    7. Do not block any ventilation openings. Install inaccordance with the manufacturers instructions Toensure reliable operation of the product and to protect itfrom overheating, put the product in a position and locationthat will not interfere with its proper ventilation.     P roper pos itioning of the s pea kers will allow you to experience the a udio surround e ffec ts

    that your Companion 5 multimed ia spe aker sys tem is de signed to d eliver.

    P lac e the left and right spea ker to the left and right of your computer monitor at a bout anarms length a wa y from w here you a re s eated (Fig ure 2). The be ad on ea ch s pea ker co rd isma rked L (left) or R (right) to ide ntify left/rig ht p lac ement .

    For optimum performanc e, position eac h spea ker the same distance from you, and nomore than 24 inches (61 cm) apart.

    Aim both speakers straight ahea d. Do not angle them inwa rd or outwa rd.

    Keep the spea kers a wa y from a djac ent large objects or cab inet surfaces . For example, ifyour computer desk includes a hutch, keep the outside edge of each speaker at least sixinches away from any adjacent surface. Avoid placing the speakers inside cubby holes.

    The Acous tima ss mod ule is des igned to be the unseen part of the s peaker system.For examp le, you c an plac e it under your co mputer ta ble or des k.

    Put one rubber foot on each corner of the

    bottom panel of the module.

    Stand the module on its feet on a f la t surface.

    DO NOT BLOCKthe front g rille o f the mod ule.

    DO NOTlay the mod ule on its side o r stand itupside do wn.

    it or be side it that ma y b loc k the ventila tion

    openings a t the rea r of the mod ule. Adeq uate

    from overheating.

    computer system.

    Keep the module aw ay from heat sources such as radiators, bas eboards, or quartz

    heaters. Make sure the power cord c an reach a n AC (mains) outlet and the USB ca ble ca n reac h

    the US B c onnec tion on your computer.

    CAUTION: Do not place computer monitors, floppy disks, hard d rives, or other magnetic mediawithin 6 inches (15 cm) of the Acoustimass module. The magnetic field p roduced by this modulecan erase magnetic media and interfere with the mon itor.

    The follow ing steps a nd Figure 3tell you how to make the system connections.

    Before you start:

    Please read the entire setup procedure.

    Make sure your computer is o n and the operating s ystem is running.

    IMPORTANT:Close all other software applications.

    1. Inse rt the red plug o n the right (R) sp ea ker ca ble into the Rjac k and insert the w hite plugon the left (L) sp ea ker ca ble into the Lja ck. The R a nd L ma rks o n the plugs must fa ce up

    for each plug to fit correctly into its respective jack.

    2. P lug the co ntrol pod c a ble into the Control Podjack.

    3. P lug one e nd of the pow er cord into the AC Input jack on the rear panel of the Acousti-

    mass module. Plug the other end into an AC (mains) outlet.

    4. P lug the a ppropriate end o f the US B ca ble (supplied) into the To Computerjac k on theAco ustima ss mod ule. P lug the other end into a U S B ja ck on your co mputer.

    IMPORTANT: For optimum performance, connect the USB cable directly to aUSB jack on your computer rather than connecting through a USB hub.

    5. For WindowsXP computers,go to Windows XP audio setup on pag e 11.

    For WindowsVista computers,go to Windows Vista audio setup o n pag e 13.

    For Mac OSX computers,go to Mac OS X audio setup on pa ge 15.

    Your Companion5 multimedia speaker system is now ready to use.

    Note : If you remove the USB connect ion to your Companion 5 system and plug it in again later,perform this procedure again to check the settings.

    System m odes

    There a re three s ystem m od es. Eac h sys tem mod e is identified b y the co lor of the mode indi-cator on the control pod (Figure 13):

    Muted (Amber):The s ystem spe akers a re s ilence d. You hea r no a udio from the co mputeror any c onnected source. This mode is automatically se lected when you c onnect hea d-phones to the control pod.

    Active (Green):You hea r the a ctive sound so urce from the sys tem s pea kers. The pos itionof the volume control ring sets the volume level.

    Standby (Red):The sys tem is in an e nergy-sa ving mo de. When bo th the USB co nnectionfrom your com puter a nd the input signa l of a co nnected aud io s ource a re inactive for sev-eral minutes, the sys tem mutes the s pea kers a nd sw itches to S tand by. The sys tem returnsto the Muted mode w hen the US B c onnection bec omes a ctive ag ain.

    Touch the to p ce nter of the c ontrol pod to s witch be twe en the Muted a nd Active mode,except when hea dphones a re co nnected. P lugging in head phones a lwa ys puts the system inMuted Mode until they are removed.

    IMPORTANT!

    The Companion5 multimedia speaker system is designed to perform at its bestwithout any additional audio effects. Make sure you disable any audio effectssettings and close any effects applications running on your computer.

    Make sure the settings in your software application are correct for 5.1 surroundsound.

    Cont ro l l i ng the vo lum e

    The vo lume c ontrol ring on the control pod (Figure 13) is the master volume control for anya udio coming from yo ur co mputer or a device c onnec ted to the input jac k. Rotate the ringclockwise to increa se the volume or co unterclockwise to d ec rea se it.

    To se t th e vo lume leve l

    To prope rly s et the volume level, yo u need to a djust both the volume level of the s ource (yourP C or a c onnected s ource) and the Co mpanion 5 system:

    1. S et the Co mpa nion 5 sys tem volume to m inimum.

    2. S et the source volume nea r ma ximum.

    3. S tart playing music.

    4. S low ly increas e the volume on the C ompa nion 5 sys tem c ontrol pod until the so und

    reaches a comfortable level.

    Note : The system outp ut may be reduced by an internal protection feature if you play music at

    To connect headphones, plug the hea dphones co rd into the 3.5-mm stereo head phonesjac k on the side o f the control pod (Figure 15).

    Plugging in headphones a utomatica lly mutes the system spea kers.

    After disco nnecting head phones, touch the mode sw itch to hear so und from the spea kersagain.

    To a djust the vo lume level, use the vo lume co ntrol ring o n the co ntrol pod .

    To connect an audio devicesuc h as a C D/MP3 player, plug the a udio ca ble from thedevice into the 3.5-mm stereo input jack on the control pod.

    To a djust the volume level, turn up the vo lume on the a udio device a nd us e the vo lumecontrol ring on the control pod.

    Note : When listening to a connected audio device, alerts and sounds from your computer are

    mixed with the sound from the audio device. You may need to ad just the volume contro l ring and

    the volume levels in your computer and the connected device to hear both sources at your

    preferred levels.

    Clean ing your speaker system

    To c lean the s urfac e of your spea kers, Acoustimass module, a nd co ntrol pod, use a softcloth. You ma y use a n a mmonia-free w indow cleaner to ma intain the finish.

    Do not use a ny sprays nea r the speakers. Do not use any solvents, chemica ls, or cleaningsolutions c onta ining a lco hol, a mmonia, or ab rasives.

    Do not allow liq uids to spill into any openings.

    To c lea n the spe aker grilles, vac uum them ca refully.

    Disconnect the USB ca ble from your computer and plug it in aga in.

    Make sure co nnections a re sec ure (See Making system c onnections on pa ge 10).

    Check your speaker cords for damage that may b e ca using an open or short circuit .

    Turn the volume ring on the control pod c lockwise.

    If you are using a connected audio device, ma ke sure it is plugged in and the volume

    To de termine if the problem is in the so und source o r the Acoustimass module, co nnect a

    different sound s ource to the co ntrol pod. If the Com pa nion 5 spea ker sys tem ope ra tes

    properly, the problem is in the original sound source. If the problem remains, then theprob lem is in the Aco ustimass mod ule.
