Abstract

Supercapacitors (SCs) have attracted much attention in the past few years because of their

high power density (>10 kW kg-1

), long cycle life (>10 years), fast charging/discharging

(within seconds), high reliability, and low maintenance cost. Owing to such features, SCs

have been used in advanced applications, such as portable electronic devices, hybrid electric

vehicles, integration with fuel cell and battery, and emergency doors on the Airbus A380.

SCs can be classified broadly into electrical double layer capacitors and pseudocapacitors.

The former is characterized by a chargeable double layer, whereas the latter allows reversible

redox reactions to proceed. However, despite significant advances in electrode materials,

practical applications of SCs are hindered by (1) the relatively poor performance of the

electrode materials, such as low specific capacitance in carbon-based materials, (2) poor rate

capability in transition metal oxides, and (3) high cost of RuO2-based materials. Therefore,

research-based improvements in the electrochemical performance of electrode materials are

necessary to produce the next generation of high-powered and high energy-dense SCs.

In this talk, the speaker presents his recent work in the development and applications of 3D

nanostructured carbon/graphene materials for SCs. First, he proposes effective methods of

fabricating hierarchical porous carbon/graphene aerogel materials with surface functional

group modification. Second, he describes how the synergistic effect of nickel–aluminum

layered double hydroxide (NiAl-LDH)/graphene nanosheets (GNS) nanocomposite enhances

specific capacitance. Third, he illustrates how to achieve high energy density at high current

density as well as high rate capability of LDH/GNS electrodes for applications in SCs by

reducing the equivalent series resistance and the charge transfer resistance of the electrode.

Biography

Dr. Kwun Nam HUI is an associate professor at the Department of Materials Science and

Engineering of Pusan National University (PNU) in South Korea. He obtained his B.Sc.

degree in Physics from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2003 and

his M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of

Hong Kong in 2007 and 2009, respectively. He worked as a postdoctoral associate in 2009 at

the Institute of Advanced Materials, Devices, and Nanotechnology, Rutgers, The State

University of New Jersey. He contributed to the development of the ultrafast photonic crystal

waveguide modulator for communication. He joined PNU in the fall of 2009. Thus far, he has

conducted research in different areas related to energy and the environment, including Li-ion

battery, supercapacitor, and electrode materials for direct methanol/direct hydrogen peroxide

fuel cell, hydrogen production by methanol steam reforming, solid-state lighting, desiccant

cooling, removal of volatile organic compounds in air, and wastewater treatment. His major

contributions include the use of fluorescent nanospheres for proprietary white-light LEDs,

design and implementation of proprietary vertically stacked polychromatic LED structure for

color-tunable LEDs, first report of UV-stimulated emission from pivoted GaN-on Si

microcavities, first demonstration of UV lasing of GaN nanopillar structure at room

temperature, first demonstration of synergetic effects of MnO2/graphene composite to

improve catalytic ozonation of gaseous toluene, development of reusable catalyst chip for

wastewater treatment, green method for synthesizing graphene, metal (oxide)/graphene

composite for fuel cell applications, and production of hierarchical N-doped porous carbon

from biowastes as electrode materials for supercapacitors. As principal investigator, he has

managed 10 research projects with a total research grant of USD 0.5 million. His research has

led to one US patent, eleven Korea patents, four review papers, three book chapters, >85

peer-reviewed SCI journal papers, and >50 conference papers. He has served as lead guest

editor/guest editor/member of the editorial board of a number of journals, such as Frontier,

Reviews in Advanced Sciences and Engineering, Journal of Nanomaterials, Current

Nanoscience, The Scientific World Journal, and Scientific Journals International. He was in

the organizing committee of the 4th

Conference on New Energy and Sustainable

Development. He is a regular reviewer for many international journals and has been invited

to deliver lectures and hold seminars at various institutes and universities in Hong Kong,

China, and South Korea. His current research focuses on synthesis of hierarchical

carbon/graphene materials as well as on the development of 3D hierarchical layered double

hydroxide materials as advanced electrode materials for energy storage and conversion

applications.

ABSTRACT

In today’s business environment, corporations worldwide are under profound pressure of high

competition to improve their long-term and enduring performance. Business sustainability in

all dimensions of economic, governance, social, ethical and environmental (EGSEE)

performance is gaining acceptance by regulators, investors, and corporations as many global

stock exchanges (e.g., Toronto, Singapore) and regulators (EU parliaments) either encourage

or require their listed companies to issue sustainability reports. More than 5,000 companies

worldwide are disclosing financial economic sustainability and non-financial environmental,

social, and governance (ESG) sustainability performance. The Association to Advance

Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International is promoting sustainability research

and education and suggests that business schools renew their commitment to business

sustainability education in preparing business leaders for the 21st century. This paper

examines the importance, relevance, and delivery of all five EGSEE dimensions of

sustainability education. Business schools play an important part and ever lasting role in

preparing the next generation of business leaders who must understand the importance of

business sustainability in our society and new accountability and integrated sustainability

reporting and assurance.

Many global regulators and standard-setters and other organizations, including the

Sustainability Accounting Standard Board (SASB), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), and

International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC), are now promoting and suggesting

guidelines for Integrated/Sustainability Reporting and Assurance. Despite the importance of

business sustainability and sustainability disclosures to corporations and investors, there is

limited research on the status of business sustainability education (BSE). This study attempts

to fill the gap in literature by examining the coverage of BSE in the business curriculum and

presents pedagogical suggestions for the curriculum design and teaching of BSE. Business

sustainability education (BSE) courses can be structured in many ways including a

combination of lecture, presentation, discussion, analysis, reading assignments and case

method. The coverage of BSE topics in a separate course, or the integration of them into

business courses, requires the classification of related topics into teaching modules. The use

of the module approach to BSE enables instructors to customize their syllabus by promoting

critical thinking and the flexibility to cover all or selected modules in their courses. The

author’s teaching and research experience in business sustainability suggests that universities

either offering or planning to offer a stand-alone sustainability course or infusing

sustainability-related topics into the business curriculum consider a module approach in

designing their BSE coverage. Business sustainability education consists of all ten modules

that can be integrated into a variety of business and accounting courses. The full paper on

BSE along with suggested 10 modules in teaching sustainability is available upon request

from the author.
