Currently a business case is being developed, and options considered for future use of the existing dam include decommissioning or partial decommissioning. Meanwhile, WaterNSW has now engaged our major project partner to work with us on the planning, development and delivery of three major dam projects including Dungowan Dam, Wyangala Dam near Cowra and a business case for a new dam on the Mole River near Tenterfield. Maximising local opportunities from the project WaterNSW is strongly committed to maximising local opportunities over the construction period for the new Dungowan Dam and Pipeline project. We will be connecting local businesses with our project partners and major contractors. This month we have held briefings with Tamworth Business Chamber members and launched our business registration portal. The portal will enable us to provide your details to our project partners and major contractors to assist them in engaging with local business so that we look at every opportunity to maximise local benefits from the project. If you’re interested in providing products and services to the project, please register online at www.waternsw.com.au/dungowanbusiness. We’ll continue to work closely with the Tamworth Business Chamber to ensure any opportunities that come through the construction period be sourced where possible from the local region. The Tamworth Business Chamber supports the initiative from WaterNSW to introduce a business portal for the Dungowan Dam upgrade and pipeline. This is an opportunity for local businesses and operators to get involved in the construction of this local project, not just on the shovels but in many different aspects of the construction. We recommend local businesses register their details in the portal to ensure that it is local businesses that get to benefit from this huge construction program. New dam will improve water availability and security for Peel Valley

Replacing the current Dungowan Dam with a new, larger dam will improve water availability and security for the city of Tamworth and Peel Valley.

The new 22.5 GL dam on Dungowan Creek will be built approximately 3.5 km downstream from the current Dungowan Dam, which is owned by Tamworth Regional Council. A new 55km delivery pipeline will be built to transport water from the new Dungowan Dam to the Calala Water Treatment Plant.

WaterNSW has been tasked to lead the planning and project management for the Dungowan Dam project, to be jointly funded by the Federal and NSW State Government.

Maximising local opportunities from the project

WaterNSW is strongly committed to maximising local opportunities over the construction period for the new Dungowan Dam and Pipeline project.

“The Tamworth Business Chamber supports the initiative from WaterNSW to introduce a business portal for the Dungowan Dam upgrade and pipeline. Dry conditions remainThe new Dungowan Dam is being built in the wake of one of the most severe droughts in recorded history.

2020 has seen some improvement in conditions, but the majority of NSW remains drought affected, underscoring the urgency of the need to achieve water security including for the Peel Valley region and the city of Tamworth.

Over the past month a focus has been on speaking with landholders who may be potentially impacted by the works and starting our detailed environmental and geotechnical investigations. WaterNSW would like to thank the many dozens of landholders who are already assisting to make this project possible.

“I really encourage local businesses to register and stay up to date via our website and project updates through local media.
