We should be amazed! Every Sunday, we hear Jesus Christ speak to us in the Bible readings. Every Sunday. Every Liturgy. Today, we are amazed at his clarity, at his authority. Even the unclean spirit know him to be Holy and God.

† How do I see Jesus’ holiness active in the world? † What do I need to hear from him? † What will that lead me to do?

Come, let us sing joyfully to the Lord; let us acclaim the rock of our salva on. Let us come into his presence with

thanksgiving; let us joyfully sing psalms to him. [Psalm 95:1‐2] For some unknown reason the responsorial

psalm this week triggered something in my mind from

the past. Perhaps this trip to the past was prompted also

by a recent ar cle by Colleen Dulle in America magazine.

However, before I make my comments about her ar cle

allow me to take a voyage back to the dark ages when I

was a seminarian. Way back then many of the more

mature priests of my religious congrega on who were

involved in parochial work, as well as teachers in our

schools, looked through squinted eyes at the men who

were preparing to be future priests. Probably I view the

millennials who are preparing for the priesthood in the

same way these older priests looked upon my age group

in years long gone. It was in 1965 that a Catholic singer

who was also a songwriter introduced folk music into the

Catholic music repertoire. Un l that me Gregorian

Chant was the mainstay for centuries with the addi on of

music wri en by such great composers as Giovanni

Pierluigi da Palestrina, Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgang

Amadeus Mozart, and Franz Schubert to name a few

more recognizable composers, but believe me there is a

large number of other composers from many na ons

whose names only a church organist or choir director of

yesteryear would recognize. That composer and singer

that I referred to earlier was Ray Repp who introduced

an album en tled Mass for Young Americans. Among his

songs was one en tled: Sons of God. Parts of this song

remain in my mind to this day: Sons of God Hear His holy word/ Gather round the table of the Lord/ Eat His body

drink His Blood /as we sing our song of love Allelu, Allelu, and Alleluia. I recall joking at that me with some of my

fellow seminarians sta ng that if Ray Repp’s music is

good enough for us, it should be good enough for future

genera ons of Catholics. I venture to say that some who

read this ar cle have no idea of who Ray Repp is or recall

any of his music. As I stated above this theme came to

my mind because of an ar cle wri en by Colleen Dulle.

She tled her ar cle, “A Chris an Funeral Classic.” A song

composed by Fr. Jan Michael Joncas some 38 years ago

and is s ll very much in use today. The occasion which

prompted him to write this song was the death of the

father of friend of Joncas. Saddened by this death he

began to sketch out some chords of what has become a

now famous hymn: On Eagle’s Wings. It debuted at his

friend’s father’s wake. Several years later a publisher

asked Fr. Joncas to be part of an album. The song gained

in popularity so much so that in 1995 that Cathy Kea ng,

the wife, of the governor of Oklahoma asked that this

song be sung at a memorial for all those killed in the

bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Two

years later Michael Crawford, who had a lead role in

“Phantom of the Opera” sang “On Eagle’s Wings” on

na onal television. It was even sung at the funeral of the

famous Italian tenor, Luciano Pavaro : “Sulle Braccia

dell’Aquila.” My point is that some mes when we make a

small gesture of kindness can grow into something much

larger than we expect it to be. Maybe this week you will

offer consoling words to someone that will totally

influence that person’s life in a real posi ve manner. Just

think of what a posi ve influence a simple song has had

in the Catholic Church for these last 38 years. Have a

great week.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

This is the year of St. Paul, and so one of the most visited churches of Rome is also one of the most beautiful: the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. Like so many other churches, it was founded by the master-builder (or financier) Emperor Constantine about the year 315. Paul was martyred outside the walls of the City of Rome at a place called Tre Fontaine, probably on June 29, in the year 65, perhaps the first anniversary of St. Peter’s crucifixion. Christians buried him in a quiet place about two miles away, and visited to pray. Constantine was running low on bricks, apparently, because the first church was tiny. In 386 it was demolished and today’s basilica begun. This vast and towering space looks much the same today as it did in the fourth century.

The centuries have not been kind to ancient Rome, but until the early 1800s St. Paul Outside the Walls survived beautifully, perhaps because it has been assigned for nearly a thousand years to Benedictine monks. It was therefore a vibrant place of daily prayer even through the centuries when Rome was a poor and nearly abandoned city. In 1823 a great fire resulted from a botched repair job to lead on the roof, and St. Paul’s was destroyed. It is said that the whole world contributed to its restoration. Even the Russian czar and the viceroy of Egypt gave alabaster, malachite, and lapis lazuli for the pillars and the tabernacle. Several of the precious mosaics were able to be restored, bringing the ancient basilica back to life. One of the great treasures of the basilica is a set of prison chains, said to have been worn by the Apostle in the last days before his martyrdom. Unlike other Roman churches, St. Paul’s stands in a garden-like suburban neighborhood, surrounded by stately palm trees, gardens, and parks.

This month St. Scholastica will conduct its Baby Bottles for Life campaign to benefit, support and educate pregnant women facing crisis or unintended pregnancies.

The funds collected through the Bottles for Life campaign support the programs and services of the Waterleaf Medical Clinic and Education and Resource Center located in Aurora.

Waterleaf provides practical help; pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, STD testing and treatment as well as continuing education and support for women in our community who would otherwise be at risk for choosing abortion.

Last year with the support of churches like St. Scholastica, Waterleaf served 805, performed 533 pregnancy tests, 401 ultrasounds, and rescued 77 babies.

Baby bottles have been distributed to parishioners to take home and fill. Bottles should be returned to the parish by the weekend February 17th and 18th. Please fill the Baby Bottle with your heartfelt financial donation. Please make checks payable to Waterleaf. Your support is greatly appreciated.

For further information, please contact Marlene at 224.531.2622 or Judy at 630.416.9760. Tickets will be available at Hospitality in the gym on Sunday, February 4.

Join Us For A Three Day RETREAT! S.T.O.R.M. Youth Ministry is hosting a Retreat at Five Pines Retreat Center in Berrien Center, Michigan from Friday, February 16th at 5:00 p.m. until Sunday, February 18, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. Retreats are just a real fun way to get away from school, home, and all the other stresses in your life. For one weekend, you leave all your worries behind and learn about God and all of his love. Your relationship with God grows and you learn a better understanding about what being a Christian is all about. It gives you a perspective on what is really important in life. When you come back, you feel relieved and like you can conquer anything that is thrown your way. The theme of this retreat is “Tell Me a Story: Parables” and our teen leaders will be sharing how they have experienced the parables in their lives. There will be great discussions and, of course, great fun. The Retreat Center has a tubing hill and Cross Country Skiing if there is snow and offers a beautiful backdrop for our weekend. Permission slips and information sheets are available on the rack in the back of church and in the Parish Office. The permission slips are bright pink and are due by Sunday, January 21, 2018. They can be turned in at the S.T.O.R.M. Meeting, or dropped off at the Parish Office. For more information please call Jennifer in the Youth Ministry Office at 630-985-2351x138.
