United States Navy Band Commodores Jazz Ensemble Bass Trombone Audition October 7, 2019 The Commodores are the Navy's premier jazz ensemble, based in Washington, D.C. Formed in 1969, this 18-member group includes some of the finest jazz musicians in the world and is held in high regard nationwide by audiences and critics alike. The group performs public concerts, national concert tours, educational masterclasses and clinics, and for high-level military and civilian government functions. Starting salary for a new member of the U.S. Navy Band is $62,065-$66,925, plus 30 days paid leave annually and full benefits for members and dependents. Members may also be eligible for an enlistment bonus (up to $10,000) and/or the Student Loan Repayment Program (up to $65,000). Those selected for the U.S. Navy Band are advanced to the paygrade of E-6 (musician first class) following recruit training under a contract for permanent duty with the U.S. Navy Band. Applicants must be aged 18 to 39 and otherwise qualified for service in the U.S. Navy. (continued on page 2)

Application Instructions The bass trombone audition will take place Oct. 7, 2019, at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., and is by invitation only. In order to be considered for a live audition, you must submit the following materials electronically by 11:59 p.m. EDT on Sept. 6, 2019 (1) One-page resume (2) Letter of Endorsement - only for current military members (3) Audio recordings of the following selections:
• Wayne Shanklin, arr. Rob Vuono Jr.: The Big Hurt, measures 4-53. Quarter note = 180.
• Walter Donaldson, arr. Nelson Riddle: Love Me or Leave Me, measures 1-47. Quarter note = 120.
• Toshiko Akiyoshi: March of the Tadpoles, measures 81-150. Quarter note = 240.

• Up to three additional examples of your choice. Each track should be no longer than one minute, 30 seconds.
Optional improvisation You may include an example of improvisation as one of your three additional tracks. This may be a tune of your choice, head and two to three choruses. You may use either a live rhythm section (preferred) or backing tracks (e.g. Aebersold/iRealBook).
Recordings should be no more than 12 minutes total. For official application instructions as well as eligibility information, please contact [email protected]. Once we have received your resume, we will provide submission instructions for your audio recordings; please do not e-mail audio files as attachments. You must email the Navy Band before submitting recordings. All recordings are due by 11:59 p.m. EDT on Sept. 6, 2019.
