01 2013 USAG Yongsan Super Bowl XLVII Party

Did you know that the first

Super Bowl game in American

history was played on January 15,

1967? The Green Bay Packers

beat Kansas City Chiefs by 25

points in Los Angeles,

California. This year the

Super Bowl will be held

in New Orleans!

Today, New Orleans’ calendar is booked all year long with

famous festivals that celebrate music, cuisine, visual and

performing arts, literature, and more. The city’s

uncommon abundance of festivals stems directly from its

unique character.

The broad themes which unify successful and popular festivals

everywhere-music, cuisine, and the arts-have deep roots in the

local culture. New Orleans’ homegrown jazz and soul music, its

famous culinary traditions, and its longstanding appreciation

of the arts (dating back to the city’s Creole heritage) easily lend

themselves to public celebration.

During New Orleans’ festivals, the different cultural elements

always complement each other. For example, music festivals

feature artists’ booths and food stands with delicious local

dishes. No matter what the festival’s main focus, elements of

music, food, and the arts are always present.

New Orleans’ festivals would not be successful without the

city’s people who know how to relax and have a good time. For

many, the ability to “let the good times roll” seems to come

more naturally in New Orleans. While this trait might seem

frivolous on the surface, fun is an elemental human need, and

it’s what draws countless visitors to New Orleans every year.

Festival attendees in New Orleans

are not passive spectators at all. They

dance, sing along, dress in costume,

engage with both artists and other

festival-goers, and become a focus of

the celebration themselves. In addition,

the setting of New Orleans enhances

the festivals that take place here. The

lovely and diverse architecture, the

beauty of the sub-tropical plant life, and

the balmy weather serve to foster the

special, easy-going atmosphere that

allows festival-goers to enjoy

themselves. Furthermore, the city

features many unique venues that give

each festival its own unique character.

Whether an event takes place in the

French Quarter, Uptown, in Mid-City, or

in any other neighborhood, the

ambiance of any local festival is always

completely New Orleans.

Festivals are not only fun, but a

significant part of the city’s economic

development.

The 47th Annual Super Bowl between

the top two teams in the National

Football League is coming back to the

Mercedes-Benz Superdome for the first

time since 2002. This year’s Super Bowl

is to take place on Sunday, 3 February.

Kick off will be at 1830 ET. To ensure

that all get to see the live game, R &

R Bar and Grill and K-16 Landing Zone

Club have planned a Super Bowl Party

on Monday, 4 February at 0600. The

parties will start at 0600 and since the

parties are early, there will be free

breakfast until supplies last. There

will also be contests that patrons can

participate in such as the Trivia Game

Contest and Best Touchdown Dance

Contest. Patrons will have a chance to

win various door prizes to include the

grand prize which is a round trip airline

ticket to anywhere in the U.S.A! For

more information, please call DSN 723-

5721, DSN 741-6030 or go to the USAG

Yongsan, FMWR Facebook page. We

hope to see you there!

Behind the scenes of the large-scale

events that attract hundreds of

thousands of festival-goers down to the

smaller, neighborhood-focused affairs,

every festival employs tireless

organizers, promoters, investors and

donors, service personnel, volunteers

and many others. New Orleans festivals

are abundant and successful because

the city is full of experienced

professionals who create them, run

them, and nurture their growth. The

city’s largest festivals such as the New

Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and

Mardi Gras are used as examples of

success all over America. The ease with

which New Orleans handles crowd

control is also studied the world over. A

festival event in the city is not produced

just to celebrate and experience joy, it is

serious business.

The biggest, grandest, most-watched

single event in American sports is

coming to New Orleans.

be a ton of different food and snacks that are popular in the Hwacheon City. If you’re not up for snow sledding, playing soccer on ice, ATV or go-kart riding, there will be live entertainment, performances, and an exhibition of ice sculptures that take roughly 20 weeks to prepare. Patrons are expected to bring warm clothes and Korean Won for souvenirs and food.

The overnight trip to Chuncheon and the Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival will take place on 20 & 21 January and seats are limited

07 Mt. Taebaek Snow Festival

The year 2013 marks Mount Taebaek’s 20th Annual Snow

Festival! With winter still among us, you can use this time

to enjoy Korea’s natural beauty and relieve unnecessary stress. From

snow sledding to viewing the magnificent snow sculpture exhibition,

there’s something to do for everyone of all ages.

The city of Taebaek is located in the far south east of Gangwon-do, nestled

in the Taebaek Mountain range. Taebaek is a fairly large town but there

are a lot of shops, restaurants, bars, markets and outdoor activities. The town was

actually once a successful coal mining town but the mines are no longer in operation

although those that visit can still see some evidence of the mines. Taebaek is a busy

and popular destination, especially during the January-February timeframe. As

mentioned above, the city of Taebaek is nestled in the Taebaek Mountain Range.

Mount (Mt.) Taebaek is approximately 500 kilometers along Korea’s

east coast. Rising 1,567 meters above sea level, Taebaek-san

(which means “great white mountain”) is famous for the heavy

snowfall during the winter.

Page 9: Community Connection Feb 2013

Mt. Taebaek Snow Festival 08

The actual Mt.Taebaek Snow Festival will take place from

25 January~3 February. The landmarks in Mt.

Taebaek include the Springhead of the Nakdong River Hwangji

Pond, the Fantastic Underworld Yongyeon Cave, the Springhead of

Han River Geom-nyong-so, Taebaek’s History Coal Museum and

the Paleozoic Era Museum of Natural History. Other landmarks that

Mt. Taebaek is known for is their Ski Resort, their Snow Sledding

Slope and the Youth Center Ice Sledding area. In another section of

the festival, patrons can pay an extra fee for snow racing,

snowmobile towed rafting, ATVs and they can enjoy an ice motor

show.

A major attraction is the world of beautiful snow sculptures

created by top sculptors around the world as well as from

Korea. The size of the sculptures can range from something that

can fit in the palm of your hand to something in the size a SUV.

In addition to the snow sculptures, the festival will feature magic

shows, music concerts, and hands-on activities such as making

your own snow bricks, a snowman, mini lanterns, napkin art,

creating your own perfume and even snow candles! For lunch,

patrons can walk over to the local food court and try Taebaek’s local

winter delicacies, grab a hot beverage from the Igloo café and after-

wards, visit the Retinispora Foot Bath area for a relaxing

afternoon. When the sun sets, patrons can enjoy the Starlight

Festival beautiful ornaments and designs to light up the streets and

the festival will end with a LED dance performance by

professionals.

The Moyer Outdoor Recreation Center (ORC) has planned

a trip to the Taebaek Snow Festival on Sunday, 3

February. The transportation fee is $25.00 for adults and $15.00 for

children (17 years old and under) and the admission fee is 1,000

KRW. Other activities may have additional costs. The deadline to

register is three (3) days before the tour date. The bus will depart

Moyer ORC at 0630 and the K-16 front gate at 0715. For more

11 Lunar New Year

Although many of us plan on being

here for only a short time, take a

minute and learn about the

interesting culture of your host country. Seol-

nal (설날) for example is the Lunar New Year

holiday observed by Koreans to pay respect

to ancestors, catch up with other family

members and to celebrate the New Year.

Each customary ritual practiced in Korea

is said to signify a positive impact on the

participant’s future in the year to come.

The New Year is marked on the lunar

calendar as the 10th of February. Koreans

observe the day before, the day of and the

day after the Lunar New Year. If there were

an American holiday to compare with

Seol-nal, it would be a mixture of New Years

and Thanksgiving.

During Seol-nal, you may see people

dressed in hanboks (traditional

Korean clothes). Hanboks can be

worn by anyone with any body shape

because of the design of the clothing. It is not

known to how far the hanbok dates back or

when the first hanbok was first worn but we

do know that the style of clothing was found

in the Ancient Goguryeo Era. Changes have

been made to the original style but the

general idea or creation of the traditional

clothing still remains in the culture of the

Korean people.

Like any tradition with any culture, food

during Seol-nal plays a role in the

customary ritual. Families usually

spend the entire day before Seol-nal

preparing food to be used as offerings to

ancestors as well as to be served to the

family members. On the actual day of Seol-

nal, it is traditional to eat the dish 떡만두국

(Duk-Mandu-Guk) or 떡국 (Duk-Guk).

Duk-Mandu-Guk which is composed of water,

rice cake slices, vegetables, meat, eggs,

soy sauce, salt, pepper, seaweed (optional)

and dumplings and Duk-Guk is composed of

everything except the dumplings.

Lunar New Year Seol-nal

Page 13: Community Connection Feb 2013

Lunar New Year 12

You may also come across the same dish cooked

in beef broth which adds a bit more flavor to the

dish but typically, Koreans will cook the dish with

water. Eating the dish signifies adding a year to

your real age. For example, if a child that was

three ate this dish on Lunar New Year’s, he or she

would tell others that his or her age is four.

Although many children may like the idea, adults

try to refrain from adding more numbers to their

actual age, regardless in Korea, everyone still

enjoys a bowl of Duk-Mandu-Guk or Duk-Guk.

Another aspect that plays a huge role in

Seol-nal is paying respects to ancestors

and to the current relatives of the family.

The morning of Seol-nal usually begins with an

ancestral ceremony. The ceremony will consist of

having the family gather in front of the ritual table

and set it with traditional Seol-nal food such as

fruit, fish, gal-bi, and a ton of other side dishes.

Once the food is set, the ceremony begins with

deep bows as greetings to the ancestor spirits

with proceeds of prayers. After the ceremony, the

family will gather and enjoy the meal that they

prepared, with Duk-Mandu-Guk or Duk-Guk as

the main dish. After everyone has enjoyed the

feast, the younger generation of the family will pay

respect to their elders by taking a deep bow and

in return, the elders will offer blessings and wishes

for a prosperous year and best of all, Se-baet-

don (money). For the remainder of the day, family

members play traditional games, eat more, and

reminisce on family history.

EAT BREAKFAST EVERYDAY Oatmeal, a piece of fruit, boiled eggs, all of this can be prepared quick and easy in the morning or even the night before. Studies show people who eat breakfast everyday are SIGNIFICANTLY LEANER.

Meal Plan Provided by Chris Canales, Strength and Conditioning Specialist

EAT EVERY 2-3 HOURS I know this can be tough with a busy schedule but you can always pack a bag of mixed nuts, seeds, chopped up veggies (chopped the night before so they are ready to go), fruit, small Tupperware of leftovers from previous night, or a protein shake if you are really in a bind.

INCLUDE PROTEIN WITH EVERY FEEDING This is tough to do but you have to find a way to get your overall protein percentage/quality up. Find things that you like to eat: 93% ground beef, top round, top sirloin, chicken breast, ground turkey, ham, pork, salmon, tuna, trout, cod, eggs, cottage cheese, plain yogurt, skim milk, and string cheese.

NO HIGH CALORIE BEVERAGES water, green tea, black coffee ONLY!

EAT SOME FRUITS/VEGETABLES That piece of lettuce on that Charlie’s chicken sand-wich does not count! Try to eat vegetables as much as possible. Buy them every week, cut them up and have them in Tupperware ready to go. Vegetable options: green pepper, red pepper, onion,

mushrooms, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumber, zucchini, beets, radish, celery, pumpkin, olives, carrots, green beans, asparagus ETC! Fruit options: pear, peaches, banana, strawberries, raspberries, watermelon, honey dew, cantaloupe, plums, grapes, raisins, kiwi, whole grain breads, sweet potatoes, yams, brown rice. You get the point; this is where you should be getting the majority of your carbohydrates from. Some carbs you want to stay away from: white bread, bagels, high sugar foods, baked goods, pizza, fruit juice, soda, cereal bars, canned fruit, anything made with high-fructose corn syrup. majority of your which a carbohydrates come from. Some carbs you want to stay away from: white bread, bagels, high sugar foods, baked goods, pizza, fruit juice, soda, cereal bars, canned fruit, anything made with high-fructose corn syrup.

DON’T BE SCARED OF FATS I’m not going to dive into good/ bad fats I will just give you some general guidelines on what fats to eat. Animal fats,

CHEAT MEALS You should allow yourself to “cheat” 10% of the time. This will help keep you sane and keep you dedicated to your new eating lifestyle. So to put this into context: 7 days in a week, 5 feedings each day = 35 feeding opportunities. Out of those 35 feeding opportunities you should allow yourself to cheat on 3-4 occasions.

Peterson’s offers test prep for graduate school entrance exams - GRE, GMAT, and LSAT - to help you meet your educational goals beyond a four-year degree.

Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans.

Presidents, Day (18 February 2013)Presidents’ Day, celebrated each year on the third Monday in February, is a day when Americans honor the legacies of the U.S. Presidents. The holiday was established in 1800, when Congress declared February 22–George Washington’s birthday–a federal holiday. Still legally known as Washington’s Birthday, Presidents’ Day has become a day to honor not only Washington, but Abraham Lincoln, the 16th U.S. President who was born on February 12, and the lives and accomplishments of all U.S. Presidents.

1. Save for Emergencies Having an emergency savings fund may be the most important difference between those who manage to stay afloat and those who are sinking financially. In a recent survey, only 49% of families said they had extra funds (not including lines of credit) available to pay for an unexpected expense of $1,000. Don’t find yourself unprepared in 2013. How to do it: Save a Portion of Your Tax Refund.

As the Military Saves Week quickly approaches, make sure to give your finances a checkup and discover if you need to make sav-ing a priority. You may discover that you have debt you need to pay down or that you are ready to take the next step in savings. Helping yourself and your family save successfully for the future should be near the top of your list – and its one issue you can’t afford to subdue! Remember, you don’t have to make a lot of money to save successfully. Start Small. Think Big.

2. Get Out of Debt The best investment most borrowers can make is to pay off consumer debt with double-digit interest rates. How to do it: Find places to cut your spending so that you can pay down your debts faster.

3. Save for Retirement – Participate in the Thrift Savings Plan The Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) is a retirement savings and investment plan for Federal employees and members of the uniformed services, including the Ready Reserve. It offers the same types of savings and tax benefits that many private corporations offer their

4. Make Savings Automatic- set-up a discretion-ary allotment using myPay These savings will provide funds for emergencies, future con-sumer purchases, home purchase, school tuition, or even retire-ment (also see Tip #3). How to do it: You can use an allotment to automatically transfer funds from your pay into a savings account. Saving automatically is the easiest and most successful way to save.

5. Deploying? Take advantage of the Savings Deposit Program A total of $10,000 may be deposited during each deployment and will earn 10% interest annually. How to do it: Visit the finance office at your deployed location (or home base for information) to begin saving. Savings Strategy: Save a Portion of Your Tax Refund Tax Time is a great time to kick start or grow your savings for the future! Use the 30 – 40 – 30 plan. Designate 30% of your refund to pay off debt and catch up on outstanding bills. Earmark 40% for current use. Use 30% to jump start an emergency fund or long term savings. You can use Form 8888 to buy a U.S. Savings Bonds. Bonds are a safe and easy way to save for the future. Are you ready to set your goal? Military Saves, operated by the non-profit Consumer Federa-tion of America, and a partner in the Defense Department’s Financial Readiness Campaign, encourages service members and their families to save money, pay down debt, and build personal wealth. Military Saves promotes.

employees under 401(k) plans. Plus the TSP now has a ROTH option. How to do it: Start with as little as 1% of your pay. Don’t forget to have your spouse or family member save for their retire-ment as well.
