Bread and Wine; Flesh and Blood.

For a while — too long, it seems — most of us could not share in Holy Communion. Perhaps it is still so. We long to eat and drink because Jesus pledges that he will remain in those who do. But we believe that same Christ is present to us in other ways. When Scripture is red aloud, he speaks in our midst today. When two or three gather in his name, he is there, too. He is not distant from us.

We, the family of St. Scholastica Catholic Parish, are dedicated Christian stewards of God’s gifts. We have been called in Baptism and through the Holy Spirit to be disciples of Jesus. We are a sacramental community,

Gradual Re-Opening of St. Scholastica Parish Office

The Parish is working on developing a phased re-opening of the Parish Office. We have truly appreciated your patience.

Starting June 15th

We will slowly begin to have modified office hours Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 9 am to 1 pm, by appointment only. In keeping with the current guidelines provided by the diocese, we ask that any questions or request that can be handled by phone or email continue to be handled in that manner. Thank you for continuing to use the white drop box at entrance to the parish center.

All visitors must wear a mask or face covering over their nose and mouth, and maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from others.

There will be markers on the floor identifying a six foot distance.

Visitors will check in with Rita or Lisa, who will let the staff member or priest know that their guest has arrived.

As a gentle reminder please do not come to your appointment if you are not feeling well.

On behalf of the staff and parishioners of St. Scholastica Parish, welcome! Although we are a large, diverse faith community, we strive to always cherish

and value the gifts of each parishioner. We invite you to find a place in our parish that nurtures and serves

you in your faith development.

Most of us move along a daily rou ne without giving

much thought to every li le detail: we know what we

should do today and we normally try follow that script

and accomplish it, but some mes we are excited because

we have something special on the horizon and we are

thrilled to be a part of that event. Almost all of us

followed this or a similar pa ern of living un l Mid-

March of 2020. As I’ve said and wrote many mes that

that li le, powerful Covid 19 changed the world. None

of us wants that virus to dictate our personal lives, but it

has. However, I did wonder if I happen to meet that li le

virus up close, what would the outcome be like? More

than likely I would end up at Sw.Wojciechowa i.e., St.

Adalbert’s Cemetery in Niles with my deceased fellow

CR’s. Not to joke too much, but I wonder how would I be

remembered a erwards. Among family and a few close

friends I would remain in their memories [for a while]

because there might be some old photos, other

mementos, or shared experiences, or some ny space in

the memory of someone’s phone, that is un l they got a

new phone. This brings me to Act 3, scene II of

Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. Within this part of the play

there is a famous line: “The evil that men do lives a er them; the good is o interred with their bones.” Now

not to become too morbid, if we think about it each one

of us would rather want to be remembered by the good

we’ve done during our life me rather than by our faults

and errors. And, with the Lord’s grace, each one of us

has done a tremendous amount of good whether it be

some small acts of kindness, offering an encouraging

word to someone, etc. You may be wondering what

does all of this has to do with the Solemnity of Corpus

Chris – the Body and Blood of Christ. Well it does. As

we recall from the passages of the New Testament

authors, Ma hew, Mark, Luke, and John our Lord Jesus

went around various regions of Galilee curing illnesses,

healing people from various afflic ons, and also restoring

people to life. A er His crucifixion, Resurrec on, and

Ascension He did not abandon His disciples or us: He le

us an everlas ng memory of His presence. In a very

special way our Lord Jesus touches our lives to this very

day. A er all we do hunger for many things in our lives:

we want to get ahead in life, as it were. We want to find

enjoyment and fulfillment in whatever we do. Some do

this by accumula ng “things” as is evidenced by that TV

program, Hoarders: Buried Alive, or by filling ourselves

with all kinds of quick foods and snacks. When we think

about it the real nourishment that enables us to grow is

to allow the Lord Jesus to come to us in the Holy

Eucharist. From the earliest days Chris ans have seen

the Eucharist not only as a symbol of how Jesus sa sfies

our spiritual hunger, but as real food. Food for the

journey of life. We honor and respect this food, the

Eucharist. Some of you might even remember that on

this solemnity a song composed by St. Thomas Aquinas---

Pange Lingua [Sing, my tongue, the Savior's glory] was

sung to honor the Lord Jesus, present in the Eucharist.

On the sad side we have been unable to gather together

to share in the Eucharist and sing of the Lord’s love for

us. Gradually we are coming back together. I am looking

forward to seeing you again and sharing the Lord’s gi of

the Eucharist with you. Gradually—and hopefully—we

will be able to do this without too much difficulty.

Naturally we will s ll observe social distancing in church,

but on the plus side all of us will see and be entertained

by a variety of colorful masks. We s ll must observe

some condi ons to celebrate together i.e., wear a face

mask, maintain social distance from others, and if we feel

ill to stay home. I know that we all will observe these

requirements for as long as it is necessary because we

are concerned about each other’s wellbeing. One more

note that I would like to add is that I offer a genuine

Spiritual Communion

In this me of uncertainty, when we are unable to leave our homes to a end Mass, we are encouraged to make and act of “spiritual communion,” where we unite ourselves to God through prayer. It is a beau ful way to express to God our desire to be united with him when we are unable to complete that union in the recep on of Holy Communion.

Countless saints incorporated this type of prayer into their daily lives, not being sa sfied with receiving Jesus in the Eucharist once a week or even once a day. Making an act of spiritual communion for them was an essen al part of life and drew them closer to God on a daily basis.

St. Josemaria Escriva encouraged everyone to make a spiritual communion as o en as they could, “What a source of grace there is in spiritual communion! Prac ce it frequently and you’ll have greater presence of God and closer union with him in all your ac ons.”

Padre Pio also had a habit of making a spiritual communion throughout the day outside of the celebra on of Mass. He desired to be always united with Jesus Christ in everything he did.

Below is a tradi onal prayer of spiritual communion that many saints have prayer over the years. It can be prayed if you find yourself at Mass unable to receive the Eucharist, or even in the midst of your daily work, li ing up your thoughts to God.

The ul mate goal of our lives should be communion with God and an act of spiritual communion can help a person draw closer to that goal.

My Jesus,

I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love you above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen

Bishop Pate has stated that that First Communion celebrations will be postponed until September

I pray that you and your loved ones are healthy. As you may have seen, Bishop Richard Pates, recently shared our mul -phased plan for reopening churches in the Diocese of Joliet.

• Phase I allows for parishes to reopen for Bap sm, Reconcilia on, Weddings and Funerals with a limit of TEN a endees.

• Phase IA allows for parishes to reopen for private prayer and adora on with a limit of TEN a endees.

• Phase II allows for reopening for weekday and weekend Masses for larger groups depending on the guidelines which will be issued by the State of Illinois at a later date, and the capacity of the church building

Our Parish Reopening Plan First and foremost, it is important for everyone to

understand that our efforts are to priori ze the safety and wellbeing of all while maintaining due respect and reverence for the sacraments and liturgical norms of our faith.

I have assembled a Parish Reopening Leadership Team and we have already met. We have begun the required training from the Diocese to ensure that our parish reopening plan conforms to the guidelines developed by the Diocese in collabora on with civil and healthcare authori es. We have ordered the necessary cleaning supplies through the Diocese.

Volunteers Needed We will need volunteers to assist with various aspects of

our parish reopening plan. Importantly, these volunteers must not be part of a “vulnerable popula on” (with no underlying medical condi on such as diabetes; lung disease; undergoing cancer treatment, etc.) Those over the age of 60 should consult with the Parish Leadership Team about possibly serving as a volunteer. I ask all of you who are younger than 60 and healthy with no underlying health condi ons to consider assis ng us. I especially encourage high school, college students as well as young adults serve and volunteer for teams. Look for informa on regarding team responsibili es on the parish web page.

A Prayer for Healing Loving God, turn your ear to the cries of your sons and daughters who seek healing. Ease our troubled hearts. Mend our broken spirits. Be ever present in our distress.

Merciful Lord, send your Healing Spirit to our brothers and sisters who have endured pain and abuse physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Comfort their weary spirits. Soothe their pain.

May our eyes be opened to see your image in these wounded members of Your people. Give us all courage to act and speak up on behalf of the most vulnerable. Pour forth Your healing Spirit to renew our trust and hope in You, who are our refuge and our strength.

We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Watch the Ordination Mass on June 20 Via Livestream

Bishop Richard Pates, the diocesan apostolic administrator, will be presiding at Mass to ordain six new priests and a seminarian who will become a transitional deacon.
