Call to Worship................................................................................Pastor Elliot Smith(congregation standing)

Leader: The Spirit of God calls us from many places. Some of us come from busy homes with manypeople; some of us live alone.

People: We are a part of the family.Leader:This week has been different for each of us. Some of us have had happy news we want to

celebrate. Some of us have faced grief and need to cry.People: We are members of God’s family.Leader: Yet we all come to this same place. All of us are seeking God’s presence in our lives and all

of us are seeking God’s presence with each other.People: Together we become God’s family.

Scripture Lesson: ......................................................Millie MillsAnd I saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heavenfled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand beforeGod; and the books were opened... And the dead were judged out of those things which were writtenin the books, according to their works... And whosoever was not found written in the book of life wascast into the lake of fire....

Prayers of the People.........................................................................................Linda Farley

Vocal Solo: — Frederick M. Lehmaer......Sharon Williams, mezzo-sopranoThe love of God is greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell. It goes beyond the highest star, and reaches tothe lowest hell. The guilty pair, bowed down with care, God gave His Son to win. His erring child He reconciled, and pardoned from his sin. (Refrain)

When years of time shall pass away, and earthly thrones andkingdoms fall, when men, who here refuse to pray, on rocks and hills and mountains call, God’s love so sure, shall still endure, all measureless and strong. Redeeming grace to Adam’s race—the saints’ and angels’ song.(Refrain) Could we with ink the ocean fill, and were the skies of parchment made, were every stalk on earth aquill, and every man a scribe by trade, to write the love of God above, would drain the ocean dry. Nor could thescroll contain the whole, though stretched from sky to sky.

Worship Notes:Participants: Dr. Karl Haffner, our senior pastor, presents today’s sermon in his series,

with Elliot Smith, our pastor for young adults, internship, andoutreach ministries, tells the Children’s Story and hosts today’s worship. Millie Mills, lifetime Adventist, readsthe Scripture Lesson. Linda Farley, Millie’s daughter and chaplain at the Soin Medical Center, presents thePrayer of the People. Jerry Taylor, our minister of worship and music, is the organist for today’s service.

As we gather for worship we hear three contrasting works from English composers. John Dunstable (c. 1390-1453) is not England’s most influencial composer, yet much of Britian’s musical heritage is traced back to hisinfluence. His music was unpublished until 1953. (translates “Lovely”) is a hymntune by JohnEdwards heard in a setting by the British organist/composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. The

was composed by George F. Handel in 1749. The event was a disaster ending in a huge fire; themusic a huge success and has been played for centuries.

was written by Bonnie Powers Boyd, who now lives in Tacoma Park, MD, for aMother’s Day worship service in 1984. This was a particularly hard time of her life. Difficult choices were beingmade following a serious auto accident where her husband was left a mentally deficient invalid. Bonnie, realizing that she was now going to be both mother and father to a young child, wrote this hymn of praise inreaction to her situation.

(Grant Us Thy Peace) was chosen for today’s worship service that recognizes mothersand the Millennium. The original composer is uncertain. Many, including Mozart and others, attribute it toPalestrina. The arrangement for 4 violins was made by Jerry Taylor. Grant Wareham, Jonathan Beebe,Elizabeth Wareham and Karina Beebe are the violinists.

was written by Frederick M. Lehman, a pastor in the Church of the Nazarene. He wrotethis song in 1917 and it was published in , Volume 2, 1919. The lyrics are based onthe Jewish poem, , written in Aramaic in 1050 by Meir Ben Isaac Nehorai, a cantor in Worms,Germany; they have been translated into at least 18 languages. Sharon Williams, soloist, has taught atSpring Valley Academy for the past 15 years and will be joining the faculty at Spencerville Academy nearWashington DC next year.

is the most famous work of John Ylvisaker, who is a composer forthe Lutheran Church ECLA. The piece was originally composed to go with a video, but it didn’t fit. That musicbecame “Dancing With Jesus” and this tune and words were created. This hymn has been included in mostnew hymnals published since 1985.

was composed by the British organist of Westminster Abbey, Henry Purcell.

Next Sabbath, May 19, Pastor Elliot Smith will continue oursermon series, .

Challenged, Part 5

“The Millennium”

I. The Need for Justice

II. The Beginning of the 1,000 Years(Revelation 20:1-3 NIV) And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key

to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. {2} He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. {3} He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until thethousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time.

III. During the 1,000 Years(Revelation 20:4-6 NIV) “I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given

authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimonyfor Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his image and hadnot received his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christa thousand years. {5} (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years wereended.) This is the first resurrection. {6} Blessed and holy are those who have part in the firstresurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and ofChrist and will reign with him for a thousand years.”

IV. The Ending of the 1,000 Years(Revelation 20:7-10) “When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his

prison {8} and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth--Gog andMagog--to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. {9} Theymarched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God's people, the city heloves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them. {10} And the devil, who deceivedthem, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had beenthrown.”

V. The Earth Made New(Revelation 21:1-4 NIV) Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven

and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. {2} I saw the Holy City, thenew Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed forher husband. {3} And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God iswith men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with themand be their God. {4} He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death ormourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."

We are pleased to introduce the newest member ofthe Kettering SDA Church pastoral staff! KasperHaughton Jr. will be the Youth and Children’sMinister. He graduated from the Andrew UniversitySeminary (MDIV) last week and will be joining thestaff here at Kettering in July. While in Seminary,Kasper was involved with the Center for YouthEvangelism, the NAD Worship & Music Conference, and as team member of the "One Place, Church ofRefuge" ministry for youth and young adults atAndrews. Here is a statement from Kasper aboutwhat led him into ministry:

"I grew up in a multicultural Seventh-dayAdventist Christian family, watching bothmy dad and grandfather pastor their owncongregations. However, it wasn’t untilcollege that I found my own personalpassion for Jesus. I went to SouthernAdventist University with the determinedgoal of becoming a medical doctor. But withthe equivalent of three years of pre- med studies out of the way, God haddifferent plans. I felt a strong call from Godto pastoral ministry after spending a yearaway in student missionary work. Sincethat point, it has been amazing to watchGod confirming His call on my life."

He will visit, for a weekend, several times over thenext two months - but will not begin employmenthere until July. In the meantime, we encourage youto send him a phone call, or a text message(574.344.7818) - introducing him to the kindnessand warmth of this congregation.

Welcome Kasper Haughton
