Community Flood Store Catalogue

What is a Community Flood Store?

A community flood store can include equipment and tools that your community can access before, during and after heavy rainfall events, which can cause flooding. The contents could also help to mitigate and reduce the impacts of flooding, making communities more resilient. Northamptonshire County Council has compiled the below list of equipment as a guide for your community, with estimated costs included. It is the responsibility of your community to determine where to purchase this equipment from. The essential equipment has been highlighted in the last column but we recommend tailoring the equipment required to the needs of your community. It is important to locate the flood store in an easily accessible location close to the centre of the community and in an area at low risk of flooding. This should be a community building such as your Parish or Town Hall, Church Rooms or a school where appropriate.

If there is no suitable storage unit in your community, you may need to purchase a container to house the equipment. Bear in mind that given its size it may need planning permission, so check with your Local Planning Authority before situating the container.

Ensure at least two people can access the store who are responsible and reliable, such as your Flood Warden (if you have one) or another trusted member of the community. It is a good idea to ensure that the selected individual’s home is not at a high risk of flooding, as they may need to concentrate on protecting their own home in times of flood.
