Is your computer protected from these types of disturbances? Overvoltages, or power surges, occur when the incoming electrical power increases considerably above the normal 120 volts. Overvoltages can cause immediate and permanent damage to hardware. One type of overvoltage, called a spike, occurs when the increase in power lasts for less than one millisecond. Often resembling a power strip, a computer and other devices plug in the surge suppressor, which plugs in the power source. 1 1 Goldman rates the best surge suppressors. The personal computer surge suppressors rated range in price from $29 to $139 (52-55).

Is Your Computer Protected?

Electrical power variations can cause damage to computers and peripherals, often in the

form of loss of data or loss of equipment. If a computer is linked to a network, a single power

disturbance negatively can affect many computers and devices. Electrical disturbances include

overvoltages and undervoltages. Is your computer protected from these types of disturbances?

Overvoltages, or power surges, occur when the incoming electrical power increases

considerably above the normal 120 volts. Overvoltages can cause immediate and permanent

damage to hardware. One type of overvoltage, called a spike, occurs when the increase in power

lasts for less than one millisecond. Many sources cause spikes, ranging from uncontrollable

disturbances, such as lightning bolts, to controllable disturbances, such as turning on a printer

(Goldman 57-58). Surge suppressors help to guard a computer and peripherals from spikes

(Preventing Damage from Electrical Power Variations). Often resembling a power strip, a

computer and other devices plug in the surge suppressor, which plugs in the power source.1

1 Goldman rates the best surge suppressors. The personal computer surge suppressors

rated range in price from $29 to $139 (52-55).

An undervoltage occurs when the electrical supply drops. In North America, a wall plug

supplies electricity at approximately 120 volts. Any significant drop below 120 volts is an

undervoltage. Brownouts and blackouts are two types of undervoltages. These types of electrical

disturbances will not harm a computer or the equipment but can cause loss of data (Balitevich

and Green 45-62). To protect against loss of data from an undervoltage, computer users often

connect an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to their computer.2

Power disturbances can damage both hardware and software. Replacing either can be

costly. Thus, all computers should be protected from overvoltages and undervoltages. Protecting

your computer now before damage occurs can result in savings of time, money, and frustration.

2 Goldman lists several models of uninterruptible power supplies with features and costs.

In general, a basic UPS costs between $95 and $225 (72-75).
