Commodores Welcome

2

A very warm welcome to the Engineering Sailing Cup 2014.

The Log book cover shows the Commodores actual Yacht for ESC 2014 an Hansa 445,called GDE this is one of the 10 identical yachts which make up the fleet this year. The governing wish I received from all skippers was to arrange 10 identical yachts to give a matched fleet. This was no easy task when coupled with the requirement to sail at a location we have not been before. Things may change in the future but at this time and after in depth research Kastela in Croatia was the only location we could find with fleets of identical yachts. Most of you will recall we have all sailed in Croatia before and also had a start from Kastela in 2010 with the ESC fleet. The next page shows a print from Google earth with previous routes we have sailed and also the proposed route for 2014. In an effort to come someway in the wish for a new location we have paid a lot of attention to find stopovers that betray the local charm of Croatia and are at places we have not been to previously.

If we are lucky with good winds then the third requirement , which was to arrive not to late in the afternoon, should be met on some or most days

We are sure you will be delighted with the stopovers most of which we have chosen are close to unspoilt townships.

The Route shown in Green is the Proposed route ESC 2014 , the other colours are routes we have previously sailed either in ECC or ESC. As can be

seen we have minimal overlap.

The route has been set out with flexibility to swap destinations to cater for adverse weather, and day 6 has a reasonably sheltered run to home

base to ensure we return on time as you will all have seen the heavy penalties for late return, It is our intention to stick with the preferred route

if at all possible to avoid problems with stop over pre-booking for each day. 3

ESC 2013 – Preferred Route

Initially we had 9 identical with 4 cabins and the 10th yacht while identical on the outside had 3 cabins, this was rejected and is now fully matched all with 4 cabins so the empty yacht weight is also identical. This all means your sailing talent and in these water your tactical skills will be tested to the full.

Each day we have tried to set out a challenging course, however, as you all know the wind and the changes in wind in a particular day demand a coordinated crew effort to finish with the best positions.

All Skippers will be responsible for their own mooring fees . The normal practice is that the ships papers are collected by the harbour staff, sometimes minutes after berthing , before departure the next day arrange to pay the charge and collect the ships papers. The charge varies but we paid approx Euro 45,-- per night. The first and last night marina fees for Kastela Marina are included in the charter price.

As regards restaurants we found and experienced many that were typical Croatian and as usual please check carefully your bill before payment, on occasions they were not good at memory nor arithmetic.

Our medallions and trophies are once again provided by Poerner Gruppe and we thank Eugen on behalf of the fleet for this continued support.

Code Flags: As we have settled into our regular boat numbers , we will continue with international code flags flown from the backstay which we can re-use each year. It maybe so that the yachts have hull stickers numbering which may differ from our ESC number please use your usual number and disregard the boat sticker.

Your code flag is shown next to your crew photos.

For Starts the rabbit should be easily spotted again this year, we have no experience as “Rabbit starter” so please forgive any mishaps we may have. The start areas have many land marks which we may use as “line up” with the commodores boat as start line so listen to your radio.

Local notes:

We have understood all the yachts will have a GSM 3G Chip installed in a router unit on board, at check in make sure you are given the log in and password which allows multi users to use the internet on board. (Dirk your boat coming from a different owner will have a similar unit but is a loose item not installed permenantly as the rest). In the Recce week in October last year we paid €5,- per dag.

We intend to have a printer on board for issue of a hard copy each day of the results but they will also be e-mailed to each skipper after each skippers meeting.

The dinghy race this year will run with theme the Wizard or Witches, We would like to make this a “Fun” event with as minimum the Dingy crew dressed up as a Wizard or Witch. We have several options where this event can be held. Details of this further in the logbook, and announcement at the skippers meeting.

Unless otherwise notified skippers meeting will be at 09.00 at a convenient cafe or if not available on the Commodores boat.

We hope you and your crews arrive rested and ready to sail fast and above all safe.

Split Airport situated only 7km away

About 20 mins. drive to Split . It is a fairly remote location and not within walking distance of any large village or town. But just 15 mins walk are two large Supermarkets , one if which is a Lidl which we recommend. Taking a shopping trolley full of provisions (beer and wine) is quite an undertaking as the road surface is not good. Use a car or taxi.

WINDS There are three characteristic weather patterns in the Bay of Kaštela area, and can also be applied to the close by eastern Adriatic coast:

• Moist, cloudy and unstable weather accompanied by southern relatively warm and moist wind called Jugo (pronounced YOU-vertiGO)

• Dry, sunny and mostly stable weather accompanied by northern cold and dry wind called Bura (pronounced BUsh-RAvine)

• Stable summer weather accompanied by north-western wind called Maestral (pronounced MArge-rEd-STRong-ALghorithm) and nightly northern wind, blowing from the continent on the north called Burin (pronounced BUsh-RINg).

NEVERA • Besides winds, The Adriatic coast is known for local, short-termed

weather storms called Nevera. They can happen during the whole year but most often they appear in summer. Their characteristics are strong rain, lightening, thunder and temperature falling.

ESC 2014 – Light Entertainment

King's day (formerly Queen's Day) in The Netherlands is to celebrate...well...the King! Actually, it's to celebrate his birthday. On April 27, to honour our King, everyone dresses up in The Netherlands in orange and parties in the street! We at the ESC intend to do the same on the quay side, however, on Day 3 in ZLARIN. We invite you all to join us and taste some Dutch Cheese and raise a glass of Oranje bitter Also in ZLARIN, after the Dutch Happening and before your evening diner, we intend to have a Football penalty competion. This will be on the pitch just 100 meters from the harbour in the town and will be 6 penalty's per boat. We felt the Pitch too hard for a real game and following the drink far too dangerous. If any other boat wishes to provide some light entertainment on other evenings let the Commodore know. Remember we have the Dingy race which we hope to hold on Day 2 at Primosten.

12

ESC 2014 – Light Entertainment 2

• Week long “spot the object” competion

At the Skippers meeting on day 1 we will hand out a few sheets of printed photgraphs to each skipper. As always your task is to spot the object and write down its location. Hand the completed sheets together with your results on day 6. We always found this competition real tough and this year we have made it easy. All 100% correct entries get a prize.

• Art competition

We are looking for the art talent in the ESC, We will hand out, for each boat, at the skippers meeting Day 1, 3 size A3 sheets of paper and a set of coloured pencils and for the real artists a piece of charcol. The idea is that during your week some events, crew or super sailing images should be captured in an artistic impression. This could be a cartoon or a vivid picture of a yacht at full speed, or some other picture worthy happening We ask you to hand in your best effort (One A3 must be ESC related ) with your boat name clearly noted bottom right corner. Our art judge is ready and will have the final choice in the winning art work. Again a prize for the winner. We are really curious how this will turn out and naturally all art works will be hang on the wall at the final prize giving

General Sailing Instructions Competitors are expected to pass Gates at approximately 0.5Nm….but not too close! All recorded times must be GPS times. Communication: Ch 72 Emergency Ch 16 Starting Instructions (Rabbit Start) see next page for details Declaration Slips are at the back of the Log Book, please complete and bring to Commodores Boat as soon after racing as possible. Please record times when passing Gates and Finishing Times. If we have to stop racing with GPS coordinates please take bearings to your nearest two boats. Taking a photo of your chart plotter screen showing time, coordinates and boat position is useful if we are struggling to determine finish positions.

Offers to the Commodore

The History

A Gin Pennant means that the boat flying this flag is inviting crews from other ESC boats for drinks.

The origins of the Gin Pennant are uncertain, but it seems to have been used since the 1940s and probably earlier. Originally it was a small green triangular pennant measuring approximately 18 by 9 inches (460 by 230 mm), defaced with a white wine glass, nowadays the gin pennant is a Starboard pennant defaced with a wine or cocktail glass. Its colour, size and position when hoisted were all significant as the aim was for the pennant to be as inconspicuous as possible, thereby having fewer ships sight it and subsequently accept the invitation for drinks. The Gin Pennant is still in regular use by Commonwealth Navies, such as the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Within the RAN it is common practice, whilst in port, for junior officers of one ship to attempt to raise the Gin Pennant on the halyard of another ship, thereby forcing that ship to put on free drinks for the officers of the ship that managed to raise the pennant. If, however the junior officers are caught raising the pennant, then it is their ship that must put on free drinks.

The courses have been created with flexibility to swap destinations to cater for adverse weather. It is our intention to stick

Primosten has long pebble beaches and a beautiful promenade surrounded by old town walls. One of the most famous and most beautiful beaches is the Raduca beach. During the summer months numerous festivities are organized in Primosten, such as: fishing night, folklore and Dalmatian folk music evenings. For those in search of fun until the early morning hours, there is a disco club, Aurora, which is one of the most popular clubs on the Adriatic. For restaurants, visit the restaurants “Staro selo” and “Amfora”, as well as the taverns “Jerko” and “Torkul”.

Primosten. The old part is situated on a small island which was once connected to the mainland by a bridge . Primosten has preserved its Mediterranean atmosphere and all the features of a medieval Mediterranean fishing town, which is especially evident in its narrow streets and compacted houses in the old town core. Visit historical sites such as: the parish church St. Juraj (built in 1485 on the highest point of the former island), St. Roko church (built in 1680, a valuable cultural monument), image of Our Lady of Loret and the Church of Our Lady of Grace (built in 1553).
