ChangeWave Research: Corporate IT Spending Corporate IT Spending Uptick in IT Spending Growth – Business Tablets Have Momentum Paul Carton and Jean Crumrine Overview: For the second survey in a row, our ChangeWave Corporate IT Spending survey is pointing to an uptick in business purchasing going forward. Moreover, the 2nd Quarter outlook represents the second best reading of the past three years. A total of 1,602 respondents involved with IT spending in their organization participated in the February 8-21 ChangeWave survey, which also focused on business demand for tablets, PCs and smart phones. 90 Day Outlook: Going forward, 24% of respondents report their company’s IT spending will increase in 2nd Quarter 2011 – a 2-pt improvement over the previous survey in November. Only 18% say their company’s IT spending will decrease (or there will be no spending at all) – which represents a 4-pt improvement from previously. Putting these Findings in Context. As the following chart shows, this is the second consecutive quarter of improvement in IT spending. And while the net 6-pt uptick isn’t quite as big as the leap in November, it’s still the second best reading of the past 3 years. ChangeWave Research: Corporate IT Spending

Current Quarter Spending: We also asked respondents if their IT spending was on track thus far in the 1st Quarter, and the results are just about the same as our previous survey. A total of 13% say they’ve spent More than Planned so far in the quarter – down 2-pts from previously. Another 23% say they’ve spent Less than Planned – also down 2-pts.

IT Spending Categories: Of the 13 IT categories focused on in this survey, Servers (Change in Net Difference Score = +3) and Operating Systems (+3) registered the biggest quarterly increase, followed by Security (+2). (For more details, see pp. 13-14 below.)

Corporate PCs, Tablets and Smart Phones(A) Corporate PC Demand

After an uptick last quarter, business PC spending going forward remains relatively stable.  A total of 69% of respondents say their company will buy laptops in the 2nd Quarter – unchanged from the previous survey.  Planned desktop purchasing (66%) is down 1-pt.

What’s in store for the major PC manufacturers?

Laptops. Apple continues to show momentum in planned laptop buying (13%), registering a 1-pt uptick to a new all-time high in the business computer market. In contrast, Dell’s planned corporate laptop share (27%) is down 2-pts, and Hewlett-Packard’s (16%) is down 1-pt.

ChangeWave Research: Corporate IT Spending

As we pointed out last quarter, Apple’s MacBook Air lineup has been well received and helps explain why its planned corporate laptop share has been hitting new all-time highs.

Desktops. Planned purchases of Dell (30%), Apple (7%) and H-P (17%) desktops are unchanged compared to previously. Note that about 70% of H-P’s sales come from outside the U.S., while our ChangeWave surveys focus primarily on the U.S. market.

Netbooks. We asked corporate respondents planning to buy laptops next quarter to tell us their company’s Netbook purchasing plans. After four straight quarterly declines, business planned buying of Netbooks is stabilizing.

The consensus estimate for Netbooks represents just 9% of planned corporate laptop purchases for next quarter. But that’s up 3-pts, signaling that the Netbook segment is still managing to fill a corporate need – at least among some business users. (B) Corporate Tablet Demand

Even as PC spending remains little changed from last quarter, corporate demand for tablets is red hot.

A total of 9% of respondents say their company currently provides employees with Tablet devices – up 2-pts since our previous survey in November, and more than double the level of nine months ago.

Does your company currently provide employees with Tablet devices?

Note: The May 2010 and August 2010 survey question asked was “Has your company or organization purchased Apple iPad tablets for business purposes?”

The Apple iPad (82%) remains by far the most popular Tablet for business purposes, unchanged from November.

While H-P (e.g., Slate; 9%) and Dell (e.g., Streak; 5%) have been Apple’s only real competitors in the corporate tablet market to date, each has experienced a 2-pt decline as more tablet devices are beginning to become available.

Tablet Customer Satisfaction. In terms of business user satisfaction, the following chart shows how the iPad stacks up against H-P and Dell’s corporate tablets:

ChangeWave Research: Corporate IT Spending

In a bit of welcome news for both H-P (36% Very Satisfied) and Dell (30% Very Satisfied), their tablet satisfaction ratings have improved since November. But they’re still a far cry from the iPad’s, for which 70% of corporate users say their company is Very Satisfied and 27% Somewhat Satisfied.

Continued Explosive Demand for Corporate Tablets. Back in November we picked up a huge surge in corporate demand for Tablets, and our latest survey shows another 2-pt increase as 16% of respondents now say their company will purchase Tablets for their employees in the 2nd Quarter.

As the following comparison shows, the 16% who plan on buying tablets in the next 90 days dwarfs the percentage of companies that have already purchased tablets to date.

Moreover, despite a multitude of new tablets coming on the market the Apple iPad remains the overwhelming choice, with four-in-five (79%) corporate tablet buyers saying they plan on purchasing iPads next quarter – up 1-pt since November.

ChangeWave Research: Corporate IT Spending

Who is the manufacturer of the Tablets your company is planning on buying?

H-P (7%; down 1-pt), RIM (7%; down 2-pts) and Samsung (7%; up 3-pts) are now in a three-way tie for second in terms of corporate tablet buying plans. We note that Samsung has registered a 3-pt uptick since November.

The findings are a disappointment for Dell (5%), down 4-pts in terms of planned tablet buying.

Corporate Tablet Usage. We presented respondents with a list of business functions and asked them which ones their company is currently using Tablet devices for.

Internet Access (76%; up 3-pts), Working Away From the Office (71%; up 4-pts) and Checking Email (70%; up 1-pt) remain the three most popular business functions.

But Sales Support (42%) and Customer Presentations (41%) also remain highly popular uses, along with Laptop Replacement (33%; down 5-pts) – which although down slightly from November still remains at very high levels.

Bottom line, the ChangeWave survey findings continue to show that surging demand for corporate tablets poses a serious long term threat to the laptop industry.

(C) Smart Phones

Mobile Operating Systems. In terms of current mobile OS share, the Google (GOOG) Android OS (25%) is up 5-pts since November in the corporate smart phone market – a reflection of the Android’s momentum over the past 90 days.

* Note: In the Nov 2010 survey the Windows Phone 7 response choice was Windows Mobile.

This is the fifth consecutive survey that we’ve witnessed major advances for Android in the corporate market.

The Apple iPhone OS (35%; up 2-pts) has also seen an uptick in their current share of the corporate OS market – and is closing in on industry leader Research-In-Motion (RIMM), whose Blackberry RIM OS share (64%) remains unchanged from November.

We note that Microsoft’s current share of the corporate OS market (6%) is down 1-pt from previously. And while the corporate upgrade cycle can be slow-moving and there is still time for the Windows Phone 7 OS to catch on in the corporate market, these ChangeWave findings do not contain encouraging news for the new Microsoft mobile OS.

Planned Corporate Buying – Major Momentum for Apple in Smart Phone Market. Overall, 36% of respondents report their company plans to buy smart phones next quarter – the same as previously. But the big news is that Apple is the blockbuster winner going

forward. At the individual manufacturers’ level we’re witnessing another major surge in corporate demand for the Apple iPhone (45%; up 5-pts). Research-in-Motion. While RIM (56%; down 2-pts) still maintains the largest share of planned corporate buying going forward, the margin of their market share lead continues to narrow. RIM is now at their lowest share level in more than four years.

We note that the overall corporate smart phone market has increased dramatically over this time period, enabling RIM to increase unit sales even as its overall share of the corporate market has continued to drop.

HTC. The recent strong corporate demand for Android OS phones appears to be calming a bit going forward. After a year long surge to its highest level ever in terms of corporate demand, HTC (12%) is down a surprising 5-pts from last quarter – its first slowdown in the corporate market since May 2009.

Motorola. Motorola (MOT; 16%) now leads HTC in terms of planned corporate purchases – although it’s unchanged from the highs reached in our previous survey in November.

Samsung. Samsung (6%) also remains unchanged from its latest high in the corporate market, despite having recently released several new Windows Phone 7 models.

ChangeWave Research: Corporate IT Spending

Bottom Line: The ChangeWave survey findings point to another uptick in corporate IT spending growth. It’s the second quarter in a row we’ve seen improvement, and the second best reading of the past three years.

The momentum for tablets in the corporate marketplace continues to grow – and Apple remains the primary beneficiary. In addition, the findings provide evidence that the surge in corporate tablet demand could ultimately pose a serious threat to the business laptop market.

The Google Android OS has just had a strong quarter in the corporate market. But going forward the momentum among smart phone manufacturers is clearly shifting to Apple.

The Verizon iPhone is a key reason for this. As the following chart shows, 44% of companies buying iPhones next quarter say they’ll use Verizon as their wireless service provider, compared to 43% for AT&T – an exceptionally strong finding considering the Verizon iPhone became available only weeks ago.

For those companies buying Apple iPhones in 2nd Quarter 2011, which wireless service provider will your company use for your iPhones?

I. Summary of Key Findings

Introduction: For the second survey in a row, our ChangeWave Corporate IT Spending survey is pointing to an uptick in business purchasing going forward.

ChangeWave Research: Corporate IT Spending

Willingness to Spend: In an encouraging finding, when we asked respondents to rate the current willingness of their company to spend money on IT products and services, though only 38% said their company is giving a Green Light to IT spending (i.e., spending is normal), that’s up 6-pts from previously.

Another 57% said their company is giving a “Yellow/Red Light" to spending, but that’s also 6-pts better than the previous survey.

Thus, these findings represent a net 12-pt improvement over our previous survey results.

2nd Half 2011: Looking ahead at the entire 2nd half of 2011 (Jul-Dec), 23% now think their company’s IT budget will be greater than 1st half 2011 – 1-pt less than the previous survey.

But at the same time, only 17% believe their company’s IT budget will be less than 1st half 2011 – which is a 6-pt improvement from previously. We note that nearly half (47%) say their IT budgets will remain the same.

II. Corporate PCs, Tablets and Smart Phones

(A) Corporate PC Demand

After an uptick last quarter, business PC spending going forward remains relatively stable.  A total of 69% of respondents say their company will buy laptops in the 2nd Quarter – unchanged from the previous survey.  Planned desktop purchasing (66%) is down 1-pt.

What’s in store for the major PC manufacturers?

(FOR THOSE COMPANIES BUYING LAPTOPS IN 2nd QUARTER 2011) What percentage of the laptops your company is buying in the 2nd Quarter will be Netbooks? (NOTE: "Netbooks" are low-cost, highly portable laptops designed for basic computing - such as web browsing, email, word processing and other general purpose applications.)

The consensus estimate for Netbooks represents just 9% of planned corporate laptop purchases for next quarter. But that’s up 3-pts, signaling that the Netbook segment is still managing to fill a corporate need – at least among some business users.

Tablet Customer Satisfaction

In terms of business user satisfaction, the following chart shows how the iPad stacks up against H-P and Dell’s corporate tablets:

In a bit of welcome news for both H-P (36% Very Satisfied) and Dell (30% Very Satisfied), their tablet satisfaction ratings have improved since November. But they’re still a far cry from the iPad’s, for which 70% of corporate users say their company is Very Satisfied and 27% Somewhat Satisfied.

Continued Explosive Demand for Corporate Tablets. Back in November we picked up a huge surge in corporate demand for Tablets, and our latest survey shows another 2-pt increase as 16% of respondent now say their company will purchase Tablets for their employees in the 2nd Quarter.

Moreover, despite a multitude of new tablets coming on the market the Apple iPad remains the overwhelming choice, with four-in-five (79%) corporate tablet buyers saying they plan on purchasing iPads next quarter – up 1-pt since November.

Wireless Providers for Business Tablets

We asked respondents in companies planning to buy tablets which wireless service – if any – their company will use. We then compared the results with our findings from November – taken soon after Verizon began offering wireless service for the iPad.

While the findings still point to AT&T (37%) as the top choice for wireless service, its share among companies planning to buy Tablets next quarter is down 7-pts since November. Verizon (27%), on the other hand, is up 2-pts from previously.

And for those companies buying tablets in 2nd Quarter 2011, which wireless service provider - if any - will your company use for your tablets?

(C) Smart Phones

Mobile Operating Systems

In terms of current mobile OS share, the Google (GOOG) Android OS (25%) is up 5-pts since November in the corporate smart phone market – a reflection of the Android’s momentum over the past 90 days.

Which of the following mobile Operating Systems are used on the Smart Phones your company currently provides? (Check All That Apply)

* Note: In the previous Nov 2010 survey the Windows Phone 7 responses choice was Windows Mobile.

This is the fifth consecutive survey that we’ve witnessed major advances for Android in the corporate market.

The Apple iPhone OS (35%; up 2-pts) has also seen an uptick in their share of the corporate OS market – and is closing in on industry leader Research-In-Motion (RIMM), whose Blackberry RIM OS share (64%) remains unchanged from November.

But the big news is that Apple is the blockbuster winner going forward.

ChangeWave Research: Corporate IT Spending

The Verizon iPhone is a key reason for the shift in momentum to Apple going forward. As the following chart shows, 44% of companies buying iPhones next quarter say they’ll use Verizon as their wireless service provider, compared to 43% for AT&T – an astonishing finding considering the Verizon iPhone became available only weeks ago.
