Emerging technologies will change everything –how we work, how we live, & how we communicate

Emerging technologies are new progressive developments of technical innovations that are understood as capable of changing what exists today within a field, for a company’s competitive advantage.

Many of these can be described as disruptors of what exists today which makes for bigger changes than we have had in the past

Emerging technologies are characterized by radical novelty, relatively fast growth, prominent impact, potential for a competitive advantage for a company that makes the product, and uncertainty and ambiguity because their importance is determined in the future.

They include a variety of technologies such as educational technology, information technology, nanotechnology, biotechnology, cognitive science, psycho technology, robotics, and artificial intelligence.

With the long term hope that they will offer opportunities for the betterment of the human condition.

NEW EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES AND HOW THEY AFFECT US AS HUMANS

The large majority of people in the world live a life dependent on technology.

The World Health Organization estimates that more than a billion (1,000,000,000) people right now are already dependent on assistive technologies like hearing aids, prosthetic limbs, body implants, and wheelchairs.

It is estimated that a third of the world’s population will be wearing glasses or contact lenses by the end of this decade.

Billions of people rely on drugs to maintain their quality of life (or even to stay alive). Especially in richer countries—between more than half of US adults are using prescribed drugs of some kind.

Our clothes are plastic, our food is selectively-bred (or genetically-altered) for higher yields, and our mental labor is outsourced to computers.

Ever since we mastered fire and discovered that it made food both tastier and more nutritious, humans have been taking and shaping the world around them.

The world around us— including our own inventions—has then shaped us, in turn.

Humans and machines are not actually opposites of each other; the binary of “natural” and “unnatural” is a description that can mask what’s really happening in the world.

Our technology is an extension of our humanity. We are all human machines.

It’s common to think about the world in terms of what’s natural, and what we’ve created:

Plants versus buildings

Pharmaceuticals versus home remedies

Organic food versus processed

Digital communication versus face-to-face

The point is that we shouldn’t use terms like “technology” and “nature” as if they’re opposites—because they’re not.

The last decade has seen the explosion of smartphones and constant communication, everywhere, anytime.

What does that mean for how we think? Why is it that we feel that gut fear of the new?

So often the temptation is to worry—tabloids are adept at exploiting the fears of parents that too

much screen time is damaging the brains of their children.

But to focus our worry on how smartphones might be “rewiring kids’ brains” is missing a bigger point.

We should think less about changing brains and more about whether we can trust the devices that are doing the changing. After all, they’re designed and built by people trying to make money from us.

“…The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority, they show disrespect for adults and love to talk rather than work or exercise. They no longer rise when adults enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter in front of company, gobble down their food at the table and intimidate their teachers…”

WHO SAID THIS AND WHEN ?

Socrates - 5th Century B.C.

2,500 years ago !!

Socrates worried about what new technology was doing to young peoples’ brains.

As younger scholars moved from oral arguments to written ones, Socrates argued against writing, which he felt would “create forgetfulness in the learners’ souls, because they will not use their memories.”

Thousands of years later, little has changed: in the 20th century, moral panic erupted over television, which detractors worried would turn us all into zombified couch potatoes, incapable of creative thought.

Decades later, video games were even worse, turning our children into amoral, trigger-happy monsters.

THERE ARE SOME KEY IMPORTANT RECURRING QUESTIONS IN EVERYTHING WE EXPERIENCE WITH

NEW TECHNOLOGIES

What is the point of a future that’s not accessible to everyone?

If we feel the technology we rely on is changing us, can we trust that change?

After all, the revolution of today is the mundane of tomorrow. Our successors will find the moral panics around smartphones as quaint as we now think of 20th century moral panics over television.

That isn’t to deny that technology changes us—just that

humanity can be endlessly adaptable, and we can find ourselves within a new normal with quick changes.

We will always be living part-biological, part-technological lives, because that’s what humans do.

We invent, we adapt, we manipulate and adjust—and we try and understand those processes, to welcome or to fear them.

• In the race to the future, organizations that back the right emerging technologies may survive and prosper – those that don’t, wont

• Organizations face more uncertainty now than at any point in living memory

- Which emerging technologies to back?

- How to deliver the value and reduce the risks of the emerging technologies they back?

THE NO-COLLAR WORKFORCE

As automation, cognitive technologies, and artificial intelligence gain traction, companies may need to reinvent worker roles, assigning some to humans, others to machines, and still others to a hybrid model in which technology augments human performance.

Managing both humans and machines will present new challenges to the overall company management and the human resources organization, including how to simultaneously retrain augmented workers and to pioneer new HR processes for managing virtual workers, cognitive agents, bots, and the other AI-driven capabilities comprising the “no-collar” workforce.

By redesigning legacy practices, systems, and talent models around the tenets of autonomics, HR groups can begin transforming themselves into nimble, fast-moving, dynamic organizations better positioned to support the talent—both mechanized and human—of tomorrow.

Technology is moving at an increasingly fast pace, with every facet of our lives now linked intrinsically to microchips in one way or another.

While this might all be in the name of progress, it is also having a negative effect on many traditional careers, which are becoming more and more automated.

As a result, if a person is looking for a job, it is important to avoid choosing an industry that is made up of disappearing jobs.

There are already warning signs: A recent study by the Foundation for Young Australians (FYA) found that nearly 60 per cent of young people in the country are currently training for careers that will be two-thirds automated in the next 10 to 15 years, which is a huge waste of skills.

Indeed, according to aviation consultant Douglas M. Moss, Asian flight carriers forbid their pilots from landing the plane, insisting the process must be automated.
