Foreword
The Comprehensive Guide to Civil Society Organisations in Jordan is a joint effort between the Phenix Centre for Economic and Informatics Studies and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiung with an aempt to present an inclusive database for political and civil activists in public life in Jordan.
Aer the success of the Guide to Political Life in Jordan issued in 2008, we are now presenting the Comprehensive Guide to Civil Society Organisations in Jordan which includes a list of different Jordanian civil society organisations, in addition to foreign organisations working in the Kingdom.
During the course of developing this Guide, we faced some obstacles. These included the framework concept for the civil society to be included in this guide.
Intellectuals and experts who have tackled the civil society concept did not agree on a common definition for it. However, we are not going to discuss the different readings for civil society concepts, as we will only present the general framework for this society which in the past few decades has started to play an important role in the region's political and civil arena, especially in Jordan.
Thus, we decided to deal with the broader framework of the organisations that can be a component of civil society, including independent civil organisations that are based on voluntary work and serve humanity in general, or part of its interests.
A diverse civil society in any community seeks to strike a balance between different existing groups. Having a high level of freedom for establishing civil society organisations and being able to work freely, creates a peaceful environment that guides these communities' dialogue, cooperation and even conflicts as these interactions take place smoothly and peacefully. As a consequence, advanced societal balances emerge that protect communities from violent exchanges and confrontations which in return lead to closed unhealthy communities.
Having diverse and active civil society organisations is essential to the development of communities, including the political, economical and social development, especially in developing countries like Jordan.
-
Although a majority of intellectuals and experts in political sciences reveal that these organisations are not seeking to govern, they still need, in their field of work, a free and democratic environment without obstacles. Some of them struggle to create a free and democratic political environment and consider it one of their goals. Civil society can only achieve its goals in a free working environment.
Another problem we faced while developing this Guide is the availability of data for a considerable number of the organisations that are registered with the Ministry of Social Development and other concerned official institutions. As some of them do not have a phone number, others do not have premises, while others are not present due to being dissolved by the concerned official institutions or upon a decision by the organisation itself or due to being inactive; we have not succeeded in reaching those organisations.
Therefore, we worked very hard in the past 10 months to reach the largest possible number of these organisations. We have been able to collect the complete data, as stated in the criteria we set, for 670 organisations. These data include the full name of the organisation, the year of its establishment, its goals, members, branches, the names of the administrative team, its website, e-mail, telephone numbers and addresses.
Basic information was collected for an additional 875 organisations including their name, year of establishment, addresses, telephone numbers, and the available names of their chairpersons.
We also classified these organisations according to their goals and their scope of work. These classifications included employers unions and their societies, chambers of commerce and industry, trade unions and professional associations, organisations for persons with disabilities, environmental organisations, cultural and scientific organisations, youth and sport clubs, healthcare organisations, child and orphans care, and women's organisations, multipurpose charities in addition to organisations that work in the field of social development and protection, human rights and foreign organisations.
We also decided to include bodies working in the field of community development and civil rights. As they have a special scope of work, we classified them under the special commissions section. In addition, we decided to designate a special part of the Guide for study and research centres that work in areas related to social, civil and political development.
We arranged the organisations in different chapters according to their date of establishment, regardless of the degree of their importance, since it was difficult for us to define the importance of all listed organisations. Thus, we figured out that listing the organisations according to their date of establishment is a fair criterion.
We will not only issue a printed copy of this Guide, but we will launch the website www.civilsociety-jo.net that contains all data covered in the printed version. The web-based version will be distinguished in the sense that it will be updated on daily basis and with regard to the ongoing changes in the Jordanian civil society including newly established organisations, the dissolution of others, or any other changes related to their administration.
We hope that you will find useful information in this Comprehensive Guide to Civil Society Organisations in Jordan.
