tremendous insight and expertise. I have often stated to FFLA colleagues that our conferences mirror an incredible ‘Family Reunion” where all family members get along and cannot wait to spend time with each other! As a long-time member of the FFLA, this “family environment” has been the pivotal point in bringing me back ever since. If this is your fi rst time at an FFLA conference, you will soon fi nd how many new family members you will have gained by the conclusion of this wonderful family get-together!
As brain-based research reveals, a “relaxed and stress-free” mind lends toward optimal learning and engagement! Therefore, you are in an ideal environment to reach out to FFLA colleagues, make new friends and contacts, and take on new risks. The Irving Wershow Award
Each year the prestigious Irving Wershow Award for Excellence in Leadership in the profession is presented at the FFLA Conference in October to a member who has demonstrated leadership at the regional, state, and/or national level; served as a quality educator in his/her own right; and promoted the teaching and learning of foreign languages and/or bilingual/bicultural education, and/or English as a Second Language.
Dr. Irving Wershow was a distinguished professor of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Florida from 1938-77. He was a graduate of Yale University and taught all levels at UF. He was a potent advocate of language proficiency for communicative purposes, and strongly emphasized the role that culture plays in foreign language study. As such, he was way ahead of his time. He was an eloquent spokesman for our profession and was in constant demand as a consultant and advisor to national education associations. While at the University of Florida, he established and directed the first NDEA efforts. Dr. Irving Wershow also served as the Director of the Center for Latin American Studies, established and directed the Center for African Studies and was also the Director of the Graduate Programs in Linguistics at the University of Florida. Probably of most sig-nificance for school teachers in Florida, was his dedication to assisting foreign language teachers at the elementary and secondary schools in Florida. He was a university scholar who was also a classroom teacher advocate. He was actively engaged in supporting and promoting AATSP and FFLA. A considerable amount of the early efforts to establish the FFLA came from Dr. Wershow. He passed away in 1977.
The 2015 Irving Wershow RecipientAlysse Rasmussen
(16 June,1951 - 15 December, 2014)
Alysse Rasmussen was a valuable member of the FFLA Board of Directors representing the Florida American Sign Language Teachers Association - FASLTA from 2008 until the last board meeting in Miami in 2014. She was always an active and very wise contributor to discussions and had the well being of the organization at heart. Her profound knowledge of organizations and understand-ing of people, added great depth and richness to board interactions. Her resume is too long to include here, and FFLA is honored to have received her support and wisdom through the years.Alysse is greatly missed by the World Language Community in the State of Florida. This is the first time the Wershow award is bestowed posthumously, and it is with great respect that we honor a loved colleague.

REGISTRATION: Registration is required of all conference participants, presenters, and exhibitors. Namebadges must be presented to have access to the workshops, the breakout sessions, the general sessions,and the Exhibit Hall.
PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS: Thursday’s pre-conference workshops require additional registrationfees. Only attendees who have pre-registered and pre-paid for these events will be admitted. Ticketscan be found in your registration envelope and are required for admission.
EXHIBIT BREAKS, REFRESHMENTS, AND DOOR PRIZES: The Exhibit Area is located in the Ballroom B-C, down the hallway to the right of the registration area. Continental breakfast will be availablehere on Friday morning. Name badges must be presented to have access to the area. Dr. Nikolai P. Vitti2015 FFLA Friend of Foreign Languages Award Winner

We know the intellectual growth and vocabulary develop-ment that learning multiple languages offers students, which provides additional academic and economic opportunities, but just as important are the doors that learning multiple languages open to understanding multiple cultures, histories and ultimately better understanding oneself in a global and diverse society. - Dr. Nikolai P. Vitti
Dr. Nikolai P. Vitti is the Superintendent of Duval County Public Schools (DCPS), the nation’s 16th larg-est school district, serving over 127,000 students. Dr. Vitti received the prestigious Presidential Scholar-ship from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and was a member of the Urban Superinten-dent Program, which has developed a number of successful superintendents throughout the country. In 2012, he completed his doctorate from Harvard in Education, Administration, Planning and Social Policy. He received his masters in the same field from Harvard. Dr. Vitti also holds a Masters in Educa-tion from Wake Forest University where he was awarded a Master Teacher Fellowship and a B.A. in History. As an undergraduate, he earned Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa recognition. Dr. Vitti is married with four children who all attend public schools.
Dr. Vitti’s accomplishments in Duval County, based on his recognition of the value of world languag-es, has earned him the 2015 FFLA Friend of Foreign Languages Award. Under Dr. Vitti’s leadership, Duval County has reestablished world language programs in all middle schools and expanded its number of Dual Language programs. When the State of Florida implemented three different gradu-ation diplomas with only one requiring world language study, Dr. Vitti convinced the Duval County School Board to make two consecutive years of language study a graduation requirement for all DCPS students.
We applaud Dr. Vitti’s commitment to and support of world language study and hope that his vision-ary leadership will inspire other districts.

Dr. Cowgill is the 2015 recipient ofThe Friend of FFLA Award
Dr. Cowgill was a member and chair of the Spanish Achievement Test (Spanish SAT II) and presenter for Spanish AP workshops in the southern region; director of the National Association of Indepen-dent Schools and the Florida Council of Independent Schools; board member for the Educational Records Bureau; and a mem-ber of the National Merit Corp. advisory council. She currently serves on the board of Clinica Luz del Mundo, which offers free medical services to Broward County residents without insurance.Born in Cuba, Dr. Cowgill attended school in Havana before moving to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with her family in 1960. During her 38 years both as teacher and Head Mistress of the Pine Crest School, she set the stage for the school’s unwavering support of the world language program. She is currently the senior director of college counseling for International College Counselors, where she guides students through the college admission process.
Janna Peskett is a life-long learner and educator with nearly Janna Peskett is a life-long learner and educator with nearly 20 years of experience in teaching math, developing digital and print curriculum, and delivering professional development for K-12 schools as well as higher education. Most of her ef-forts have focused on working with teachers and students to develop a growth mindset about math abilities. Janna began her career in education teaching mathematics to Special Ed-ucation high school students, where she realized that anyone can improve in math and achieve at high levels, despite the expectations of themselves and others.
Janna translates the latest educational research on mindsets and motivation into growth mindset programs and practices. She manages and designs digital curriculum to change stu-dents’ and teachers’ mindsets. She also delivers professional learning talks and workshops for educators and leaders all over the country. Her latest work includes the Family and Com-munity Engagement Symposium, Florida Association of Math Supervisors, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Devel-opment (ASCD), and various school districts such as Washing-ton DC and Delaware’s Vision Network.

Getting Closer: A Cross-Cultural U.S.-Russian Project Focusing on Teaching Foreign Languages to U.S. Students and Blind/Visually Impaired Students in Russia.
This presentation reports on the project based on a US Department of State grant for the US-Russia Dialogue Program, which is based on a model catering to the oral and auditory abilities of Russian students and utilizing the ongoing learning by UCF students in the Russian/TEFL Program. The project takes participants outside the boundaries of their classrooms and involves them in a discovery process about themselves and about language and culture.

A Portuguese-English Dictionary for Production: Aligning Students’ Needs and Lexicographical InformationDictionaries are important tools for the foreign language learner. The purpose of this paper is to present a study on Portuguese-English learners’ dictionaries and to introduce an innovative bilingual dictionary of verbs based on the needs of Brazilian learn-ers of English. The literature review combines relevant studies in the fields of bilingual meta-lexicography, pedagogical meta-lexicography and contrastive linguistics. The more lexicographers know about the learners, the more effective role dictionaries will play in the learning context.

The Effects of Processing Instruction on ArabicProcessing instruction (PI) is a pedagogical intervention based on a model of input processing, whose goal is to alter the learner’s incorrect processing strategies and facilitate form-meaning connections (VanPatten, 2004). Various target forms across many languages have been investigated; however, research to date has not addressed the Arabic past tense. The cur-rent session presents the findings of the effects of PI paired with traditional output oriented tasks. The implications for theory and methodology are discussed.

Linguistic Policy & Foreign Language Learning In India: Towards a Pedagogy of PlurilingualismWhile the Indian education system allows for the national language (Hindi) to coexist along with regional languages, the current policy is nebulous about the position of foreign languages. Regionalism and marginalization of foreign languages make it safe to infer that the pedagogy of plurilingualism is not sufficiently highlighted in India. This paper discusses the challenges that a diverse democracy faces in the construction of a plurilingual educational pedagogy.

This fast paced presentation style uses images to convey meaning, eliminating ineffective text-heavy slides. This is a great tool that brings a much more profound visual oral presentation for all levels, including AP and AICE, and can be used for different instructional purposes. The presentation relies on the visual ‘chit-chat (Pecha Kucha)’ of the student, honed through practice and refinement.

The second portion of the session is about attending FSSC and will focus on how to select a team to compete, selecting a poem for each student, the right play for your group, and preparing the students for these competitions.
