Hopefully You Saved the Date forTuesday, February 2nd – 2A Tuesday for Maryland

Your presence is needed on Lawyers Mall on 2A Tuesday to demonstrate that gun owners and shooters are a major presence in Maryland and not some small marginalized group of crackpot yahoos that some of the delegates and senators of a more progressive and less enlightened persuasion believe us to be. The 2A supporting organizations in Maryland – NRA, AGC (Associated Gun Clubs of Baltimore) MSI (Maryland Shall Issue), and MSRPA (Maryland State Rifle and Pistol Association) have held meetings with individual Senators and Delegates as well as with several groups to talk about future legislation they would like to see as well as some legislation they will need to work against. So far, three bills appear to favor things gun owners would like to see: fingerprint retention, a fee reduction for the HQL, and longer records retention for meeting minutes under the Open Meetings Act. But let's not fool ourselves, the session is still early and there are some things on the horizon that may come up. Examples include using the Federal terror watch list as a prohibitor from purchasing and owning firearms in Maryland, regulating black powder and antique weapons, an excise tax statewide on firearms and ammo to pay for body cameras in Baltimore City, as well as repeats of other bills we have seen introduced in the past. Please plan to attend the 2A Tuesday Rally and Legislative Lobbying Day on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 and help your 2A supporting organizations help you by talking to your elected officials about the bills already listed by then, and tell them what they can do to support your opinion on firearms rights and your right to personal protection in the State of Maryland. And when you come out for 2A Tuesday, bring a few neighbors and a few friends. More about the 2A Tuesday rally schedule will be sent to you by email blast as it gets finalized, but the two most important things - the rally and the elected officials meet and greet - are set. The rally will be from 10:00 AM – Noon in Lawyers Mall and the elected officials meet and greet will be from Noon to 1:00 PM. We recommend that you contact your elected officials and make an appointment to see them and then let folks in your district know you have done so. If you have any questions about legislation, 2A Tuesday, or how you can help with 2A Tuesday, please contact AGC at http://www.associatedgunclubs.org/legislative.html, MSI at [email protected], or MSRPA at http://www.msrpa.org/. Let’s show the legislators that gun owners in Maryland are still a force to be reckoned with! See you there on Feb. 2nd!

Club Matches

The next Service Rifle/MSR/Any Rifle subject to the FSA of 2013 (except M1A) match will be held on

February 6th from 10:00am to 12:00 noon. The next Service Rifle/MSR/Any Rifle subject to the FSA of 2013 (except M1A) match will be held on February 6th from 10:00am to 12:00 noonand will be for Semiauto Rifles. New Service and Vintage Military Rifle Match shooters should consider arriving NLT 9:30am in order to familiarize themselves with the course of fire and get guidance in use of the sling. A five minute unlimited sighter shot sighting-in period will precede the record fire phases. For details on high power rifle match requirements, please visit the web page at http://aafg.org/events.html. Match Scores on the Forum Don’t forget, scores from current and most preceding Service, Vintage, and Very Vintage Rifle matches can be found on the AAF&G Forum (see Upcoming AAF&G Events on the Home Page to enter). Other stuff is also posted on the Forum. Give it a look-see sometime. Sign up for members is easy! And for non-members, nigh unto impossible! This is your exclusive AAF&G members only forum and is for all sorts of gun/shooting/2nd Amendment/club operations info, some of which may not be for non-member consumption. Check it out. And here’s a continuing reminder to all Eccles HP range users: If you bring guests to the club, remember to have them fill out and sign a waiver before doing anything else. At the Eccles HP Range, the blank waiver box is located on the wall on the right as you enter. And right next to it is the box for signed waivers (which has been emptied so there’s room now for more signed waivers). Some of our RSOs have asked that we remind and reemphasize to all Eccles Range users that they should not bring uncased firearms into the pavilion or uncase cased firearms until they have first determined that no one is down range or in front of the firing line, all personnel are back and at or behind the firing line, and the firing line is hot. Some folks get understandably concerned when they are down range and see others at the firing line handling firearms even if it’s only to put the firearm in the rack. Thank you for your continued cooperation. On January 16th, immediately following the Vintage Rifle match for Bolt Action Rifles, the Eccles Range Committee held an awards luncheon to recognize and reward high scoring shooters who competed in the Service rifle, Vintage Rifle (Bolt & Semiauto), and Very Vintage Rifle matches during 2015. For the Service rifle, and Vintage rifle awards, the top three scores were the basis for the

As is evident from a perusal of the scores above, Roy H. took first place in all four categories and for that was awarded the Overall High Shooter award medal and certificate. Congratulations to all our marksmanship awardees! In addition to the medals, the awardees were also afforded the opportunity to pick from an assortment of bore lights, laser bore sighters, AR15 armorer’s tools, knives, and other accessories. BlackPowderWe are going to get our

BLACKPOWDERPALOOZA matches off to an early start this year with a Muzzle Loader Target Rifle match on Saturday, March 12 at 1000. Since this is not a Sanctioned Weekend, we will leave several firing positions open on the Eccles HP range during the match for any informal rifle shooters to use. The Board has not selected the Sanctioned Weekends for 2016 yet, so as soon as they do, we will provide a schedule of the planned BLACKPOWDERPALOOZA matches for the year. Also, in order to more efficiently provide information to those on the Black Powder interest list and answer any inquiries, I have created a new gmail address dedicated to black powder shooting here at AAF&G. The address is [email protected]. If you wish to be on this list, please send an e-mail to this address. Finally, I am once again soliciting interest in a Muzzle Loading information seminar. For those of you who have an interest in muzzle loaders but don’t know how to get started and also for those who may own one but don’t quite know all of the particulars of loading, firing and cleaning them, we will conduct a brief informational seminar followed by a session on the range for you to get a first-hand opportunity to fire muzzle loaders. If you are interested, please reply to me. If enough interest is shown, we will schedule it sometime this spring.

January was a cruel month. The early January weather was so nice that one of our shooters decided to take a nap

before the start signal. Later in the month, we had to break a long standing tradition of not cancelling a match due to weather. The great blizzard of ’16 forced us to postpone an IDPA Classifier match. In the past, as long as shooters could get to the AP range, the match was on as seen from a photo of a previous winter match. The weather on January 23rd was the exception to the rule. Getting to AAF&G was at best problematic. Of course, if the ground is slippery, icy, or snowbound, we use a match design that keeps the shooter standing still. Looking forward to Spring Time.

QUOTES TO NOTE!"Firearms stand next in importance

to the constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and

keystone under independence … from the hour the Pilgrims landed to the present day, events, occurences and

tendencies prove that to ensure peace security and happiness, the rifle and

pistol are equally indispensable … the very atmosphere of firearms anywhere

restrains evil interference — they deserve a place of honor with all that's good."

AAF&G Score • February 2016 • 6 www.aafg.org

It’s a new year, and perhaps you have resolved to do a little stand-up one handed shooting. After all, it is fun,

requires modest exercise, and is a fine way to learn to shoot amazingly well. And even if you don’t get into Precision Pistol, it is simply great fun to plink with a truly accurate pistol. So what about the pistols? The first point to remember is that not all pistols are precision (Bullseye) pistols. The sport demands a pistol that can hold a two inch group or preferably better at 50 yards. That requirement immediately tosses out most 22 RF pistols. There are a few swoopy large and even 1911 look-a-like 22’s out there that appear to be precision pistols – but they aren’t. And don’t rely on the advice of the salesperson behind the counter. In our experience, and at the risk of irritating someone, most sales people just don’t know. Precision pistols range in cost from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. Fortunately, the lower end of the range contains guns that are more than up to the challenge. Here are a few: Browning Buckmark, Ruger Mark III, Ruger 22/45, and Marvel Unit 1 (an upper that fits on your 1911 lower). All of these can be found new for $500 or less in basic configuration. In the case of the Buckmark and Rugers, a four to 6 inch bull barrel is the ticket. Don’t bother with any more barrel length – it makes the gun front end heavy and adds nothing to inherent accuracy (other than a longer sight radius). The Marvel is different. It is a complete upper that fits on a 1911 lower that you may already have. It simply replaces the 45 cal upper and can be done in minutes. The switch back is just as fast. The Marvel Unit 1 is not classified as a stand-alone firearm, so under Maryland law it can be purchased without an HQL. So if you already own a good 1911, this might work.

My Say…from Mike McGrath

In the $500 to $1000 range popular precision guns include the venerable Smith & Wesson 41, a couple of wonderful High Standards, and the Walther/Hammerli X-esse. Beyond $1000 there are fascinating choices; many of the names end in vowels (think Ferrari) or are specially tuned or manufactured versions of names already mentioned. In all cases you will need at least two magazines. Although not required, red dot sights can be fitted to all these guns. Dot sights are most appreciated by older shooters who struggle to really focus hard on a front sight. Popular precision red dots include UltraDot and Aimpoint. Avoid any brand without positive elevation and windage click adjustments and a lifetime guarantee. Can you safely buy used gear? The upside is lower cost and possible improvements such as aftermarket triggers, barrels, magazines and sights. The downside is the potential for problems. 22 RF is not a high stress round, so “wearing out” due to shooting is rare. Things to look for include a bright shiny bore, crisp rifling, no abrasions at the muzzle crown, no corrosion, proper feeding, no cracks, no peening of the chamber face, tight lock up, decent trigger action, and overall signs of care. Surface scratches and worn bluing don’t matter – it’s a shooter not a beauty queen. All but one of my precision pistols and revolvers were purchased used. If you think you might take the plunge, come on down to the range and talk about it. We are happy to discuss what we like and don’t like. And maybe, you can talk to someone who has experience with the choice you are making. Talk and read before you buy!

Note – the preceding views are those of the author and not those of AAF&G.

Eccles Range Target FrameDimensions and Construction

The current frame design uses 1"x2"'s, 72” long for the uprights and 1/4” plywood , 6” x 19 ½” for bracing at the bottom and top. It’s very simple. Attach the plywood rectangles to the side rails so the rails are flush with the

edges of the plywood. One goes at the top and the other is affixed so there’s 10” of side rail at the bottom to go into the tubes in the ground.

Each frame requires (2) 1" x 2" x 72”and two of the 6" x19 ½" x ¼” plywood pieces. That’s it! If you plan on using your frame to shoot from the prone position, you might want to add 8” in length to the rails to allow the target to be mounted high enough to be visible over the ground baffles when in the prone position.

Target backers are typically made from 20” x 20” cardboard or foam core backer board.

Remember to affix backers high enough so that when the target is attached you do not get ground strikes.

RIFLEMEN’S LUNCH By Eric Smith

Alot of people think that only women can give luncheons or dinner parties for their friends. This is because they set out their best china and silverware and

serve fancy food. Men can do it, too, but with a twist. Just take the January 16th lunch that the Eccles Range Committee put on with the cooking done by Mike & Kathy Anderson (our Kitchen Committee Chairs) and Keith Jewell, for medal winners and all competitors in last year’s AR-15, Vintage Rifle, and Very Vintage Rifle matches. It was an event for guys (even though gals were more than welcome), and since the rifles used to compete in most of the matches are military rifles, so the “china” was a table full of US Army mess kits complete with military-issue

“silverware” and Army canteen cups. The main courses, dispensed from surplus military field mess containers used for troops in the field, were two versions of classic chipped beef on toast, otherwise known to veterans as “SOS” with one version prepared according to the recipe in the 1942 Army Cook’s Manual, TM 10-405. Side dishes included fried spam, hashed brown potatoes, and the tastiest, fluffiest, creamiest scrambled eggs you ever ate (not from TM 10-405). During the lunch, and as the shooting awards were passed out, the group was entertained with one of the all-time great sniper movies, “Enemy at the Gates,” screened on the club’s big-screen TV. Just when things couldn’t get much better, Andy McKinney showed up with several bottles of fine bourbon whiskeys from his own stash. He laid out plastic cups and not only invited all present to sample his A-list booze, but provided tutorials on each particular bottling. A good time was had by all – but we all had an even better time because this was the kind of luncheon made for guys.
