No Dogs on School Grounds Please be reminded that dogs, even on a leash, are not allowed in school grounds; this includes the car park. Adult Toilets If you need to use the bathroom when you are on school grounds, please use the toilet down near the library NOT the student toilets. Thank you. Late to school It is very important that students are at school by 8:50am, ready for the 8:55am bell. If your child is unavoidably late, they must report to the school office on arrival. The child must be accompanied by an adult; otherwise the lateness is recorded as unexplained. Students who arrive after 8:55am are significantly disadvantaged. They miss important messages and most importantly, the introduction to lessons when explicit teaching happens. They feel uncomfortable and embarrassed when they have missed out on the teacher’s introduction to the day. Car Park Safety Every afternoon our Assistant Principals are on duty in the car park, ensuring that the pick-up flows smoothly. It helps the process greatly if parents display their name signs clearly so that children can be ready for you as you drive around the loop. As always, I urge parents to make safety an absolute priority in the car park. Follow the directional arrows, be patient and do not park in areas clearly marked as ‘No Parking’. If everyone follows the guidelines, it will make life easier, and certainly safer, for all. Alternatively, you can park near Brookvale Oval / St Augustine’s and take the short walk to the school to pick up your child. Lately we have noticed a number of students and parents entering and leaving the school via the top car park gates. We ask that students and parents only enter and leave the school via the pedestrian gates. Please help us ensure that students arrive at school and return home safely every day by reinforcing this message with your children. Students are quick to copy the behaviour of adults, so please model pedestrian safety at all times. Term Invoices Term invoices went home last week. Thank you to those families who have made prompt payments already. Please ensure you speak to our School Administration Manager (SAM), Sandra Lombardo if you are having financial hardship and would like to set up a payment plan. Parental Involvement at School Helping out at the canteen, or getting involved with class reading groups has far more value than you might realise.

Kids become better learners when their parents get involved in their education.

Parental involvement encourages kids to pursue higher education.

Parental involvement makes kids happier.

As a parent, you are the most influential factor in how your child views school and the community they're part of. Your involvement with their learning goes a long way towards your child becoming a capable, resilient and happy adult. Never be afraid to ask teachers how you can get involved. In the eyes of our school, you are a valuable resource. Here's why: when parents are involved in their child's school life, it leads to a happy and well-adjusted child.

*****Research shows that kids do better at school when parents get involved.*****

Ways to get involved at school:

help at the canteen

help in the library

help out with reading groups

make costumes for school plays

help at P&C fundraisers

help in the grounds

Thank you to all our current volunteers – we really appreciate your help. Please make sure you have completed

the Appendix 5 form for 2020 and provided one form of photo ID to the office. If you have provided one form of

photo ID in the past, please sign the Appendix 5 form and the Confidentialty Agreement for 2020. Copies of

these are on the notices stand outside the office.

Class parents will be in touch shortly, if they haven’t already, to introduce themselves and disperse any class

specific information your teacher or the P&C would like you to be aware of.

What a wonderful start to Kindergarten we have had! We have settled smoothly into our classes and are making new friends and learning classroom and school routines. We have now begun our literacy and numeracy programs. This term in Literacy we are looking at nursery rhymes; concentrating on rhyming words, learning our sounds and basic letter formation. In Maths, we are working on our basic number knowledge and practising these skills in our hands-on activities with our Maths partners. We have also met our amazing Year 5/6 buddies and they have been so helpful teaching us about our school and playing with us at recess and lunch. It has been a fabulous start and we are having so much fun! We cannot wait to see what our first year of school has install for us.

Here are a few happy snaps of us working and settled in our classes:

Mrs Dixon, Mr Hurley & Mrs McNamara

What a wonderful time we are having in Year 1 and we are settling in well to our new rooms! We are thoroughly enjoying our Maths unit and investigating numbers in both ascending and descending order. We have been using hands on materials like toothpicks and paddle-pop sticks to make patterns which is helping us with counting forwards and backwards. Next, we get to count sausages which sounds delicious! In literacy, we have loved learning how to recognise and use verbs and alliteration in our writing to further engage with the reader. We are continuing to build our hand eye coordination and developing ball skills in sport.

Year 2 have quickly settled in to their new classes and surroundings. In numeracy we have been working with our Maths partners to make connections across mathematical sub strands. Our overall intention is to develop our conceptual understanding and explain our mathematical thinking. In Geography we are studying the Wonder of Water which we have linked to our Rich Literacy Unit. In May we will be visiting the Narrabeen Coastal Environment Centre to support this unit of work. This year some of us who are turning 8 will be participating in our first swimming carnival! Mr Gray has reminded us that we need to be able to confidently swim 50 metres. Last week we attended a session with Smart Start Financial Literacy where we learnt about creating good saving habits. Our motto is “Speed to your needs and wait for your wants!”

Mrs Richardson & Ms Lohr

Stage 2 have had a wonderful start to 2020, getting to know one another and forming new friendships across Year 3 and Year 4. Students across all of the classes have been enjoying the works of Roald Dahl and Rod Clement to improve the language choices in our writing. We are enjoying the creative and imaginative writing styles and have been using terrific authors to inspire our own stories. In Mathematics we have continued to develop our concepts of whole number, time and addition. We have enjoyed getting outdoors to represent our thinking and look for connections between our learning and the real world. Our local scientists have continued to impress us with their knowledge of living things and have already begun to cultivate their own plants in the classroom. Thank you to Mrs Tully and Mrs Assi-Dyer for helping us get hands on with our learning. We are so excited to see how our plants will continue to change over the next two weeks. Our new Friday PDHPE sessions started last week and we have been learning about how to stay health, we have begun some new drills to learn soccer skills and played a range of games to put those skills into action. Thank you to Miss Gregersen and Miss Britton for organising school sport. Congratulations to all the Junior Eagle Tag boys and girls who played their first game this week. A very special thank you to everyone who participated in PSSA trials and tried their personal best! Well done! Our Stage 2 students have had an important financial literacy session, with a visit from a financial facilitator who taught us some important lessons on how to save our money and how to be savvy when stores try to advertise ‘special’ deals. On Wednesday, Stage 2 will be heading into the city and going back in time to understand how the first contacts occurred in Sydney Harbour. We look forward to sharing our experience with you in the next newsletter. Mrs Murphy-Haste has been working with us in the library to understand the importance of the first contacts in Australia’s history and will be helping us research explorers using a critical eye.

Year 5 and 6 have settled into their new classes and are enjoying all the wonderful responsibilities of being leaders within the school. We have been host to 11 students from Korea who have been very welcomed into the classroom and playground. So far, we have engaged in many fantastic learning experiences and created our classroom communities focussing on following PBEL expectations and discussing positive classroom environments. Stage 3 are very excited to have started working with our Kindergarten buddies. Each class is paired with a Kindy class who we will work closely with throughout the year. We are looking forward to the upcoming Swimming Carnival where our Sports Captains will assist in running their first school carnival. Everyone is immersed in their learning and we are looking forward to an amazing year together.

Library Lovers’ Day Thank you to all the children, teachers and parents who made our special day such a great success on Friday 14 February. We raised over $410 for Heartkids with our gold coin contributions.

With the new team of 2020 library monitors on hand these little cuties came in to place red love hearts in books. Don’t forget to send in your family reading photo for our special display in the library.
